In this paper, a study on the batch processing and characterization of microcellular foamed high-density polyethylene (HDPE/iPP) blends is reported. A microcellular plastic is a foamed polymer with a cell density greater than 109 cells/cm3 and fully grown cells smaller than 10 µm. Recent studies have shown that the morphology and crystallinity of semicrystalline polymers have a great influence on the solubility and diffusivity of the blowing agent and on the cellular structure of the resulting foam in microcellular batch processing. In this research, blends of HDPE and iPP were used to produce materials with variety of crystalline and phase morphologies to enhance the subsequent microcellular foaming. It was possible to produce much finer and more uniform foams with the blends than with neat HDPE and iPP. Moreover, the mechanical properties and in particular the impact strength of the blends were significantly improved by foaming.  相似文献

Fabricated by high-pressure or supercritical CO2 gas dissolution foaming process, nanocellular and microcellular polymer foams based on poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA homopolymer) present a controlled nucleation mechanism by the addition of a methylmethacrylate–butylacrylate–methylmethacrylate block copolymer (MAM), leading to defined nanocellular morphologies templated by the nanostructuration of PMMA/MAM precursor blends. Influence of the CO2 saturation temperature on the foaming mechanism and on the foam structure has been studied in 90/10 PMMA/MAM blends and also in the neat (amorphous) PMMA or (nanostructured) MAM polymers, in order to understand the role of the MAM nanostructuration in the cell growth and coalescence phenomena. CO2 uptake and desorption measurements on series of block copolymer/homopolymer blend samples show a competitive behavior of the soft, rubbery, and CO2-philic block of PBA (poly(butyl acrylate)) domains: fast desorption kinetics but higher initial saturation. This competition nevertheless is strongly influenced by the type of dispersion of PBA (e.g. micellar or lamellar) and a very consequent influence on foaming.CO2 sorption and desorption were characterized in order to provide a better understanding of the role of the block copolymer on the foaming stages. Poly(butyl acrylate) blocks are shown to have a faster CO2 diffusion rate than poly(methyl methacrylate) but are more CO2-philic. Thus gas saturation and cell nucleation (heterogeneous) are more affected by the PBA block while cell coalescence is more affected by the PMMA phases (in the copolymer blocks + in the matrix).  相似文献

Microcellular foaming of poly(phenylene sulfide)/poly(ether sulfones) (PPS/PES) blends presents a promising approach to produce high‐performance cellular materials with tailored microstructures and enhanced properties. This study investigated the effects of multiphase blend composition and process conditions on the foaming behaviors and final cellular morphology, as well as the dynamic mechanical properties of the solid and microcellular foamed PPS/PES blends. The microcellular materials were prepared via a batch‐foam processing, using the environment‐friendly supercritical CO2 (scCO2) as a blowing agent. The saturation and desorption behaviors of CO2 in PPS/PES blends for various blend ratios (10 : 0, 8 : 2, 6 : 4, 5 : 5, 4 : 6, 2 : 8, and 0 : 10) were also elaborately discussed. The experimental results indicated that the foaming behaviors of PPS/PES blends are closely related to the blend morphology, crystallinity, and the mass‐transfer rate of the CO2 in each polymer phase. Microcellular foam processing of polymers requires a nucleated cell density greater than 109 cells/cm3 so that the fully grown cells are smaller than 10 μm. A microcellular foam can be developed by first saturating a polymer sample with a volatile blowing agent, followed by rapidly decreasing its solubility in the polymer. In general, the cellular structure of semicrystalline polymer foams is difficult to control, compared to that of amorphous polymer foams. Since the gas does not dissolve in the crystallites (1), the polymer/gas solution formed during the microcellular processing is nonuniform. Moreover, the bubble nucleation is nonhomogeneous because of the heterogeneous nature of the semicrystalline polymer. In this paper, the effects of the crystallinity and morphology of semicrystalline polymers on the microcellular foam processing and on the cellular structure of products are investigated. First, polymer specimens with various crystallinities and morphologies were prepared by varying the cooling rate of the polymer melt. Then, the solubility and diffusivity of the blowing agent in and through specimens were studied. The specimens with differing crystallinities and morphologies were foamed and their cellular structures were compared. The experimental results agree with theoretical predictions, indicating that the crystallinity and morphology of semicrystalline polymers exert a strong influence on the foam processing and the structure of the product.  相似文献

