Austenitic stainless steels are widely used in medical and food industries because of their excellent corrosion resistance. However, they suffer from weak wear resistance due to their low hardness. To improve this, plasma nitriding processes have been successfully applied to austenitic stainless steels, thereby forming a thin and very hard diffusion layer, the so‐called S‐phase. In the present study, the austenitic stainless steels AISI 304L and AISI 316L with different microstructures and surface modifications were used to examine the influence of the steel microstructure on the plasma nitriding behavior and corrosion properties. In a first step, solution annealed steel plates were cold‐rolled with 38% deformation degree. Then, the samples were prepared with three kinds of mechanical surface treatments. The specimens were plasma nitrided for 360 min in a H2–N2 atmosphere at 420 °C. X‐ray diffraction measurements confirmed the presence of the S‐phase at the sample surface, austenite and body centered cubic (bcc)‐iron. The specimens were comprehensively characterized by means of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction, surface roughness and nano‐indentation measurements to provide the formulation of dependencies between microstructure and nitriding behavior. The corrosion behavior was examined by potentio‐dynamic polarization measurements in 0.05 M and 0.5 M sulfuric acid and by salt spray testing.  相似文献

In this paper an effort has been made to plasma nitride the ball bearing steel AISI 52100. The difficulty with this specific steel is that its tempering temperature (~170–200°C) is much lower than the standard processing temperature (~460–580°C) needed for the plasma nitriding treatment. To understand the mechanism, effect of heat treatment on the nitrided layer steel is investigated. Experiments are performed on three different types of ball bearing races i.e. annealed, quenched and quench-tempered samples. Different gas compositions and process temperatures are maintained while nitriding these samples. In the quenched and quench-tempered samples, the surface hardness has decreased after plasma nitriding process. Plasma nitriding of annealed sample with argon and nitrogen gas mixture gives higher hardness in comparison to the hydrogen–nitrogen gas mixture. It is reported that the later heat treatment of the plasma nitrided annealed sample has shown improvement in the hardness of this steel. X-ray diffraction analysis shows that the dominant phases in the plasma nitrided annealed sample are ε (Fe2 − 3N) and γ (Fe4N), whereas in the plasma nitrided annealed sample with later heat treatment only α-Fe peak occurs.  相似文献

In the present work the corrosion susceptibility of ion nitrided AISI 316L stainless steel was investigated for two different nitriding times and compared with the corrosion susceptibility of the untreated material. Plasma nitriding for short times (30 min) produced the “S” phase or expanded austenite (γN), with a thickness of ∼ 5 μm and a micro-hardness of 1300-1400 HV0.025 (6.5 times higher than the untreated material). Plasma nitriding for long times (6 h) resulted in the precipitation of iron and chromium nitrides. To evaluate the corrosion resistance of both untreated and nitrided samples, anodic potentiodynamic polarization curves and immersion tests were performed in 1 M NaCl at room temperature. It was found that the corrosion resistance depends on the nitriding time. Samples nitrided for half an hour developed a much better corrosion resistance - close to that observed in the untreated samples - than those nitrided for 6 h. Samples nitrided for half an hour showed high roughness probably due to the presence of sliding bands developed in the expanded austenite phase. These sliding bands provide appropriate sites for the developing of the corrosion process. This would explain the results obtained in the corrosion tests. Samples ion nitrided for 6 h showed a severe and massive surface damage due to corrosion.Ion nitriding of AISI 316L stainless steel for short periods of time (30 min in the present case) may be an interesting surface treatment process that efficiently improves the surface hardness of the steel with some reduction in its corrosion resistance.  相似文献

The quenched M50NiL steel was plasma nitrided at 460°C for different time to investigate the effects of the duration time on the microstructure, microhardness and wear resistance of the nitrided layers. The results show that the plasma nitrided layer depth increases with increasing nitriding time. The plasma nitrided layer includes only the diffusion layer without compound layer. The main phases in the nitrided surface layer are nitrogen expended α′-Fe and γ′-Fe4N. The microstructure of the nitrided layer is refined. The wear resistance of the nitrided samples can be improved significantly by plasma nitriding. The sample nitrided for 4?h possesses the highest wear resistance, due to its relatively smooth surface and ultra-fine grains in the nitrided layer.  相似文献

A series of experiments have been conducted on AISI 304 stainless steel using a hollow cathode discharge assisted plasma nitriding apparatus. Specimens were nitrided at high temperatures (520–560 °C) in order to produce nitrogen expanded austenite phase within a short time. The nitrided specimen was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, potentiodynamic polarization and microhardness tester. The corrosion properties of nitrided samples were evaluated using anodic polarization tests in 3.5% NaCl solution. The nitrided layer was shown to consist of nitrogen expanded austenite and possibly a small amount of CrN precipitates and iron nitrides. The results indicated that rapid nitriding assisted hollow cathode discharge not only increased the surface hardness but also improved the corrosion resistance of the untreated substrate.  相似文献

