SBA-15 and ZrO2 (10–50 wt.%) containing SBA-15 mesoporous materials were prepared by direct and post-synthesis methods. Characterization using low angle XRD, pore size distribution, CO2 chemisorption indicate that hexagonal mesoporous structure is retained even after ZrO2 addition (25 wt.%). Mo, CoMo and NiMo catalysts prepared using these supports were examined by XRD, oxygen chemisorption, temperature programmed reduction (TPR). The catalysts were tested for hydrodesulfurization (HDS) of thiophene and hydrogenation (HYD) of cyclohexene. HDS of thiophene for 8%Mo, 3%Co8%Mo, and 3%Ni8%Mo increases with increasing ZrO2 loading in SBA-15 up to 25 wt.%. Oxygen chemisorption and TPR hydrogen consumption indicated that the molybdenum dispersion and anion vacancies, and catalytic activities are significantly influenced by ZrO2 content in Zr-SBA-15. A comparison indicated that TiO2-SBA-15, ZrO2-SBA-15 supported CoMo catalysts show higher activities for hydrodesulfurization.

The activity and selectivity of rhenium promoted cobalt Fischer–Tropsch catalysts supported on Al2O3, TiO2 and SiO2 have been studied in a fixed-bed reactor at 483 K and 20 bar. Exposure of the catalysts to water added to the feed deactivates the Al2O3 supported catalyst, while the activity of the TiO2 and SiO2 supported catalysts increased. However, at high concentrations of water both the SiO2 and TiO2 supported catalyst deactivated. Common for all catalysts was an increase in C5+ selectivity and a decrease in the CH4 selectivity by increasing the water partial pressure. The catalysts have been characterized by scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM), BET, H2 chemisorption and X-ray diffraction (XRD).

The catalytic activity study of cobalt oxides dispersed on different supports evidenced first the highest performances of zirconia based catalysts in the reaction of toluene oxidation. The influence of the presence of ethylenediamine (en) during the preparation of Co/ZrO2 and the ZrO2 support modification by Y2O3 were then studied and compared with reference catalyst prepared conventionally by impregnation of ZrO2 with an aqueous solution of Co(NO3)2. Addition of an aqueous solution of ethylenediamine to a cobalt nitrate solution led to a strong increase on the catalytic activity of the activated solids in the toluene deep oxidation as compared with the reference catalyst. The best catalytic results were explained in terms of cobalt oxides dispersion but also in terms of Co–support interaction. The generated cobalt species were reducible at much lower temperatures and then were more active in the toluene total oxidation. Finally an efficient catalyst for VOC oxidation was produced combining the modifications of ZrO2 by yttrium and of the precursor.

Direct decomposition of N2O was investigated using simulated and real industrial gas stream coming from an adipic acid plant. Two different kinds of catalysts were studied: (i) LaB1−xB′xO3 and CaB1−xCuxO3 (B = Mn, Fe and B′ = Cu, Ni) perovskites (PVKs) and (ii) supported PVKs (10 or 20 wt.%) on γ-Al2O3 and CeO2–ZrO2. The structural modifications induced by the composition of PVK samples affect the catalytic performances: mixed oxide formation in CaMn0.7Cu0.3O3 samples allows to reach the highest values of N2O conversion while the effect of PVK phases is more controversial. The importance of copper on catalytic activities is confirmed by the investigation on CaMn1−xCuxO3 samples. The best results were obtained with a CaMn0.6Cu0.4O3 catalyst calcined at 700 °C for 5 h, in which the presence of copper maximises the Ca3CuMnO6 phase formation. The increase in Cu-content produces a large segregation of CuO despite PVK formation. The best catalyst was tested using industrial gas stream, showing good stability also in the presence of H2O and O2 (8% v/v ) after 1400 h on-stream. To increase surface area, Cu-containing PVKs were deposed on γ-Al2O3 and CeO2–ZrO2, and this latter has been recognised as the best support. Indeed, the activity of the PVKs supported on ceria–zirconia is comparable to and even better than that of the bulk catalysts. A possible explanation regards the support contribution in terms of activity and/or promotion of O2 mobility which enhances the overall activity of the catalyst.