Currently, the fabrication of microcellular semicrystalline polymer foam using supercritical CO2 as a blowing agent constitutes a worldwide interest. In this work, a facile approach of chain extension and batch foaming was proposed to prepare microcellular semicrystalline poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) foam using CO2 as a physical blowing agent. With the introduction of chain extender (CE), the weight-average molecular weight and gel fraction of PBAT samples increased; their crystallization temperature increased from 74.2 to 86.9 °C and their viscoelasticity was improved greatly. Microcellular PBAT foams with the cell size <4 μm and the cell density more than 1010 cells cm−3 were fabricated successfully. With increasing concentration of CE, the cell density and volume expansion ratio (VER) of various PBAT foams increased from 3.4 × 1010 to 8.7 × 1010 cells cm−3 and from 1.5 to 2.0 times, respectively. Microcellular semicrystalline polymers such as poly(ethylene terephthalate) show great promise for engineering applications because of their unique properties, particularly at higher densities. Recent studies reveal some high density microcellular polymers have longer fatigue lives and/or equal strengths to the neat polymer. Relatively few microcellular processing studies of semicrystalline polymers have been presented. In general, semicrystalline polymers are relatively difficult to microcellular process compared to amorphous polymers. In this paper and a companion paper, the microcellular processing of poly(ethylene terephthalate) in the amorphous and semicrystalline states is studied in order to quantify the processing differences. The microcellular processing steps addressed in this paper include gas/polymer solution formation and microvoid nucleation. Particular emphasis is given to microvoid nucleation comparing the processing characteristics of semicrystalline and amorphous materials. Moreover, this study identifies a number of critical process parameters. In general, the semicrystalline materials exhibit ten to one thousand times higher cell nucleation densities compared with the amorphous materials, resulting from heterogeneous nucleation contributions. The amorphous materials show a strong dependence on cell density, while the semicrystalline materials show a weaker dependence. Moreover, classical nucleation theory is not adequate to quantitatively predict the effects of saturation pressure on cell nucleation for either the amorphous or semicrystalline polyesters. Both the semicrystalline and amorphous materials exhibit constant nucleation cell densities with increasing foaming time. Foaming temperatures near the glass transition are found to influence the cell density of the amorphous polyesters, indicating some degree of thermally activated nucleation. Furthermore, classical nucleation theory is not adequate to predict the cell density dependence on foaming temperature. Similar to the amorphous polyesters above the glass transition temperature, nucleation in the semicrystalline materials is found to be independent of the foaming temperature.  相似文献

This work presents the cellular microstructures and properties of PMMA/graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) microcellular foams. GNRs were obtained by oxidative unzipping multiwalled carbon nanotubes and solvent thermal reduction in dimethylformamide (DMF), then they were mixed with PMMA to fabricate PMMA/GNRs nanocomposites by solution blending. Subsequently, supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) as a friendly foaming agent was applied to fabricate PMMA/GNRs microcellular foam by a batch foaming in a special mold. The morphology of cell structure was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and image software, showing that the addition of a smaller content of GNRs caused a fine cellular structure with a higher cell density (~3 × 1011 cells/cm3) and smaller cell sizes (~1 μm) due to their remarkable heterogeneous nucleation effect. The mechanical testing of PMMA/GNRs microcellular foams demonstrated that the obtained GNRs also could be used as a reinforcing filler to increase the mechanical properties of PMMA foams. An improvement in the compressive strength of ~80% (about 39% increase standardized by specific compressive strength) was achieved by 1.5 wt % GNRs addition, and the thermal stability of PMMA/GNRs foams was enhanced too. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microcellular foaming of commodity amorphous polymers, poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), and poly(styrene) (PS) was studied in supercritical CO2 via a batch one-step process in the presence of block copolymers able to change their foaming behaviour and therefore the porous structures. Triblock (styrene-co-butadiene-co-methylmethacrylate SBM, methylmethacrylate-co-butylacrylate-co-methylmethacrylate MAM) terpolymers were blended to PS or PMMA by extrusion. They showed advantages compared to classical PS-PMMA polymer blends in terms of cell size control and reduction of cell size. Foaming is carried out on bulk injection molded samples which were saturated under high pressures of CO2 (300 bars) at different temperatures (25° C to 80 °C) and different depressurization rates (pressure drop rates from 150 bar/min to 12 bar/min). Very distinct cellular structures and densities were controlled by varying either the copolymer type or the foaming conditions (T,P). Cell sizes ranged from 0.2 μm to 200 μm, and densities from 0.30 g/cm3 to 1 g/cm3 in the polymers considered. Particularly, when triblock copolymers were able to self organize (nanostructuring) in a polymer matrix, they became phase separated at a nanometer level, presenting nanostructured polymers matrixes. To conclude the study, a possible nanostructuring mechanism is suggested based on the interplay between rubbery and highly CO2-philic blocks/rigid and less CO2-philic blocks. It is demonstrated that block copolymer additives are a good pathway towards micro and ultra microcellular supercritical CO2 foaming of amorphous polymers.  相似文献