The influence of layer microstructure on the corrosion behavior of plasma nitrided cold work tool steel, of commercial name “DC53”, in 3.5% NaCl solution is reported. The specimens were nitrided at 520 °C for different treatment times using a constant [N2 + H2] gaseous mixture by a DC-pulsed plasma system. The microstructure of the nitrided layers was investigated by optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The corrosion behavior was evaluated by potentiodynamic polarization experiments. The plasma nitriding process considerably improves the corrosion resistance of material in NaCl environment as compared to the unnitrided DC53 steel. The modified surface layer consisting mainly of ε-nitride (Fe2–3N) and a small amount of γ′-nitride (Fe4N) confers this outstanding behavior. The corrosion resistance dependence on specific nitriding processes is reported and the role of the ε-nitride is discussed. In particular, the correlation of pitting current density, density of pits, and volume fraction of ε-nitride with nitriding time is analyzed. The results denote that the most important parameter for controlling the corrosion resistance of the material is the volume fraction of ε-nitride and the nitrided layer thickness. It is expected that a nitrided layer would be thicker and rich in ε-nitride phase to achieve a high corrosion resistance.  相似文献

Apart from titanium, its alloys and CoCrMo alloys, austenitic steels are widely used in medical applications. In order to improve the frictional wear resistance of these steels, they are subjected to various surface treatments such that the good corrosion resistance of the steels is preserved. The paper analyzes the structure and phase composition of AISI 316L steel after subjecting it to low-temperature nitriding and oxynitriding under glow discharge conditions. The treatments produced diffusion-type surface layers composed of nitrogen-expanded austenite (known as the phase S, i.e. supersaturated solution of nitrogen in austenite) with a thin surface layer of chromium nitride (CrN) zone (after nitriding) or chromium oxide (Cr2O3) zone (after oxynitriding). It has been shown that the treatments substantially increase the hardness and frictional wear resistance of the steel without degrading its good corrosion resistance (examined in the Ringer physiological solution at a temperature of 37 °C).  相似文献

In this study, the effect of temperature of post-oxidation process on tribological and corrosion behavior of AISI 316 plasma nitrided stainless steel has been studied. Plasma nitriding was carried out at 450 °C for 5 h with gas mixture of N2/H2 = 1/3. The plasma nitrided samples were post-oxidized for 1 h with gas mixture of O2/H2 = 1/5 at different temperature of 400, 450 and 500 °C. The structural, tribological and corrosion properties were analyzed using XRD, SEM, microhardness testing, pin-on-disk tribotesting and electrochemical polarization. The results indicated that the nitride layer was composed of S-phase. The amount of S-phase decreased as the treatment temperature rose from 400 °C to 500 °C. In addition, it was found that oxidation treatment reduces wear resistance of plasma nitrided sample. It was demonstrated that the corrosion characteristics of the nitrided sample were further improved by post-oxidation treatment. The difference in corrosion resistance is mainly attributed to the thickness of the oxide top layer, which is governed by the post-oxidizing temperature.  相似文献

The biocompatibility of austenitic stainless steels can be improved by means of surface engineering techniques. In the present research it was investigated if low temperature nitrided AISI 316L austenitic stainless steel may be a suitable substrate for bioactive protein coating consisting of collagen-I. The biocompatibility of surface modified alloy was studied using as experimental model endothelial cells (human umbilical vein endothelial cells) in culture. Low temperature nitriding produces modified surface layers consisting mainly of S phase, the supersaturated interstitial solid solution of nitrogen in the austenite lattice, which allows to enhance surface microhardness and corrosion resistance in PBS solution. The nitriding treatment seems to promote the coating with collagen-I, without chemical coupling agents, in respect of the untreated alloy. For biocompatibility studies, proliferation, lactate dehydrogenase levels and secretion of two metalloproteinases (MMP-2 and MMP-9) were determined. Experimental results suggest that the collagen protection may be favourable for endothelial cell proliferation and for the control of MMP-2 release.  相似文献

