An adult, intact female Australian shepherd presented for frank vaginal bleeding of unknown duration. The only coagulation profile abnormality upon presentation was mild prolongation of the partial thromboplastin time (PTT). The uterus was removed at surgery and contained a large amount of coagulated blood. Clotting profiles were markedly abnormal 48 hours postoperatively. Serum analysis was positive for brodifacoum, an anticoagulant rodenticide. Preoperative coagulation was most likely normalized by vitamin K1 therapy administered prior to presentation. The only manifestation of anticoagulant rodenticide was hematometra. Rodenticide intoxication should be considered in the differential diagnosis list of hematometra or metrorrhagia.  相似文献

A dose of 200 cGy of total-body irradiation (TBI) is nonlethal in dogs: Following a granulocyte nadir in the third week post-TBI, peripheral blood cell counts recover to normal values by about 5 weeks. In the context of studies on a potential role of major histocompatibility (MHC) class II antigens in the regulation of stress hematopoiesis, we tested the effect of anti-MHC class II monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) on hematologic recovery after TBI. Thirteen dogs were given 200 cGy of TBI not followed by marrow infusion. Five received no additional treatment (concurrent controls) and eight were given daily intravenous (IV) injections of anti-class II mAbs H81.9 (anti-HLA-DR; n = 6) or B1F6 (anti-HLA-DR and -DP; n = 2) at 0.6 (n = 4) or 1.2 mg/kg/d (n = 4) on days 0-4 (n = 7) or days 0-9 (n = 1). One control dog died early from an intercurrent infection and four recovered uneventfully. Dogs given mAbs after TBI showed significantly different granulocyte and platelet kinetics. The granulocyte nadir was lower (p = 0.09) and was reached later (p = 0.005), the duration of neutropenia was longer (p = 0.08), and recovery occurred later (p = 0.02) than among controls. Similarly the platelet nadir was lower (p = 0.05), thrombocytopenia lasted longer (p = 0.02), and recovery occurred later (p = 0.02) than among controls. Four of eight mAb-treated dogs died with marrow aplasia. We propose that following irradiation, HLA-DR mediated signals result in terminal differentiation in more mature hematopoietic precursors but interfere with replication or differentiation in early hematopoietic precursors. These observations suggest a role for MHC class II molecules in the regulation of stress hematopoiesis.  相似文献

1. Between 1989 and 1991, 121,708 children less than 10 years old attended 22 Accident and Emergency (A & E) Departments in the UK as a result of an accident at home; 6,478 of these were cases of suspected poisoning. 2. Two hundred and fifty (124 boys and 126 girls) of 6,478 cases involved pesticides. Forty two per cent of these children were thought to have been poisoned by rodenticides, 33% by a different animal poison, 13% by an herbicide or fungicide, 7% by creosote and 5% by mothballs; a pattern similar to that observed in previous years. 3. Fifty-seven of 250 children (23%) were admitted to hospital. The proportion of children admitted to hospital between 1989 and 1991 is smaller than that observed between 1982-1988 (37%). Forty-six per cent of children were discharged home within one day and 95% within 2 days, whereas between 1982 and 1988 only 35% of children were discharged within one day. No child died during the study confirming the low morbidity. 4. Using these data we estimate that between 1989 and 1991 approximately 1,500 children annually attended an A & E Department in the UK with a diagnosis of suspected pesticide poisoning and that some 350 children were admitted each year.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of attenuated wavy fibers in the myocardium of dogs with and without dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). DESIGN: Prevalence survey. ANIMALS: 70 dogs clinically suspected to have DCM (ie, fractional shortening < 25%, absence of echocardiographic lesions other than chamber dilatation, and radiographic or postmortem evidence of congestive heart failure) and 147 dogs with chronic valvular disease (n = 60), congenital heart disease (49), myocardial infarcts (23), myocarditis (8), or endocarditis (7). PROCEDURE: Echocardiography and electrocardiography were performed, and thoracic radiographs were obtained with dogs in left lateral recumbency. Necropsy specimens were examined for attenuated wavy fibers (ie, myocardial cells < 6 microns in diameter with a wavy appearance). RESULTS: 65 of 70 dogs clinically suspected to have DCM were confirmed to have the disease on postmortem examination, and 64 of 65 had attenuated wavy fibers. The remaining 5 dogs were found during postmortem examination to have heart disease other than DCM, and none had attenuated wavy fibers. Only 1 of 147 dogs with heart disease other than DCM had attenuated wavy fibers. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Findings suggest that histologic examination for attenuated wavy fibers may be a useful postmortem test for DCM in dogs. The diagnosis was confirmed in 65 of 70 dogs suspected to have DCM on the basis of standard clinical criteria.  相似文献

