The gas diffusion layer (GDL) is composed of a substrate and a micro-porous layer (MPL), and is treated with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) to promote water discharge. Additionally, the MPL mainly consists of carbon black and PTFE. In other words, the optimal design of these elements has a dominant effect on the polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) performance. For the GDL, it is crucial to prevent water flooding, and the water flux within the GDL is strongly affected by the capillary pressure gradient. In this study, the PEMFC performance was systematically investigated by varying the substrate PTFE content, MPL PTFE content, and MPL carbon loading per unit area. The effects of each experimental variable on the PEMFC performance and especially on the capillary pressure gradient were quantitatively analyzed when the GDLs were manufactured by the doctor blade manufacturing method. The experimental results indicated that as the PTFE content of the anode and cathode GDL increased, the PEMFC performance deteriorated due to the deformation of the porosity and tortuosity of the GDL. Additionally, the PEMFC performance improved as the MPL PTFE content of the cathode GDL increased at low relative humidity (RH), but the PEMFC performance tendency was reversed at high RH. Further, the MPL carbon loading of 2 mg/cm2 demonstrated the best performance, and the advantages and disadvantages of the MPL carbon loading were identified. In addition, the effects of each experimental variable on liquid water, water vapor, and gas permeability were investigated.  相似文献

A carbon nanofiber sheet (CNFS) has been prepared by electrospinning, stabilisation and subsequent carbonisation processes. Imaging with scanning electron microscope (SEM) indicates that the CNFS is formed by nonwoven nanofibers with diameters between 400 and 700 nm. The CNFS, with its three-dimensional pores, shows excellent electrical conductivity and hydrophobicity. In addition, it is found that the CNFS can be successfully applied as a micro-porous layer (MPL) in the cathode gas diffusion layer (GDL) of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). The GDL with the CNFS as a MPL has higher gas permeability than a conventional GDL. Moreover, the resultant cathode GDL exhibits excellent fuel cell performance with a higher peak power density than that of a cathode GDL fabricated with a conventional MPL under the same test condition.  相似文献

A new method of preparing microporous layer (MPL) for proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) was presented in this paper. Considering the bad dispersion of PTFE aqueous suspension in the carbon slurry based on ethanol, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) aqueous solution was used to prepare carbon slurry for microporous layer. The prepared gas diffusion layers (GDLs) were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, contact angle system and pore size distribution analyzer. It was found that the GDL prepared with PVP aqueous solution had higher gas permeability, as well as more homogeneous hydrophobicity. Moreover, the prepared GDLs were used in the cathode of fuel cell and evaluated with fuel cell performance and EIS analysis, and the GDL prepared with PVP aqueous solution indicated better fuel cell performance and lower ohmic resistance and mass transfer resistance.  相似文献

The optimal design of the cathode gas diffusion layer (GDL) for direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) is not only to attain better cell performance, but also to achieve better water management for the DMFC system. In this work, the effects of both the PTFE loading in the cathode backing layer (BL) as well as in the micro-porous layer (MPL) and the carbon loading in the MPL on both water transport and cell performance were investigated experimentally. The experimental data showed that with the presence of a hydrophobic MPL in the GDL, the water-crossover flux through the membrane decreased slightly with increasing the PTFE loading in the BL. However, a higher PTFE loading in the BL not only lowered cell performance, but also resulted in an unstable discharging process. It was also found that the PTFE loading in the MPL had little effect on the water-crossover flux, but its effect on cell performance was substantial: the 40-wt% PTFE loading in the MPL was found to be the optimal value to achieve the best performance. The experimental results further showed that increasing the carbon loading in the MPL significantly lowered the water-crossover flux, but a too high carbon loading would decrease the cell performance as the result of the increased oxygen transport resistance; the 2.0-mg C cm−2 carbon loading was found to exhibit the best performance.  相似文献

Composite film of carbon nanotube (CNT) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) was successfully formed by using their dispersion fluids. This CNT/PTFE composite film was electrically conductive in the range of 10 S cm−1. The proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) was assembled with the stainless steel bipolar plate coated with the CNT/PTFE composite film. This coating decreased the contact resistance between the surface of the bipolar plate and the membrane electrode assemble (MEA). Therefore, the output power of the fuel cell increased by 1.6 times.  相似文献

