The effects of compressive residual stress, surface roughness, microstructure hardening induced by shot peening (SP) on the fretting fatigue (FF) resistance of Ti811 titanium alloy at elevated temperature were evaluated. The results show that SP improves the FF resistance of Ti811 alloy at 350 °C, but decreases the resistance at 500 °C. Compressive residual stress is the predominant factor in improving the FF resistance of the alloy at 350 °C. Compressive residual stress induced by SP arrests crack growth. Microstructure hardening due to SP has a minor effect on FF resistance. Surface roughening induced by SP is detrimental to the FF resistance of the alloy at both 350 and 500 °C, as microcracks initiate easily in the roughened surface under these conditions.  相似文献

Generally a clear beneficial effect of nitriding duration on resultant mechanical characteristics is reported in the literature. Considering the high energy cost in the competitive business environment, this work explores any opportunities to reduce nitriding duration while not sacrificing the resultant mechanical characteristics and fatigue behavior. To this end prior shot peening is applied with particularly severe parameters to generate ultra-fine grains and nano-structures in the surface layers. It was recently shown that the local fatigue strength improvement by combination of severe shot peening and 15 h nitriding could not eventually contribute in further increasing the fatigue limit of high strength low alloy steel smooth specimens as compared to only 15 h nitriding. In the present research combination of severe shot peening with nitriding at 7.5 h is assessed. It is affirmed that improvement by hybrid treatment can be actively exploited in the form of duration reduction. The characterization is carried out by optical and scanning electron microscopy observation, micro-hardness test, surface roughness measurement and X-ray diffraction measurement of residual stress. Fatigue limit of the treated specimens is experimentally determined. A critical comparison between the hybrid process with 50% nitriding duration reduction and the original nitriding process is presented. Based on the result of this study, nitriding duration can be successfully reduced without losing improvements in mechanical characteristics and fatigue behavior if a suitable prior severe shot peening, aimed to surface nano-crystallization, is performed.  相似文献

The influence of residual stresses induced by machining, scratches and different processes of surface improvement, on fatigue resistance has been studied on Waspaloy at 426 °C under load control. Tests were performed on single edge notched samples. Scratches on notched samples exhibited a much larger effect, reducing fatigue life by an order of magnitude. Surface improvement processes, like blending of scratches and shot peening, substantially improved fatigue resistance as compared to notched samples with scratches.SEM analysis shows multiple crack initiation. The information on striation spacing in the given set of surface conditions was used to estimate initiation/stage I period, growth up to 400 μm deep crack and total fatigue life.  相似文献

In this work, we are interested in the bending fatigue resistance of the nitrided 42CrMo4 steel improvement by shot-peening. The micro-structure, the micro-hardness, the residual stresses distribution and the crack resistance of the hardened steel are determined. The gains, expressed in term of endurance limit, brought by these treatments are established by three-points bending fatigue tests and discussed in relation to the residual stresses evolution under the cyclic loading conditions. The fatigue fracture resistance after a combined process of surface hardening including shot peening followed by nitriding is analyzed by methods of fracture mechanisms. This reveals that the gain provided by the nitriding is about 8% against 35% for the nitriding with shot-peening. This is primarily allotted to a high level of compressive residual stresses for nitrided + shot-peened state compared to the nitrided state. The fast relaxation of these stresses in the low cycle fatigue domain is at the origin of the fatigue fracture at surface, which leads to a lower fatigue fracture resistance compared to the untreated state. Based on multiaxial HCF criterion of Sines and taking into account the different surface properties, a local predictive approach was developed.  相似文献