1. Paracetamol is increasingly involved in self-poisoning in the United Kingdom and remains a common cause of fatal poisoning. 2. To document the epidemiology and early management of paracetamol poisoning data were collected on consecutive patients with suspected paracetamol poisoning presenting to 6 hospitals in the North East of England over 12 weeks in 1994. 3. There were 400 presentations (attendance rate 1.14/10(3) population/yr) involving 343 persons (45% male). Paracetamol concentrations at 4 h correlated weakly with reported paracetamol dose (R = 0.49, P < 0.0001) and were similar comparing those treated and not treated by gastric decontamination. 4. In 38 (9%) cases paracetamol concentrations were above the appropriate nomogram treatment line, including 3% and 20% of patients who reported ingesting less than and more than 12 g respectively. In 21 patients acetylcysteine treatment was deferred until admission to the ward, the mean delay involved was 2.8 h. 5. One patient died, from arrhythmias caused by co-ingested dothiepin. 6. Paracetamol poisoning is common. Most cases do not have potentially toxic plasma paracetamol concentrations, but those who do often present late and antidotal treatment may be delayed inappropriately.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of balloon occlusion of the proximal descending aorta during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on hemodynamics, restoration of spontaneous circulation, and 24-hr survival. DESIGN: Prospective, randomized, controlled trial. SETTING: Experimental laboratory in a university hospital. SUBJECTS: Eighteen anesthetized dogs. INTERVENTIONS; Catheters were placed for hemodynamic and blood gas monitoring. An aortic balloon catheter was placed with its tip just distal to the left subclavian artery. After 10 mins of ventricular fibrillation without CPR, 3 mins of Basic Life Support (chest compressions and ventilation with 100% oxygen) was followed by up to 30 mins of Advanced Cardiac Life Support with canine drug dosages. In the treatment group (n = 8), the intra-aortic balloon was inflated when Advanced Cardiac Life Support started and not deflated until shortly after restoration of spontaneous circulation. The control animals (n = 10) were treated with an identical resuscitation but without intra-aortic balloon occlusion. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: In the treatment group, coronary perfusion pressure was greater during Advanced Cardiac Life Support (p = .026). Restoration of spontaneous circulation was more frequent (7/8 dogs) as compared with the control group (3/10 dogs) (p = .025). There was a trend toward greater 24-hr survival in the treatment group (5/8 dogs) than in the control group (3/10 dogs). CONCLUSIONS: Balloon occlusion of the proximal descending aorta during experimental CPR improves restoration of spontaneous circulation. Further laboratory and human studies are needed to determine the clinical efficacy of this technique.  相似文献

Serum samples from 996 dogs in Switzerland were examined for antibodies to Ehrlichia canis and to the agent causing canine granulocytic ehrlichiosis (CGE). Ehrlichiosis, borreliosis, and systemic illness not associated with ticks were suspected in 75, 122, and 157 of these dogs, respectively. The remainder of the serum samples were obtained from clinically healthy dogs which resided north (n = 235) or south (n = 407) of the Alps. The serum samples were tested by an indirect immunofluorescence technique for antibodies to the two agents incriminated, E. canis and Ehrlichia phagocytophila, a surrogate marker of the agent of CGE. Twenty-two of 996 (2.2%) serum samples had antibodies to E. canis and were distributed as follows: 20 of 75 (26.7%) samples from dogs suspected of having ehrlichiosis, 1 of 122 (0.8%) from dogs suspected of having borreliosis, and 1 of 407 (0.2%) from healthy dogs which resided south of the Alps. Of the 75 (7.5%) serum samples that had antibodies to E. phagocytophila, significantly more samples were from ill dogs than from healthy dogs. Among the sera from healthy dogs, antibodies to E. phagocytophila were significantly more prevalent in the north. Because seropositive dogs had a history of travel outside Switzerland and because Rhipicephalus sanguineus is found exclusively south of the Alps, it was presumed that, in contrast to the agent of CGE, E. canis is not indigenous to Switzerland.  相似文献

