A paste comprising fine alumina particles was applied on surfaces of steel plate specimens and a welded joint specimen, and the effects of the paste on restraint and visual detection of fatigue crack growth were experimentally investigated by performing fatigue tests with in situ observations by a c harge c oupled d evice (CCD) microscope and through various kinds of fractographic observations and elemental analyses using an scanning electron microscope (SEM) and an electron probe microanalyser (EPMA). As a result, the crack growth rate in the plate specimen was drastically retarded by the wedge effect of the alumina particles, and a 311% increase in failure life was produced on an average. The restraint of crack opening displacement (COD) value by the wedge materials was estimated by elastic finite element (FE) analyses, and the results were compared with the experimental data. Similar crack growth restraint effects were also observed on the welded joint specimen, producing a 117% increase in failure life. In the fatigue tests of the specimens on which the alumina paste was applied, a remarkable black colour developed in the white alumina paste along the paths of crack propagation, facilitating the visual detection of the cracks. An analysis using an X‐ray diffractometer showed that the black matter in the paste consists of fine debris derived from the base metal.  相似文献

Fatigue growth of short cracks in Ti-17: Experiments and simulations   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The fatigue behaviour of through thickness short cracks was investigated in Ti-17. Experiments were performed on a symmetric four-point bend set-up. An initial through thickness crack was produced by cyclic compressive load on a sharp notch. The notch and part of the crack were removed leaving an approximately 50 μm short crack. The short crack was subjected to fatigue loading in tension. The experiments were conducted in load control with constant force amplitude and mean values. Fatigue growth of the short cracks was monitored with direct current potential drop measurements. Fatigue growth continued at constant R-ratio into the long crack regime. It was found that linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) was applicable if closure-free long crack growth data from constant KImax test were used. Then, the standard Paris’ relation provided an upper bound for the growth rates of both short and long crack.The short crack experiments were numerically reproduced in two ways by finite element computations. The first analysis type comprised all three phases of the experimental procedure: precracking, notch removal and fatigue growth. The second analysis type only reproduced the growth of short cracks during fatigue loading in tension. In both cases the material model was elastic-plastic with combined isotropic and kinematic hardening. The agreement between crack tip opening displacement range, cyclic J-integral and cyclic plastic zone at the crack tip with ΔKI verified that LEFM could be extended to the present short cracks in Ti-17. Also, the crack size limits described in the literature for LEFM with regards to plastic zone size hold for the present short cracks and cyclic softening material.  相似文献

In this paper, the small fatigue crack behavior of titanium alloy TC4 at different stress ratios was investigated. Single‐edge‐notch tension specimens were fatigued axially under a nominal maximum stress of 370 MPa at room temperature. Results indicate that fatigue cracks in TC4 initiate from the interface between α and β phases or within α phase. More than 90% of the total fatigue life is consumed in the small crack initiation and growth stages. The crack growth process of TC4 can be divided into three typical stages, ie, microstructurally small crack stage, physically small crack stage, and long crack stage. Although the stress ratio has a significant effect on the total fatigue life and crack initiation life at constant σmax, its effect on crack growth rate is indistinguishable at R = ?0.1, 0.1, and 0.3 when crack growth rate is plotted as a function of ?K.  相似文献

The influence of phases with different morphology and mechanical properties on fatigue crack growth behavior in nickel aluminum bronze (NAB) has been investigated. Annealing at 675 °C and normalizing at 920 °C heat treatments were used to produce different morphologies and fractions of second phases. This analysis shows that the coarse dendritic κII particles and κIII lamellae as hard brittle phases in as-cast and annealed NAB have an accelerative effect on the fatigue crack propagation where by cracks propagate through α and κIIIII interface. Fatigue cracks in normalized NAB prefer to propagate through the ductile α grains, form fatigue striations and have the lowest crack growth rate. The uniformly distributed, fine κIV precipitates in the α grains improves fatigue crack growth resistance. This work identifies the role of NAB second phases on propagation of fatigue cracks, and provides suitable heat treatment for improving fatigue crack resistance in terms of controlling second phase type, distribution and percentage.  相似文献