Newly developed low-temperature nitride synthesis route was used to introduce interstitial nitrogen into the passive layer of as-received and as-polished 316L stainless steel. The new thermochemical route is based on treating the stainless steel samples in potassium nitrate melt in an ultra pure nitrogen atmosphere at 450 °C. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and dc polarization measurements have been used to evaluate the nitride layer performance in 3.5% NaCl solution. Results showed a marked increase in the corrosion resistance of nitrided stainless steel even after maintaining two weeks in NaCl solution. The effect of the treatment temperature was also studied. Data showed that the as-polished samples nitrided at 450 °C have the highest corrosion resistance. The polarization resistance (Rp) for the as-polished and as-received blank stainless steel samples was estimated by EIS were approximately 4.0 × 104 Ω cm2 and 2.0 × 104 Ω cm2, respectively. The Rp increased by a factor of 2.5–5 for the nitrided samples. Increasing the nitriding temperature from 450 to 600 °C affects negatively the corrosion resistance of stainless steel in NaCl solution. The Rp of the samples nitrided at 600 °C decreased sharply being almost 1/30 of the Rp of the samples nitrided at 450 °C. Linear polarization measurements showed that the lowest corrosion rates and highest polarization resistances obtained from the as-polished nitrided samples at 450 °C. It has been found from the potentiodynamic measurements that the Ecorr of the as-polished nitrided samples at 450 °C is nobler than that measured from the other groups. The surface morphology was analysed by optical microscope and SEM-EDS under different nitriding conditions.  相似文献

Cyclic plasma oxynitriding and cyclic plasma nitriding catalyzed by rare earth La of AISI 420 martensitic stainless steel were performed and compared with conventional plasma nitriding. The nitrided layers were investigated by means of an optical microscope, microhardness tester, Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), X-ray diffraction (XRD), wear machine, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The results show that the wear resistance of AISI 420 martensitic stainless steel is improved significantly by the two new rapid and deep plasma nitriding techniques. The new techniques increase the surface hardness of the nitrided layers and make the microhardness profiles gentler, which are consistent with the nitrogen concentration depth profiles. Meanwhile, the nitrided effect improves with increasing cycles. It was also found that the optimum phase compositions of nitrided layers with more γ′ phases and less ? phases for long-term service conditions can be obtained by the two new techniques, which is in agreement with the microstructure. In addition, traces of Fe3O4 were found in the cyclic plasma oxynitrided sample. Combining the SEM and EDS analysis indicated the existence of La in the nitrided layer of the sample under cyclic plasma nitriding catalyzed by rare earth La.  相似文献

Nitriding increases surface hardness and improves wear resistance of stainless steels. However, nitriding can sometimes reduce their corrosion resistance. In this paper, the influence of nitriding on the corrosion resistance of martensitic stainless steel was investigated. Plasma nitriding at 440 °C and 525 °C and salt bath nitrocarburizing were carried out on X17CrNi16‐2 stainless steel. Microhardness profiles of the obtained nitrided layers were examined. Phase composition analysis and quantitative depth profile analysis of the nitrided layers were preformed by X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and glow‐discharge optical emission spectrometry (GD‐OES), respectively. Corrosion behaviour was evaluated by immersion test in 1% HCl, salt spray test in 5% NaCl and electrochemical corrosion tests in 3.5% NaCl aqueous solution. Results show that salt bath nitrocarburizing, as well as plasma nitriding at low temperature, increased microhardness without significantly reducing corrosion resistance. Plasma nitriding at a higher temperature increased the corrosion tendency of the X17CrNi16‐2 steel.  相似文献

In this work, plasma nitriding and plasma nitriding-oxidizing treatment have been performed on AISI 316 austenitic stainless steel. In order to evaluate its response to this treatment, their microstructures and wear resistance have been compared with conventional plasma nitrided. The treatment of plasma nitriding was performed at temperature of 450 °C for 5 h with gas mixture of N2/H2:1/3 whereas plasma nitriding-oxidizing was performed with the same parameters of plasma nitriding and temperature of 450 °C with gas mixture of O2/H2:1/5 for 15, 30 and 60 min. The structural, mechanical and tribological properties were analyzed using XRD, SEM, microhardness testing and pin-on-disk tribotesting. The results showed that oxidation treatment reduces wear resistance of plasma nitrided sample under high loads. Furthermore the tribological evaluation indicates that by increasing the oxidation time further reduction of wear resistance can be occurred. In addition, it was found that oxidation treatment after plasma nitriding provides an important improvement in the friction coefficient against a AISI 52100 steel pin and reduces surface roughness.  相似文献

In the present study, low temperature plasma nitriding of nanocrystallized 18Ni maraging steel has been carried out at 360 °C from 1 to 24 h in a mixed gas of 25%N2 + 75%H2. The surface phase constitutions and microstructures of the nitrided layer have been investigated by X-ray diffraction analysis, transmission electron microscopy and optical microscopy. Nanoindentation and microhardness tests have been performed to determine the surface hardness and the hardness profile in the nitrided layer. The plasticity of the nitrided surface has been analyzed based on the nanoindentation results. The results show that at the initial stage of nitriding, the surface phase consists of a solid solution of nitrogen in α-Fe, and nanoscale nitrides and aging phase are formed with increasing of treatment time. The surfaces nitrided for 8 and 16 h possess the highest hardness. The plasticity factor calculations suggest that the nitrided surfaces have a good wear resistance and possess excellent plasticity.  相似文献