Vanadium oxides supported on γ-Al2O3, SiO2, TiO2, and ZrO2 were studied on their molecular structures and reactive performances for soot combustion. To investigate the effect of different alkali metals on the structures and reactivities of supported-vanadium oxide catalysts, they were doped into the V4/TiO2 catalyst which had the best intrinsic activity for soot combustion in the selected supported vanadium oxide catalysts. The experimental results demonstrated that the catalytic properties of these catalysts depended on the vanadium loading amount, support nature, and the presence or the absence of alkali metals. The spectroscopic analysis (FT-IR and UV–vis) and H2-TPR results revealed that the higher activity of alkali-promoted vanadium oxide catalysts could be related to the ability of alkali metal promoting the redox cycle of the active vanadyl species. TG results showed that adding alkali to Vm/TiO2 catalyst was beneficial to lowering their melting points. Low melting points could ensure the good surface atom migration ability, which would improve the contact between the catalyst and soot. Due to the alkali metal components promoting the redox ability and the mobility of the catalysts, alkali-modified vanadium oxide catalysts could remarkably improve their catalytic activities for soot combustion. The catalytic activity order for soot combustion followed Li > Na > K > Rb > Cs in the catalyst system of alkali-V4/TiO2, and the reason why it followed this sequence was discussed.

The catalytic autothermal reforming (ATR) of liquid hydrocarbons to provide hydrogen for mobile or stationary fuel cells was carried out over a Ni/Sr/ZrO2 catalyst that is active for steam reforming (SR). The catalyst system was found to be active for the ATR reaction, although the hydrogen concentration obtained by ATR, under the conditions employed, was a little lower than that for SR. Addition of sulfur, introduced in the form of thiophene, reduced the catalytic stability of Ni/Sr/ZrO2, even at 1073 K. The catalyst lifetime decreased with increasing sulfur concentration between 0 and 100 ppm. Additives for improving the sulfur-tolerance of Ni/Sr/ZrO2 were examined, and additions of Re or La were found to be effective in improving the stability of the catalysts. The best catalyst was 5 wt.% Re–Sr/Ni/ZrO2. This catalyst was used in the ATR of liquid hydrocarbon fuels such as commercial premium gasoline, hydrotreated FCC gasoline, reagent mixtures, and methylcyclohexane. For premium gasoline, the activity remained unchanged during 30 h, but then diminished rapidly. With the other fuels, however, the catalyst showed a much improved performance, indicating that the presence of sulfur could be associated with catalyst stability. ATR coupled with the water–gas shift reaction led to a reduction in the CO concentration by up to 2800 ppm. The catalyst's activity remained constant even after cold-start runs with 853–423–853 K temperature cycles under H2O/O2/N2 conditions. Thus, the Re–Sr/Ni/ZrO2 catalyst is effective for ATR of liquid hydrocarbon fuels. Further work is currently under way to extend the catalyst life.

The influence of the ZrO2 support modification by Y2O3 and the presence of ethylenediamine (“en”) during the preparation of Co/ZrO2 were studied and compared with a reference catalyst conventionally prepared by impregnation of ZrO2 with an aqueous solution of Co(NO3)2. The effect of the en/Co molar ratio (x = 1–3) was studied. Activation of cobalt species was followed by differential thermal and thermogravimetric analyses (DTA/TG) analyses and by specific surface area measurements which evidence the complete cobalt precursor decomposition at 450 °C, whatever the support composition and the en/Co molar ratio. The addition of an aqueous solution of ethylenediamine to a cobalt nitrate solution led to a strong increase in the catalytic activity of the activated solids for the toluene deep oxidation as compared to the reference catalyst. The best catalytic results were explained in terms of cobalt oxides dispersion (X-ray diffraction (XRD)) and also in terms of Co-support interaction (H2-temperature-programmed reduction (TPR)). The generated cobalt species were reducible at much lower temperatures and were more active in the toluene total oxidation. Finally, an efficient catalyst was produced combining the modifications of the support by yttrium oxide and of the precursor (use of ethylenediamine).

