Karl Florien Heiser (1904–1991): Obituary.

On August 27, 1977, at the annual meeting of the APA in San Francisco, the American Psychological Foundation announced the recipients of the Gold Medal Award, the Distinguished Contribution to Education in Psychology Award, and the National Media Awards. The role of the family in the nurture and protection of the young.

U.S. Secretary of Education William J. Bennett discusses the federal government's failure over the past two decades to alter substantially many of the problems facing the nation's youth. He suggests that the family is better able to make decisions regarding the well-being of its young members than is the federal government and that federal policy, therefore, should be concerned primarily in strengthening rather than supplanting the family's influence and authority. Effect of audiorecording and videorecording on client satisfaction and self-expression.

Examined the effects of audiorecording and videorecording for the purpose of counselor supervision on 60 undergraduates with personal or education-vocational problems. Videorecording inhibited the self-exploration of Ss with personal problems and resulted in less satisfaction with counseling. Both recording methods inhibited self-exploration in Ss with educational-vocational problems, but neither method affected their satisfaction. Recording methods also affected Ss' self-reports of the extent to which they felt inhibited by these methods, and the effect was equal across problem types. The effects of recording did not decrease from the 1st-2nd interview. Recording did not affect Ss' responses to, or counselors' ratings of the Ss on, an excitation-inhibition scale. (19 ref.) Across the Secretary's Desk: Sample of Outgoing Mail.

In February, the Executive Secretary hit upon a new and to him a nicely adaptive mechanism for meeting the constantly felt need to let American Psychological Association (APA) members know at least as much as they want to about the operation of their Central Office. He asked the professional staff of the Central Office to look through copies of the last month's correspondence from the Secretary's Audograph to see if they could find material that was (a) of at least mild potential interest to a number of APA members, (b) illustrative of some facet of APA functioning, (c) free of any threat to the privacy of the recipient, and (d) at least moderately literate. Each member of the staff found some material which he was willing, under pressure, to mark as meeting the above criteria. Though the level of reliability was nothing to brag about, the process, abetted by some editorial license, resulted in the following array of sentences and paragraphs from the Executive Secretary's outgoing correspondence for a month or so early in 1955. Report of testimony at a congressional hearing.

Testimony given by Roger W. Russell, Executive Secretary of the APA, and Lee J. Cronbach, immediate past President of APA, to the Senate Committee on Labor and Public Welfare on February 27, 1958 during hearings on legislative proposals affecting science and education is presented. After a brief introduction concerning the APA and its representatives, the need for highly educated persons in the profession was indicated. Other major topics included: The Nature and Identification of Talent, Testing Programs, Motivation of Talented Students, Counseling and Counselor Training, Science Information Service, and Research on Educational Problems. Support is expressed for bill S. 3163 which provides for research in more effective methods of teaching foreign languages and for S. 3187 which provides for an Institute for Research and Experimentation in New Educational Media. "Chance" scores on the Strong Vocational Interest Blank for men.

Strong's estimated chance score ranges on the SVIB scales are compared with the chance variance for most of the scales, computed from the assumption of zero item intercorrelations (obtained when the blank is filled out in all possible ways). "Most of the differences are small, and the positive and negative errors of estimate are about equally divided. The greatest difference is in the Aviator scale, where Strong's estimate is about 1.4 standard score points too high. This difference is significant at the 1% level as judged by the F test.
