The starting materials of Al2O3, TiO2, ZrO2 and CeO2 nanoparticles were agglomerated into sprayable feedstock powders and plasma sprayed to form nanostructured coatings. There were net structures and fused structures in plasma sprayed nanostructured Al2O3–13 wt.%TiO2 coatings. The net structures were derived from partially melted feedstock powders and the fused structures were derived from fully melted feedstock powders. The nanostructured Al2O3–13 wt.%TiO2 coatings possessed higher hardness, bonding strength and crack growth resistance than conventional Metco 130 coatings which were mainly composed of lamellar fused structures. The higher toughness and strength of nanostructured Al2O3–13 wt.%TiO2 coatings were mainly related to the obtained net structures.  相似文献

An agglomerated Cr2O3/wt.%TiO2 powder has been fabricated by the spray drying process under different parameters. The spray-dried powder has well-agglomerated particles of spherical shape. In the conditions of the high slurry feed rate and low binder concentration in the slurry, the powder has large cavities inside some particles and ruggedness over their surface. The optimum plasma spray feed rate has been found by examining the spraying behavior of the powder and melted state of particles. The plasma spray coating has been performed under different process variables such as spraying distance and plasma power. These parameters strongly affect the characteristics of the coated layer: microstructure, hardness, and bond strength.  相似文献

Air plasma-sprayed conventional alumina-titania (Al2O3-13wt.%TiO2) coatings have been used for many years in the thermal spray industry for antiwear applications, mainly in the paper, printing, and textile industries. This work proposes an alternative to the traditional air plasma spraying of conventional aluminatitania by high-velocity oxyfuel (HVOF) spraying of nanostructured titania (TiO2). The microstructure, porosity, hardness (HV 300 g), crack propagation resistance, abrasion behavior (ASTM G65), and wear scar characteristics of these two types of coatings were analyzed and compared. The HVOF-sprayed nanostructured titania coating is nearly pore-free and exhibits higher wear resistance when compared with the air plasma-sprayed conventional alumina-titania coating. The nanozones in the nanostructured coating act as crack arresters, enhancing its toughness. By comparing the wear scar of both coatings (via SEM, stereoscope microscopy, and roughness measurements), it is observed that the wear scar of the HVOF-sprayed nanostructured titania is very smooth, indicating plastic deformation characteristics, whereas the wear scar of the air plasma-sprayed alumina-titania coating is very rough and fractured. This is considered to be an indication of a superior machinability of the nanostructured coating.  相似文献

Mechanical properties and wear rates of Al2O3-13 wt.% TiO2 (AT-13) and Al2O3-43 wt.% TiO2 (AT-43) coatings obtained by flame and atmospheric plasma spraying were studied. The feed stock was either ceramic cords or powders. Results show that the wear resistance of AT-13 coatings is higher than that of AT-43 and it seems that the effect of hardness on wear resistance is more important than that of toughness. Additionally, it was established that, according to conditions used to elaborate coatings and the sliding tribological test chosen, spray processes do not seem to have an important effect on the wear resistance of these coatings.  相似文献

Ni/Al2O3 composite coatings were prepared by a novel method from a modified Watt's type electrolyte containing nano-Al2O3 particles, where a high magnetic field was imposed in the direction parallel to an electrolytic current instead of mechanical agitation. Effects of magnetic field on the content of particles, surface morphology, microhardness and wear resistance of plating layer were investigated. It was found that the high magnetic field played an important role in the formation of composite coatings. The amounts of nano-Al2O3 particles in the composite coating increased with increasing of magnetic flux density and reached a maximum value at 8 T, then reduced slightly. The microhardness and wear resistance of the nanocomposite coatings also enhanced with increasing of magnetic flux density as compared to that of pure Ni coating fabricated in the absence of magnetic field. That was because the co-deposited nano-Al2O3 particles were uniformly distributed in the Ni matrix and contributed to greatly increase the microhardness and wear resistance of the composite coatings. Moreover, the mechanism of action of high magnetic field was discussed preliminarily.  相似文献

This paper reports a study of how the choice of plasma spray parameters, used during deposition of Al2O3-13%TiO2 coatings on carbon steel, influences the cavitation erosion properties of such coatings. The parameters studied are the power feeding rate and hydrogen flow rate. The surface and cross section of coatings before and after cavitation were also observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The phases present in the coatings were characterized by X-ray diffraction method (XRD). The microscopic observations were used to study the inter-lamellar connection, porosity, unmelted particles and so on inside the coating. We also measured the roughness, microhardness, adhesion strength and cavitation erosion of the coatings. The XRD results showed that the coating includes different allotropes of Al2O3 such as α and γ. The cavitation erosion studies of the coatings were conducted by ultrasonic cavitation testing on the basis of ASTM G32 standard. It was found that cavitation erosion is accelerated around the unmelted particles and porosities. The results reveal that the cavitation resistance of the coating is determined by its microstructure and that increasing discontinuities (inside the coating) reduce its cavitation resistance. We have found that the coating obtained at hydrogen gas flow rate of 16 L/min and powder feeding rate of 20 g/min has the best cavitation resistance.  相似文献