Water management remains a significant challenge for the Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) with respect to performance, lifetime and operational flexibility. In recent years, microporous layers (MPL) have been widely used on the cathode side of the PEMFC in order to improve fuel cell performance and water management capabilities. Many modeling and experimental studies have with limited success attempted to analyze the underlying mechanisms that are responsible for the performance improvement due to the MPL. In this study, porous inserts along with various in-situ experimental techniques are used to investigate the MPLs. It was observed that the anode pressure drop increased when a cathode MPL was present, indicating water cross-over from the cathode towards the anode side. Further testing identified that the MPL improved cell performance due to the reduction of water saturation in the cathode catalyst layer, which resulted in enhanced oxygen diffusion. The influence of the MPL on the anode side was also studied with the aid of porous inserts and other techniques, and it was observed that the anode MPL improves cell voltage stability and reduces water accumulation in the anode catalyst layer. The present investigation provides further important information on the critical role of the MPL in the PEMFC.  相似文献

The thermal conductivity and the thickness change with pressure of several different micro porous layers (MPL) used for the polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) were measured. The MPL were made with different compositions of carbon and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). A one-dimensional thermal PEMFC model was used to estimate the impact that the MPL has on the temperature profiles though the PEMFC.  相似文献

This research investigates the optimal polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) content in the cathode gas diffusion layer (GDL) by evaluating the effect of compression on the performance of a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell. A special test fixture is designed to control the compression ratio, and thus the effect of compression on cell performance can be measured in situ. GDLs with and without a microporous layer (MPL) coating are considered. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is used to diagnose the variations in ohmic resistance, charge transfer resistance and mass transport resistance with compression ratio. The results show that the optimal PTFE content, at which the maximum peak power density occurs, is about 5 wt% with a compression ratio of 30% for a GDL without an MPL coating. For a GDL with an MPL coating, the optimal PTFE content in the MPL is found to be 30% at a compression ratio of 30%.  相似文献

The microporous layer (MPL) as a part of diffusion medium has an important impact on mass transfer of proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). In this study, MPLs of gas diffusion layers (GDLs) are prepared with different carbon blacks, and the properties of carbon blacks and their effects as MPLs on cell performance are systematically investigated. The results show that the GDL prepared by Acetylene Black (ACET) exhibits the best performance with a maximum power density up to 2.05 W cm−2. Moreover, it still maintains extremely high performance with increasing current density even at humidity condition of 100% relative humidity, which means its excellent water/gas transportation capacity. This study contributes to deeply understanding the correlations between the properties of MPL material itself and their corresponding performance exhibited in cell. It also provides an important reference for enhancing cell performance and further advancing the practical applications of MPLs in PEMFC field.  相似文献

This work is to study the effect of properties of gas diffusion layer (GDL) on performance in a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) by both numerical simulation and experiments. The 1-dimension numerical simulation using the mixture-phase model is developed to calculate polarization curve. We are able to estimate optimum GDL properties for cell performance from numerical simulation results. Various GDLs which have different properties are prepared to verify accuracy of the simulation results. The contact angle and gas permeability of GDLs are controlled by polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) content in micro-porous layers (MPLs). MPL slurry is prepared by homogeneous blending of carbon powder, PTFE suspension, isopropyl alcohol and glycerol. Then the slurry is coated on gas diffusion mediums (GDMs) surface with controlled thickness by blade coating method. Non-woven carbon papers which have different thicknesses of 200 μm and 380 μm are used as GDMs. The prepared GDLs are measured by surface morphology, contact angle, gas permeability and through-plane electrical resistance. Moreover, the GDLs are tested in a 25 cm2 single cell at 70 °C in humidified H2/air condition. The contact angle of GDL increases with increasing PTFE content in MPL. However, the gas permeability and through-plane electrical conductivity decrease with increasing PTFE content and thickness of GDM. These changes in properties of GDL greatly influence the cell performance. As a result, the best performance is obtained by GDL consists of 200 μm thick non-woven carbon paper as GDM and MPL contained 20 wt.% PTFE content.  相似文献

