Abstract. Electronic Data Interchange Systems (EDI) are increasingly being used by business firms to improve operations and customer service. One of the major motivations for business organizations using EDI is to gain a strategic advantage in the marketplace. Although EDI has been implemented by many organizations, unfortunately not all have gained the same level of expected advantage or envisioned benefits.
In this study we focus on the impact of EDI implementation commitment and implementation success on competitive advantage and firm performance. We study two categories of companies: companies that initiate the development of EDI and are known as hub companies and those that are their non-hub counterparts. Findings indicate that non-hub firms may not reap the same level of expected benefits resulting from EDI technology adoption and implementation as hub firms.  相似文献

The growing interest in the use of electronic data interchange (EDI) to revolutionize the way in which business conducts trading activities leads to research questions concerning the characteristics of electronic partnerships that promote implementation success. The research model in this study shows that partnership attributes affect EDI implementation, which has three dimensions: integration, utilization, and diversity, and performance. Partnership attributes encompass partner trust, interdependence, and commitment. Results show that partner trust, interdependence, and commitment affect the extent to which companies undertake EDI integration and increase the percentage of EDI exchange and performance. This suggests that companies contemplating EDI should set up compatible business processes and a high-quality partner relationship for implementation and performance.  相似文献

Interorganizational systems (IOS) based on electronic data interchange (EDI) are being increasingly used. However, trading partners in EDI-based IOS vary in terms of their extent of EDI use. This paper presents a grounded-theory based study of EDI use in four organizations in different industries. The methodology allows the study of EDI use from perspectives of causal conditions, types of EDI use, strategies for encouraging EDI use, consequences of EDI use, and contextual factors. Such a qualitative study facilitates an understanding of how and why different factors impact EDI use. Under-researched issues, such as internal use of EDI, impact of EDI on different types of employees, and use of EDI for collective benefit of multiple organizations are discussed.  相似文献

This paper proposes a causal knowledge-based expert system (CAKES) for modeling and designing electronic data interchange (EDI) controls. The case base of CAKES incorporates environmental, EDI control and EDI implementation factors. The primary reason for designing EDI controls is to promote consideration of the complex causal relationships that exist among various environments and EDI controls. A better understanding of industry, organization, and system characteristics is a necessary prerequisite to design, since it is difficult even for EDI experts to cognitively predict the causal effect of one control on the others. A fuzzy cognitive map is used for building a causal knowledge-base for the design. Initially, structural equation models (SEMs) are used to identify the relevant relationships among the components and to indicate their direction and strength. A casual inference in control design is possible, among environments, EDI controls and EDI implementation, through the CAKES-EDI.  相似文献

Many of the economic advantages of using Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) result from improved relationships between business trading partners. This study develops and tests a model explaining the effects of EDI on three structural variables of inter-organizational relationships: channel intensity, formalization and information quality. The model also includes the effects of these structural variables on cooperation and conflict between trading partners, and on satisfaction and performance in a marketing channel. The model is based on Van de Ven and Ferry's theory of inter-organizational relations and the literature on marketing channels. Responses from 97 retail companies to a mail survey indicated support for the effects of EDI use on channel intensity and formalization but not on channel information quality. Moreover, intensity and formalization were positively related to channel cooperation but not to conflict. Channel performance was positively related to channel cooperation and negatively related to channel conflict. These findings suggest that EDI use improves cooperation between trading partners and leads to greater satisfaction and performance in electronically-mediated business transactions.  相似文献

A case study was performed examining the electronic data interchange (EDI) implementation projects of four divisions of an aerospace company. By interviewing both partners in the relationship, a business-to-business (B2B) electronic commerce (e-commerce) implementation framework was developed. The framework provides guidelines for the type of e-business partnership to be pursued based on the volume of transactions (low vs. high) and complexity of transactions (simple vs. complex). Machine-to-machine B2B solutions should be pursued when the there is a high transaction volume of simple transactions. In other situations, potential B2B solutions include: e-business pull, partner access-extranet/push, or manual e-transmission.  相似文献

This research attempts to identify the benefits that organizations gain by using EDI, the conditions under which these advantages can be attained, and their variation with time. Using a longitudinal design, 65 Canadian organizations were surveyed twice over a three-year period. In phase 1, factors such as the organizational support, the implementation process, the control procedures, and the integration of EDI were found to be positively related to the attainment of EDI advantages whereas, the imposition of EDI by business partners had a negative effect. In phase 2, the implementation process and the imposition of EDI lost their importance, imposition having only a positive effect on the organizational context. The reasons for these changes are discussed.  相似文献

This paper provides a critical examination of electronic data interchange (EDI) standards and their application in different types of trading relationships. It argues that EDI standards are not directly comparable to more stable sets of technical standards in that they are dynamically tested and negotiated in use with each trading exchange. It takes the position that EDI standards are an emergent language form and must mean different things at the institutional and local levels. Using the lens of emergent linguistic analysis it shows how the institutional and local levels must always be distinct and yet can coexist. EDI standards can never represent the creation of an ‘Esperanto of institutional communication’. Instead we believe that standards must be developed such that they support and accommodate general basic grammatical forms that can be customised to individual needs. The analysis is supported by a set of exemplary cases.  相似文献