Yttria (Y2O3) has been commonly used as a protective coating material because it has strong resistance to plasma erosion with reducing the amount of reaction products generated during the semiconductor/LCD fabrication process. We have investigated the visual aspect of the plasma-sprayed Y2O3 coating both experimentally and numerically to propose the process conditions proper for white Y2O3 coating. It was demonstrated that heating of the particle surface in oxygen deficient plasma jet core resulted in the reduction of coating materials associated with the formation of black spots, while the re-oxidation of reduced feed stock materials at long spray distance, where they were exposed to relatively lower temperature of plasma and abundant oxygen, caused the whitening of coating. Based on the results, we proposed a spray coating condition proper for reducing the black spots formed in protective Y2O3 ceramic coating.  相似文献

In previous studies, it has been demonstrated that nanostructured Al2O3-13 wt.%TiO2 coatings deposited via air plasma spray (APS) exhibit higher wear resistance when compared to that of conventional coatings. This study aimed to verify if high-velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF)-sprayed Al2O3-13 wt.%TiO2 coatings produced using hybrid (nano + submicron) powders could improve even further the already recognized good wear properties of the APS nanostructured coatings. According to the abrasion test results (ASTM G 64), there was an improvement in wear performance by a factor of 8 for the HVOF-sprayed hybrid coating as compared to the best performing APS conventional coating. When comparing both hybrid and conventional HVOF-sprayed coatings, there was an improvement in wear performance by a factor of 4 when using the hybrid material. The results show a significant antiwear improvement provided by the hybrid material. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) at low/high magnifications showed the distinctive microstructure of the HVOF-sprayed hybrid coating, which helps to explain its excellent wear performance.

The thermal shock behavior of three kinds of Al2O3/13 wt%TiO2 coatings fabricated by plasma spraying was studied in this paper. One kind of those coatings was derived from conventional fused and crushed feedstock powder available commercially; the other two kinds of coatings were derived from nanostructured agglomerated feedstock powders. These two nano coatings possess moderate pores and pre-existing microcracks, they were composed of fused structure and three-dimensional net or skeleton-like structure. For conventional coatings, the pores and pre-existing cracks were bigger, sharp-point and mostly distributed between splats. Thermal shock tests for the three coatings were performed by water quenching method. Testing result showed the two kinds of nano coatings had much higher thermal shock resistance than the conventional coatings. The improved thermal shock resistance for nano coatings could attribute to their improved microstructure and crack propagation mode. The damage evolution and failure mechanism of coatings was quite different at thermal shock temperature of 650 °C and 850 °C, which was explained by a simple model. Different crack propagating modes in nanostructured and conventional coatings during thermal shock tests were due to their different microstructures in these two kinds coatings. The stress state of coating surfaces during the thermal cycles was also discussed in this paper.  相似文献

The detonation spraying is one of the most promising thermal spray variants for depositing wear and corrosion resistant coatings. The ceramic (Al2O3), metallic (Ni-20 wt%Cr) , and cermets (WC-12 wt%Co) powders that are commercially available were separated into coarser and finer size ranges with relatively narrow size distribution by employing centrifugal air classifier. The coatings were deposited using detonation spray technique. The effect of particle size and its distribution on the coating properties were examined. The surface roughness and porosity increased with increasing powder particle size for all the coatings consistently. The feedstock size was also found to influence the phase composition of Al2O3 and WC-Co coatings; however does not influence the phase composition of Ni-Cr coatings. The associated phase change and %porosity of the coatings imparted considerable variation in the coating hardness, fracture toughness, and wear properties. The fine and narrow size range WC-Co coating exhibited superior wear resistance. The coarse and narrow size distribution Al2O3 coating exhibited better performance under abrasion and sliding wear modes however under erosion wear mode the as-received Al2O3 coating exhibited better performance. In the case of metallic (Ni-Cr) coatings, the coatings deposited using coarser powder exhibited marginally lower-wear rate under abrasion and sliding wear modes. However, under erosion wear mode, the coating deposited using finer particle size exhibited considerably lower-wear rate.  相似文献

Al2O3-13%TiO2 coatings were deposited on stainless steel substrates from conventional and nanostructured powders using atmospheric plasma spraying (APS). A complete characterization of the feedstock confirmed its nanostructured nature. Coating microstructures and phase compositions were characterized using SEM, TEM, and XRD techniques. The microstructure comprised two clearly differentiated regions. One region, completely fused, consisted mainly of nanometer-sized grains of γ-Al2O3 with dissolved Ti+4. The other region, partly fused, retained the microstructure of the starting powder and was principally made up of submicrometer-sized grains of α-Al2O3, as confirmed by TEM. Coating microhardness as well as tribological behavior were determined. Vickers microhardness values of conventional coatings were in average slightly lower than the values for nanostructured coating. The wear resistance of conventional coatings was shown to be lower than that of nanostructured coatings as a consequence of Ti segregation. A correlation between the final properties, the coating microstructure, and the feedstock characteristics is given.

