PURPOSE: To report two cases in which cystoid macular edema developed after initiation of topical latanoprost for glaucoma. METHODS: Case reports. One pseudophakic eye in each of two patients treated with latanoprost for glaucoma developed decreased vision and cystoid macular edema. Latanoprost was discontinued, and the cystoid macular edema was treated with topical corticosteroids and ketorolac. RESULTS: After discontinuing latanoprost and starting corticosteroids and ketorolac, visual acuity improved from counting fingers to 20/60 in one patient's left eye and from 20/100 to 20/25 in the other patient's right eye. The macular edema resolved in both eyes. CONCLUSIONS: Topical latanoprost may be associated with cystoid macular edema; this may be related to a prostaglandin-like action.  相似文献

PURPOSE: To assess the influence of initial preoperative brain edema in malignant gliomas on regrowth patterns. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: 79 patients with histologically verified supratentorial malignant glioma were prospectively studied by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) before and every 2-3 months after surgery. The median follow-up time was 11 months. We correlated the configuration of the initial vasogenic edema on T2-weighted images with tumor regrowth patterns on contrast-enhanced T1-weighted images. RESULTS: 35/47 tumor regrowths (75%) imitated the initial edema configuration, while 11/47 occurred within the initial tumor bed; in one case tumor recurrence was multilocal. CONCLUSION: In glioblastoma, tumor regrowth patterns correlate positively with the configuration of the initial vasogenic brain edema. The initial, "presurgical" peritumoral edema should thus be considered when planning further treatment.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSP) subjected to high sodium intake develop severe hypertension, cerebral edema, and proteinuria, culminating in organ damage and early death. MRI, which can be applied serially, provides the unique opportunity to study temporal and quantitative relations between these changes and whether diminution of sodium intake can attenuate established cerebral edema. METHODS: SHRSP were subjected to 1% NaCl in drinking water. Cerebral MRI, proteinuria and systolic blood pressure (SBP) were measured serially. After detection of cerebral edema (T2-weighted MRI), 6 rats were killed for histology, to confirm the diagnosis of cerebral edema. The others were followed up for 7 more days while salt loading was continued (n = 10, group 1) or after sodium intake was normalized (n = 7, group 2). RESULTS: SHRSP invariably developed cerebral edema in 30 days (range, 8 to 54 days). At this point neurological signs were absent in 16 of 23 rats. SBP rose until 1 week before detection of cerebral edema, and then stabilized at approximately 265 mm Hg. Proteinuria invariably preceded cerebral edema, with a concentration exceeding 40 mg/d predicting development of cerebral edema in 9 days (range, 3 to 15 days). There was linear correlation (R=.62, P<.0001) between proteinuria and cerebral edema (pixels with an intensity above a defined threshold). Rats in group 1 showed an increase in cerebral edema (from 5.8+/-1.1% to 12.5+/-2.8%; P<.05), and proteinuria remained high (from 305+/-44 to 338+/-29 mg/d); and 2 died spontaneously. Rats in group 2 showed no significant change in edema (from 4.9+/-0.5% to 6.9+/-1.3%) but a marked fall in proteinuria (from 294+/-24 to 119+/-10 mg/d; P<.05), both significantly different from group 1 (P<.05); all survived. SBP remained unaltered in both groups. CONCLUSIONS: Our data establish MRI as a sensitive method for detection of cerebral edema, often prior to neurological signs, in SHRSP. Proteinuria predicts cerebral edema, and these two variables, both obtained noninvasively, are quantitatively related. Moreover, in SHRSP normalizing sodium intake after salt loading attenuates development of cerebral edema and reduces proteinuria.  相似文献

We present a 79 year old female patient with dysphagia since two years. She showed also a lack of initiation and dysphonia. In the region of the larynx an edema was found and the tongue was hypertrophied. The X-ray examination demonstrated a dilated esophagus without impairment of the passage way. Esophagoscopy showed also important edema in the hypopharynx and the entry into the esophagus. The TSH-0 was 74.45 mmu/l, the T3 0.23 and the T4 was 24 nmol/l. Scintigraphically an only cherry-stone small region with active thyroid tissue was revealed. Severe hypothyroidism responsible for secondary dysphagia was diagnosed. L-Thyroxin was administered (150 micrograms/d). There was a dramatical improvement. The signs of edema and the dysphagia decreased. The examination a half year later demonstrated a patient without any dysphagia or edema. The symptom dysphagia is defined and an interdisciplinary approach emphasized.  相似文献

