In this paper, energy and exergy analyses for a 1.2 kWp Nexa PEM fuel cell unit in a solar-based hydrogen production system is undertaken to investigate the performance of the system for different operating conditions using experimental setup and thermodynamic model. From the model results, it is found that there are reductions in energy and exergy efficiencies (about 14%) with increase in current density. These are consistent with the experimental data for the same operating conditions. A parametric study on the system and its parameters is undertaken to investigate the changes in the efficiencies for variations in temperature, pressure and anode stoichiometry. The energy and exergy efficiencies increase with pressure by 23% and 15%, respectively. No noticeable changes are observed in energy and exergy efficiencies with increase in temperature. The energy and exergy efficiencies decrease with increase in anode stoichiometry by 17% and 14%, respectively. These observations are reported for the given range of current density as 0.047–0.4 A/cm2. The results and analyses show that the PEM fuel-cell system has lower exergy efficiencies than the corresponding energy efficiencies due to the irreversibilities that are not considered by energy analysis. In comparison with experimental data, the model is accurate in predicting the performance of the proposed fuel-cell system. The parametric and multivariable analyses show that the option of selecting appropriate set of conditions plays a significant role in improving performance of existing fuel-cell systems.  相似文献

In this paper, a mathematical model is developed to study the performance of a polymer membrane electrolyser (PEM) and the effect of different parameters including operating temperature, cathode pressure, membrane thickness, the width and height of channel and current density on the performance and energy and exergy efficiency of PEM electrolyser are investigated. In addition to the resistance overvoltage of components, the concentration overvoltage is modeled using an accurate equation. The model is validated against experimental data. The results indicate that by increasing current density, the voltage of the electrolyser increases, and energy and exergy efficiencies reduce. Increase of temperature from 313 K to 353 K, and decrease of cathode pressure from 40 bar to 1 bar lead to decrease of voltage of the PEM electrolyser by 8.3% and 4.8%, respectively. Moreover, energy and exergy efficiencies increase between 2% and 6% in the range of working temperature and pressure. It is concluded that decrease of membrane thickness, height and width of channel, and increase of exchange current density of the anode and cathode electrodes lead to decrease of voltage of the electrolyser and increase of energy and exergy efficiencies. However, the effect of temperature and cathode pressure and the exchange current densities is greater than the effect of geometric parameters.  相似文献

In this paper we investigate the effects of thermodynamic irreversibilities on the exergetic performance of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells as a function of cell operating temperature, pressures of anode and cathode, current density, and membrane thickness. The practical operating conditions are selected to be 3–5 atm for anode and cathode pressures, and 323–353 K for the cell temperatures, respectively. In addition, the membrane thicknesses are chosen as 0.016, 0.018 and 0.02 cm, respectively. Moreover, the current density range of the PEM fuel cell is selected to be 0.01–2.0 A cm?2. It is concluded that exergy efficiency of PEM fuel cell decreases with a rise in membrane thickness and current density, and increases with a rise of cell operating pressure and with a decrease of current density for the same membrane thickness. Thus, it can be said that, in order to increase the exergetic performance of PEM fuel cell, the lower membrane thickness, the lower current density and the higher cell operating pressure should be selected in case PEM fuel cell is operated at constant cell temperature. In this study, a comprehensive performance analysis of a transportation system powered by a PEM fuel cell engine system is conducted thermodynamically both through energy and exergy approaches. This system includes system components such as a compressor, humidifiers, pressure regulator, cooling system and the fuel cell stack. The polarization curves are studied in the modeling and compared with the actual data taken from the literature works before proceeding to the performance modeling. The system performance is investigated through parametric studies on energy, exergy and work output values by changing operating temperature, operating pressure, membrane thickness, anode stoichiometry, cathode stoichiometry, humidity, reference temperature and reference pressure. The results show that the exergy efficiency increases with increase of temperature from 323 to 353 K by about 8%, pressure from 2.5 to 4 atm by about 5%, humidity from 97% to 80% by about 10%, and reference state temperature from 253 to 323 K by about 3%, respectively. In addition, the exergy efficiency increases with decrease of membrane thickness from 0.02 to 0.005 mm by about 9%, anode stoichiometry from 3 to 1.1 by about 1%, and cathode stoichiometry from 3 to 1.1 by about 35% respectively.  相似文献

Proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells operated with hydrogen and air offer promising alternative to conventional fossil fuel sources for transport and stationary applications because of its high efficiency, low‐temperature operation, high power density, fast start‐up and potable power for mobile application. Power levels derivable from this class of fuel cell depend on the operating parameters. In this study, a three‐dimensional numerical optimisation of the effect of operating and design parameters of PEM fuel cell performance was developed. The model computational domain includes an anode flow channel, membrane electrode assembly and a cathode flow channel. The continuity, momentum, energy and species conservation equations describing the flow and species transport of the gas mixture in the coupled gas channels and the electrodes were numerically solved using a computational fluid dynamics code. The effects of several key parameters, including channel geometries (width and depth), flow orientation and gas diffusion layer (GDL) porosity on performance and species distribution in a typical fuel cell system have been studied. Numerical results of the effect of flow rate and GDL porosity on the flow channel optimal configurations for PEM fuel cell are reported. Simulations were carried out ranging from 0.6 to 1.6 mm for channel width, 0.5 to 3.0 mm for channel depth and 0.1 to 0.7 for the GDL porosity. Results were evaluated at 0.3 V operating cell voltage of the PEM fuel cell. The optimisation results show that the optimum dimension values for channel depth and channel width are 2.0 and 1.2 mm, respectively. In addition, the results indicate that effective design of fuel gas channel in combination with the reactant species flow rate and GDL porosity enhances the performance of the fuel cell. The numerical results computed agree well with experimental data in the literature. Consequently, the results obtained provide useful information for improving the design of fuel cells. In this study, we deal with the exergoeconomic analysis of a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell power system for transportation applications. The PEM fuel cell performance model, that is the polarization curve, is previously developed by one of the authors by using the some derived and developed equations in literature. The exergoeconomic analysis includes the PEM fuel cell stack and system components as compressor, humidifiers, pressure regulator and the cooling system. A parametric study is also conducted to investigate the system performance and cost behaviour of the components, depending on the operating temperature, operating pressure, membrane thickness, anode stoichiometry and cathode stoichiometry. For the system performance, energy and exergy efficiencies and power output are investigated in detail. It is found that with an increase of temperature and pressure and a decrease of membrane thickness the system efficiency increases which leads to a decrease in the overall production cost. The minimization of the production costs is very crucial in commercialization of the fuel cells in transportation sector.  相似文献

A one-dimensional, steady-state and isothermal model for a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell has been developed to investigate the effects of various parameters such as the molar fraction of nitrogen gas, relative humidity, temperature, pressure, membrane thickness, anode and cathode stoichiometric flow ratio and the distribution of oxygen in the cathode catalyst while water transfer in membrane is produced by diffusion, pressure gradient and electro-osmotic drag. The most critical problems to overcome in the proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell technology are the water and thermal management. The results show that the cell performance increases as operating pressure and temperature are increased. The performance of cell can decrease by decreasing the relative humidity of inlet gases and increasing the membrane thickness. Increasing the anode and cathode stoichiometric flow ratio can also improve the cell performance. As the oxygen concentration becomes zero in about 8 percent depth of cathode catalyst layer, the thickness of cathode catalyst layer can be reduced 92 percent without any potential loss in output voltage. The cathode activation loss also becomes high by increasing the molar fraction of nitrogen gas. The modeling results agree very well with experimental results.  相似文献

