Thermal (gas) nitridation of stainless steel alloys can yield low interfacial contact resistance (ICR), electrically conductive and corrosion-resistant nitride containing surface layers (Cr2N, CrN, TiN, V2N, VN, etc.) of interest for fuel cells, batteries, and sensors. This paper presents results of scale-up studies to determine the feasibility of extending the nitridation approach to thin 0.1 mm stainless steel alloy foils for proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) bipolar plates. Developmental Fe-20Cr-4V alloy and type 2205 stainless steel foils were treated by pre-oxidation and nitridation to form low-ICR, corrosion-resistant surfaces. As-treated Fe-20Cr-4V foil exhibited target (low) ICR values, whereas 2205 foil suffered from run-to-run variation in ICR values, ranging up to 2× the target value. Pre-oxidized and nitrided surface structure examination revealed surface-through-layer-thickness V-nitride particles for the treated Fe-20Cr-4V, but near continuous chromia for treated 2205 stainless steel, which was linked to the variation in ICR values. Promising corrosion resistance was observed under simulated aggressive PEMFC anode- and cathode-side bipolar plate conditions for both materials, although ICR values were observed to increase. The implications of these findings for stamped bipolar plate foils are discussed.  相似文献

In this work, a high temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell (HT-PEMFC) with stamped SS304 bipolar plates is successfully developed. Its performance was evaluated under two types of gaskets at different assembly torques and air stoichiometric ratios. The rates of pressure loss at a torque of 7 N-m with 50 Shore A hardness gaskets was 2.0 × 10?3 MPa min?1, which is acceptable. The best performance of the developed HT-PEMFC with stamped SS304 bipolar plates was 228.33 mW cm?2, which approaches the performance of HT-PEMFCs with graphite bipolar plates. The optimal air stoichiometric ratio for the HT-PEMFC with stamped SS304 bipolar plates was 4.0, which is higher than that for proton exchange membrane fuel cells with CNC milled graphite bipolar plates. This is probably because of the deformation of the flow channels under the assembly compression force, which causes an elevated gas-diffusion drag in the flow channels. After the test, it was observed that some products of corrosion reaction formed on the surface of the SS304 bipolar plate. This phenomenon may lead to a decrease in the operating life of the HT-PEMFC.  相似文献

A manufacturing and single-cell fuel cell performance study of stamped, laser welded, and gas nitrided ferritic stainless steel foils in an advanced automotive bipolar plate assembly design was performed. Two developmental foil compositions were studied: Fe–20Cr–4V and Fe–23Cr–4V wt.%. Foils 0.1 mm thick were stamped and then laser welded together to create single bipolar plate assemblies with cooling channels. The plates were then surface treated by pre-oxidation and nitridation in N2–4H2 based gas mixtures using either a conventional furnace or a short-cycle quartz lamp infrared heating system. Single-cell fuel cell testing was performed at 80 °C for 500 h at 0.3 A/cm2 using 100% humidification and a 100%/40% humidification cycle that stresses the membrane and enhances release of the fluoride ion and promotes a more corrosive environment for the bipolar plates. Periodic high frequency resistance potential-current scans during the 500 h fuel cell test and post-test analysis of the membrane indicated no resistance increase of the plates and only trace levels of metal ion contamination.  相似文献

Stainless steel is a potential material to be used as the bipolar plate for proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEFC) because of its suitable physical and mechanical properties. Several coating techniques have been applied to improve its corrosion resistance. But seldom study is focused on the microstructure evolution with corrosion. In the present study, the use of TiN-coated stainless steel as the bipolar plate is evaluated. Two surface coating techniques, pulsed bias arc ion plating (PBAIP) and magnetron sputtering (MS), are adoped to prepare the TiN-coated stainless steel. Their corrosion resistances and electrical conductivities of the coated substrates are evaluated. The performance shows strong dependance on microstructural characteristics. The corrosion of SS304/Ti2N/TiN prepared by MS mainly occurs on the grain boundary. The corrosion of SS304/TiN prepared by PBAIP mainly takes place from the large particles on the coating. The Ti2N/TiN multilayer coating provides superb corrosion protective layer for stainless steel. Both the TiN and Ti2N/TiN coatings provide low contact resistance.  相似文献