Alpha-difluoromethylornithine (DFMO) was used to reduce 125I-induced brain injury in normal beagle dogs. Different DFMO doses and administration schedules were used to determine if the reduction in brain injury was dependent on dose and/or dependent upon when the drug was administered relative to the radiation treatment. Doses of DFMO of 75 mg/kg/day and 37.5 mg/kg/day given 2 days before, during and for 14 days after irradiation reduced levels of putrescine (PU) in the cerebrospinal fluid relative to controls. Volume of edema was significantly reduced by 75 mg/kg/day of DFMO before, during and after irradiation and by the same dose when the drug was started immediately after irradiation. A reduction in edema volume after 37.5 mg/kg/day before, during and after irradiation was very near significance. Ultrafast CT studies performed on dogs that received a DFMO dose of 75 mg/kg/day before, during and after irradiation suggested that the reduced edema volume was associated with reduced vascular permeability. Volume of necrosis and volume of contrast enhancement (breakdown of the blood-brain barrier) were significantly lower than controls only after a DFMO dose of 75 mg/kg/day before, during and after irradiation. These latter data, coupled with the findings relative to edema, suggest that different mechanisms may be involved with respect to the effects of DFMO on brain injury, or that the extents of edema, necrosis and breakdown of the blood-brain barrier may depend upon different levels of polyamine depletion. The precise mechanisms by which DFMO exerts the effects observed here need to be determined.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSP), subjected to high NaCl intake, show severe hypertension, organ damage, and early death. Preventive treatment with an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor is known to reduce mortality. Previously we found that proteinuria always precedes cerebral edema in SHRSP. Hence, in this study ACE inhibition was started later, ie, directly after manifestation of either proteinuria or cerebral edema. METHODS: SHRSP were subjected to 1% NaCl intake. Group 1 served as a control. In group 2 early-onset treatment with the ACE inhibitor enalapril was initiated after proteinuria was >40 mg/d. In group 3 late-onset ACE inhibition was started after the first observation of cerebral edema with T2-weighted MRI. Cerebral edema was expressed as the percentage of pixels with an intensity above a defined threshold. RESULTS: In controls median survival was 54 days (range, 32 to 80 days) after start of salt loading. The terminal level of cerebral edema was 19.0+/-3.0%. Under early-onset enalapril, median survival increased to 320 days (range, 134 to 368 days; P<0.01 versus group 1). Cerebral edema was prevented in all but 1 rat. Systolic blood pressure was slightly and transiently reduced at day 14. Proteinuria was markedly reduced (52+/-7 versus 190+/-46 mg/d in group 1 at day 7; P<0.05). Under late-onset enalapril, median survival was 264 days (range, 154 to 319 days; P<0.01 versus group 1). Cerebral edema decreased to baseline levels (9.6+/-2.9 at day 0 to 3.4+/-0.5% at day 3; (P<0.05). Ultimately cerebral edema reoccurred in 6 of the 8 rats. SBP decreased slightly at day 7 only. Proteinuria decreased from 283+/-27 at day 0 to 116+/-22 mg/d at day 7 (P<0.05). Complete remission of the original locus of cerebral edema was confirmed histologically. CONCLUSIONS: In SHRSP with proteinuria, treatment with an ACE inhibitor both prevented the development of cerebral edema and reduced manifest cerebral edema and proteinuria. Survival was markedly prolonged. These findings support the use of ACE inhibition for treatment in hypertensive encephalopathy.  相似文献

Three female patients with a previously poorly controlled Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (IDDM), without evidence of cardiovascular, hepatic or renal dysfunction, developed generalized edema after a substantial increase in their insulin dosage. Edema resolved in 2-3 weeks, without specific therapy. Our patient's findings met the criteria of diagnosis of insulin edema. Insulin edema during IDDM is an uncommon complication of insulin therapy (1/400) and its pathogenesis is not clarified so far; it is a transient and self-limiting condition. The diagnosis is based on exclusion of all other major causes of edema.  相似文献

