The results of a research project aimed at designing and development a built-up cold-formed steel beam assembled by laser welding are described in this paper. The research activity was concerned with the evaluation of the applicability of laser welded connections to cold-formed members and with the assessment of the load bearing capacity of the assembled beams. With this aim, both lap-shear and U-tension tests were carried out on laser welds in order to assess the influence on connection strength of different parameters such as the gap between the steel sheets and the zinc coating. Finally, the load bearing capacity of laser welded built-up cold-formed members was investigated by four-point bending tests. Four full-scale prototypes were manufactured with different spacings of connections along the flanges in order to evaluate the effects of weld configuration on the load bearing capacity.  相似文献

A wide experimental investigation on laser welded connections based on both lap-shear and tension tests was performed at the University of Naples. The aim of the study was to assess the possibility of using laser welding in innovative built-up cold-formed steel beams. The experimental programme was designed in order to evaluate the effects of different parameters on the strength and ultimate displacement of the selected connections. In particular, the influence of sheet thickness, gap, loading direction, weld shapes and zinc coating were analyzed. The results of the experimental tests were compared with the predicted resistance values according to Eurocode 3, with the aim of validating for laser welding the mechanical models provided for spot welds.  相似文献

The paper summarises research on cold-formed steel columns performed by the author. Cold-formed steel members are either cold-rolled or brake-pressed into structural shapes. As a result, cold-formed steel open sections are usually singly-point- or non-symmetric. The most common types of singly-symmetric sections are channel and angle. The research focused on cold-formed steel open sections, such as plain and lipped channels, channels with simple and complex edge stiffeners as well as plain and lipped angles, and unequal angles. In addition, cold-formed steel built-up closed sections with intermediate stiffeners were investigated. Both experimental and numerical investigations into the strength and behaviour of cold-formed steel columns were conducted. The column strengths obtained from these investigations were compared with the design strengths obtained using various international standards for cold-formed steel structures. Furthermore, the behaviour and design of cold-formed steel lipped channel columns at elevated temperatures were also investigated. The paper also summarises the design recommendations for cold-formed steel columns.  相似文献

This paper presents an experimental investigation of concrete-filled cold-formed high strength stainless steel tube columns. The high strength stainless steel tubes had a yield stress and tensile strength up to 536 and 961 MPa, respectively. The behaviour of the columns was investigated using different concrete cylinder strengths varied from 40 to 80 MPa. A series of tests was performed to investigate the effects of the shape of the stainless steel tube, plate thickness and concrete strength on the behaviour and strength of concrete-filled high strength stainless steel tube columns. The high strength stainless steel tubes were cold-rolled into square and rectangular hollow sections. The depth-to-plate thickness ratio of the tube sections varied from 25.7 for compact sections to 55.8 for relatively slender sections. The columns had different lengths so the length-to-depth ratio generally remained at a constant value of 3. The concrete-filled high strength stainless steel tube specimens were subjected to uniform axial compression. The column strengths, load-axial strain relationships and failure modes of the columns were presented. The test strengths were compared with the design strengths calculated using the American specifications and Australian/New Zealand standards that consider the effect of local buckling using an effective width concept in the calculation of the stainless steel tube column strengths. Based on the test results, design recommendations were proposed for concrete-filled high strength stainless steel tube columns.  相似文献

The steel beams of corrugated web represent a relatively new structural system which emerged in the past two decades. The thin corrugated web affords a significant weight reduction of these beams, compared with hot-rolled or welded ones. In the solutions existing on the market, the flanges are made of flat plates welded to the sinusoidal web sheet, requiring a specific welding technology. A new solution is proposed in this paper, in which the beam is composed by a web of trapezoidal cold-formed steel sheet and flanges of built-up cold-formed steel members (e.g. back-to-back lipped channel sections or angles with turn lips). The connections between flanges and web can be done by self-drilling screws or by spot welding. The first part of the study, summarised in this paper, is devoted to the evaluation and validation of technical solution, including experimental investigations, carried out at the CEMSIG Research Centre of the Politehnica University of Timisoara (http://www.ct.upt.ro/en/centre/cemsig). In a subsequent paper, numerical investigations aiming to optimise the solution and estimate its technical limits for applications will be presented.  相似文献