Understanding the icing characteristics of proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) is essential for optimizing their cold-start performance. This study examined the effects of start-up temperature, current density, and microporous layer (MPL) hydrophobicity on the cold-start performance and icing characteristics of PEMFCs. Further, the cold-start icing characteristics of PEMFCs were studied by testing the PEMFC output voltage, impedance, and temperature changes at different positions of the cathode gas diffusion layer. Observation of the MPL surface after cold-start failure allowed determination of the distribution of ice formation at the catalytic layer/MPL interface. At fuel cell temperatures below 0 °C, supercooled water in the cell was more likely to undergo concentrated instantaneous freezing at higher temperatures (−4 and −5 °C), whereas the cathode tended to freeze in sequence at lower temperatures (−8 °C). In addition, a more hydrophobic MPL resulted in two successive instantaneous icing phenomena in the fuel cell and improved the cold-start performance.  相似文献

Reducing methanol crossover from the anode to cathode in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) is critical for attaining high cell performance and fuel utilization, particularly when highly concentrated methanol fuel is fed into DMFCs. In this study, we present a novel design of anode diffusion media (DM) wherein spatial variation of hydrophobicity along the through-plane direction is realized by special polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) coating procedure. According to the capillary transport theory for porous media, the anode DM design can significantly affect both methanol and water transport processes in DMFCs. To examine its influence, three different membrane-electrode assemblies are fabricated and tested for various methanol feed concentrations. Polarization curves show that cell performance at high methanol feed concentration conditions is greatly improved with the anode DM design with increasing hydrophobicity toward the anode catalyst layer. In addition, we investigate the influence of the wettability of the anode microporous layer (MPL) on cell performance and show that for DMFC operation at high methanol feed concentration, the hydrophilic anode MPL fabricated with an ionomer binder is more beneficial than conventional hydrophobic MPLs fabricated with PTFE. This paper highlights that controlling wetting characteristics of the anode DM and MPL is of paramount importance for mitigating methanol crossover in DMFCs.  相似文献

A series of poly(tetrafluoroethylene)/carbon black composite-based single-layer gas diffusion layers (PTFE/CB-GDLs) for proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) was successfully prepared from carbon black and un-sintered PTFE, which included powder resin and colloidal dispersion, by a simple inexpensive method. The scanning electron micrographs of PTFE/CB-GDLs indicated that the PTFE resins were homogeneously dispersed in the carbon black matrix and showed a microporous layer (MPL)-like structure. The as-prepared PTFE/CB-GDLs exhibited good mechanical property, high gas permeability, and sufficient water repellency. The best current density obtained from the PEMFC with the single-layer PTFE/CB-GDL was 1.27 and 0.42 A cm−2 for H2/O2 and H2/air system, respectively.

The microporous layer (MPL) of diffusion medium has an important impact on the water management ability of proton exchange membrane fuel cells. In this study, six kinds of carbon black were used to prepare the cathode MPL. The thickness, conductivity, pore structure, hydrophobicity, and surface microstructure of MPL were characterized. The single cell was prepared and electrochemical tests were performed. The results showed that the single cell prepared by Acetylene black (ACET) and Vulcan XC-72R has a considerable power generation performance. In addition, polyvinylidene fluoride hexafluoropropylene copolymer P(VDF-HFP) was used to replace Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) as hydrophobic binder. MPL with different P(VDF-HFP) contents were prepared, and the single cell performance was investigated. The results showed that all the single cells prepared by P(VDF-HFP) were worse than that of PTFE. This study provides an important reference for further improving the performance of fuel cells from the perspective of material optimization with MPL.  相似文献