ABSTRACT The fatigue crack growth behaviour of 0.47% carbon steel was studied under mode II and III loadings. Mode II fatigue crack growth tests were carried out using specially designed double cantilever (DC) type specimens in order to measure the mode II threshold stress intensity factor range, ΔKIIth. The relationship ΔKIIth > ΔKIth caused crack branching from mode II to I after a crack reached the mode II threshold. Torsion fatigue tests on circumferentially cracked specimens were carried out to study the mechanisms of both mode III crack growth and of the formation of the factory‐roof crack surface morphology. A change in microstructure occurred at a crack tip during crack growth in both mode II and mode III shear cracks. It is presumed that the crack growth mechanisms in mode II and in mode III are essentially the same. Detailed fractographic investigation showed that factory‐roofs were formed by crack branching into mode I. Crack branching started from small semi‐elliptical cracks nucleated by shear at the tip of the original circumferential crack.  相似文献

Surface replication method was utilized to monitor the small fatigue crack initiation and growth process of single‐edge‐notch tension specimens fabricated by nickel base superalloy GH4169. Three different stress levels were selected. Results showed that small fatigue cracks of nickel base superalloy GH4169 initiated from grain boundaries or surface inclusions. The small fatigue crack initiation and growth stages took up about 80–90% of the total fatigue life. Multiple major cracks were observed in the notch root, and specimen with more major cracks seemed to have smaller fatigue life under the same test conditions. At the early growth stage, small crack behaviour might be strongly influenced by microstructures; thus, the crack growth rates had high fluctuations. However, the stress level effect on the small fatigue crack growth rates was not distinguishable for the three different stress levels. And no clear differences were found among the crack initiation lives by using replication technique.  相似文献

Prediction model for the growth rates of short cracks based on Kmax‐constant tests with M(T) specimens The fatigue crack growth behaviour of short corner cracks in the Aluminium alloys Al 6013‐T6 and Al 2524‐T351 was investigated. The aim was to determine the crack growth rates of small corner cracks at stress ratios of R = 0.1, R = 0.7 and R = 0.8 and to develop a method to predict these crack growth rates from fatigue crack growth curves determined for long cracks. Corner cracks were introduced into short crack specimens, similar to M(T)‐specimens, at one side of a hole (Ø = 4.8 mm) by cyclic compression (R = 20). The pre‐cracks were smaller than 100 μm (notch + precrack). A completely new method was used to cut very small notches (10–50 μm) into the specimens with a Focussed Ion Beam. The results of the fatigue crack growth tests with short corner cracks were compared with long fatigue crack growth test data. The short cracks grew at ΔK‐values below the threshold for long cracks at the same stress ratio. They also grew faster than long cracks at the same ΔK‐values and the same stress ratios. A model was developed on the basis of Kmax‐constant tests with long cracks that gives a good and conservative prediction of the short crack growth rates.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Both experimental and analytical investigations were conducted to study crack initiation and growth of small cracks, near‐threshold growth behavior of large cracks at constant R‐ratio/decreasing ΔK and constant Kmax/decreasing ΔK, respectively, for 9310 steel. The results showed that a pronounced small‐crack effect was not observed even at R = ?1, small cracks initiated by a slip mechanism at strong slip sites. Worst‐case near‐threshold testing results for large cracks under several Kmax values showed that an effect of Kmax on the near‐threshold behavior does not exist in the present investigation. A worst‐case near‐threshold test for a large crack, i.e. constant Kmax/decreasing ΔK test, can give a conservative prediction of growth behavior of naturally initiated small cracks. Using the worst‐case near‐threshold data for a large crack and crack‐tip constraint factor equations defined in the paper, Newman's total fatigue‐life prediction method was improved. The fatigue lives predicted by the improved method were in reasonable agreement with the experiments. A three‐dimensional (3D) weight function method was used to calculate stress‐intensity factors for a surface crack at a notch of the present SENT specimen (with r/w = 1/8) by using a finite‐element reference solution. The results were verified by limited finite‐element solutions, and agreed well with those calculated by Newman's stress‐intensity factor equations when the stress concentration factor of the present specimen was used in the equations.  相似文献

The fatigue crack growth properties of friction stir welded joints of 2024‐T3 aluminium alloy have been studied under constant load amplitude (increasing‐ΔK), with special emphasis on the residual stress (inverse weight function) effects on longitudinal and transverse crack growth rate predictions (Glinka's method). In general, welded joints were more resistant to longitudinally growing fatigue cracks than the parent material at threshold ΔK values, when beneficial thermal residual stresses decelerated crack growth rate, while the opposite behaviour was observed next to KC instability, basically due to monotonic fracture modes intercepting fatigue crack growth in weld microstructures. As a result, fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR) predictions were conservative at lower propagation rates and non‐conservative for faster cracks. Regarding transverse cracks, intense compressive residual stresses rendered welded plates more fatigue resistant than neat parent plate. However, once the crack tip entered the more brittle weld region substantial acceleration of FCGR occurred due to operative monotonic tensile modes of fracture, leading to non‐conservative crack growth rate predictions next to KC instability. At threshold ΔK values non‐conservative predictions values resulted from residual stress relaxation. Improvements on predicted FCGR values were strongly dependent on how the progressive plastic relaxation of the residual stress field was considered.  相似文献