We evaluated the development of nephrotoxicosis in 64 dogs with malignant neoplasia given cisplatin during 4-hour saline solution diuresis. Cisplatin (70 mg/m2 of body surface area, IV, q 21 d) was given to 8 dogs once, 22 dogs twice, 9 dogs 3 times, and 25 dogs 4 times. For each treatment, cisplatin was given over a 20-minute period after saline (0.9% NaCl) solution was administered IV for 3 hours at a rate of 25 ml/kg/h. After cisplatin infusion, saline solution diuresis was continued at the same rate for 1 hour. Before each treatment with cisplatin, the dogs were evaluated by conducting a physical examination, CBC; and analysis of serum urea nitrogen and creatinine concentrations, and in most cases, serum phosphorus concentration and urine specific gravity were determined. Exogenous creatinine clearance also was evaluated in 8 dogs prior to 1 (n = 8), 2 (n = 8), 3 (n = 6), and 4 (n = 4) treatments. Five (7.8%) of 64 dogs developed clinically evident renal disease after two (n = 3) and three (n = 2) doses of cisplatin. Two of the 5 dogs had preexisting diseases of the urinary tract prior to the start of treatment. Survival time in dogs that developed renal disease (median, 114 days; range, 26 to 273 days) was similar to that of all dogs in this study (median, 145 days; range, 5 to 586 days), with 30 dogs still alive at the conclusion of the study. Three of the 5 dogs that developed renal disease were alive at the conclusion of the study, 1 died of tumor-related causes, and another died as a direct result of nephrotoxicosis. There was a significant (P < 0.05) decrease in median neutrophil counts and a significant (P < 0.05) increase in median creatinine concentrations prior to the third and fourth treatments, compared with pretreatment values.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Vascular anomalies, including hemangiomas and vascular malformations afford complex diagnostic and therapeutic challenges when gastrointestinal (GI) manifestations are present. METHODS: Twenty-one patients evaluated or treated in our Vascular Anomalies Program from 1993 through 1997 were reviewed retrospectively with regard to presentation, treatment modalities, and outcome. RESULTS: Four patients had hemangiomas, and 17 had various vascular malformations. GI symptoms began in infancy or early childhood in all patients. Manifestations included GI bleeding (n = 15), obstruction (n = 2), diarrhea (n = 2), ascites (n = 2), pain (n = 1), emesis (n = 1), ileo-ileal intussusception (n = 1), protein-losing enteropathy (n = 1), and hypersplenism (n = 1). Four patients had proven portal hypertension. Fourteen had associated musculoskeletal or cutaneous lesions. Congestive heart failure, partial anomalous pulmonary venous return, pulmonary edema, and pleural or pericardial effusion occurred in one patient each. Bleeding was the most common symptom of both hemangiomas and malformations. Of four patients with hemangiomas, three were treated with corticosteroids or interferon. Endoscopic banding and embolization of an associated arterioportal hepatic shunt were each used in one patient. One patient died. The malformations were treated with resection (n = 8), endoscopic banding or sclerosis (n = 7), percutaneous or intraoperative sclerosis (n = 5), embolization or device interruption (n = 3), and portosystemic shunt (n = 2). GI symptoms were ameliorated in 12 patients with malformation, improved in two, unchanged in two, and one died after prolonged palliation. CONCLUSIONS: Vascular anomalies with gastrointestinal manifestations are heterogeneous in their presentation and type. Although bleeding is the most common symptom of both hemangiomas and vascular malformations, treatment differs. Pharmacological angiogenesis inhibition is the mainstay of hemangioma therapy. Resection, endoscopic or radiologic vascular obliteration, and portal decompression are important in treating vascular malformations. An individualized and interdisciplinary approach is often required to successfully diagnose and treat these complex lesions.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the safety of withholding anticoagulant treatment from patients with clinically suspected deep vein thrombosis but normal findings on compression ultrasonography. DESIGN: Compression ultrasonography was done with a simplified diagnostic procedure limited to the common femoral vein in the groin and the popliteal vein extending down to the trifurcation of the calf veins. Patients with normal ultrasonography findings at presentation were retested 1 week later. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: The incidence of venous thromboembolic complications during follow up for 6 months in patients in whom anticoagulant treatment was withheld on the basis of normal results on two ultrasonography tests 1 week apart. SETTING: University research centres in four hospitals. RESULTS: A total of 1702 patients were included in the study. Abnormal results on compression ultrasonography at presentation or at 1 week were found in 400 and 12 patients, respectively, for a prevalence of deep vein thrombosis of 24%. None of the patients were lost to follow up. Venous thromboembolic complications during the week of serial testing occurred in a single patient and in eight patients during 6 months' follow up, resulting in a cumulative rate of venous thromboembolic complications of 0.7% (95% confidence interval 0.3% to 1.2%). The mean number of extra hospital visits and additional tests required per initially referred patient was 0.8. CONCLUSION: It is safe to withhold anticoagulant treatment from patients with clinically suspected deep vein thrombosis who have a normal result on compression ultrasonography at the time of presentation and at 1 week.  相似文献

