In order to study the effects of the rolling friction of the particles on granular packing, we present a detailed analysis of circular disk assemblies with the rolling friction under macroscopic one-dimensional compression. The rolling friction of the particles produces a resisting moment to the rolling at each contact. A series of 2-D DEM simulations are performed with various values for the rolling friction parameter. We focus on several macroscopic and microstructural properties of granular media and analyze them as a functions of the rolling friction. From these results, we show that the rolling resistance, which results from the rolling friction of the particles, contributes to the inhibition of the rearrangement of the particles and increases the magnitude of the fabric anisotropy under packing. In addition, from both microscopic and macroscopic points of view, we describe that the stress state in a granular packing can vary considerably depending on the rolling resistance.  相似文献

We are interested in an optimal packing density problem for material flows on conveyor belts in two spatial dimensions. The control problem is concerned with the initial configuration of parts on the belt to ensure a high overall flow rate and to further reduce congestion. An adjoint approach is used to compare the optimization results from the microscopic model based on a system of ordinary differential equations with the corresponding macroscopic model relying on a hyperbolic conservation law. Computational results highlight similarities and differences of both optimization models and emphasize the benefits of the macroscopic approach.  相似文献

The three-dimensional velocity field and corresponding hydrodynamic dispersion in electrokinetic flow through a random bulk packing of impermeable, nonconducting spheres are studied by quantitative numerical analysis. First, a fixed bed with interparticle porosity of 0.38 is generated using a parallel collective-rearrangement algorithm. Then, the interparticle velocity field is calculated using the lattice-Boltzmann (LB) method, and a random-walk particle-tracking method is finally employed to model advection-diffusion of an inert tracer in the LB velocity field. We demonstrate that the pore-scale velocity profile for electroosmotic flow (EOF) is nonuniform even under most ideal conditions, including a negligible thickness of the electrical double layer compared to the mean pore size, a uniform distribution of the electrokinetic potential at the solid-liquid interface, and the absence of applied pressure gradients. This EOF dynamics is caused by a nonuniform distribution of the local electrical field strength in the sphere packing and engenders significant hydrodynamic dispersion compared to pluglike EOF through a single straight channel. Both transient and asymptotic dispersion behaviors are analyzed for EOF in the context of packing microstructure and are compared to pressure-driven flow in dependence of the average velocity through the bed. A better hydrodynamic performance of EOF originates in a still much smaller amplitude of velocity fluctuations on a mesoscopic scale (covering several particle diameters), as well as on the microscopic scale of an individual pore.  相似文献

We investigated inhomogeneity in ice slurry, which can pose problems such as sudden increase in pressure drop and blockages in flow. Although in many previous studies fully dispersed ice slurry flow is assumed homogeneous, inhomogeneity appears as a variation in physical properties in the actual measurements. From experiments, it was found that the fluctuation in pressure drop is relatively small at the beginning, but becomes larger after long-term periods. Additionally, the ice particle size included in the ice slurry also affects this fluctuation. We supposed the fluctuation is caused by the variation in IPF, because it appears only in laminar flow. This implies ice slurry is not homogeneous after long flow periods. From the present study, the variation of IPF was estimated to be 2.6 wt% at maximum. Although the physical mechanism of the variation in IPF has not been clarified, we suggest that it is a consequence of the accumulation/adhesion of ice particles in the pipe.  相似文献

In this article, a recently proposed three-dimensional open-dimension rectangular packing problem is considered, in which the objective is to find a minimal volume rectangular container that packs a set of rectangular boxes. The literature has tackled small-sized instances of this problem by means of optimization solvers, position-free mixed-integer programming (MIP) formulations and piecewise linearization approaches. In this study, the problem is alternatively addressed by means of grid-based position MIP formulations, whereas still considering optimization solvers and the same piecewise linearization techniques. A comparison of the computational performance of both models is then presented, when tested with benchmark problem instances and with new instances, and it is shown that the grid-based position MIP formulation can be competitive, depending on the characteristics of the instances. The grid-based position MIP formulation is also embedded with real-world practical constraints, such as cargo stability, and results are additionally presented.  相似文献