Residual stresses and microstructure on surface layer of (TiB + TiC)/Ti–6Al–4V are investigated after stress peening. The values of domain sizes and microstrain of surface deformation layers are calculated from the integral breadth of diffractive peaks via Voigt method. The results show that the compressive residual stresses and microhardness are improved significantly after stress peening, and the variations of residual stresses are affected by both the prestresses and the directions of measurement. Microstructure investigations reveal that, the deformation amount increase after stress peening, and smaller domain grain sizes and higher density dislocations are introduced. The changes of microstructures are mainly influenced by the values of prestresses. According to these investigations, it is can be found that the stress peening is superior to the conventional shot peening treatments and it is an effective method to improve the surface properties of (TiB + TiC)/Ti–6Al–4V composite.  相似文献

Laser shock peening was carried out to reveal the effects on ASTM: 410L 00Cr12 microstructures and fatigue resistance in the temperature range 25–600 °C. The new conception of pinning effect was proposed to explain the improvements at the high temperature. Residual stress was measured by X-ray diffraction with sin2ψ method, a high temperature extensometer was utilized to measure the strain and control the strain signal. The grain and precipitated phase evolutionary process were observed by scanning electron microscopy. These results show that a deep layer of compressive residual stress is developed by laser shock peening, and ultimately the isothermal stress-controlled fatigue behavior is enhanced significantly. The formation of high density dislocation structure and the pinning effect at the high temperature, which induces a stronger surface, lower residual stress relaxation and more stable dislocation arrangement. The results have profound guiding significance for fatigue strengthening mechanism of components at the elevated temperature.  相似文献

The effects of cold spray coating and substrate surface preparation on crack initiation under cyclic loading have been studied on Al2024 alloy specimens. Commercially pure (CP) aluminum feedstock powder has been deposited on Al2024-T351 samples using a cold-spray coating technique known as high velocity particle consolidation. Substrate specimens were prepared by surface grit blasting or shot peening prior to coating. The fatigue behavior of both coated and uncoated specimens was then tested under rotating bend conditions at two stress levels, 180 MPa and 210 MPa. Scanning electron microscopy was used to analyze failure surfaces and identify failure mechanisms. The results indicate that the fatigue strength was significantly improved on average, up to 50% at 180 MPa and up to 38% at 210 MPa, by the deposition of the cold-sprayed CP-Al coatings. Coated specimens first prepared by glass bead grit blasting experienced the largest average increase in fatigue life over bare specimens. The results display a strong dependency of the fatigue strength on the surface preparation and cold spray parameters.  相似文献

This paper is focused on the VHCF behavior of aeronautical titanium alloy under tensile and torsion fatigue loadings. Tensile tests were carried out with two different stress ratios: R = −1 and R = 0.1. Both surface and subsurface crack initiations were observed. In the case of subsurface crack initiation several fatigue life controlling mechanisms of crack initiation were found under fully-reversed loading conditions: initiation from (1) strong defects; (2) ‘macro-zone’ borders; (3) quasi-smooth facets and (4) smooth facets. Tests with stress ratio R = 0.1, have shown that initiation from the borders of ‘macro-zones’ becomes the dominant crack initiation mechanism in presence of positive mean stress. Like for the tensile results, surface and subsurface crack initiations were observed under ultrasonic torsion in spite of the maximum shear stress location on the specimen surface. But the real reason for the subsurface crack initiation under torsion was not found.  相似文献

SAE 9260 spring steel specimens after enduring 50% of their mean fatigue life were subjected to laser shock peening using an in-house developed 2.5 J/7 ns pulsed Neodymium-doped Yttrium Aluminum Garnet (Nd:YAG) laser for studying their fatigue life enhancement. In the investigated range of process parameters, laser shock peening resulted in the extension of fatigue life of these partly fatigue damaged specimens by more than 15 times. Contributing factors for the enhanced fatigue life of laser peened specimens are: about 400 μm thick compressed surface layer with magnitude of surface stress in the range of −600 to −700 MPa, about 20% increase in surface hardness and unaltered surface finish. For laser peening of ground steel surface, an adhesive-backed black polyvinyl chloride (PVC) tape has been found to be a superior sacrificial coating than conventionally used black paint. The effect of repeated laser peening treatment was studied to repair locally surface melted regions and the treatment has been found to be effective in re-establishing desired compressive stress pattern on the erstwhile tensile-stressed surface.  相似文献