Sulfonic acid modified perfluorocarbon polymer proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells operated at elevated temperatures (120–150 °C) can greatly alleviate CO poisoning on anode catalysts. However, fuel cells with these PEMs operated at elevated temperature and atmospheric pressure typically experience low relative humidity (RH) and thus have increased membrane and electrode resistance. To operate PEM fuel cells at elevated temperature and high RH, work is needed to pressurize the anode and cathode reactant gases, thereby decreasing the efficiency of the PEM fuel cell system. A liquid-fed hydrocarbon-fuel processor can produce reformed gas at high pressure and high relative humidity without gas compression. If the anode is fed with this high-pressure, high-relative humidity stream, the water in the anode compartment will transport through the membrane and into the ambient pressure cathode structure, decreasing the cell resistance. This work studied the effect of anode pressurization on the cell resistance and performance using an ambient pressure cathode. The results show that high RH from anode pressurization at both 120 and 150 °C can decrease the membrane resistance and therefore increase the cell voltage. A cell running at 150 °C obtains a cell voltage of 0.43 V at 400 mA cm−2 even with 1% CO in H2. The results presented here provide a concept for the application of a coupled steam reformer and PEM fuel cell system that can operate at 150 °C with reformate and an atmospheric air cathode.  相似文献

This study deals with the thermodynamic analysis of molten carbonate fuel cell combined with a gas turbine, based on the first- and second-law of thermodynamics. The mass, energy, entropy and exergy balance equations are written and applied to the system and its components. Some parametric studies are performed to investigate the change of system performance through energy and exergy efficiencies with the change of operating conditions. The irreversibilities occuring in different devices of the integrated system are also investigated through the exergy destruction analysis in these devices. The maximum output work of the MCFC is estimated to be 314.3 kW for an operating temperature of 650 °C. The overall energy and exergy efficiencies achieved for this system are 42.89% and 37.75%, respectively.  相似文献

In this paper, a finite volume numerical method is developed to investigate a high temperature polymer exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer cell using a three-dimensional and non-isothermal model. The results that are obtained for the single cell are generalized to a full stack of electrolyzer and an exergoeconomic analysis is performed based on the numerical data. The effects of operating temperature, the pressure of cathode, gas diffusion layer (GDL) thickness, and membrane thickness on the energy and exergy efficiencies and exergy cost of the electrolyzer are examined. This study reveals that by increasing the working temperature from 363 K to 393 K, the exergy cost of hydrogen decreases from 23.16 $/GJ to 22.39 $/GJ, and the exergy efficiency of PEM electrolyzer stack at current density of 10,000 A/m2 increases from 0.56 to 0.59. The results indicate that increase of pressure deteriorates the system performance at voltages below 1.4 V. It is concluded that operation of the electrolyzer at higher pressures results in decrease of the exergy cost of hydrogen. Increase of membrane thickness from 50 μm to 183 μm leads to increase of the exergy cost of hydrogen from 23.24 $/GJ to 35.99 $/GJ.  相似文献

The design of a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell system is important for the optimization of the function of supporting parameters in the fuel cell. The water balance in a PEM fuel cell is investigated based on the water transport phenomena. In this investigation, the diffusion of water from the cathode side to the anode side of the cell is observed to not occur at 20% relative humidity at the cathode (RHC) and 58% relative humidity at the anode (RHA). The minimum concentration of condensed water at the cathode side is observed at a cathode gas inlet relative humidity of 40% RHC–92% RHC and at temperatures between 343 K and 363 K. RHC operating conditions that are greater than 90% and at a temperature of 363 K increased the concentration of condensed water and occurred quickly, which result in a water balance that became difficult to control. On the anode side, the condensation of water is observed at operating temperatures of 353 K and 363 K.  相似文献

