In this paper R-ratio effects on fatigue crack growth near threshold region of a metastable austenitic stainless steel (MASS) in two different conditions, i.e. annealed and cold rolled, is investigated. The authors present two approaches to correlate FCGR data for R = 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7 and Kmax = 23 MPa√m using a two-parameters approach (ΔK, Kmax and α in Kujawski’s model) and crack closure model (using Elber’s Kop and in Donald’s ACRn2 approaches). The Kop and ACRn2 were experimentally measured on a single edge tension specimens. The Kop measurements were performed using a modified method and based on ASTM standards. While the two driving force approaches correlate data well in the Paris region, they fail to correlate them in the threshold region. However, this correlation can be improved in the threshold region when a different α value from the Paris region is used. The authors indicated that two different mechanisms operate; one in the Paris region and another in the near threshold. Hence, they proposed to combine the two-parameter and crack closure approaches where ΔK is replaced by ΔKeff (estimated by a new method proposed in this paper), which is shown to correlate the FCGR data for different stress ratios for annealed steel. The correlation for cold rolled condition shows improvement with the new approach but is not as good as for the annealed one. The author further suggests to modify Kmax in the two-parameter approach.  相似文献

The lifetime of a specimen under cyclic loading is usually limited by the initiation and growth of microcracks. Experimental results for the austenitic stainless steel X6 CrNiNb 18-10 are given and a model for crack initiation and crack growth in the first grains of a polycrystalline aggregate is proposed.  相似文献

The effects of a hydrogen gas environment on the fatigue characteristics of a type 304 austenitic stainless steel were investigated and the following results were obtained. The hydrogen effect is not clearly seen by judging fatigue life diagram. However, crack initiation retards and crack propagation accelerates in hydrogen gas environment. The retardation seems to be caused by the absence of oxygen and water vapour. The acceleration seems to be caused by the intrinsic hydrogen effect.  相似文献

In the as-quenched state, 13%Cr-4%Ni martensitic stainless steels are essentially 100% martensitic. However, a certain amount of austenite is formed during the tempering of this alloy. This reformed austenite is thermally stable at room temperature but can transform to martensite under stress. This transformation is known to happen during impact testing but it has never been established if it occurs during fatigue crack propagation. This study presents the results of X-ray diffraction measurements of reformed austenite before and after crack growth testing. It has been found that reformed austenite does transform to martensite at the crack tip and that this transformation occurs even at a low stress intensity factor. Low-cycle fatigue tests were conducted to verify austenite transformation under cyclic straining. It was found that reformed austenite transforms only partially during the first strain reversal but that essentially all austenite has disappeared after 100 cycles. The relation between austenite transformation under low-cycle fatigue and its transformation during crack growth is also discussed.  相似文献

The effects of stress ratio on the fatigue crack initiation and growth were investigated by a newly developed unified model, which is based on the cyclic plasticity property of material and a multiaxial fatigue damage criterion in incremental form. The cyclic elastic-plastic stress-strain field was analyzed using the general-purpose finite element software (ABAQUS) with the implementation of a robust cyclic plasticity theory. The fatigue damage was determined by applying the calculated stress-strain responses to the incremental fatigue criterion. The fatigue crack growth rates were then obtained by the unified model. Six compact specimens with a thickness less than 3.8 mm were used for the fatigue crack initiation and growth testing under various stress ratios (−1.0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.5). Finite element results indicated that crack closure occurred for the specimen whose stress ratio was less than 0.3. The combined effects of accumulated fatigue damage induced by cyclic plastic deformation and possible contact of cracked surfaces were responsible for the fatigue crack initiation and growth. The predicted results agreed with the benchmark mode I fatigue crack growth experiments very well.  相似文献

A mesoscale model of fatigue crack formation and stress–strain behavior in crystalline alloys entitled Sistaninia–Niffenegger Fatigue (SNF) model is applied to AISI 316L austenitic stainless steel. An inelastic hysteresis energy criterion in conjunction with continuum damage modeling provides a strong tool for studying the behavior of the austenitic steel under cyclic loading. The model predictions are validated against fatigue experimental data. The results show that this microstructural-based modeling approach is capable for predicting the behavior of the steel even under complex loading conditions. It can reproduce and help to understand well known fatigue experimental facts, e.g. the effect of grain size and initial defects, by considering the anisotropic behavior of crystalline materials at the level of the microstructure.  相似文献