Fatigue properties of bainitic 100Cr6 (SAE 52100, JIS SUJ2) steel are investigated in the high cycle and very high cycle fatigue (VHCF) regime. Fully reversed tension–compression fatigue tests are performed with ultrasonic fatigue testing equipment. Specimens are grinded which leads to surface compression stresses and increased surface roughness. About 1/3 of the specimens failed after crack initiation at interior Al2O3? or TiN-inclusions and 2/3 failed after surface crack initiation at scratches or cavities. When inclusions are considered as cracks, failures can occur at minimum stress intensity range of 2.8 MPa m1/2, and maximum stress intensity range without failure is 3.3 MPa m1/2. Facets are visible close to the inclusion in some specimens, and the stress intensity range at the border of the facet is approximately 4.5 MPa m1/2. Murakami’s model can well predict the endurance limit at 109 cycles for internal failures considering the area of the inclusion in the evaluation. Surface fatigue crack initiation can lead to failure above 108 cycles. When scratches are considered as cracks, minimum stress intensity range of 2.5 MPa m1/2 can propagate surface cracks to failure. Fracture mechanics approach showed several similarities to literature results of the same material tested in tempered martensite condition.  相似文献

Fatigue properties of two Al-containing steels have been investigated by rotating bending fatigue tests. Results show that the fatigue limits (the fatigue strength at 107 cycles) were improved remarkably by plasma nitriding due to the high hardness of 1000 Hv and compressive stress of 400 MPa in the nitrided layer. Scanning electron microscopic observations show that after nitriding the fatigue crack initiation sites moved from the surface flaws or near-surface matrix into the AlN inclusions at around the case-core interface. Degassing treatment can increase the fatigue limit because it prevented fatigue crack initiation at AlN inclusions due to the reduced [N] contents and refined inclusion size.  相似文献

This paper discusses the effects of a combination of plasma-carburizing and deep-rolling on notch fatigue properties of a Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Circumferentially V-notched cylindrical Ti-6Al-4V alloy specimens were plasma-carburized at a relatively low temperature for the improvement of wear resistance, and then, deep-rolled at the notch root for inducing compressive residual stress. Scanning electron microscopy, optical microscopy, laser scanning microscopy, surface roughness tester, and micro-hardness tester were used to characterize the modified surface layer at the notch root. Axial loading fatigue tests (R = 0.1) were performed using a servo-hydraulic testing machine in a laboratory atmosphere at an ambient temperature. The notch fatigue life of the specimen was reduced by plasma-carburizing due to the brittleness caused by the higher hardness in addition to the disappearance of compressive residual stress on the notched surface, but remarkably improved by the subsequent deep-rolling. The surface layer containing the compressive residual stress and the work hardening induced by deep-rolling effectively prevented and delayed the fatigue crack initiation and propagation of deep-rolled carburized specimen.  相似文献

Four kinds of surface hardened-specimens (ordinary structural steel with carbon content of 0.45% C) having hardened thicknesses of 0.7–1.8 mm were prepared using a ‘super-rapid induction heating (SRIH) system’. Rotation bending fatigue tests were performed with special focus on the effect of a hardened thickness on fatigue properties. Measurement of residual stress and observation of the fracture surface were also carried out to investigate the fracture mechanism of the specimen with a shallow hardened layer. It was found that there is not much improvement of fatigue strength at 107 cycles for specimens with shallow hardened layers in spite of having a high compressive residual stress of about 1000 MPa. This is because the fatigue crack originating from inside the hardened layer leads to the final fracture of the specimen (internal fracture mode). Improvement of fatigue strength has been achieved on the specimen with thick hardened layers, such as those about 1.8 mm thick. In this case, fatigue cracks originate from inclusions located in hardened layers, which leads to final fracture (hardened-layer fracture mode).  相似文献