This study is basically composed of two sections. In the first section, a CFD analysis is used to provide a better insight to molten carbonate fuel cell operation and performance characteristics at very high current densities. Therefore, a mathematical model is developed by employing mass and momentum conservation, electrochemical reaction mechanisms and electric charges. The model results are then compared with the available data for an MCFC unit, and a good agreement is observed. In addition, the model is applied to predict the unit cell behaviour at various operating pressures, temperatures, and cathode gas stoichiometric ratios. In the second section, a thermodynamic model is utilized to examine energy efficiency, exergy efficiency and entropy generation of the MCFC. At low current densities, no considerable difference in output voltage and power is observed; however, for greater values of current densities, the difference is not negligible. If the molten carbonate fuel cell is to operate at current densities smaller than 2500 A m−2, there is no point to pressurize the system. If the fuel cell operates at pressures greater than atmospheric pressure, the unit cell cost could be minimized. In addition, various partial pressure ratios at the cathode side demonstrated nearly the same effect on the performance of the fuel cell. With a 60 K change in operating temperature, almost 10% improvement in energy and exergy efficiencies is obtained. Both efficiencies initially increase at lower current densities and then reach their maximum values and ultimately decrease with the increase of current density. By elevating the pressure, both energy and exergy efficiencies of the cell enhance. In addition, higher operating pressure and temperature decrease the unit cell entropy generation.  相似文献

This study deals with the energy and exergy analysis of a molten carbonate fuel cell hybrid system to determine the efficiencies, irreversibilities and performance of the system. The analysis includes the operation of each component of the system by mass, energy and exergy balance equations. A parametric study is performed to examine the effect of varying operating pressure, temperature and current density on the performance of the system. Furthermore, thermodynamic irreversibilities in each component of the system are determined. An overall energy efficiency of 57.4%, exergy efficiency of 56.2%, bottoming cycle energy efficiency of 24.7% and stack energy efficiency of 43.4% are achieved. The results demonstrate that increasing the stack pressure decreases the overpotential losses and, therefore, increases the stack efficiency. However, this increase is limited by the remaining operating conditions and the material selection of the stack. The fuel cell and the other components in which chemical reactions occur, show the highest exergy destruction in this system. The compressor and turbine on the other hand, have the lowest entropy generation and, thus, the lowest exergy destruction.  相似文献

The performance of a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell is greatly affected by the operating parameters. Appropriate operating parameters are necessary for PEM fuel cells to maintain stable performance. A three-dimensional multi-phase fuel cell model (FCM) is developed to predict the effects of operating parameters (e.g. operating pressure, fuel cell temperature, relative humidity of reactant gases, and air stoichiometric ratio) on the performance of PEM fuel cells. The model presented in this paper is a typical nine-layer FCM that consists of current collectors, flow channels, gas diffusion layers, catalysts layers at the anode and the cathode as well as the membrane. A commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software package Fluent is used to solve this predictive model through SIMPLE algorithm and the modeling results are illustrated via polarization curves including I–V and I–P curves. The results indicate that the cell performance can be enhanced by increasing operating pressure and operating temperature. The anode humidification has more significant influences on the cell performance than the cathode humidification, and the best performance occurs at moderate air relative humidity while the hydrogen is fully humidified. In addition, the cell performance proves to be improved with the increase of air stoichiometric ratio. Based on these conclusions, several suggestions for engineering practice are also provided.  相似文献

This paper describes a lumped dynamic model for a high pressure PEM water electrolyzer. Since the electrolyzer under analysis is characterized by unbalanced pressure configuration with high cathodic working pressure, the model focuses on the cathode side to adequately predict the electrolyzer performance, analyzing and highlighting the importance of the cathodic activation overpotential term. The model is calibrated using experimental data from a 5.6 kW PEM water electrolyzer stack. A very good fit can be observed between the model and the experimental data, not only at different temperatures, but also at different pressures. It is found that the rise of temperature affects mainly the ohmic overpotential, while increasing the cathode pressure leads to an increment in the cathode activation overpotential that is not negligible for the electrolyzer performance. By rising the operating current, the cathode activation overpotential becomes 63% of that of the anode (at 70 bar, 1.2 A/cm2 and 50 °C).  相似文献