Abstract

Mathematical modelling of matter transmission during gas nitriding has been deduced by a numerical calculation in the present study. The diffusion coefficient of nitrogen in 38CrMoAl steel and the matter transmission coefficent in the interfacial reaction have been measured. Owing to the large difference between the nitrogen activity at the surface of the workpiece and that of the gas phase during the nitriding process, it is very difficult to control the nitrogen potential and balance the nitrogen activity. In order to solve this problem, is it proposed that the nitrogen potential is dynamically controlled by computer. Under conditions of high nitriding speed, the computer controlled technique used in practical manufacture shows good reproducibility and can control the nitrogen potential accurately, thereby reducing the brittleness of the nitrided layer.  相似文献

Gears for structural machines require high fatigue strength for high performance. Generally, gears made of carbon steel easily corrode, thus, shortening their fatigue life. The aim of this paper is to improve the fatigue strength of carbon steel gears by means of heat treatment method which was nitriding composed of 95 % nitrogen gas as well as 5 % hydrogen gas, and to investigate its properties after nitriding. Therefore, in order to find the optimum nitriding temperature to increase the hardness and corrosion resistance of gears, the gas nitriding process was conducted at two different tube furnace temperatures: low (550 °C) and high (1150 °C), both for four hours. Microstructural and mechanical property evaluation of the low and high temperature nitrided low-carbon steel BS970-080A15 were studied and the results were compared to identify which gear had better performance in terms of hardness as well as corrosion resistance. The results from Vickers hardness test and weight loss analysis proved that high temperature nitrided carbon steel is harder and more corrosion resistant than the low temperature one.  相似文献

316L austenitic stainless steel was gas nitrided at 570 °C with pre-shot peening. Shot peening and nitriding are surface treatments that enhance the mechanical properties of surface layers by inducing compressive residual stresses and formation of hard phases, respectively. The structural phases, micro-hardness, wear behavior and corrosion resistance of specimens were investigated by X-ray diffraction, Vickers micro-hardness, wear testing, scanning electron microscopy and cyclic polarization tests. The effects of shot peening on the nitride layer formation and corrosion resistance of specimens were studied. The results showed that shot peening enhanced the nitride layer formation. The shot peened–nitrided specimens had higher wear resistance and hardness than other specimens. On the other hand, although nitriding deteriorated the corrosion resistance of the specimens, cyclic polarization tests showed that shot peening before the nitriding treatment could alleviate this adverse effect.  相似文献

In this paper, we report on a series of experiments designed to study the influence of plasma nitriding on the mechanical properties and the corrosion resistance of austenitic stainless steel. Plasma nitriding experiments were conducted on AISI 304L steel in a temperature range of 375‐475°C using pulsed‐DC plasma with different N 2‐H 2 gas mixtures and treatment times. First of all, the formation and the microstructure of the modified layer will be highlighted followed by the results of hardness measurement, adhesion testing, wear resistance and fatigue life tests. In addition the corrosion resistance of the modified layer is described. The microhardness after plasma nitriding is increased by a factor of five compared to the untreated material. The adhesion is examined by Rockwell indentation and scratch test. No delamination of the treated layer could be observed. The wear rate after plasma nitriding is significantly reduced compared to the untreated material. Plasma nitriding produces compressive stress within the modified layer. This treatment improves the fatigue life which can be raised by a factor of ten at a low stress level. The results show that plasma nitriding of austenitic stainless steel is a suitable process for improving the mechanical and the technological properties without significantly effecting the excellent corrosion resistance of this material.  相似文献

Plasma nitriding of ASTM F138 stainless steel samples has been carried out using dc glow discharge under 80% H2–20% N2 gas mixture, at 673 K, and 2, 4, and 7 h time intervals, in order to investigate the influence of treatment time on the microstructure and the corrosion resistance properties. The samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, glancing angle X-ray diffraction and conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy, besides electrochemical tests in NaCl aerated solution. A modified layer of about 6 μm was observed for all the nitrided samples, independent of nitriding time. The X-ray diffraction analysis shows broad γN phase peaks, signifying a great degree of nitrogen supersaturation. Besides γN, the Mössbauer spectroscopy results indicated the occurrence of γ′ and ε phases, as well as some other less important phases. Corrosion measurements demonstrate that the plasma nitriding time affects the corrosion resistance and the best performance is reached at 4 h treatment. It seems that the ε/γ′ fraction ratio plays an important role on the resistance corrosion. Additionally, the Mössbauer spectroscopy was decisive in this study, since it was able to identify and quantify the iron phases that influence the corrosion resistance of plasma nitrided ASTM F138 samples.  相似文献
