The Board for the Advancement of Psychology in the Public Interest presents two awards annually to persons who, in the estimation of the Committee on Psychology in the Public lnterest Awards, have advanced psychology as a science and/or profession by a single extraordinary achievement or a lifetime of outstanding contributions in the public interest. One award is presented to a senior psychologist, and the other recognizes a psychologist who has made a significant contribution to the public interest less than 15 years after the receipt of her or his degree. The winners for 1994 are Robert Q. Pollard and Durand F. Jacobs. Their accomplishments are cited and biographies are provided. The winners since the establishment of the award are also listed. Awards for distinguished professional contributions: Robert D. Weitz.

Presents the citation, biography, and selected bibliography for Robert D. Weitz, this year's (1994) winner of the American Psychological Association's Award for Distinguished Professional Contributions--Distinguished Professional Contributions to Applied Psychology as a Professional Practice. The awards for Distinguished Contributions to Psychology in the Public Interest recognize persons who, in the opinion of the Committee on Psychology in the Public Interest Awards, have advanced psychology as a science and/or profession by a single extraordinary achievement or a lifetime of outstanding contributions in the public interest. These contributions might include the identification or solution of significant social problems; unusual initiative or dedication to activity in the public interest; or the integration of the science and/or profession of psychology with social action in a manner beneficial to all. Each year, the Committee presents two of these awards. The first is given to a senior psychologist; the second recognizes an outstanding psychologist who has made a significant contribution to the public interest in the early stages of his or her career. For purposes of the second award, recipients may not have held a PhD for more than 15 years. Members of the 1988 Committee are Robert Perloff (Chair), Vera S. Paster, Julia Ramos-(McKay)Grenier, Bonnie R. Strickland, and Logan Wright. The recipients of the awards in 1988 were Ellen Langer and M. Emory L. Cowen.

Presents an overview of the career contributions of Emory L. Cowen. For his remarkable contributions to conceptual, empirical and human service advances in the fields of community and clinical psychology, community mental health and education. He has been instrumental in the creation of a field for an entire generation of psychologists. His work has changed public schools throughout the United States. His ideas, research, model programs, program evaluations, and workshops have inspired others to generate new programs that provide affordable human services to thousands of children who are otherwise unlikely to receive help. He pioneered early detection and secondary prevention research. His clear thinking and conceptual challenges have fostered the study of primary prevention and wellness in mental health, both as a field for research and as a social policy. His tireless efforts as President of APA's Division of Community Psychology, a member of the Prevention Task Panel of the President's Commission on Mental Health, and the APA Task Force on Promotion, Prevention and Intervention Alternatives in Psychology are examples of his energetic contributions to psychology in the public interest. 1998/1999 award winners: Awards for Distinguished Contributions to the Public Interest.

The Awards for Distinguished Contributions to Psychology in the Public Interest recognize persons who have advanced psychology as a science and/or profession by a single extraordinary achievement or a lifetime of outstanding contributions in the public interest. Two awards are given, the first to a psychologist who has made a significant contribution to the public interest in the early stages of his/her career, and the second to a senior psychologist. It is announced here that Bonnie R. Strickland was the senior winner of this year's Award for Distinguished Contributions to the Public Interest, "for her four decades of outstanding research, writing, and overall contributions to psychology in the public interest." A citation is presented, along with a biography and selected bibliography of the winner's work. Also included here is the address delivered at the 106th Annual Convention of the American Psychological Association by James G. Kelly, winner of the Award for Distinguished Contribution to Psychology in the Public Interest in 1997. Finally, included here is a citation, announcing that Leonard Bickman was the winner of the 1998/1999 Award for Distinguished Contributions to Research in Public Policy, "for his seminal contributions to our understanding of public policy and societal problems and in recognition of the landmark Fort Bragg study of children's mental health services." Gold Medal Award for life achievement in the application of psychology.

The 2001 Gold Medal Award for Life Achievement in the Application of Psychology was awarded to Joseph D. Matarazzo. He is honored for advancing the applications of psychology as both a science and a profession. His service to students and to patients, as well as his research and scholarly writings in clinical psychology, health psychology, and clinical neuropsychology, have enriched the discipline of psychology. Professional psychology and deaf people: The emergence of a discipline.

This article depicts obstacles and opportunities that face students and consumers who are deaf and who interface with the profession of psychology. The rapid evolution of scholarship, specialized education and service programs, and related professional endeavors regarding psychology and deaf individuals is described. The emergence of a field of professional psychology and deaf people as a discipline in its own right is posited. Professional standards and ethics in this emerging discipline are discussed, especially those pertaining to fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and to the accessibility of deaf people to the profession of psychology as well as to the services of the profession. The potential for the American Psychological Association to further or hinder this emerging discipline and the advancement of all psychologists with disabilities are considered. Elliot Jurist, in beginning his third year as editor of Psychoanalytic Psychology, offers a few reflections on the field of psychoanalytic psychology, particularly in relation to the wider field of mental health. He introduces an interview that he conducted with Peter Fonagy, discusses the importance of Psychoanalytic Psychology remaining a scholarly journal, and notes that contributions to the journal are invited that discuss the place of psychoanalytic psychology in relation to the field of clinical psychology and the wider realm of mental health professions. "Psychosocial rehabilitation of deaf persons with severe mental illness: A multivariate model of residential outcomes": Erratum.