Fatigue crack growth behaviours of the titanium alloy Ti‐6Al‐4V, with two different microstructures, at different maximum stresses were identified by digital image correlation technique. Full‐field strains were monitored around fatigue cracks after consecutive cycles in fatigue crack growth experiments. Results indicated that the Ti‐6Al‐4V alloy with a bi‐modal microstructure had a better fatigue resistance than that with a primary‐α microstructure. Typical behaviours of small cracks and the evolution of multi‐scale fatigue cracks were clarified. The strain accumulations around the micro‐notch and fatigue crack increased with increasing number of load cycles. On the basis of von Mises strain mapping, it was found that crack growth rate could be characterized by crack‐tip plastic zone size.  相似文献

Axial fatigue tests have been performed at three different stress ratios, R, of ?1, 0 and 0.4 using smooth specimens of an aluminium alloy composite reinforced with SiC particulates of 20 μm particle size. The effect of stress ratio on fatigue strength was studied on the basis of crack initiation, small crack growth and fracture surface analysis. The stress ratio dependence of fatigue strength that has been commonly observed in other materials was obtained, in which fatigue strength decreased with increasing stress ratio when characterized in terms of stress amplitude. At R=?1, the fatigue strength of the SiCp/Al composite was the same as that of the unreinforced alloy, but at R= 0 and 0.4 decreased significantly, indicating a detrimental effect of tensile mean stress in the SiCp/Al composite. The modified Goodman relation gave a fairly good estimation of the fatigue strength at 107 cycles in the unreinforced alloy, but significantly unconservative estimation in the SiCp/Al composite. At R= 0 and 0.4, cracks initiated at the interfaces between SiC particles and the matrix or due to particle cracking and then grew predominantly along the interfaces, because debonding between SiC particles and the matrix occurred easily under tensile mean stress. Such behaviour was different from that at R=?1. Therefore, it was concluded that the decrease in fatigue strength at high stress ratios and the observed stress ratio dependence in the SiCp/Al composite were attributed to the different fracture mechanisms operated at high stress ratios.  相似文献

Small internal fatigue cracks initiated in Ti‐6Al‐4V in the very high cycle regime were detected by synchrotron radiation microcomputed tomography (SR‐μCT) at SPring‐8 in Japan. The initiation and growth behaviours of the cracks were nondestructively observed, and the da/dNΔK relationship was measured and compared with that obtained in a high vacuum environment. SR‐μCT revealed that more than 20 cracks were initiated in one specimen. The crack initiation life varied widely from 20% to 70% of the average fatigue life and had little influence on the growth behaviour that followed. The initiation site size of each internal crack detected in one specimen was comparable with the size of the fracture origins obtained in ordinary fatigue tests. These results suggest that the surrounding microstructures around the initiation site are likely a dominant factor on the internal fracture rather than the potential initiation site itself. The internal crack growth rates were lower than 10?10 m/cycle, and extremely slow rates ranging from 10?13 to 10?11 m/cycle were measured in a lower ΔK regime below 5 MPa√m. The internal crack growth rate closely matched that of surface cracks in a high vacuum, and the reason for the very long life of internal fatigue fractures was believed to result from the vacuum‐like environment inside the internal cracks.  相似文献

This paper proposes a local stress concept to evaluate the fretting fatigue limit for contact edge cracks. A unique S–N curve based on the local stress could be obtained for a contact edge crack irrespective of mechanical factors such as contact pressure, relative slip, contact length, specimen size and loading type. The analytical background for the local stress concept was studied using FEM analysis. It was shown that the local stress uniquely determined the ΔK change due to crack growth as well as the stress distribution near the contact edge. The condition that determined the fretting fatigue limit was predicted by combining the ΔK change due to crack growth and the ΔKth for a short crack. The formation of a non‐propagating crack at the fatigue limit was predicted by the model and it was experimentally confirmed by a long‐life fretting fatigue test.  相似文献

