Emerging ICT concepts for smart,safe and sustainable industrial systems

This editorial introduces the special issue on Emerging Information and Communication Technology (ICT) concepts for smart, safe and sustainable industrial systems in the Elsevier journal Computers in Industry. The 13 papers in this special issue were selected because of their high quality and also because they propose emerging ICT solutions that address at least one of the three dimensions we suggest as basic requirements to design usable future Industrial Systems that must be safe, smart and sustainable. Previous global discussions about the state of the art with regard to the topic of this special issue are provided, as well as exploratory guidelines for future research in this area.     

Intelligent distributed production control

This editorial introduces the special issue of the Springer journal, Journal of Intelligent Manufacturing, on intelligent distributed production control. This special issue contains selected papers presented at the 13th IFAC Symposium on Information Control Problems in Manufacturing??INCOM??2009 (Bakhtadze and Dolgui 2009). The papers in this special issue were selected because of their high quality and their specific way of addressing the variety of issues dealing with intelligent distributed production control. Previous global discussions about the state of the art in intelligent distributed production control are provided, as well as exploratory guidelines for future research in this area.

In May 2014, shortly after Bernd Krieg-Bruckner''s 65th birthday, and shortly before he was going to retire as a professor at Universitat Bremen, Prof. Lu Ruqian proposed us to prepare a special issue of the International Journal of Software and Informatics for this occasion. However, this could not be done within just four months. Fortunately, it turned out that there would be a still better occasion to prepare such an issue: In September 2015, Bernd will finish the last international EC-funded project that he directed for three years, and will enter the life of a proper professor emeritus who has no administrative obligation any more, but can still occupy himself with whatever he finds interesting ......     

Storing pictures for different purposes

There are many arguments put forward as to how packages should store their graphical data for subsequent use and/or transfer to another system or package. These discussions are not unique, but are particularly important, to CAE applications. This paper looks at the different requirements for the storage of pictures. It suggests that the arguments put forward are not as emotive as are often suggested. There are different solutions for different requirements. There is a need for various methods of storage in a CAE package. The important thing from a designer's point of view is to ensure that the correct storage method is adopted for a particular need. The discussions presented here build on the papers in the special issue of Computer-Aided Design that considered graphics standards. The papers of particular interest are those by Arnold, Owen and Bloor and Mumford.     

Workflow Automation: Overview and Research Issues

Workflow management systems, a relatively recent technology, are designed to make work more efficient, integrate heterogeneous application systems, and support interorganizational processes in electronic commerce applications. In this paper, we introduce the field of workflow automation, the subject of this special issue of Information Systems Frontiers. In the first part of the paper, we provide basic definitions and frameworks to aid understanding of workflow management technologies. In the remainder of the paper, we discuss technical and management research opportunities in this field and discuss the other contributions to the special issue.

Guest editorial for special section on success and failure in software engineering

Many papers investigate success and failure of software projects from diverse perspectives, leading to a myriad of antecedents, causes, correlates, factors and predictors of success and failure. This body of research has not yet produced a solid, empirically grounded body of evidence enabling actionable practices for increasing success and avoiding failure in software projects. The need for more evidence motivates this special issue, which includes four articles that contribute to our understanding of how software project success and failure relate to topics such as: requirements engineering, user satisfaction, start-up pivots and retrospective discussions. We moreover present a brief systematic review to both situate the accepted articles in existing literature and to explore enduring methodological and conceptual challenges in this area, including developing sound instruments for measuring success, representative sampling without population lists and creating both empirically sound and practically actionable taxonomies of success antecedents.     

A Foreword to the Special Issue in Honor of Professor Bernardo Cockburn on His 60th Birthday: A Life Time of Discontinuous Schemings

We present this special issue of the Journal of Scientific Computing to celebrate Bernardo Cockburn’s sixtieth birthday. The theme of this issue is discontinuous Galerkin methods, a hallmark of Bernardo’s distinguished professional career. This foreword provides an informal but rigorous account of what enabled Bernardo’s achievements, based on the concluding presentation he gave at the the IMA workshop “Recent Advances and Challenges in Discontinuous Galerkin Methods and Related Approaches” on July 1, 2017 which was widely deemed as the best lecture of his career so far.     

Editorial: Introduction to the Special Issue on Multimedia Data Mining

The twelve papers in this special issue focus on multimedia data mining. The special issue evolved from a successful workshop organized in conjunction with the 2006 ACM KDD conference, but the special issue was open to the whole community.     