Supercritical fluids have been established as alternative foaming agents in various polymers as well as nanocomposite systems. Most recently, supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) has also been used in some studies as a medium of clay dispersion in the polymer matrix providing a solvent-free fabrication route for nanocomposites. In this work, this latter route was followed for the development of porous poly(ɿ-caprolactone) (PCL)/clay nanocomposites after pressure quench. Similarly, PCL/clay nanocomposites were also prepared using the solvent casting and melt blending methods and were then processed with scCO2 with the batch foaming technique (isothermal pressure quench) to produce their porous counterparts. Poor clay dispersion and non-uniform porous structures were observed when pure CO2 was used as a dispersion medium for nanocomposite preparation and as a blowing agent, respectively. On the contrary, polymer intercalation and more uniform cell structures were produced when CO2⿿ethanol mixtures were used as blowing agents.  相似文献

Highly CO2-philic nanoparticles, octatrimethylsiloxy polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) are used to increase the affinity of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) to CO2 in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) foaming, thus to improve its foaming performance and the foam morphology. PMMA and PMMA-POSS composite foams were produced based on the two-factorial design, at the upper and lower experimental conditions of pressure, temperature, processing time, and venting rate. The foams of PMMA-5% POSS composites exhibited smaller average pore sizes and higher pore densities than neat PMMA and PMMA-0.5% POSS composites. The smallest average pore diameter (0.3 μm) and the highest pore density (6.33 × 1012 cm−3) were obtained with this composite processed at 35°C, 32 MPa, for 24 h and depressurized with fast-venting rate (0.4 MPa/s). ScCO2 processing decreased the density of the polymer by more than 50%.  相似文献

The preparation of microcellular poly(ether imide) (PEI) based foams with three-dimensional geometry remains a great challenge worldwide. In this study, we fabricated microcellular PEI–carbon nanotube (CNT) bead foams with a batch rapid depressurization method in a self-designed mold with supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) as a blowing agent. The effects of the saturation time, foaming temperature, foaming pressure, and depressurization rate on the microcellular structures of the PEI foam were analyzed by the Taguchi approach to determine the optimum foaming conditions, and the influence of the CNT content on the cell structure was analyzed. The results show that the depressurization rate and foaming temperature were the key factors influencing the cell size and cell density (N f); that is, the high depressurization rate and low foaming temperature favored a small cell size and high N f. The foaming temperature also influenced the foaming ratio (ϕ), and a high ϕ was obtained at a high foaming temperature. Under optimal foaming conditions, PEI with 2.0 wt % CNTs presented the best cell structure; N f, cell size, and ϕ were 6.14 × 1010 cell/cm3, 2.43 μm, and 2.08, respectively. The mechanical properties of the final parts were related more to the foaming time and CNT concentration, and the maximum tensile and compression strength were reached at 3 h foaming time and 2.0 wt % CNT, that is, at 2.75 and 15.1 MPa (10% strain), respectively. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This study reports the low‐temperature and clean fabrication of porous poly(lactic acid) (PLA) through solid‐state foaming using various mixtures of ethyl lactate (EL) and supercritical CO2 (scCO2) as the blowing agent. Results showed that adding a small amount of EL (up to 0.2% molar fraction) to scCO2 enhanced the plasticizing effect of the blowing agent mixture. As a direct consequence, at an operating temperature of 35 °C, PLA foams could be manufactured with homogeneous morphology, density as low as 0.09 ± 0.01 g cm?3, mean pore sizes up to 519.0 ± 205.0 µm and pore densities in the range 2.0 × 105 to 3.4 × 108 pores cm?3. Conversely, at a temperature of 40 °C, an increase of plasticizer concentration in the blowing agent mixture up to 0.2% promoted the crystallization of the polymer during sorption stage and, consequently, foaming was slightly reduced. © 2013 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