This paper is aimed at evaluating the residual stress relaxation and its effect on the fatigue strength of AISI 316L steel ground surfaces in comparison to electro-polished surfaces. An experimental evaluation was performed using 3-point and 4-point bending fatigue tests at Rσ = 0.1 on two sets of notched specimens finished by electro-polishing and grinding. The residual stress fields were measured at the notch root of specimens, before and after fatigue tests, by means of the X-ray diffraction technique. It was found a degradation of about −35% for the 4-point bending fatigue limit at 2 × 106 cycles of the ground specimens in comparison to the electro-polished ones. This degradation is associated with a slight relaxation of the grinding residual stresses which remain significant tensile stresses at the stabilized state. While under the 3-point bending test, these residual stresses relax completely and provoke a noticeable increase of the fatigue limit estimated at about 50% in comparison to the 4-point bending fatigue test. The numerical evaluation of residual stress relaxation was carried out by FE analyses of the cyclic hardening behaviour of the ground layer. The isotropic and nonlinear kinematic model proposed by Chaboche was used and calibrated for the base material and the ground layer. The results show that residual stresses relax to a stabilized state characterized by elastic-shakedown response. This stabilization is occurred after the first cycle of the 4-point bending test corresponding to the higher stress concentration (Kt-4p = 1.66), while it requires many cycles under the 3-point bending test corresponding to the lower stress concentration (Kt-3p = 1.54). The incorporation of stabilized residual stress values into the Dang Van’s criterion has permitted to predict with an acceptable accuracy the fatigue limits under both bending modes.  相似文献

This paper systematically investigates the effect of laser shock peening without coating parameters on the microstructural evolution, and dislocation configurations induced by ultra-high plastic strains and strain rates. Based on an analysis of optical microscopy, polarized light microscopy, transmission electron microscopy observations and residual stress analysis, the significant influence of laser shock peening parameters due to the effect of plasma generation and shock wave propagation has been confirmed. Although the optical microscopy results revealed no significant microstructural changes after laser shock peening, i.e. no heat effect zone and differences in the distribution of second-phase particles, expressive influence of laser treatment parameters on the laser shock induced craters was confirmed. Moreover, polarized light microscopy results have confirmed the existence of well-defined longish grains up to 455 μm in length in the centre of the plate due to the rolling effect, and randomly oriented smaller grains (20 μm × 50 μm) in the surface due to the static recrystallization effect. Laser shock peening is reflected in an exceptional increase in dislocation density with various configurations, i.e. dislocation lines, dislocation cells, dislocation tangles, and the formation of dense dislocation walls. More importantly, the microstructure is considerably refined due to the effect of strain deformations induced by laser shock peening process. The results have confirmed that dense dislocation structures during ultra-high plastic deformation with the addition of shear bands producing ultra-fine (60–200 nm) and nano-grains (20–50 nm). Furthermore, dislocation density was increased by a factor of 2.5 compared to the untreated material (29 × 1013 m 2 vs. 12 × 1013 m 2).  相似文献

Cyclic torsion fatigue tests with superimposed static torsion loads are performed with VDSiCr spring steel with shot-peened surface in the high cycle fatigue (HCF) and very high cycle fatigue (VHCF) regime. Fatigue properties are investigated at load ratios R = 0.1, R = 0.35 and R = 0.5 up to limiting lifetimes of 5 × 109 cycles with a newly developed ultrasonic torsion testing method. Increasing the load ratio reduces the shear stress amplitude that the material can withstand without failure. Fatigue cracks are initiated at the surface in the HCF regime. In the VHCF regime, cracks are preferentially initiated internally in the matrix, below the surface layer with compression residual stresses, and less frequently at the surface. Cyclic and mean shear stresses with 50% survival probability in the VHCF regime are presented in a Haigh diagram. Linear line approximation delivers a mean stress sensitivity of M = 0.33 for load ratios between R = −1 and R = 0.5.  相似文献