Human immunodeficiency virus nephropathy (HIVN) continues to challenge nephrologic consultative services at major urban institutions. Although noted in the literature, the decreased incidence of peripheral edema in HIVN has been unexplained to date. In HIV patients, total proteins frequently are found to be elevated due to an elevated globulin fraction. The impact that plasma proteins, specifically globulins, have on the total oncotic pressure has not been reported in HIVN, but may play a role in the paucity of edema noted in this proteinuric population. To evaluate the contributions of serum globulin to the total oncotic pressure and the presence or absence of edema in HIVN, we randomly selected 27 patients with proteinuria greater than 2.5 g/24 hr and serum albumin less than 3.1 g/dL from patients presenting to the nephrology outpatient clinic at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital. Seventeen of the patients (63%) had a known diagnosis of HIV infection (group 1). These patients were subdivided into two subgroups: those presenting with clinically evident edema on physical examination (n = 7 [41%]; group 1A) and those who had an absence of edema (n = 10 [59%]; group 1B). Conversely, group 2 comprised 10 patients without known HIV infection, of whom six (60%) had edema (group 2A) and four (40%) did not (group 2B). Blood pressures were noted, and mean arterial pressure was calculated using standard formulas. Serum albumin, serum total proteins, and urine total proteins were measured using standard laboratory methods. Oncotic pressures for albumin (alpha), globulin (beta), and total protein (c) were calculated using the following formula: COPpl = alpha(2.8c + 0.18c2 + 0.012c3) + beta(0.9c + 0.12c2 + 0.004c3). We used Student's t-test to analyze the data. There is no significant difference between the albumin concentrations of HIV patients without edema (group 1B) and non-HIV patients with edema (group 2A), with mean concentrations of 2.3 +/- 0.1 g/dL versus 2.3 +/- 0.15 g/dL, respectively (P = NS). Group 1B, however, has a total oncotic pressure of 17.1 +/- 1.5 mm Hg, whereas both groups with edema (groups 1A and 2A) have statistically significant lower total oncotic pressures (12.1 +/- 2.3 mm Hg and 12.9 +/- 1.1 mm Hg, respectively; P < 0.05). The globulin oncotic pressures may account for some of the differences in total oncotic pressures, being significantly higher for those patients without edema in group 1B compared with group 2A (7.1 +/- 0.9 mm Hg v 3.9 +/- 0.4 mm Hg, respectively; P < 0.05). In patients with HIV, however, the presence or absence of edema is mandated by albumin concentration because both groups have similar globulin concentrations (group 1A 3.1 +/- 0.1 g/dL v group 1B 3.8 +/- 0.3 g/dL; P = NS). Mean arterial pressure does not play a role in edema formation in this study because the HIV patients without edema had the higher blood pressures (group 1B 97.8 +/- 4.7 mm Hg v group 2A 84.7 +/- 5.5 mm Hg; P < 0.05). We conclude that globulins play an important role in maintaining oncotic pressure in low albumin states. HIVN patients with increased serum immune globulin may benefit from higher globulin oncotic pressure, delaying the onset of clinical edema in the setting of proteinuria.  相似文献

Paw edema was induced in male Wistar rats (200-250 g) by intraplantar (ipl) administration of 2.5 micrograms endotoxin (Etx). Etx, like carrageenin, produced two distinct edema formation phases, an early phase (75 min) followed by a late phase (7 h). We showed that the edema formation in the early phase was antagonized by dipyrone (80 mg/kg, i.p.) and indomethacin (1 mg/kg, i.p.) by 52% and 55%, respectively, and that the late phase was resistant to these drugs. These results suggest that in the early phase prostaglandins appear to be involved in the process. However, the activation of the kinin cascade leading to the release of other mediators may be involved in the increase of edema in the late phase. To test this hypothesis, we investigated whether the release of nitric oxide (NO) is involved in the mechanism of endotoxin-induced rat paw edema during the late phase, using N omega-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) (50 micrograms, ipl) as inhibitor of NO synthase and L-arginine (1 mg, ipl) as substrate of NO synthase. The paw edema induced by Etx was inhibited by L-NAME by 56% and increased by L-arginine by 81%. Furthermore, L-arginine given in combination with L-NAME completely reversed the inhibition of Etx-induced edema produced by L-NAME. These results support the hypothesis that in the late phase NO production is associated with the edema evoked by Etx.  相似文献