These experiments were designed to establish an animal model of acute carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning in awake habituated rats. On the day before exposure, under a brief anesthesia, a Levine preparation (unilateral common carotid artery occlusion) was performed on group 1 (n = 8) and 2 (n = 28), but not on group 3 rats (n = 8). Group 1 rats were exposed to air as control. Groups 2 and 3 rats were exposed to 0.27% CO in air for 60 min [carboxyhemoglobin (HbCO) = 70%] followed by a 2-day recovery in air. The Levine preparation per se did not induce any detectable physiologic effects on group 1 rats. Identical cardiovascular and metabolic responses to CO occurred in groups 2 and 3. After the CO exposure, all group 3 rats lived for 2 days with normal neurologic index (NI). In group 2 (n = 25 post-CO), 84% of the rats showed increased NI and edema of the ipsilateral cerebral hemisphere, and 76% of the rats died 8.7 +/- 1.7 h after the CO exposure. NI correlated with the brain edema (rs = 0.748, P < 0.001) and inversely correlated with the survival time after the CO exposure (rs = -0.777, P < 0.001). We therefore may conclude that exposure of the Levine-prepared rats to 0.27% CO in air for 60 min will provide a valuable model for testing of different treatments for CO poisoning.  相似文献

A card survey was sent to 340 veterinarians in the Urban, Delta, Highland and Coastal Plain regions of Arkansas. Veterinarians were asked to indicate numbers of dogs tested, confirmed Dirofilaria immitis positive, diagnostic techniques, frequency and period tested. A significantly greater percentage of dogs tested D. immitis positive in the Delta region as compared with the Urban region. There were no significant differences in the percentage of treated dogs on prophylaxis or the types of diagnostic tests among regions.  相似文献

Case records of 64 dogs with nasal adenocarcinoma were reviewed. The effects of age, gender, tumor stage, presence of metastatic lesions, and treatment method on survival time were examined. Surgery groups included rhinotomy (n = 9), transnasal curettage (n = 29), and no surgery (n = 26). Chemotherapy groups included fluorouracil-cyclophosphamide combination therapy (n = 15), mitoxantrone (n = 7), and no chemotherapy (n = 42). Fifty-three dogs received fractionated cobalt 60 radiation therapy. Surgical procedure, chemotherapy group, and stage of primary tumor were not significantly associated with survival time (P > .05). Dogs that received radiation therapy had a significantly longer median survival time (424 days) than dogs that did not (126 days)(P = .0001). The presence of either regional lymph node or pulmonary metastasis was associated with significantly shorter median survival time (109 days) when compared to dogs without metastases (393 days)(P = .0125). When only dogs that had received radiation therapy were considered, neither surgical treatment nor chemotherapy group was associated with significant changes in median survival time. An alternate staging system emphasizing the presence or absence of metastases is proposed.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: We determined the effect of adjunctive inhibition of the extrinsic coagulation pathway by factor VIIa-tissue factor complex inhibitors, DEGR VIIa and tissue factor pathway inhibitor (TFPI), and the selective factor Xa inhibitor, tick anticoagulant peptide (TAP), after thrombolytic therapy with tissue-type plasminogen activator (t-PA) in a canine model of electrically induced coronary thrombosis. BACKGROUND: Ongoing thrombin generation is considered an important component of the heightened thrombin activity associated with thrombolytic therapy and may be responsible for reperfusion failure and reocclusion. METHODS: Forty-two dogs with electrically induced coronary thrombus undergoing thrombolysis with t-PA (1 mg/kg over 20 min) were randomly assigned to one of the following adjunctive regimens: TAP (30 micrograms/kg body weight per min for 90 min, n = 10); TFPI (100 to 150 micrograms/kg per min for 90 min, n = 10); DEGR VIIa (1- to 2-mg/kg bolus, n = 10) and saline control (n = 12). The dogs were observed for 120 min after thrombolysis for reocclusion. RESULTS: All three active study agents accelerated the time to reperfusion by an average of 12 min (all p < 0.05). Duration of reflow was greatest with TAP (117 +/- 8 min, p < 0.05 compared with saline control), whereas DEGR VIIa and TFPI did not prolong the duration of reflow. Reocclusion rates were similar among control, DEGR VIIa and TFPI groups (70%, 78% and 67%, respectively). Tick anticoagulant peptide reduced the occurrence of reocclusion (0%, p < 0.05 compared with saline control). CONCLUSIONS: In this experimental model, during systematic blockade of various extrinsic coagulation pathway proteins, we demonstrated that whereas acceleration of thrombolysis occurs with factor VIIa-tissue factor complex inhibition, optimal enhancement of thrombolysis was achieved through specific factor Xa blockade.  相似文献