Catalytic wet air oxidation (CWAO) of aqueous solution of acetic acid (78 mmol L−1) was carried out with pure oxygen (2 MPa) at 200 °C in a stirred batch reactor on platinum supported oxide catalysts (Pt/oxide, oxide = CeO2, Zr0.1Ce0.9O2, Zr0.1(Ce0.75Pr0.25)0.9O2 and ZrO2). Platinum was loaded on oxides by impregnation (5 wt%), and then the catalysts were reduced under H2. Homogenous dispersions of 2–3 nm metal crystallites were obtained. The catalytic activity depended on the ability of the support to resist to the formation of carbonates. Ce(CO3)OH species, determined by FT-IR and XRD, were rapidly formed during the CWAO reaction especially on mixed oxides. These carbonates were responsible to a drastic drop in catalytic performances. Amounts of carbonate species increase with the ability of the catalyst to transfer oxygen.

Niobia and alumina supported palladium catalyst promoted by copper were investigated in the reaction of nitrate catalytic reduction in water and characterized by temperature programmed reduction, physisorption, H2 chemisorption and X-ray diffraction. Niobia supported Pd–Cu catalysts were as active and selective as an alumina supported catalyst. All catalysts had similar turnover frequencies independent of the support. The control of pH and the interaction between Pd and Cu were critical to improving the selectivity and activity of Pd–Cu/Nb2O5 catalysts.

Pt/ZrO2 and Pt/Ce0.14Zr0.86O2 catalysts containing 0.5 and 1.5 wt.% Pt were studied in order to evaluate the effect of the support reducibility and metal dispersion on the catalyst stability for the partial oxidation and the combined partial oxidation and CO2 reforming of methane. The Pt/Ce0.14Zr0.86O2 catalysts proved to be more active, stable and selective than Pt/ZrO2 catalysts during the partial oxidation reaction. No increase in deactivation was observed when the CH4:O2 feed ratio was increased from 2:1 to 4:1. In addition, no water formation was observed at the high CH4:O2 ratios. The activity of the catalyst is dependent upon both the dispersion and the ability of the catalyst to resist carbon deposition.

The addition of CO2 resulted in a decrease in the methane conversion and a decrease in the H2/CO ratio for the Ce0.14Zr0.86O2 and ZrO2 supported catalysts. Small increases in the temperature of the bed have been recorded during the partial oxidation reaction. However, within a few minutes the temperature stabilizes below the furnace temperature providing indirect evidence for the combined combustion and reforming mechanisms previously proposed. The 1.5 wt.% Pt/CeZrO2 catalyst shows promise for the autothermal reforming reaction based on the stability during transient operation.

The NiSO4 supported on Fe2O3-promoted ZrO2 catalysts were prepared by the impregnation method. Fe2O3-promoted ZrO2 was prepared by the coprecipitation method using a mixed aqueous solution of zirconium oxychloride and iron nitrate solution followed by adding an aqueous ammonia solution. No diffraction line of nickel sulfate was observed up to 20 wt.%, indicating good dispersion of nickel sulfate on the surface of Fe2O3–ZrO2. The addition of nickel sulfate (or Fe2O3) to ZrO2 shifted the phase transition of ZrO2 (from amorphous to tetragonal) to higher temperatures because of the interaction between nickel sulfate (or Fe2O3) and ZrO2. 15-NiSO4/5-Fe2O3–ZrO2 containing 15 wt.% NiSO4 and 5 mol% Fe2O3, and calcined at 500 °C exhibited a maximum catalytic activity for ethylene dimerization. NiSO4/Fe2O3–ZrO2 catalysts was very effective for ethylene dimerization even at room temperature, but Fe2O3–ZrO2 without NiSO4 did not exhibit any catalytic activity at all. The catalytic activities were correlated with the acidity of catalysts measured by the ammonia chemisorption method. The addition of Fe2O3 up to 5 mol% enhanced the acidity, surface area, thermal property, and catalytic activities of catalysts gradually, due to the interaction between Fe2O3 and ZrO2 and due to consequent formation of Fe–O–Zr bond.