Microstructure irreversibility plays a major role in the gigacycle fatigue crack initiation. Surface Persistent Slip Bands (PSB) formation on Copper and its alloy was well studied by Mughrabi et al. as typical fatigue crack nucleation in the very high cycle fatigue regime. In the present paper, Armco iron sheet specimens (1 mm thickness) were tested under ultrasonic frequency fatigue loading in tension–compression (R = −1). The test on the thin sheets has required a new design of specimen and new attachment of specimen. After gigacycle fatigue testing, the surface appearance was observed by optical and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Below about 88 MPa stress, there is no PSBs even after fatigue cycle up to 5 × 109. With a sufficient stress (above 88 MPa), PSBs in the ferrite grain was observed by optic microscope after 108 cycles loading. Investigation with the SEM shows that the PSB can appear in the body-centered cubic crystal in the gigacycle fatigue regime. Because of the grain boundary, however, the local PSB did not continually progress to the grain beside even after 109 cycles when the stress remained at the low level.  相似文献

Many engineering components are subjected to combined torsion and axial loading in their working conditions, and the cyclic combined loading can result in fatigue fracture after a very long life fatigue regime. The present investigation extends over a wider range of test conditions involving surface treatment and manufacturing effects such as machining, so as to understand the fatigue properties and damage mechanisms of the material beyond 109 cycles.This work reviews the effect of surface conditions on the fatigue behaviour of mechanical components in the gigacycle regime. Evidently, surface conditions can be variable and are due to very different reasons such as manufacturing effects like machining or final surface processes on the parts, heat treatment before and after manufacturing or environmental conditions like corrosion. In fact, this is a detailed comparative study based on the results of experiments carried out by our research team working in this domain. For this reason, it reveals a continuous decrease of the fatigue strength in the VHCF domain for the investigated materials under different surface conditions as important information for design engineers.Experimental investigation on the test specimens was performed at a frequency of 20 kHz with different stress ratios varying between R = ?1 and R = 0.7 at room temperature. All of the fatigue tests were carried out up to 1010 cycles. The damage mechanism was evaluated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM).  相似文献

Rotating bending (52.5 Hz) and ultrasonic (20 kHz) fatigue tests were performed on the specimens of a bearing steel, which were quenched and tempered at 150 °C, 300 °C, 450 °C and 600 °C, respectively, to investigate the influence of strength level and loading frequency on the fatigue behavior in very-high-cycle regime. Influences on fatigue resistance of materials, characteristics of SN curves and transition of crack initiation site were discussed. The specimens with higher strength showed interior fracture mode in very-high-cycle regime and with slight frequency effect, otherwise cracks all initiate from the surface and the fatigue strength was much higher under ultrasonic cycling.  相似文献

This paper studies the fatigue behavior of basalt fiber reinforced epoxy polymer (BFRP) composites and reveals the degradation mechanism of BFRP under different stress levels of cyclic loadings. The BFRP composites were tested under tension–tension fatigue load with different stress levels by an advanced fatigue loading equipment combined with in-situ scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The specimens were under long-term cyclic loads up to 1 × 107 cycles. The stiffness degradation, SN curves and the residual strength of run-out specimens were recorded during the test. The fatigue strength was predicted with the testing results using reliability methods. Meanwhile, the damage propagation and fracture surface of all specimens were observed and tracked during fatigue loading by an in-situ SEM, based on which damage mechanism under different stress levels was studied. The results show the prediction of fatigue strength by fitting SN data up to 2 × 106 cycles is lower than that of the data by 1 × 107 cycles. It reveals the fatigue strength perdition is highly associated with the long-term run-out cycles and traditional two million run-out cycles cannot accurately predict fatigue behavior. The SEM images reveal that under high level of stress, the critical fiber breaking failure is the dominant damage, while the matrix cracking and interfacial debonding are main damage patterns at the low and middle fatigue stress level for BFRP. Based on the above fatigue behavior and damage pattern, a three stage fracture mechanism model under fatigue loading is developed.  相似文献