Mechanical properties such as Young’s moduli and fracture toughness of plasma-sprayed Cr3C2-NiCr, WC-Co and Cr2O3 coatings were measured. The tribological properties of the three kinds of coatings were investigated with a block-on-ring self-mated arrangement under water-lubricated sliding. Furthermore, the influences of the mechanical properties on the tribological properties of the coatings were also examined. It was found that the Young’s moduli, bend strengths and fracture toughness of the coatings were lower than the corresponding bulk materials, which may be attributed to the existence of pores and microcracks in the coatings. Among the three kinds of coatings, the magnitude of wear coefficients, in decreasing order, is Cr3C2-NiCr, WC-Co and Cr2O3, and the wear coefficient of Cr2O3 coating was less than 1 × 10−6mm3N−1m−1. The wear mechanisms of the coatings were explained in terms of microcracking and fracturing, and water deteriorated wear performance of the coatings. The higher the fracture toughness and the lower the porosity and length of microcracking of the coating, the more the wear-resistance of the coating.  相似文献

Pure Al and 6061 aluminium alloy based Al2O3 particle-reinforced composite coatings were produced on AZ91E substrates using cold spray. The strength of the coating/substrate interface in tension was found to be stronger than the coating itself. The coatings have corrosion resistance similar to that of bulk pure aluminium in both salt spray and electrochemical tests. The wear resistance of the coatings is significantly better than that of the AZ91 Mg substrate, but the significant result is that the wear rate of the coatings is several decades lower than that of various bulk Al alloys tested for comparison. The effect of post-spray heat treatment, the volume fraction of Al2O3 within the coating and of the type of Al powder used in the coatings on the corrosion and wear resistance was also discussed.  相似文献

Nano-sized Al2O3 ceramic particles (50 nm) were co-deposited with nickel using electrodeposition technique to develop composite coatings. The coatings were produced in an aqueous nickel bath at different current densities and the research investigated the effect of applied current on microstructure and thickness of the coatings. The variation in some mechanical properties such as hardness, wear resistance, and the adhesive strength of the composite coatings is influenced by the applied current and this was also studied. The morphology of the coatings was characterized by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The hardness, wear resistance, and bond strength of the coatings were evaluated by Vickers micro-hardness test, pin-on-disc test, and tensile test, respectively. Results showed that the Al2O3 particles were uniformly distributed in the coatings, and the coatings deposited at a current density of 0.01 A/cm2 was most favorable in achieving a maximum current efficiency which causes the co-deposition of a maximum amount of Al2O3 particles (4.3 wt.%) in the coatings. The increase in Al2O3 particles in the coatings increased the mechanical properties of the Ni-Al2O3 composite coatings by grain refining and dispersion strengthening mechanisms.  相似文献

Graphite is one of the candidate materials proposed for application in pyrochemical reprocessing plants involving aggressive molten chloride environment. Post treatments are promising techniques for the improvement of properties of thermal spray coatings for different industrial applications. In the present work, the effect of post treatments like vacuum annealing (VA) and laser melting (LM) on the microstructure and chemical modification of plasma sprayed Al2O3-40 wt.% TiO2 coatings over high density (HD) graphite substrates has been investigated. When compared with sprayed coatings (SC), VA coatings showed cluster morphology and LM coatings exhibited homogenous microstructure. On laser melted surfaces networks of cracks were observed. XRD studies showed that the metastable γ-Al2O3 phase present in the SC is transformed to stable α-Al2O3 after post treatments. In LM coatings Al2TiO5 phase was more predominant in contrast to SC and VA coatings. The microhardness enhancement was observed in case of LM coating compared to the VA and SC. Due to elimination of coating defects in LM samples, there is a considerable reduction in the surface roughness.  相似文献

The effects of La2O3 and HfO2 addition on thermal conductivity and thermal cycle life of EB-PVD YSZ coatings were investigated. La2O3 and HfO2 were selected as additives, because they significantly suppress the sintering of YSZ. The developed coating showed low thermal conductivity as well as high resistance to sintering. Burner rig tests confirmed that the developed coating have a superior thermal insulating effect and have a longer life than that of a coating with conventional composition.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This work describes the influence of standoff distance (SoD), and gas temperature on the morphology and corrosion resistance of Al-10%Al2O3 coatings deposited by cold gas spray (CGS) on carbon steel. The results showed that the standoff distance had little effect on the thickness and microstructure of the coating. However, a 100 °C decrease of the spraying temperature reduced the coating thickness by 300?µm. The use of electrochemical analyses and SEM images showed that all the coatings studied were able to protect the substrate during at least 1300?h of immersion, due to the dense microstructure obtained by CGS.  相似文献