Nanocomposite Ni/ZrO2-AN catalyst consisting of comparably sized Ni metal and ZrO2 nanoparticles is studied in comparison with zirconia- and alumina-supported Ni catalysts (Ni/ZrO2-CP and commercial Ni/Al2O3-C) for steam reforming of methane (SRM) and for combined steam and CO2 reforming of methane (CSCRM). The reactions are performed under atmospheric pressure with stoichiometric amounts of H2O and CH4 or (H2O + CO2) and CH4 at 1073 K. Under a wide range of methane space velocity (gas hourly space velocity of methane GHSVCH4 = 12,000–96,000 ml/(h gcat.), the nanocomposite Ni/ZrO2-AN catalyst always shows higher activity and stability for both SRM and CSCRM reactions. The two supported Ni catalysts (Ni/ZrO2-CP and Ni/Al2O3-C) exhibit fairly stable catalysis under low GHSVCH4 but they are easily deactivated under high GHSVCH4 and become completely inactive when they are reacted for ca.100 h at GHSVCH4 = 48,000 ml/(h gcat.). The CSCRM reaction is carried out with different H2O/CO2 ratios in the reaction feed while keeping the molar ratio (H2O + CO2)/CH4 = 1.0, the results prove that the nanocomposite Ni/ZrO2-AN catalyst can be highly promising in enabling a catalytic technology for the production of syngas with flexible H2/CO ratios (ca. H2/CO = 1.0–3.0) to meet the requirements of various downstream chemical syntheses.

Mesoporous ZrO2 with high surface area and uniform pore size distribution, synthesized by surfactant templating through a neutral [C13(EO)6–Zr(OC3H7)4] assembly pathway, was used as a support of gold catalysts prepared by deposition–precipitation method. The supports and the catalysts were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, N2 adsorption analysis, temperature programmed reduction and desorption. The catalytic activity of gold supported on mesoporous zirconia was evaluated in water–gas shift (WGS) reaction at wide temperature range (140–300 °C) and at different space velocities and H2O/CO ratios. The catalytic behaviour and the reasons for а reversible deactivation of Au/mesoporous zirconia catalysts were studied. The influence of gold content and particle size on the catalytic performance was investigated. The WGS activity of the new Au/mesoporous zirconia catalyst was compared to the reference Au/TiO2 type A (World Gold Council), revealing significantly higher catalytic activity of Au/mesoporous zirconia catalyst. It is found that the mesoporous zirconia is a very efficient support of gold-based catalyst for the WGS reaction.

ZrO2–TiO2 mixed oxide (30–70 mol/mol) was prepared by low-temperature sol–gel followed by solvo-thermal treatment (1 day) at various temperatures (40, 80, 120, 160 and 200 °C). Selected samples of the corresponding single oxides were also prepared. Materials characterization was carried out by N2 physisorption, XRD, thermal analysis (TG-DTA) and UV–vis DRS, infra-red and Laser-Raman spectroscopies. Binary solids of enhanced pore volume and pore size diameter were obtained by increasing the post-treatment severity. Anatase TiO2 micro-segregation was evidenced by Raman spectroscopy for the mixed oxide solvo-treated at the highest temperature. This solid also showed the highest crystallization temperature to ZrTiO4 (702 °C). Mo impregnated (2.8 atom nm−2) on various mixed oxides was sulfided under H2S/H2 (400 °C, 1 h), the catalysts being tested in the dibenzothiophene hydrodesulfurization (HDS, T = 320 °C, P = 5.59 MPa). By increasing the severity of the solvo-treatment improved supports for MoS2 phase were obtained. The HDS activity of the catalyst with carrier post-treated at 200 °C was 40% higher (in per total mass basis) than that of sulfided Mo supported on the binary oxide solvo-treated at 80 °C. The ZrO2–TiO2-supported catalysts showed higher selectivity to products from the hydrogenation route than their counterparts supported on either single oxide.

A series of calcium-modified alumina-supported cobalt catalysts were prepared with a two-step impregnation method, and the effect of calcium on the catalytic performances of the catalysts for the partial oxidation of methane to syngas (CO and H2) was investigated at 750 °C. Also, the catalysts were characterized by XRD, TEM, TPR and (in situ) Raman. At 6 wt.% of cobalt loading, the unmodified alumina-supported cobalt catalyst showed a very low activity and a rapid deactivation, while the calcium-modified catalyst presented a good performance for this process with the CH4 conversion of 88%, CO selectivity of 94% and undetectable carbon deposition during a long-time running. Characterization results showed that the calcium modification can effectively increase the dispersion and reducibility of Co3O4, decrease the Co metal particle size, and suppress the reoxidation of cobalt as well as the phase transformation to form CoAl2O4 spinel phases under the reaction conditions. These could be related to the excellent catalytic performances of Co/Ca/Al2O3 catalysts.