Stainless steels as proton exchange membrane fuel cell bipolar plates have received extensive attention in recent years. The pack chromizing layer was fabricated on 316L stainless steel to improve the corrosion resistance and electrical conductivity. The corrosion properties were investigated in 0.5 M H2SO4 + 2 ppm HF solution at 70 °C purged with hydrogen gas and air. Higher electrochemical impedance and more stable passive film were obtained by chromizing the 316L stainless steel. Potentiodynamic polarization results showed the corrosion current densities were reduced to 0.264  μA cm−2 and 0.222  μA cm−2 in two simulated operating environments. In addition, the interfacial contact resistance was decreased to 1.4 mΩ⋅cm2 under the compaction force of 140 N⋅cm−2 and maintained at low values after potentiostatic polarization for 4 h. The excellent corrosion and conductive performances could be attributed to the chromium carbides and high alloying element content in chromizing layer.  相似文献

Metallic bipolar plates have several advantages over bipolar plates made from graphite and composites due to their high conductivity, low material and production costs. Moreover, thin bipolar plates are possible with metallic alloys, and hence low fuel cell stack volume and mass are. Among existing fabrication methods for metallic bipolar plates, stamping and hydroforming are seen as prominent approaches for mass production scales. In this study, the effects of important process parameters of these manufacturing processes on the corrosion resistance of metallic bipolar plates made of SS304 were investigated. Specifically, the effects of punch speed, pressure rate, stamping force and hydroforming pressure were studied as they were considered to inevitably affect the bipolar plate micro-channel dimensions, surface topography, and hence the corrosion resistance. Corrosion resistance under real fuel cell conditions was examined using both potentiodynamic and potentiostatic experiments. The majority of the results exhibited a reduction in the corrosion resistance for both stamped and hydroformed plates when compared with non-deformed blank plates of SS304. In addition, it was observed that there exist an optimal process window for punch speed in stamping and the pressure rate in hydroforming to achieve improved corrosion resistance at a faster production rate.  相似文献

Stainless steel bipolar plates (BPPs) are regarded as promising alternatives to traditional graphite BPPs in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). This technology has experienced more than 20 years development and has been partially applied in industrial production. This review surveys recent progress of entire development process for stainless steel BPPs in terms of flow field design, microforming process, joining process and coating process. Besides, assembly process considering dimensional error, shape error and assembly error are comprehensively summarized as well. Finally, technical challenges and future trends are presented for the application of stainless steel BPPs for PEMFCs.  相似文献

The idea of using nitride films coated by sputtering Nb and Cr, using N2 as a reaction gas, as protective layers for metallic bipolar plates (BP) of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stacks, was explored by experiments. Specimens were fabricated from austenite 304 stainless steels, which are frequently used as bipolar plate materials for fuel cells due to their good corrosion resistance and high strength at elevated temperature. The results of XRD analysis and Gaussian function analysis of the coated films suggest that NbN or NbN/NbCrN films were induced depending on the process parameters. The NbN/NbCrN multiphase films were induced at high Cr target powers and low gas ratios among the process parameters selected in this investigation. The result of ICR measurement of the films suggests that the effect of the Cr target power, i.e. the effect of the Cr amount in the film, on the ICR of the films is not significant, while the effect of the gas ratio on the ICR of the films is noticeable. For the films deposited at different gas ratios, the ICR of the film generally decreases as the gas ratio increases. In general, all the 304 SS specimens coated by the NbN single phase or NbN/NbCrN multiphase films at the given process parameters showed significantly improved corrosion resistance in comparison with the bare 304 SS. Among NbN single phase and NbN/NbCrN multiphase films, the performance of NbN/NbCrN multiphase films was more stable. Depending on the process parameters, the polarization curves of the specimens coated with NbN films showed rapid increase of the current density due to the pitting. Therefore, as corrosion resistance coating for metallic BP of PEMFC stacks, NbN/NbCrN multiphase film may be preferred to NbN single phase films.  相似文献

A preform moulding technique using expanded graphite is developed to manufacture composite bipolar plates for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). The preform is composed of expanded graphite, graphite flake and phenol resin. Preforms utilizing the tangled structure of expanded graphite are easily fabricated at a low pressure of 0.07–0.28 MPa. A pre-curing temperature (100 °C) slightly above the melting point of phenol powders (90 °C) induces moderate curing, but also prevents excessive curing. After the preform is placed in a steel mould, compression moulding is carried out at high pressure (10 MPa) and temperature (150 °C). The fabrication conditions are optimized by checking the electrical conductivity, flexural strength and microstructure of the composite. The optimized electrical conductivity and flexural strength, 250 S cm−1 and 50 MPa, respectively, met the requirements for PEMFC bipolar plates.  相似文献

Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have been promoted more than 100 years and are in the forefront of the large-scale commercial application with the technology breakthrough of key components and stack. As a key component in PEMFCs, bipolar plates (BPPs) can distribute reaction gases, collect current, remove product water, and cool the stack. Metallic BPPs have superior manufacturability and cost effectiveness, higher levels of power density, and high mechanical strength, and have been regarded as an alternative to graphite BPPs. Surface coatings are essential to metallic BPPs because they enhance corrosion resistance and electrical conductivity. Carbon-based coatings have attracted considerable attention from both academia and industry owing to their merits of high performance and low cost. In this paper, a comprehensive survey is presented on the recent progress in carbon-based coatings in terms of evaluation methods, material design, deposition process, and coating performance. Pure amorphous carbon (a-C), metal-doped a-C film, and metal carbide (MeC) are summarised. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphene, and C60 are discussed as well. Finally, technical barriers and developing trends are presented in the application of carbon-based coatings for metallic BPPs in PEMFCs.  相似文献

In this study, 304 stainless steel (SS) bipolar plates are fabricated by flexible forming process and an amorphous carbon (a-C) film is coated by closed field unbalanced magnetron sputter ion plating (CFUBMSIP). The interfacial contact resistance (ICR), in-plane conductivity and surface energy of the a-C coated 304SS samples are investigated. The initial performance of the single cell with a-C coated bipolar plates is 923.9 mW cm−2 at a cell voltage of 0.6 V, and the peak power density is 1150.6 mW cm−2 at a current density of 2573.2 mA cm−2. Performance comparison experiments between a-C coated and bare 304SS bipolar plates show that the single cell performance is greatly improved by the a-C coating. Lifetime test of the single cell over 200 h and contamination analysis of the tested membrane electrode assemble (MEA) indicate that the a-C coating has excellent chemical stability. A 100 W-class proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) short stack with a-C coated bipolar plates is assembled and shows exciting initial performance. The stack also exhibits uniform voltage distribution, good short-term lifetime performance, and high volumetric power density and specific power. Therefore, a-C coated 304SS bipolar plates may be practically applied for commercialization of PEMFC technology.  相似文献

Stainless steel is attractive as material for bipolar plates in proton exchange membrane fuel cells, due to its high electrical conductivity, high mechanical strength and relatively low material and processing cost. Potentiostatic and potentiodynamic tests were performed in H2SO4 solutions on AISI 316L stainless steel bipolar plates with etched flow fields. The effect of pH and presence of small amounts of fluoride and chloride on the corrosion rate and interfacial contact resistance of the stainless steel bipolar plate were investigated. The tests performed in electrolytes with various pH values revealed that the oxide layer was thinner and more prone to corrosion at pH values significantly lower than the pH one expects the bipolar plate to experience in an operating proton exchange membrane fuel cells. The use of solutions with very low pH in such measurements is thus probably not the best way of accelerating the corrosion rate of stainless steel bipolar plates. By use of strongly acidic solutions the composition and thickness of the oxide layer on the stainless steel is probably altered in a way that might never have happened in an operating proton exchange membrane fuel cell. Additions of fluoride and chloride in the amounts expected in an operating fuel cell (2 ppm F and 10 ppm Cl) did not cause significant changes for neither the polarization- nor the contact resistance measurements. However, by increasing the amount of Cl to 100 ppm, pitting was initiated on the stainless steel surface.  相似文献

Superior corrosion resistance and high electrical conductivity are crucial to the metallic bipolar plates towards a wider application in proton exchange membrane fuel cells. In this work, molybdenum carbide coatings are deposited in different thicknesses onto the surface of 316 L stainless steel by magnetron sputtering, and their feasibility as bipolar plates is investigated. The microstructure characterization confirms a homogenous, compact and defectless surface for the coatings. The anti-corrosion performance improves with the increase of the coating thickness by careful analysis of the potentiodynamic and potentiostatic data. With the adoption of a thin chromium transition layer and coating of a ∼1052 nm thick molybdenum carbide, an excellent corrosion current density of 0.23 μA cm−2 is achieved, being approximately 3 orders of magnitude lower than that of the bare stainless steel. The coated samples also show a low interfacial contact resistance down to 6.5 mΩ cm2 in contrast to 60 mΩ cm2 for the uncoated ones. Additionally, the hydrophobic property of the coatings’ surface is beneficial for the removal of liquid water during fuel cell operation. The results suggest that the molybdenum carbide coated stainless steel is a promising candidate for the bipolar plates.  相似文献