Thirteen years after cataract extraction, a patient complained of diminished visual acuity. In the interim visual acuity was 6/6 (20/20), or 6/7.5 (20/25+2). Fluorescein angiography demonstrated cystoid macular edema. Except for vitreous adherence to the inner surface of the cataract wound, no ocular cause for the macular edema was apparent.  相似文献

PURPOSE: To characterize the magnitude and duration of post-implant edema following the implantation of I-125 or Pd-103 seeds into the prostate and to investigate its effect on the CT-based calculation of the total dose delivered by the implant. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A pre-implant CT scan and 3 to 5 serial post-implant CT scans were obtained on 10 patients who received either I-125 or Pd-103 seed implants. None of the patients received hormone therapy. The magnitude and duration of edema were determined from the change in the spatial distribution of the implanted seeds as the edema resolves. Dose volume histograms were compiled to determine the percentage of the prostate volume that received a dose equal to, or greater than, the prescribed dose. RESULTS: The magnitude of the edema, expressed as the ratio of the post- to pre-implant volume on the day of the procedure, ranged from 1.33 to 1.96 (mean 1.52). The edema decreased exponentially with time; however, the edema half-life (time for the edema to decrease by 1/2) varied from 4 to 25 days (mean 9.3 days). As the edema resolved, the percentage of the prostate that received a dose equal to or greater than the prescribed dose increased by at least 7% in 7 of the 10 patients and increased by more than 15% in 2. In those patients in whom dose coverage was unaffected by the resolution of edema, more than 90% of the prostate was covered by the prescribed dose in the initial CT scan. CONCLUSION: Post-implant edema increased the prostate volume by factors which ranged from 1.33 to 1.96 (mean: 1.52). The edema resolved exponentially with an edema half-life which varied from 4 to 25 days (mean: 9.3 days). Edema had a significant effect on the post-implant dosimetry in 7 of 10 cases. Factors that affect the impact of edema on the dosimetry are the magnitude of the edema and the planned margin between the prescribed isodose line and the periphery of the prostate.  相似文献

Phentolamine in amounts of 10 to 40 microgram/kg/min was infused intravenously for the emergency treatment of acute pulmonary edema due to left ventricular failure. Fourteen patients with arteriosclerotic heart disease, ranging in age from 52 to 87 years, had clinical and roentgenographic signs of pulmonary edema. The pulmonary artery wedge pressure was increased to an average of 24 mm Hg and the cardiac index was decreased to 1.9 liters/min/m2 or less prior to the administration of phentolamine. A reduction in the pulmonary artery wedge pressure to 14 mm Hg and an increase in the cardiac index to 2.5 liters/min/m2 was observed in response to this alpha adrenergic blocking agent. Reduction in peripheral resistance with phentolamine was associated with reversal of pulmonary edema.  相似文献

We have attempted to identify any characteristics which could be used to predict the development of cerebral edema in four children under 5 years of age with new onset insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and diabetic ketoacidosis. We retrospectively analysed and compared the concentration of serum sodium (corrected for serum glucose value) and effective serum osmolality of these 4 children with values of 10 age-matched controls with new onset insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus who did not develop cerebral edema during treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis. The initial serum sodium values of the two groups were not statistically different. Patients who developed cerebral edema had lower initial serum glucose values and effective serum osmolality. During treatment, patients who developed cerebral edema had consistently lower mean serum sodium and osmolality than controls at each 4-h interval after the first 4 h of therapy. Serum sodium and osmolality declined progressively after the initiation of therapy in cerebral edema patients, while remaining stable in controls. These data suggest that children who develop cerebral edema during treatment for diabetic ketoacidosis initially may have a relatively normal serum osmolality and subsequently develop progressive hyponatremia and/or a trend of declining serum sodium before developing cerebral edema.  相似文献