In this investigation, water in a single-cell proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell was managed using saturated hydrogen and dry air. The experiment was conducted at temperatures of 40, 50 and 60 °C and pressures of 1 and 1.5 bar at both the anode and cathode gas inlets. The feed velocities of hydrogen and air were fixed at 3 and 6 L min−1, respectively. After reaching steady-state conditions, the relative humidity along the single serpentine gas channel was measured. From the experimental data, water transport properties were characterized based on a membrane hydration model. The electro-osmotic drag coefficient, water diffusion coefficient, membrane ionic conductivity and water back-diffusion flux were significantly influenced by the water content in the membrane of the PEM fuel cell. The water content depended on the relative humidity profile along the gas channel. In this investigation, a negative value for the water back-diffusion flux was measured; thus, the transport of water from the cathode to the anode did not occur. This phenomenon was due to the large water concentration gradient between the anode and cathode. Therefore, this strategy successfully prevented flooding in the PEM fuel cell.  相似文献

In this study, experimental methods are used to study the effect of assembly torque and channel size on cold start performance. Through the analysis of pressure distribution, fuel cell voltage, cathode gas inlet and outlet pressure drop and high frequency impedance, it is considered that, under the experimental conditions of this study, the fuel cell assembly torque is 2 N m, which has better cold start performance than the assembly torque of 1 N m and 4 N m. In addition, Under the condition of 2 N m assembly torque, the effect of four different flow channel sizes on the pressure distribution and cold start performance of the fuel cell was studied. It is found that when the width of channel is 0.5 mm, the depth of channel is 0.3 mm, the cold start performance is best.  相似文献

In this study, energy and exergy analyses of a 1 kW Horizon H-1000 XP Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) Fuel Cell has been investigated. A testing apparatus has been established to analyze the system efficiencies based on the first and second laws of thermodynamics. In this mechanism pure hydrogen has been directly used as a fuel in compressed gas formation. Purity of hydrogen was above 99.99%. The system performance was investigated through experimental studies on energy and parametric studies on exergy by changing the operating pressure and operation temperature. The results showed that the energy efficiency of PEM fuel cell is 45.58% for experimental study and 41.27% for parametric study at full load. Also, 2.25% and 4.2% performance improvements were obtained by changing the operating temperature ratio (T/T0) from 1 to 1.2 and operating pressure ratio (P/P0) from 1 to 2, respectively.  相似文献

The existing flow channels like parallel and gird channels have been modified for better fuel distribution in order to boost the performance of direct methanol fuel cell. The main objective of the work is to achieve minimized pressure drop in the flow channel, uniform distribution of methanol, reduced water accumulation, and better oxygen supply. A 3D mathematical model with serpentine channel is simulated for the cell temperature of 80 °C, 0.5 M methanol concentration. The study resulted in 40 mW/cm2 of power density and 190 mA/cm2 of current density at the operating voltage of 0.25 V. Further, the numerical study is carried out for modified flow channels to discuss their merits and demerits on anode and cathode side. The anode serpentine channel is unmatched by the modified zigzag and pin channels by ensuring the better methanol distribution under the ribs and increased the fuel consumption. But the cathode serpentine channel is lacking in water management. The modified channels at anode offered reduced pressure drop, still uniform reactant distribution is found impossible. The modified channels at cathode outperform the serpentine channel by reducing the effect of water accumulation, and uniform oxygen supply. So the serpentine channel is retained for methanol supply, and modified channel is chosen for cathode reactant supply. In comparison to cell with only serpentine channel, the serpentine anode channel combined with cathode zigzag and pin channel enhanced power density by 17.8% and 10.2% respectively. The results revealed that the zigzag and pin channel are very effective in mitigating water accumulation and ensuring better oxygen supply at the cathode.  相似文献

A three-dimensional, two-phase, multi-component model is used to investigate the effects of channel assembled angle on the performance of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell, including distribution of current density, membrane water content and local temperature. The flow-fields are assembled by single serpentine channels in anode and cathode with intersection angles of 0°, 90°, 180° and 270°, respectively. At high inlet humidity condition each flow-field has its owned strengths. Flow-fields with channel assembled angles of 0°, 90° and 270° show most uniform membrane water content, current density and local temperature distributions, respectively. However, at low inlet humidity condition, flow-field with channel assembled angle of 90° represents highest performance and uniformities in all aspects. Flow-field design for PEM fuel cell should take into account the effects of channel assembled angle on cell performance.  相似文献