The geometry of angle sections is simple, but the behaviour and design calculations of angle sections can be quite complicated. Furthermore, lipped angle sections with unequal flange widths form a non-symmetric section and the behaviour of the section is even more complicated than a singly-symmetric angle section with equal flange widths. A test program on cold-formed steel non-symmetric lipped angle columns is presented. The non-symmetric angle sections were brake-pressed from high strength structural steel sheets having nominal yield stresses of 450 and 550 MPa with plate thicknesses of 1.0, 1.5 and 1.9 mm. The material properties of the column specimens were obtained by tensile coupon tests. The behaviour and strengths of cold-formed steel non-symmetric lipped angle columns were investigated. The test strengths are compared with the design strengths calculated using the North American Specification for the design of cold-formed steel structural members. In addition, the current design rules in the North American Specification for cold-formed steel non-symmetric lipped angle columns are assessed using reliability analysis. It is shown that the design strengths are generally quite conservative.  相似文献

The use of cold-formed thin-walled steel structures has increased in recent years, and some built-up section members are motivated and also widely used for their excellent structural behaviors. In this paper, a series of axially-compressed tests on built-up box section members composed of two C-section by self-drilling screws at flanges are conducted. The differences of global, local and distortional buckling behaviors between members with built-up and single sections are investigated at first. Then the effects of installation error and fastener spacing on ultimate load-carrying capacity of built-up members are analyzed. A strength estimation method for built-up members under axial compression is proposed based on the experimental investigation in this paper, as well as some existing experiments, and corresponding numerical analysis studies. Finally, the predicted capacity obtained by using the proposed strength estimation method is compared with experimental results and the nominal axial strength determined according to the AISI provisions, by which the suitability and accuracy of the proposed strength estimation method have been established.  相似文献

An innovative X section with intermediate stiffeners of thin-walled concrete-filled steel stub was proposed in this study. The X section was firstly brake-pressed from structural steel sheets to form three edges open section with intermediate stiffener in each edge, then a plate with intermediate stiffener was welded to the open section to form the closed section. The intermediate stiffener was designed to enhance the local buckling stress of the thin-walled specimens. Stub column tests of both hollow steel tubes and concrete-filled steel tubes were performed. Material properties of the self-compacting concrete and steel used in the test specimens were also measured. Design methods specified in current design standard and proposed by other researchers are used to predict the design strengths of test specimens. It is shown that the predicted design strengths are conservative.

Experimental and numerical assessment of stayed steel columns   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Stayed steel columns may be used as compression-resisting members of a structure presenting high slenderness ratios and fast erection requirements. The system is able to sustain a wide range of load levels and lengths with economic and reliable structural solutions. Although this structural solution dates back from the 1960s its structural behaviour is not fully understood. This fact motivated a study of the system structural behaviour by means of an experimental program followed by finite element simulations aiming to determine the most efficient structural geometries and the corresponding steel ties pre-stress force magnitudes. A series of full-scale tests were executed in 12 m pre-stressed steel columns with a 90 mm diameter. Some of the main contributions of the current study are related to the conception, development and execution of new tri-dimensional full-scale tests and the development of a finite element model calibrated against these experiments. An extensive parametric analysis based on the calibrated finite element simulation was also performed focusing on the most significant parameters that could affect the structural response, i.e., column length and diameter, pre-stress force magnitude, among others. The test and numerical results will certainly contribute to the development of updated design procedures and formulae to be introduced in future structural design codes.  相似文献

Cold-formed steel members such as beams and columns have the great flexibility of cross-sectional profiles and sizes available to structural steel designers. However, this flexibility makes the selection of the most economical section difficult for a particular situation. In this study, micro genetic algorithm (MGA) is used to find an optimum cross section of cold-formed steel channel and lipped channel columns under axial compression. Flexural, torsional and torsional–flexural buckling of columns and flat-width-to-thickness ratio of web, flange and lip are considered as constraints. The design curves are generated for optimum values of the thickness, the web flat-depth-to-thickness ratio, the flange flat-width-to-thickness ratio for columns. As numerical results, the optimum design curves are presented for various load level and column lengths.  相似文献