Failures of four different 300-series austenitic stainless steel biomedical fixation implants were examined. The device fractures were observed optically, and their surfaces were examined by scanning electron microscopy. Fractography identified fatigue to be the failure mode for all four of the implants. In every instance, the fatigue cracks initiated from the attachment screw holes at the reduced cross sections of the implants. Two fixation implant designs were analyzed using finite-element modeling. This analysis confirmed the presence of severe stress concentrations adjacent to the attachment screw holes, the fatigue crack initiation sites. Conclusions were reached regarding the design of these types of implant fixation devices, particularly the location of the attachment screw holes. The use of austenitic stainless steel for these biomedical implant devices is also addressed. Recommendations to improve the fixation implant design are suggested, and the potential benefits of the substitution of titanium or a titanium alloy for the stainless steel are discussed.  相似文献

Fatigue crack propagation experiments under both force and displacement control have been performed on the wrought superalloy Haynes 230 at room temperature, using a single edge notched specimen. The force controlled tests are nominally elastic, and the displacement controlled tests have nominally large plastic hysteresis at the beginning of the tests, but saturates towards linear elastic conditions as the crack grows. As some tests are in the large scale yielding regime, a non-linear fracture mechanics approach is used to correlate crack growth rates versus the fracture parameter ΔJ. It is shown that crack closure must be accounted for, to correctly model the crack growth seen in all the tests in a unified manner. For the force controlled small scale yielding tests the Newman crack closure model was used. The Newman equation is however not valid for large nominal cyclic plasticity, instead the crack closure in the displacement controlled tests is extracted from the test data. A good agreement between all tests is shown, when closure is accounted for and effective values of ΔJ are used.  相似文献

A conceptual approach was used to design a new Ni-free austenitic stainless steel with a unique combination of ultrahigh strength and ductility. The concept was based on the alloying of the 0.05C–18Cr–12Mn (wt.%) steel by 0.39%N and heavy warm rolling (84% reduction) at 1173 K (900 °C) to achieve the yield strength of minimum 1 GPa and high tensile strength and elongation due to a proper stability of the austenite as a result of the optimized stacking fault energy (SFE). The yield strength of 1010 MPa, tensile strength of 1150 MPa and high fracture strain of 70% were measured for the steel designed. Dislocation and solid solution hardening mechanisms are introduced as the main contributors for the ultrahigh yield strength of the steel. The strain hardening is gradual and the hardening rate reaches a high level of ∼2400 MPa at a high true strain of 40% due to slow α′-martensitic transformation and mechanical twinning. Consequently, the ductility of the designed steel is excellent.  相似文献

Fatigue crack growth (FCG) behaviour and its characteristics following tensile overloads were investigated for AISI 304 stainless steel in three different atmospheres; namely dry argon, moist air and hydrogen. The FCG tests were performed by MTS 810 servohydraulic machine. CT specimens were used for the tests and crack closure measurements were made using an extensometer. FCG rates of 304 stainless steel at both dry argon and moist air atmospheres have shown almost the same behaviour. In other words, the effect of moisture on FCG of this material is very small. However, in a hydrogen atmosphere, the material showed considerably higher crack growth rate in all regimes. In general, for all environments, the initial effect of overloads was to accelerate the FCG rate for a short distance (less than a mm) after which retardation occurred for a considerable amount of time. The main causes for retardation were found as crack blunting and a long reinitiation period for the fatigue crack. Regarding the environmental effect, the overload retardation was lowest in a hydrogen atmosphere. This low degree of retardation was explained by a hydrogen embrittlement mechanism. In a general sense, hydrogen may cause a different crack closure mechanism and hydrogen induced crack closure has come in to the picture. Scanning electron microscope and light microscope examinations agreed well with the above results.  相似文献

The present study focuses on the fatigue properties in the weld heat-affected zone (HAZ) of 800 MPa grade high-performance steel, which is commonly used in bridges and buildings. Single- and multi-pass HAZs were simulated by the Gleeble system. Fatigue properties were estimated using a crack propagation test under a 0.3 stress ratio and 0.1 load frequencies. The microstructures and fracture surfaces were analyzed by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The results of the crack propagation test showed that the fatigue crack growth rate of coarse-grained HAZ (CGHAZ) was faster than fine-grained HAZ (FGHAZ), although both regions have identical fully martensite microstructures, because FGHAZ has smaller prior austenite grain and martensite packet sizes, which can act as effective barriers to crack propagation. The fatigue crack growth rate of intercritically reheated CGHAZ (ICCGHAZ) was the fastest among local zones in the HAZ, due to rapid crack initiation and propagation via the massive martensite-austenite (M-A) constituent.  相似文献