In this work we investigated the solid-state supercritical CO2 (scCO2) foaming of poly(?-caprolactone) (PCL), a semi-crystalline, biodegradable polyester, and PCL loaded with 5 wt% of hydroxyapatite (HA) nano-particles.In order to investigate the effect of the thermal history and eventual residue of the crystalline phase on the pore structure of the foams, samples were subjected to three different cooling protocols from the melt, and subsequently foamed by using scCO2 as blowing agent. The foaming process was performed in the 37-40 °C temperature range, melting point of PCL being 60 °C. The saturation pressure, in the range from 10 to 20 MPa, and the foaming time, from 2 to 900 s, were modulated in order to control the final morphology, porosity and pore structure of the foams and, possibly, to amplify the original differences among the different samples.The results of this study demonstrated that by the scCO2 foaming it was possible to produce PCL and PCL-HA foams with homogeneous morphologies at relatively low temperatures. Furthermore, by the appropriate combination of materials properties and foaming parameters, we prepared foams with porosities in the 55-85% range, mean pore size from 40 to 250 μm and pore density from 105 to 108 pore/cm3. Finally, we also proposed a two-step depressurization foaming process for the design of bi-modal and highly interconnected foams suitable as scaffolds for tissue engineering.  相似文献

In this work, poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and PMMA/nanoclay nanocomposite microcellular foams were successfully prepared using a simple method based on in situ generation of supercritical carbon dioxide (CO2) from dry ice. The method was compared with conventional methods exempted from high pressure pump and a separate CO2 tank. Effect of various processing conditions such as saturation temperature and pressure and clay concentration on cellular morphology and hardness of the prepared microcellular foams was examined. State of the clay dispersion in the prepared PMMA/clay nanocomposites was characterized using X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy techniques. Field emission scanning electron microscopy was used to study cellular morphology of the prepared foams. It was observed that elevation of saturation temperature from 85 to 105 °C at constant saturation pressure increased cell density and decreased average cell size of the prepared PMMA foams. Furthermore, an increase in saturation pressure from 120 to 180 bar resulted in a reduction in average cell diameter and an increase in cell density of the prepared PMMA foams. On the basis of the gathered results, optimum conditions for preparation of PMMA microcellular foams were determined and applied for preparation of PMMA/nanoclay microcellular foams. It was shown that incorporation of clay into the polymer matrix resulted in a finer and more uniform cellular morphology in the final microcellular foams. It was also observed that incorporation of nanoclay into the prepared foams, up to 3 wt%, led to a moderate increase in the foam hardness.  相似文献

Ternary blends composed of matrix polymer poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) with different proportions of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) blends were prepared by melt mixing. The miscibility, crystallization behavior, mechanical properties and hydrophilicity of the ternary blends have been investigated. The high compatibility of PVDF/PMMA/PVP ternary blends is induced by strong interactions between the carbonyl groups of the PMMA/PVP blend and the CF2 or CH2 group of PVDF. According to the Fourier transform infrared and wide‐angle X‐ray difffraction analyses, the introduction of PMMA does not change the crystalline state (i.e. α phase) of PVDF. By contrast, the addition of PVP in the blends favors the transformation of the crystalline state of PVDF from non‐polar α to polar β phase. Moreover, the crystallinity of the PVDF/PMMA/PVP ternary blends also decreases compared with neat PVDF. Through mechanical analysis, the elongation at break of the blends significantly increases to more than six times that of neat PVDF. This confirms that the addition of the PMMA/PVP blend enhances the toughness of PVDF. Besides, the hydrophilicity of PVDF is remarkably improved by blending with PMMA/PVP; in particular when the content of PVP reaches 30 wt%, the water contact angle displays its lowest value which decreased from 91.4° to 51.0°. The potential of using dispersive domains in a polymer blend as a bubble nucleating agent was investigated by exploiting its high dispersibility in a matrix polymer in the molten state and its immiscibility in the solid state. In this experiments, polypropylene (PP) was used as the nucleating agent in polystyrene (PS) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) foams at the weight fraction of 10, 20, and 30 wt %. PP creates highly dispersed domains in PS and PMMA matrices during the extrusion processing. The high diffusivity of the physical foaming agent, i.e., CO2 in PP, and the high interfacial tension of PP with PS and PMMA could be beneficial for providing preferential bubble nucleation sites. The experimental results of the pressure quench solid‐state foaming of PS/PP and PMMA/PP blends verified that the dispersed PP could successfully increase the cell density over 106 cells/cm3 for PS/PP and 107 cells/cm3 for PMMA/PP blend and reduce the cell size to 24 μm for PS/PP and 9 μm for PMMA/PP blends foams. The higher interfacial tension between PP and the matrix polymer created a unique cell morphology where dispersed PP particles were trapped inside cells in the foam. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Supercritical CO2 as a blowing agent has attracted increasing interest in the preparation of microcellular polyamide 6 (PA6) foams. In this work, we developed the supercritical CO2-assisted method to prepare a series of different microcellular PA6 foams by controlling its crystallization properties in two steps and carefully investigated the corresponding crystallization properties of modified PA6 and foams using various techniques. Initially, a multifunctional epoxy-based chain extender (CE) was used to produce high-melt strength-modified PA6 with improved foaming ability; then, the resulting PA6 was foamed to prepare the microcellular foams of PA6 using supercritical CO2 as a blowing agent in a batch foaming route. The CE effectively enhanced the melt strength of PA6, and CE usage was optimized to obtain a threshold of high branching without crosslinking. The number of crystals was also adjusted by the saturation temperature. Furthermore, these crystals that formed during the saturation process served as high-efficiency bubble nucleating agents and then limited the growth of bubbles at the same time. The microcellular foams of PA6 were successfully obtained with a cell size of 10.0 μm, and cell density of 2.0 × 109 cells/cm3 at the saturation temperature of 225°C.  相似文献