Reports an error in the original article by J. A. Cook, et al (Rehabilitation Psychology, 1993[Winter], Vol 38[4], 261–274). This article was printed with an excessive number of typographical errors. The publisher apologizes to the Journal's readers, the article's authors, and Robert Q. Pollard, Jr., the Guest Editor of the Special Issue on Deafness, for the confusion these misprints caused. Focuses on an innovative model of community treatment that integrates the fields of psychosocial rehabilitation (PSR) and deaf culture. A longitudinal research design was used to evaluate the progress of 60 Ss with mental illness and deafness toward living in the community due to a PSR program. Results suggest that deaf, mentally ill clients can increase their residential independence through PSR program participation. The number of Ss living in normal, commercial housing rose 25% after program participation. Awards for Distinguished Professional Contributions: Jack G. Wiggins.

Discusses the contributions made by Jack G. Wiggins, one of four 1997 recipients of the American Psychological Association (APA) Awards for Distinguished Professional Contributions. Wiggins is recognized for his contributions to defining the professional practice of psychology as a health service profession, thereby assuring that consumers benefit from the contributions that professional psychologists make to their welfare. Wiggins was a founder of psychology's first advocacy association, the Council for the Advancement of the Psychological Professions and Sciences, and continued his leadership in this area with its successor organization, the Association for the Advancement of Psychology. He was instrumental in the founding of the American Psychological Association College of Professional Psychology and was a developer of the professional psychology school in Ohio. The Awards for Distinguished Contributions to Psychology in the Public Interest recognize persons who have advanced psychology as a science and/or profession by distinguished contributions in the public interest. For 1984, Patrick H. DeLeon is cited for his leadership role in empowering the field of psychology with a strength of public purpose and public responsibility. Through his efforts as psychology's most dedicated colleague on Capitol Hill, DeLeon has contributed his professional effectiveness to improved federal support for research, education and training, and service delivery. Within psychology, he has contributed to its involvement with the legal system, to its public image and message, to its growth as a scientific and professional discipline, and to its professional status. Through his own example, he has charted psychology's course as a discipline and profession in making important contributions to human welfare, social justice, and economic growth. Introduction.

In the articles presented in this issue, developments in professional psychology following World War II are described. Elizabeth B. Wolf recounts her experiences as a graduate student in clinical psychology in the period just before the "psychotherapy revolution" and gives us a glimpse of clinical psychology in action during the 1940s and how she bartered her way into an internship. Dr. Wolf, still active in clinical psychology training, also discusses the early evolution of clinical psychology training programs. Milton F. Shore chronicles the rise and fall of the community mental health movement in our country and addresses the strengths and weaknesses of these programs and psychology's contributions to them. Robert Perloff, who characterizes himself as an "applied generalist," relates how his training in industrial psychology set the stage for his role in the development of consumer psychology and led to his interest in knowledge utilization. Each of these reminiscences catches the enthusiasm and optimism that pervaded professional psychology in the postwar years. These articles challenge us to recapture that optimism and commitment. Award for Distinguished Contributions to Psychology in the Public Interest: Urie Bronfenbrenner.

The Awards for Distinguished Contributions to Psychology in the Public Interest recognize persons who, in the opinion of the Committee on Psychology in the Public Interest Awards, have advanced psychology as a science and/or profession by a single extraordinary achievement or a lifetime of outstanding contributions in the public interest. Urie Bronfenbrenner, a 1987 winner, is cited for his notable contributions to human welfare as a leading student of child development, an effective advocate of humane public policy toward children and families, and a sensitive participant in Soviet-American relations and perceptive interpreter of them. His attention to the complexity of the social context of childhood transformed perspectives in developmental psychology and greatly enriched psychological inquiries into child and family policy, including his own pioneering cross-cultural research on day care and child care policies. Award for Distinguished Professional Contributions: Carl N. Zimet.

Carl N. Zimet was a recipient of the 1987 Distinguished Professional Contributions to Applied Psychology as a Professional Practice award. Zimet is cited for his devotion to high standards of education and training and professional practice in psychology. As a trustee on the American Board of Professional Psychology, he was charged to develop a plan which eventually became the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology. Through key leadership positions on APA governance bodies, and other professional organizations, he has dedicated himself to setting high standards and promoting the recognition of psychologists in the health care arena.