The ferrite phase of cast duplex stainless steels becomes embrittled after thermal ageing, leading to a significant decrease in fracture properties. In the present paper, the influence of ageing and solidification structure on the fatigue crack growth rates (FCGRs) and on the fatigue crack growth mechanisms in a cast duplex stainless steel is studied. FCGRs measured at room temperature increase slightly after ageing at 400 °C, due to ferrite cleavage and to the resulting irregular shape of the crack front. The crack propagates without any preferential path by successive ruptures of ferrite and austenite phases. The macroscopic crack propagation plane depends on the crystallographic orientation of the ferrite grain. Secondary cracks can appear due to the complex solidification structure. This in turn influences the FCGR. The fatigue crack closure level decreases with increasing ageing. This can be explained by a decrease in the kinematic cyclic hardening of these materials.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The influence of low-temperature gaseous carburisation on notch fatigue behaviour of 316L steel under cyclic axial loading was investigated. After carburisation, the carburised case was well distributed at the surface region and was not influenced by the notch geometry. Low-temperature carburisation considerably enhanced the notch fatigue performance, which led to 32% and 44% increase in the endurance limits for the specimens with stress concentration factors K t?=?1.91 and 3.91, respectively. The notch sensitivity of 316L steel reduced after carburisation. Irrespective of the applied stress amplitude, the fatigue crack nucleation sites were always at the notch root surface for the untreated specimens. For the carburised specimens, fatigue cracks nucleation changed from surface at high-level stress to subsurface at low-level stress.  相似文献

Load ratio effects are of prime concern when modeling of fatigue crack growth (FCG) rate is required as a prerequisite for a reliable life prediction. The majority of research efforts regarding the load ratio effects are based on Elber's ΔKeff approach. However, there are intrinsic difficulties encountered with its consistent application to FCG prediction. In this paper two popular crack-growth-life prediction codes FASTRAN and AFGROW are modified utilizing the enhanced partial crack closure model. The proposed utilization aggregates apparent closure mechanisms involved and demonstrates a better correlation and a significant scatter reduction of FCG data taken from literature, especially in the near-threshold region.  相似文献

Microstructures and micro-textures of X2095 Al–Li alloy in as-received/superplastic state were characterized by means of SEM/BDS, X-ray diffraction and orientation imaging microscopy (OIM). It was observed that the microstructure of the alloy was typical of a particulate-reinforced composite material, consisting of aluminum matrix and homogeneously distributed TB(Al7Cu4Li) particles with a volume fraction of about 10%. Brass-type texture was the dominant texture component. Both constant amplitude and near-threshold fatigue crack growth rates of the alloy in the L–T and T–L orientations were determined at different stress ratios. Particular attention was paid to the role of the TB phase in the fatigue crack growth. When a fatigue crack approached a TB particle, the crack basically meandered to avoid the particle. The TB particles thus provided a strong resistance to the propagation of fatigue crack by promoting crack deflection and the related crack closure effects. The fatigue crack propagation behavior has been explained by the microstructural features, micro-textures, cracking characteristics and crack closure effects.  相似文献

This study reports an experimental investigation of fatigue crack propagation in AlMgSi1-T6 aluminium alloy using both constant and variable load amplitudes. Crack closure was monitored in all tests by the compliance technique using a pin microgauge. For the constant amplitude tests four different stress ratios were analysed. The crack closure parameter U was calculated and related with Δ K and the stress ratio, R . The threshold of the stress intensity factor range, Δ K th , was also obtained. Fatigue crack propagation tests with single tensile peak overloads have been performed at constant load amplitude conditions. The observed transient post overload behaviour is discussed in terms of the overload ratio, Δ K baseline level and R . The crack closure parameter U trends are compared with the crack growth transients. Experimental support is given for the hypothesis that crack closure is the main factor determining the transient crack growth behaviour following overloads on AlMgSi1-T6 alloy for plane stress conditions.  相似文献

Considering that many applications of Lean Duplex Stainless Steels (LDSSs) involve cyclic loading, the aim of this paper is to study short crack initiation and growth during low (LCF) and high cycle fatigue (HCF) in AL 2003 (UNS S32003). Electron Backscattered Diffraction (EBSD) analysis of plastically active grains allows to determinate the slip systems and their associated Schmid factor (SF). Additionally, the dislocation structure developed during cycling is observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Whereas in HCF cracks nucleate at grains boundaries, during LCF cracks nucleate along intrusion/extrusions in ferritic grains and as they reach austenitic grains grow along active slip systems or by double slip system. Moreover, phase boundaries and grain boundaries act as effective barrier against crack propagation.  相似文献