Transient pulmonary hypertension after inhibition of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) does not alter pulmonary reflection coefficients or lymph flows in endotoxemic sheep. To test the effects of persistent pulmonary hypertension induced by N omega-nitro-L-arginine methylester (L-NAME) and of inhaled NO on pulmonary edema, 18 sheep (three groups) were chronically instrumented with pulmonary artery catheters, femoral arterial fiberoptic thermistor catheters, and tracheostomy. The awake, spontaneously breathing animals received Salmonella typhi endotoxin (lipopolysaccharide; LPS) (10 ng/kg/ min) for 28 h. After 24 h, an airflow of 6 L/min was delivered through the tracheostomy. One group of animals (L-NAME/air) received L-NAME intravenously (25 mg/kg + 5 mg/kg/h) and breathed air. The second group (L-NAME/NO) was given L-NAME and NO (40 ppm) was added to the airflow. The third group was given NaCl 0.9% and breathed air (NaCl/air). Extravascular lung water was measured through the double-indicator dilution technique. Endotoxemia caused pulmonary edema, which was aggravated by L-NAME. Breathing of NO normalized pulmonary artery pressure (Ppa) and ameliorated pulmonary edema. Inhalation of NO may therefore be a therapeutic option for pulmonary edema associated with pulmonary hypertension.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Growth rates and tumor aggressiveness of meningiomas are thought to be closely related to brain edema development. However, histopathologic data alone are not consistently accurate predictors of the behavior and clinical course of a meningioma. METHODS: The authors examined 57 histologically proven intracranial meningiomas to identify factors, including growth fractions determined by MIB-1 immunostaining, that may influence the development of meningioma-associated peritumoral brain edema. There were 54 benign, 2 atypical, and 1 anaplastic meningiomas. The MIB-1 staining index (SI) percentage was defined as the number of MIB-1 positive cells divided by the total number of tumor cells in a 1.037-square millimeter area on the slide. The extent of peritumoral brain edema was determined using preoperative magnetic resonance imaging. The extent of edema was classified as Grade 0,1, or 2 (GR0, GR1, or GR2), in order of increasing severity. RESULTS: The MIB-1 SIs of the 57 cases ranged from 0.06-6.8% (median, 0.80%). There were 26 GR0, 20 GR1, and 11 GR2 edema cases. The MIB-1 SI rose in order of increasing edema severity. There was a statistically significant correlation between the MIB-1 SI and the extent of brain edema (P<0.0001), and also between the tumor size and the extent of brain edema (P=0.001). Meningothelial and atypical/anaplastic meningiomas were associated with peritumoral brain edema more often than any other subtype (P<0.005). CONCLUSIONS: Growth fractions, as determined by MIB-1 immunostaining, rise with increasing severity of peritumoral brain edema, indicating a close relationship between tumor aggressiveness and edema development.  相似文献