Molecular genetics and computer analyses

This issue of CABIOS contains a set of reviewed papers which relate to the recent Macromolecules, Genes and Computers International Workshop and Symposium held August 12-17, 1986 in Waterville Valley, NH. This introductory article reviews that meeting and those ideas which will provide a useful context for the continuing research and discussions on molecular genetic analyses contained within this issue.     

Does the common criteria paradigm have a future? [security and privacy]

In IEEE Security & Privacy's July/August 2003 issue, the author discussed the then upcoming 4th International Common Criteria Conference, which was held in Stockholm in September. Reviewing the CD of the presentations, however, he is left with the strong impression that, while a good idea when promulgated five years ago (after five years' effort by the six founding nations), the CC enterprise might have run out of gas. The proceedings' record and the author's own sampling of discussions on the CC Forum suggest the management structure and process need considerable revamping if the CC is to have a future.     

Computational Vision at Yale

We present a brief introduction to the five articles that make up this special issue: Shock Graphs and Shape Matching, The Bas-Relief Ambiguity, Incremental Focus of Attention for Robust Vision Based Tracking, What Tasks can be Performed with an Uncalibrated Stereo Vision System, and Volumetric Deformation Analysis Using Mechanics-Based Data Fusion: Application in Cardiac Motion Recovery. Tjis introduction and accompanying articles provide a by no means exhaustive, but hopefully representative sampling of the computational vision at Yale University.     

Traffic systems as joint cognitive systems: issues to be solved for realizing human-technology coagency

This paper discusses a couple of issues that are at the center of discussions in the development of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and their effects from the viewpoints of the joint cognitive systems. The first is the issue of authority and responsibility. It is argued that machine may be given authority to improve safety and to alleviate possible damages, even in the framework of human-centered automation. The second is the issue of the overtrust in and overreliance on ADAS, in which it is argued that possibilities and types of overtrust or overreliance may vary depending on characteristics of ADAS. The importance of the design of human–machine interface and human–machine interactions is included in the discussions.     

Foster strengths and circumvent weaknesses: Advantages and disadvantages of online versus face-to-face subgroup discourse

This article points out some advantages and disadvantages of online over face-to-face subgroup discourse. Using a mixed methods study methodology, five online graduate-level courses were investigated and the experiences from twenty-two participants were described to identify key advantages and disadvantages of subgroup structures used to evaluate graduate students' and instructors' experiences. Outcomes revealed that online small group discussions have more advantages over face-to-face ones. Online small group discussions can be an effective strategy to interweave whole-class discussions with small group discussions in order to reduce overall information loads in large classes while providing more opportunities for interaction. However, online small group discussions have some disadvantages over face-to-face discussions. The findings may have implications for both practitioners and researchers studying online small group discourse. They could serve as a base for researchers to further explore the issue to achieve fruitful online discourse.

Pervasive computing has great potential to improve healthcare, from enriching data collection and distribution to virtually bringing experts to an emergency site. This special issue samples this developing area through five theme articles that go beyond current applications to find a wider range of applicability. This article is part of a special issue on Healthcare.     

Computationally intelligent agents in economics and finance

This paper is an editorial guide for the second special issue on Computational Intelligence in economics and finance, which is a continuation of the special issue of Information Sciences, Vol. 170, No. 1. This second issue appears as a part of the outcome from the 3rd International Workshop on Computational Intelligence in Economics and Finance, which was held in Cary, North Carolina, September 26-30, 2003. This paper offers some main highlights of this event, with a particular emphasis on some of the observed progress made in this research field, and a brief introduction to the papers included in this special issue.     

A roadmap of problem frames research

It has been a decade since Michael Jackson introduced problem frames to the software engineering community. Since then, he has published further work addressing problem frames as well as presenting several keynote addresses. Other authors have researched problem frames, have written about their experiences and have expressed their opinions. It was not until 2004 that an opportunity presented itself for researchers in the field to gather as a community. The first International Workshop on Advances and Applications of Problem Frames (IWAAPF'04) was held at the International Conference on Software Engineering in Edinburgh on 24th May 2004. This event attracted over 30 participants: Jackson delivered a keynote address, researchers presented their work and an expert panel discussed the challenges of problem frames.Featuring in this special issue are two extended papers from the workshop, an invited contribution from Jackson in which he positions problem frames in the context of the software engineering discipline, and this article, where we provide a review of the literature.     

Speech and Language processing as assistive technologies

We are delighted to bring you this special issue on speech and language processing for assistive technology. It addresses an important research area that is gaining increased recognition from researchers in speech and language processing as a rich and fulfilling area on which to focus their work, and by researchers in assistive technology as the means to dramatically improve communication technologies for individuals with disabilities. This special issue brings a wide swath of approaches and applications highlighting the variety this area offers.
