建筑形态学是一个很综合很复杂的课程题目,因为建筑创作是具有一定主观意识的过程,建筑形态的塑造也受到方方面面太多因素的制约。所以研究建筑形态学可以理解为是在研究建筑师在方案创作中所遵循的道理和他或她对于平时大脑中存储的各种事物的形态处理方式。扎哈·哈迪德是当前时代最具有代表性的建筑师,通过分析她最具代表性的作品,来学习建筑形态学的知识。     

The Problem of Scale

Sean Godsell has built an international reputation on designing finely crafted houses in southeast Australia for which he draws all the details by hand. Here he explains how landing the commission for the Design Hub, a new postgraduate design research centre for RMIT in Melbourne, required a shift in scale and also a change in working conditions as he encountered new production processes and levels of regulation. Maintaining the character of the building as something ‘made’ rather than produced was a sustained battle.

The Replanting and Localizing of Chineseness in Whampoa’s Garden of Singapore

Private Chinese gardens in 19th-century Singapore were rarely designed in the same way as their contemporary counterparts in China, though there were a few authentic Chinese mansions in the city. In response to this phenomenon, this paper attempts to use Whampoa’s Garden, the finest and earliest private Chinese garden on the island, as an example, to explain how and why garden owners selectively adopted certain Chinese features while designing the rest of their gardens in a way deviating from Chinese traditions. The study of Whampoa’s Garden begins with a sketchy introduction to the career and cultural background of the garden’s owner, Cantonese businessman Hoo Ah Kay, addressing his social connections, personal hobbies, and cultural identities. As the garden no longer exists, a study of available pictorial and written records from Chinese and Western sources is conducted in order to reveal the spatial layout and other designed features of the garden, some of which may have facilitated the display of Chineseness. Contemporaneous gardens from Hoo’s hometown will be compared to unveil hidden linkages between Whampoa’s Garden and Chinese garden ideas. Furthermore, the relationship between the selection of Chinese symbols and the identities of their audience is examined as an approach to studying what affected how Chineseness was presented and how the landscape of south China was transplanted to this equatorial colony.     

Interoperability in Sports Design

David Hines leads the parametric and advanced geometry group at Populous, the global design practice renowned for its expertise in sports facility design. Here he describes how Populous and Buro Happold created a shared model environment for the Aviva Stadium in Dublin (2010) , enabling a smooth parametric-to-BIM-to fabrication process. A watershed initiative, it provided the prerequisite stepping stone for developing a parametric bowl tool for designing stadia.

The use made of the Michigan 4-H Children's Garden by two groups is considered. Children are the most frequent user group; however, senior citizens are the second most frequent visitor type to use the garden space. Because of this dichotomy in user groups, an examination of the site design from the perspective of a behaviourist and medical practitioner was prompted. An investigation of site features and layout suggests that the underlying principles that were applied in designing the 64 garden teaching areas for children also serve the senior citizens. An explanation of how principles of design have application in the creation of garden spaces for individuals separated by over two generations of age is presented.

Jonathan Kirschenfeld describes how he landed the project of designing a floating public swimming baths for New York City through serendipity and then hauled it in through pure determination. Likewise, it was only through immersing himself in ‘the murky world of real estate’ and collecting vacant sites from brokers, while performing zoning analyses and schematic designs, that he put his practice in line for supportive housing commissions.