This study presents a direct experimental verification of the AISC-LRFD slenderness ratio formulas for built-up compression members. Comparisons of slenderness ratios as specified in various design codes including the AISC-ASD, the AISC-LRFD, the AS-4100 and the CSA S16-01, are also provided. Test results concluded from this study show that the 1999 LRFD formulas generally result in conservative design strengths. However, the 2005 LRFD yields slightly higher strength due to the use of a higher resistance factor of 0.9 instead of 0.85. The design strengths determined based on the slenderness ratio formulas of the Australian Code (AS-4100) are even more conservative. For back-to-back snug-tight bolted sections, the Canadian Code (CSA S16-01) gives virtually the same design outcome as the LRFD. While for back-to-back welded sections, the CSA S16-01 tends to yield a less conservative design.  相似文献

Web crippling of cold-formed unlipped channels with flanges restrained   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Ben Young  Gregory J. Hancock 《Thin》2004,42(6):911-930
The paper describes a series of web crippling tests on cold-formed unlipped channels with flanges restrained (fastened) as well as channels with flanges unrestrained (unfastened). The tests were performed under end and interior two-flange loading conditions specified in the North American Specification and Australian/New Zealand Standard for cold-formed steel structures, namely end-two-flange and interior-two-flange loading conditions. The concentrated load was applied by a bearing plate at the top flange of the channels, and the reaction force applied by an identical bearing plate at the bottom flange of the channels. The bearing plates acted across the full flange widths of the channels. The flanges of the channels were either bolted to one or two bearing plates for the specimens with flanges restrained. The web crippling test strengths are compared with the design strengths obtained using the North American Specification, Australian/New Zealand Standard and American Iron and Steel Institute Specification for cold-formed steel structures. It is shown that the design strengths predicted by the North American Specification using the unfastened design rules are generally conservative, but unconservatively predicted using the fastened design rules, even when the flanges of the specimens were restrained. The design strengths predicted by the Australian/New Zealand Standard and American Iron and Steel Institute Specification are unconservative.  相似文献

This paper describes a test program on cold-formed lean duplex stainless steel members in combined compression and minor axis bending. The test specimens were cold-rolled from flat strips of lean duplex stainless steel grade EN 1.4162. In this study, square and rectangular hollow sections were compressed at different eccentricities, in order to obtain a beam-column interaction curve for each series of tests. Initial overall geometric imperfections of the members were measured prior to testing. The ultimate loads and the failure modes of each specimen were obtained. The observed failure modes include local buckling, flexural buckling and interaction of local and flexural buckling. The test strengths obtained from this study and other available data were compared with the design strengths predicted by the American Specification, Australian/New Zealand Standard and European Code for stainless steel structures. It should be noted that these specifications do not cover the material of lean duplex stainless steel. Therefore, the suitability of the beam-column design rules in these specifications for lean duplex stainless steel is assessed in this study. Generally, these specifications are capable of predicting the beam-column strengths of the lean duplex stainless steel test specimens, and the design rules in the specifications are considered to be reliable. It is observed that the European Code generally provides quite conservative predictions for the beam-column specimens compared to the American Specification and Australian/New Zealand Standard predictions.  相似文献

This paper presents the mechanical properties data for cold-formed steel at elevated temperatures. The deterioration of the mechanical properties of yield strength (0.2% proof stress) and elastic modulus are the primary properties in the design and analysis of cold-formed steel structures under fire. However, values of these properties at different temperatures are not well reported. Therefore, both steady and transient tensile coupon tests were conducted at different temperatures ranged approximately from 20 to 1000 °C for obtaining the mechanical properties of cold-formed steel structural material. This study included cold-formed steel grades G550 and G450 with plate thickness of 1.0 and 1.9 mm, respectively. Curves of elastic modulus, yield strength obtained at different strain levels, ultimate strength, ultimate strain and thermal elongation versus different temperatures are plotted and compared with the results obtained from the Australian, British, European standards and the test results predicted by other researchers. A unified equation for yield strength, elastic modulus, ultimate strength and ultimate strain of cold-formed steel at elevated temperatures is proposed in this paper. A full strain range expression up to the ultimate tensile strain for the stress–strain curves of cold-formed carbon steel at elevated temperatures is also proposed in this paper. It is shown that the proposed equation accurately predicted the test results.  相似文献