Exposure to hyperoxia causes lung injury, decreases active sodium transport and lung edema clearance in rats. Dopamine (DA) increases lung edema clearance by stimulating vectorial Na+ flux and Na, K-ATPase function in rat alveolar epithelium. This study was designed to test whether DA (10(-)5 M) would increase lung edema clearance in rats exposed to 100% O2 for 64 h. Active Na+ transport and lung edema clearance decreased by approximately 44% in rats exposed to acute hyperoxia (p < 0.001). DA increased lung edema clearance in room air breathing rats (from 0.50 +/- 0.02 to 0.75 +/- 0.06 ml/h) and in rats exposed to 100% O2 (from 0.28 +/- 0.03 to 0. 67 +/- 0.03 ml/h). Disruption of cell microtubular transport system by colchicine blocked the stimulatory effect of DA on active Na+ transport in control and hyperoxic rats, whereas the isomer beta-lumicolchicine, which does not affect cell microtubular transport, did not inhibit the stimulatory effects of dopamine. The Na,K-ATPase alpha1-subunit protein abundance increased in the basolateral membranes of alveolar type II (ATII) cells incubated with 10(-)5 M DA for 15 min, probably by recruiting Na+ pumps from intracellular pools. Colchicine, but not beta-lumicolchicine, prevented the recruitment of alpha1 subunits to the plasma membrane by DA. Accordingly, DA restored lung ability to clear edema in hyperoxic-injured rat lungs. Conceivably, dopamine induces recruitment of Na+ pumps from intracellular pools to the plasma membrane of alveolar epithelial cells and thus increases lung edema clearance.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: Vascular permeability factor/vascular endothelial growth factor (VPF/VEGF), an endothelial cell-specific cytokine, induces proliferation of endothelial cells and increases vascular permeability dramatically. All gliomas secrete significant amounts of VEGF, whereas meningiomas are variable in expression. Thus, we sought to determine whether the extent of VPF/VEGF expression in meningiomas correlated with differences in brain edema associated with these tumors. METHODS: Meningioma tissue samples from 37 patients (15 men, average age 65 +/- 13 yr; 22 women, average age 60 +/- 10 yr) who underwent surgery at or were referred to the University of Alabama Hospital were examined retrospectively for the extent of expression of immunoreactive VPF/VEGF. Additionally, peritumoral edema was assessed on a blinded basis radiographically from preoperative magnetic resonance imaging scans. Selected specimens were examined by in situ hybridization to document the source of VPF/VEGF. RESULTS: The predominant meningioma subclassifications were transitional (57%) or meningothelial (27%) subtypes. VPF/VEGF immunoreactivity ranged from 0 to 3.5, with a median value of 2 on a subjective 5-point scale; magnetic resonance imaging-assessed edema ranged in extent from 0 to 4 (subjective 5-point scale), with a median value of 2.5. The correlation of determination (R2) of magnetic resonance imaging-assessed tumor edema rating and VPF/VEGF staining intensity rating was 0.6087 (r = 0.78; P = 0.0001). In situ hybridization localized VPF/VEGF messenger ribonucleic acid in meningioma cells and not in normal parenchymal brain cells. CONCLUSION: These data suggest that meningioma-associated edema may be a result of the capacity of meningioma cells to produce VPF/VEGF locally, leading to increased tumor neovascularization and enhanced vascular permeability.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of continuous hypertonic (3%) saline/acetate infusion on intracranial pressure (ICP) and lateral displacement of the brain in patients with cerebral edema. DESIGN: Retrospective chart review. SETTINGS: Neurocritical care unit of a university hospital. PATIENTS: Twenty-seven consecutive patients with cerebral edema (30 episodes), including patients with head trauma (n = 8), postoperative edema (n = 5), nontraumatic intracranial hemorrhage (n = 8), and cerebral infarction (n = 6). INTERVENTION: Intravenous infusion of 3% saline/acetate to increase serum sodium concentrations to 145 to 155 mmol/L. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: A reduction in mean ICP within the first 12 hrs correlating with an increase in the serum sodium concentration was observed in patients with head trauma (r2 = .91, p = .03), and postoperative edema (r2 = .82, p = .06), but not in patients with nontraumatic intracranial hemorrhage or cerebral infarction. In patients with head trauma, the beneficial effect of hypertonic saline on ICP was short-lasting, and after 72 hrs of infusion, four patients required intravenous pentobarbital due to poor ICP control. Among the 21 patients who had a repeat computed tomographic scan within 72 hrs of initiating hypertonic saline, lateral displacement of the brain was reduced in patients with head trauma (2.8 +/- 1.4 to 1.1 +/- 0.9 [SEM]) and in patients with postoperative edema (3.1 +/- 1.6 to 1.1 +/- 0.7). This effect was not observed in patients with nontraumatic intracranial bleeding or cerebral infarction. The treatment was terminated in three patients due to the development of pulmonary edema, and was terminated in another three patients due to development of diabetes insipidus. CONCLUSIONS: Hypertonic saline administration as a 3% infusion appears to be a promising therapy for cerebral edema in patients with head trauma or postoperative edema. Further studies are required to determine the optimal duration of benefit and the specific patient population that is most likely to benefit from this treatment.  相似文献

We report a case with idiopathic edema accompanied with excessive sweating on bathing. The subject is a 26 year-old male. He was admitted to our hospital because of pretibial edema. He complained of excessive sweating only after daily bathing. Sweating on daily bathing reduced pretibial edema after long-term standing. Daily urine volume decreased by about 200 to 500 mL/day on bathing everyday. Plasma renin, aldosterone and bradykinin levels increased. Subcutaneous injection of pilocarpine increased sweating around the injection site. The cessation of daily bathing restored plasma renin, aldosterone and bradykinin levels; urine volumes increased. However, pretibial edema appeared and body weight increased by 8.5 Kg. Serum triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4) levels and basal metabolic rate (BMR) decreased. Circulating plasma volume increased with the cessation of bathing. Alterations in the autonomic nervous system may be involved in the appearance of general edema through increased plasma volume due to altered sweating function.  相似文献