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning is a major clinical problem. The risk of morbidity and the most effective treatment have not been clearly established. We measured the incidence of delayed neurologic sequelae (DNS) in a group of patients acutely poisoned with CO and tested the null hypothesis that the incidence would not be affected by treatment with hyperbaric oxygen (HBO). DESIGN: We conducted a prospective, randomized study in patients with mild to moderate CO poisoning who presented within 6 hours. Patients had no history of loss of consciousness or cardiac instability. INTERVENTIONS: The incidence of DNS was compared between groups treated with ambient pressure 100% oxygen or HBO (2.8 ATA for 30 minutes followed by 2.0 ATA oxygen for 90 minutes). DNS were defined as development of new symptoms after oxygen treatment plus deterioration on one or more subtests of a standardized neuropsychologic screening battery. RESULTS: In 7 of 30 patients (23%), DNS developed after treatment with ambient-pressure oxygen, whereas no sequelae developed in 30 patients after HBO treatment (P < .05). DNS occurred 6 +/- 1 (mean +/- SE) days after poisoning and persisted 41 +/- 8 days. At follow-up 4 weeks after poisoning, patients who had been treated with ambient pressure oxygen and had not sustained DNS exhibited a worse mean score on one subtest, Trail Making, compared with the group treated with HBO and with a control group matched according to age and education level. There were no differences in scores between the control group and the hyperbaric oxygen group. CONCLUSION: DNS after CO poisoning cannot be predicted on the basis of a patient's clinical history or CO level. HBO treatment decreased the incidence of DNS after CO poisoning.  相似文献

Epidemiologic data on poisonings in Turkey are extremely limited. This is a retrospective chart review to describe the prevalence of poisoning in both adults and children, the presenting clinical features, morbidity and mortality to identify how poisoning in Izmir follows the pattern of other countries and how it is unique. Three hundred sixty-five poisoned patients presented to the Dokuz Eylül University Hospital, Ismir in 1989 to 1990. The distribution frequency of substances ingested reflects that of substances available in the home. Poisoning episodes in small children were most likely to involve hydrocarbons, analgesic, caustics or pesticides (55%). Ethanol, anticonvulsants, tricyclic antidepressants, and pesticides (55%). Ethanol, anticonvulsants, tricyclic antidepressants, and pesticides were the most common toxins seen in adults. A significant number of patients presented late in the course of their poisoning. Of those ingesting pharmaceuticals, mushrooms or plants, emesis, but no other modes of decontamination, was reported for 21%. Toxin "antidotes", gastrointestinal decontamination and enhanced drug removal techniques used in other parts of the world were rarely utilized. Nonetheless, only three patients (0.8%) died. This pilot study supports the need for a Regional Poison Information Center offering poison management advice to the general public as well as to members of the health care professions, the initiation of a public education campaign, and regional treatment by physicians trained in medical toxicology.  相似文献

Four dogs with thrombosis were referred for diagnostic testing and were subsequently treated by the use of streptokinase. The range of duration of clinical signs associated with thrombosis was 6 to 120 days. Causes of thrombosis were heart disease (1 dog), protein-losing nephropathy and hyperadrenocorticism (1), hyperadrenocorticism (1), and idiopathic (1). Possible factors that predisposed dogs to hypercoagulability included hypertension (2 dogs) and diabetes mellitus (1). All dogs were treated for underlying disease by use of supportive care. The first dog was treated with a loading dose of 250,000 U of streptokinase, i.v., with a subsequent maintenance dosage of 100,000 U/h, i.v., and also was treated with anticoagulant. The subsequent 3 dogs were treated with a loading dose of 90,000 U of streptokinase, i.v., and maintenance dosage of 45,000 U/ h, i.v., at various intervals. These dogs also were treated with anticoagulant. Three dogs had minor hemorrhage as an adverse effect to streptokinase infusion, but they did not require treatment for the hemorrhage. Complete resolution of the thrombus was observed in 3 dogs, and partial resolution of the thrombus was observed in the other dog. In all dogs, partial or complete resolution of clinical signs associated with thrombosis was seen. Streptokinase may be an effective treatment for dogs with thrombosis.  相似文献