Rubber components subjected to fluctuating loads often fail due to nucleation and the growth of defects or cracks. The prevention of such failures depends upon an understanding of the mechanics underlying the failure process. This investigation explores the nucleation and growth of cracks in filled natural rubber. Both fatigue macro‐crack nucleation as well as fatigue crack growth experiments were conducted using simple tension and planar tension specimens, respectively. Crack nucleation as well as crack growth life prediction analysis approaches were used to correlate the experimental data. Several aspects of the fatigue process, such as failure mode and the effects of R ratio (minimum strain) on fatigue life, are also discussed. It is shown that a small positive R ratio can have a significant beneficial effect on fatigue life and crack growth rate, particularly at low strain range.  相似文献

The influence of low-temperature gaseous carburisation on notch fatigue behaviour of 316L steel under cyclic axial loading was investigated. After carburisation, the carburised case was well distributed at the surface region and was not influenced by the notch geometry. Low-temperature carburisation considerably enhanced the notch fatigue performance, which led to 32% and 44% increase in the endurance limits for the specimens with stress concentration factors K t?=?1.91 and 3.91, respectively. The notch sensitivity of 316L steel reduced after carburisation. Irrespective of the applied stress amplitude, the fatigue crack nucleation sites were always at the notch root surface for the untreated specimens. For the carburised specimens, fatigue cracks nucleation changed from surface at high-level stress to subsurface at low-level stress.  相似文献

Heavy components of ductile cast iron frequently exhibit metallurgical defects that behave like cracks under cyclic loading. Thus, in order to decide whether a given defect is permissible, it is important to establish the fatigue crack growth properties of the material. In this paper, results from a comprehensive study of ductile cast iron EN‐GJS‐400‐18‐LT have been reported. Growth rates of fatigue cracks ranging from a few tenths of a millimetre (‘short’ cracks) to several millimetres (‘long’ cracks) have been measured for load ratios R=?1, R= 0 and R= 0.5 using a highly sensitive potential‐drop technique. Short cracks were observed to grow faster than long cracks. The threshold stress intensity range, ΔKth, as a function of the load ratio was fitted to a simple crack closure model. Fatigue crack growth data were compared with data from other laboratories. Single plain fatigue tests at R=?1 and R= 0 were also carried out. Fracture toughness was measured at temperatures ranging from ?40 °C to room temperature.  相似文献

The opening stresses of a crack emanating from an edge notch in a 1045 quenched and tempered steel specimen were measured under two different Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) standard service load histories having different average mean stress levels. The two spectra are the Grapple Skidder history (GSH), which has a positive average mean stress, and the Log Skidder history (LSH), which has a zero average mean stress. To capture the behaviour of the crack opening stress in the material, the crack opening stress levels were measured at 900X using an optical video microscope, at frequent intervals for each set of histories scaled to two different maximum stress ranges.A crack growth analysis based on a fracture mechanics approach was used to model the fatigue behaviour of the steel specimens for the given load spectra and stress ranges. Crack growth analysis was based on an effective strain‐based intensity factor, a crack growth rate curve obtained during closure‐free loading cycles and a local notch strain calculation based on Neuber's rule.The crack opening stress (Sop) was modelled and the model was implemented in a fatigue notch model, and the fatigue lives of the specimens under the two different spectra scaled to several maximum stress levels were estimated. The average measured crack opening stresses were between 6 and 12% of the average calculated crack opening stresses. In the interest of simplifying the use of Sop in design, the average Sop was correlated with the frequency of occurrence of the cycle reducing the Sop to the average crack opening stress level. The use of an Sop level corresponding to the cycle causing a reduction in Sop to a level reached once per 10 cycles gave a conservative estimate of average crack opening stress for all the histories.  相似文献

The fatigue cracks growth rate of a forged HSLA steel (AISI 4130) was investigated using thin single edge notch tensile specimen to simulate the crack development on a diesel train crankshafts. The effect of load ratio, R, was investigated at room temperature. Fatigue fracture surfaces were examined by scanning electron microscopy. An approach based on the crack tip opening displacement range (ΔCTOD) was proposed as fatigue crack propagation criterion. ΔCTOD measurements were carried out using 2D‐digital image correlation techniques. J‐integral values were estimated using ΔCTOD. Under test conditions investigated, it was found that the use of ΔCTOD as a fatigue crack growth driving force parameter is relevant and could describe the crack propagation behaviour, under different load ratio R.  相似文献

GH4169 at 650 °C in atmosphere was investigated by using single edge notch tensile specimens. The number of main cracks and crack initiation mechanisms at the notch surface strongly depended on the grain size. The crack initiation life accounted for more percentages of the total fatigue life for the alloy with smaller grain size. The fatigue life generally increased with increasing crack initiation life. The small crack transited to long crack when its length reached ˜10 times the grain size.  相似文献