This paper describes a test program on a wide range of cold-formed stainless steel welded tubular T-joints fabricated from square and rectangular hollow section brace and chord members. A total of 22 tests was performed. High strength stainless steel (duplex and high strength austenitic) and normal strength stainless steel (AISI 304) specimens were tested. The tests were performed by supporting the chord member of the specimen along its entire length with the pure concentrated force applied to the chord face by the brace member. The ratio of brace width to chord width (β) of the specimens varied from 0.5 to 1.0 so that failure modes of chord face failure and chord side wall failure were observed. The test results were compared with the design procedures in the Australian/New Zealand Standard for stainless steel structures, CIDECT and Eurocode design rules for carbon steel structures. It is shown that the design strengths predicted by the current design specifications are conservative for the test specimens calculated using the 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.5% and 1.0% proof stresses as the yield stresses. The 0.2% proof stress is comparatively more reasonable to predict the design strengths of stainless steel welded tubular T-joints for both ultimate limit state and serviceability limit state. In this study, it is shown that the ultimate limit state controls rather than the serviceability limit state for most of the test specimens.  相似文献

The paper summarises research on high strength stainless steel tubular structures conducted at the University of Hong Kong, and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Square and rectangular hollow sections were investigated. The test specimens were cold-rolled from high strength austenitic and duplex stainless steel sheets. The material properties of the test specimens were determined by tensile coupon tests at normal room and elevated temperatures. The initial geometric imperfection and residual stress of the specimens were measured. The experimental and numerical investigation focused on the design and behaviour of cold-formed high strength stainless steel structural members. The results were compared with design strengths calculated using the American, Australian/New Zealand and European specifications for cold-formed stainless steel structures.  相似文献

Experimental investigation of thin-walled concrete-filled steel tube columns with reinforced lattice angle was conducted in this study. The lattice angle was designed to reinforce the concrete-filled steel tube columns by increasing the percentage of steel cross-sectional area. Column specimens having different lengths ranged from 500 mm to 3500 mm were tested. The behavior and strengths of concrete-filled steel tube columns with lattice angle were investigated. In addition, concrete-filled steel tube columns having the same size but without reinforced lattice angle were also tested for comparison. Material properties of the concrete and steel used in the test specimens were measured. The test strengths are compared with the design strengths calculated using the AISC Specification and Eurocode for the design of composite structural members. A new design method was also proposed for the concrete-filled steel tube columns with reinforced lattice angle. It is shown that the design predictions from the proposed method agree with test results well.  相似文献

An experimental investigation into the behaviour of cold-formed plain and lipped channel columns compressed between fixed and pinned ends is presented in this paper. It is shown experimentally that local buckling does not induce overall bending of fixed-ended singly symmetric columns, as it does of pin-ended singly symmetric columns. Consequently, local buckling has a fundamentally different effect on the behaviour of pin-ended and fixed-ended singly symmetric columns. In order to show this fundamental different effect caused by local buckling, a series of tests was performed on plain and lipped channels brake-pressed from high strength structural steel sheets. Four different cross-section geometries were tested over a range of lengths which involved pure local buckling, distortional buckling as well as overall flexural buckling and flexural-torsional buckling. The different effects of local buckling on the behaviour of fixed-ended and pin-ended channels are investigated by comparing strengths, load–shortening and load–deflection curves, as well as longitudinal profiles of buckling deformations. The purpose of the paper is to demonstrate experimentally the different effects of local buckling on the behaviour and strengths of fixed-ended and pin-ended channels.  相似文献

The paper describes a test program on cold-formed high strength stainless steel compression members. The duplex stainless steel having the yield stress and tensile strength up to 750 and 850 MPa, respectively, was investigated. The material properties of the test specimens were obtained from tensile coupon and stub column tests. The test specimens were cold-rolled into square and rectangular hollow sections. The specimens were compressed between fixed ends at different column lengths. The initial overall geometric imperfections of the column specimens were measured. The strength and behaviour of cold-formed high strength stainless steel columns were investigated. The test strengths were compared with the design strengths predicted using the American, Australian/New Zealand and European specifications for cold-formed stainless steel structures. Generally, it is shown that the design strengths predicted by the three specifications are conservative for the cold-formed high strength stainless steel columns. In addition, reliability analysis was performed to evaluate the current design rules.  相似文献