The effects of oxygen functional groups and alkyl chains at the surface of graphene oxide (GO) on the thermal stability, mechanical properties and foaming behavior of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanocomposites were investigated. Alkyl‐functionalized GO (GO‐ODA) was prepared by grafting octadecylamine (ODA) on the surface of GO. PMMA/GO and PMMA/GO‐ODA nanocomposite were obtained by solution blending and were foamed using supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2). GO‐ODA, with the presence of alkyl chains, showed a better dispersion capability in PMMA matrix than GO with a large amount of oxygen functional groups. In addition, the good dispersion capability increased thermal stability and mechanical strength. In comparison with PMMA/GO samples foamed at 70 °C, PMMA/GO‐ODA nanocomposite foams displayed improved cell structures with higher cell density, smaller cell size and more homogeneous cell size distribution, which results from the strong heterogeneous nucleation due to alkyl chains on the GO surface. The foaming behaviors became more complicated at 80 °C as the GO might be intercalated and exfoliated with the aid of scCO2, thus further enhancing the heterogeneous nucleation during the foaming process. In the past 3 decades, there has been great advancement in the preparation of microcellular thermoplastic polymer foams. However, little attention has been paid to thermoplastic elastomers. In this study, microcellular poly(ethylene‐co‐octene) (PEOc) rubber foams with a cell density of 2.9 × 1010 cells/cm3 and a cell size of 1.9 μm were successfully prepared with carbon dioxide as the physical blowing agent with a batch foaming process. The microcellular PEOc foams exhibited a well‐defined, closed‐cell structure, a uniform cell size distribution, and the formation of unfoamed skin at low foaming temperatures. Their difference from thermoplastic foam was from obvious volume recovery in the atmosphere because of the elasticity of the polymer matrix. We investigated the effect of the molecular weight on the cell growth process by changing the foaming conditions, and two important effect factors on the cell growth, that is, the polymer matrix modulus/melt viscoelastic properties and gas diffusion coefficient, were assessed. With increasing molecular weight, the matrix modulus and melt viscosity tended to increase, whereas the gas solubility and diffusion coefficient decreased. The increase in the matrix modulus and melt viscosity tended to decrease the cell size and stabilize the cell structure at high foaming temperatures, whereas the increase in the gas diffusion coefficient facilitated cell growth at the beginning and limited cell growth because most of the gas diffused out of the polymer matrix during the long foaming times or at high foaming temperatures. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel poly(aryl ether nitrile ketone) foams were prepared through the batch foaming method with supercritical CO2 as the blowing agent. Both temperature‐induced and pressure‐induced foaming methods were conducted to examine the influence of nitrile groups on the foaming result. The results indicated that nitrile groups influenced the foaming result by affecting both the viscoelasticity and CO2 absorption of the polymers. In addition, the CO2 solubility of the polymers increased with increasing CN content presumably because of the Lewis acid–base nature of the interaction between the CO2 molecules and the nitrile groups. The cell growth process was assessed by analyzing the influence of foaming temperature and foaming time on the cell morphology. Nanocellular foams with a minimum size of 30–50 nm were achieved by the temperature‐induced foaming method. Moreover, highly expanded foams with a maximum expansion ratio of 23.6 were obtained by the pressure‐induced foaming method. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献