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Arterioportal fistulas (APFs) are rare vascular disorders of the mesenteric circulation. The aim of this study was to determine the etiology, anatomical location, and main symptom at presentation of APFs, and analyze the various modes of treatment. METHODS: The etiology, clinical presentation, radiographs, and treatment of 12 patients with APFs are reported in detail, and another 76 cases published since 1980 are reviewed. RESULTS: APFs result from trauma (n = 25, 28%), iatrogenic procedures (n = 14, 16%), congenital vascular malformations (n = 13, 15%), tumor (n = 13, 15%), aneurysm (n = 12, 14%), and other causes (n = 11, 12%). The origin of APFs is the hepatic artery in the majority of patients (n = 56, 65%). The main symptoms at presentation are lower or upper gastrointestinal bleeding (n = 29, 33%), ascites (n = 23, 26%), heart failure (n = 4.5%), or diarrhea (n = 4.5%). Radiological intervention provides definitive treatment in 42% (n = 33) of patients, whereas the remainder are treated by surgery alone (n = 27, 31%) or a combination of radiological intervention and surgery (n = 8, 9%). CONCLUSIONS: APFs result in a protean syndrome variously combining portal hypertension and other hemodynamic imbalances (heart failure, intestinal ischemia). Single or multiple interventional radiological procedures using arterial and/or venous approaches allow definitive treatment of most APFs. With increasing technological advances, it is anticipated that surgery will only be indicated in rare instances after failure of radiological intervention(s).  相似文献

Previous surveillance in Barbados documented the absence of infection with Leptospira serogroup Canicola in dogs. The aim of this study was to survey the current state of canine leptospirosis in Barbados, 10 years after the last survey. Sera from 78 unwanted dogs scheduled for euthanasia and 61 dogs suspected of having acute leptospirosis were tested by microscopic agglutination (MAT) and by an ELISA method adapted for canine IgM and IgG antibodies. The seroprevalence in unwanted dogs was 62% (48/78), at an MAT titre of > or = 100. The majority of animals had low titres, suggestive of previous infection. Serogroup Autumnalis was the most common reactor (45%), followed by serogroups Icterohaemorrhagiae and Australis (each 16%) and Pomona (13%). Serogroup Ballum was uncommon in this group. The seroprevalence determined by MAT in acutely-ill dogs was 75% (46/61). The most common predominant serogroup was Icterohaemorrhagiae (36%) followed by serogroup Australis (13%), while serogroups Autumnalis and Ballum were also of little significance. Paired specimens were available from eight acutely-ill dogs. One animal was seronegative while five dogs showed evidence of seroconversion. An IgM-ELISA titre of > or = 320 was used to confirm current infection in eight of these nine animals. Previous studies in Barbados showed a higher prevalence of serogroup Icterohaemorrhagiae than of Autumnalis, but the relative frequency of these two serogroups may be changing. The high seroprevalence in dogs is of public health concern because the close contact between dogs and man may provide the link between a reservoir in the environment and susceptible humans.  相似文献

This study paper reports on two cases of poisoning with the organophosphorus insecticides, fenthion and omethoate. The two victims were admitted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) a few hours after ingestion of the two insecticides. They received appropriate treatment for organophosphorous poisoning (gastric lavage, activated charcoal, atropine and pralidoxime) and supportive care. Both patients survived. Organophosphate blood levels were determined on admission (fenthion 2.9 micrograms/ml, omethoate 1.6 micrograms/ml) and during the hospitalisation and proved to be considerably high. Slow elimination rate of the poison already distributed in the body was indicated for both pesticides. The patient with omethoate poisoning remained clinically well (Glasgow Coma Scale: 15) and was discharged three days later. The patient with fenthion poisoning, who had also ingested 30 mg of bromazepam and 720 mg of oxetoron, developed cholinergic crisis six hours after admission and was intubated for 24 days, with concomitant complications.  相似文献