In situ experimental tests and scanning electron microscope (SEM) observations are done to explore the impact of geometry structure and operating conditions on the performance and durability of alkaline electrolyte membrane fuel cell (AEMFC) accompanied by electrochemical diagnosis. The results show that low anode and cathode polarization resistances can be achieved by selecting a proper ionomer mass fraction (IMF) of the catalyst layer (CL). Increasing the IMF can improve the tolerance to inlet gas humidity. The presence of the anode microporous layer (MPL) greatly improves the cell performance, but cathode MPL plays a reverse effect. After the durability test, the homogeneity of CL is seriously deformed, leading to a great increment of anode and cathode polarization resistances, verified by the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and SEM results. An enhancement of fuel cell durability is achieved by adding nanoscale polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) into CL. This work can provide some guidance for the structural and operating parameter optimization of the AEMFC researches in the future.  相似文献

Despite serious methanol crossover issues in Direct Methanol Fuel Cells (DMFCs), the use of high-concentration methanol fuel is highly demanded to improve the energy density of passive fuel DMFC systems for portable applications. In this paper, the effects of a hydrophobic anode micro-porous layer (MPL) and cathode air humidification are experimentally studied as a function of the methanol-feed concentration. It is found in polarization tests that the anode MPL dramatically influences cell performance, positively under high-concentration methanol-feed but negatively under low-concentration methanol-feed, which indicates that methanol transport in the anode is considerably altered by the presence of the anode MPL. In addition, the experimental data show that cathode air humidification has a beneficial effect on cell performance due to the enhanced backflow of water from the cathode to the anode and the subsequent dilution of the methanol concentration in the anode catalyst layer. Using an advanced membrane electrode assembly (MEA) with the anode MPL and cathode air humidification, we report that the maximum power density of 78 mW/cm2 is achieved at a methanol-feed concentration of 8 M and cell operating temperature of 60 °C. This paper illustrates that the anode MPL and cathode air humidification are key factors to successfully operate a DMFC with high-concentration methanol fuel.  相似文献

The passive operation of a direct methanol fuel cell with neat methanol requires the water that is produced at the cathode to diffuse through the membrane to the anode to compensate the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). Hence, the anode performance of this type of fuel cell can be limited by the water transport rate from the cathode to the anode. In this work we theoretically show that the water transport from the cathode to the anode depends primarily on the design of the cathode gas diffusion layer (GDL). We investigate experimentally the effects of the design parameters of the cathode GDL, including the PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) content in the backing layer (BL), and the carbon loading and the PTFE content in the microporous layer (MPL) on the water transport and the performance of the passive DMFC with the help of a reference electrode. The results indicate that on one hand, these parameters can be adjusted to decrease the water concentration loss of the anode performance, but on the other hand, they can also cause an increase in the oxygen concentration loss of the cathode performance. Hence, an optimal balance in minimizing the both concentration losses is the key to maximize the cell performance.  相似文献

Traditional dense microporous layers (MPLs) are suitable for low-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), but they greatly hinder mass transport in high-temperature PEMFCs. Here, we report a novel cathode MPL based on reticulated polyaniline nanowires that were grown on carbon paper via in-situ electropolymerization. The maximum power density of the high-temperature PEMFC based on the new MPL was 476 mW/cm2, which was 36% higher than that based on a conventional MPL. Oxygen gain tests and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy showed that the new MPL accelerated oxygen transfer due to its unique pore size distribution, which ultimately improved the performance of the HT-PEMFC.  相似文献

In this paper, the effects of microporous layer (MPL) addition and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) loading of gas diffusion layers (GDLs) on the overall performance of the proton exchange membrane fuel cell have been investigated. The focus was on fuel cells that operate at relatively low current densities where the power demand is low, but the efficiency is of concern. The results show that, in the activation loss‐controlled region, the performance of the fuel cell operating with moderately PTFE‐treated carbon substrates is superior over that operating with coated GDLs. This is due to the addition of the MPL which lengthens the diffusion paths and significantly reduces the mass transport properties. Conversely, in the ohmic loss‐controlled region, the fuel cell with coated GDLs performs better than those with carbon substrates. This is explained by the enhanced contact of the GDL with the adjacent components after the MPL addition, which outweighs the negative effects associated with the activation loss‐controlled region. Also, it was found that the fuel cell performance becomes lower if the GDL is treated with a relatively high PTFE loading in either the carbon substrate (due to the decrease in the porosity of the GDL) or the MPL.