Coated aluminum bipolar plates demonstrate better mechanical strength, ease of manufacturability, and lower interfacial contact resistance (ICR) than graphite composite plates in polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell applications. In this study, coated aluminum and graphite composite bipolar plates were installed in separate single PEM fuel cells and tested under normal operating conditions and cyclic loading. After 1000 h of operation, samples of both the bipolar plates and the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) were collected from both the cathode and the anode sides of the cell and characterized to examine the stability and integrity of the plate coating and evaluate possible changes of the ionic conductivity of the membrane due any electrochemical reaction with the coating material. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis were performed on the land and valley surfaces of the reactant flow fields at both the anode and the cathode sides of the bipolar plates. The measurements were superimposed on the reference to identify possible zones of anomalies for the purpose of conducting focused studies in these locations. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of samples scraped from the anode and cathode electrodes of the MEA showed the tendency for catalyst growth that could result in power degradation. Samples of the by-product water produced during the single fuel cell operation were also collected and tested for the existence of chromium, nickel, carbon, iron, sulfur and aluminum using mass spectroscopy techniques. The EDX measurements indicated the possibility of dissociation and dissolution of nickel chrome that was used as the binder for the carbide-based corrosion-resistant coating with the aluminum substrate.  相似文献

Proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is considered as one promising clean and highly efficient power generation technology in 21st century. Current PEMFC operating at low temperatures (<80 °C) encounters several difficulties, such as CO tolerance, heat rejection, which can be, to a great extent, surmounted at higher temperatures (120–150 °C). However, the higher temperature conditions are much more challenging to implement, particularly with regards to the durability of the cell component materials. This paper overviews the drivers behind the interest in high-temperature PEMFC, and the challenges in developing novel materials to enable high-temperature PEMFC, including cell component durability (catalysts, polymer, bipolar plates, etc.), candidate polyelectrolytes for the electrode catalyst layer, and material compatibility in novel membrane electrode assembly (MEA), and provides an insight into the material research and development for PEMFC.  相似文献

A molybdenum nitride diffusion coating has been prepared on the surface of AISI 304 stainless steel (304 SS) by plasma surface diffusion alloying method as bipolar plate for proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). X-ray diffraction data shows that the molybdenum nitride is face-centered-cubic Mo2N phase. The results of scanning electron microscopy in combination with energy-dispersive X-ray analysis spectrometer indicate that the as-prepared molybdenum nitride diffusion coating consists of a ∼3.5 μm surface layer (molybdenum nitride) and a ∼0.5 μm subsurface layer (Mo and N solid solution). In addition, the average contact angle with water for modified 304 SS is 91°, demonstrating the better hydrophobic property of the surface modified 304 SS as compared to the untreated ones with average contact angle of 68°. Potentiodynamic and potentiostatic testing in simulated PEFMC operating conditions (0.05 M H2SO4 + 2 ppm F solution at 70 °C purged with either hydrogen or air) as well as interfacial contact resistance (ICR) measurement imply that the molybdenum nitride modified 304 SS exhibits improved corrosion resistance and promising ICR.  相似文献

Proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell performance is directly related to the flow channel design on bipolar plates. Power gains can be found by varying the type, size, or arrangement of channels. The objective of this paper is to present two new flow channel patterns: a leaf design and a lung design. These bio-inspired designs combine the advantages of the existing serpentine and interdigitated patterns with inspiration from patterns found in nature. Both numerical simulation and experimental testing have been conducted to investigate the effects of two new flow channel patterns on fuel cell performance. From the numerical simulation, it was found that there is a lower pressure drop from the inlet to outlet in the leaf or lung design than the existing serpentine or interdigitated flow patterns. The flow diffusion to the gas diffusion layer was found be to more uniform for the new flow channel patterns. A 25 cm2 fuel cell was assembled and tested for four different flow channels: leaf, lung, serpentine and interdigitated. The polarization curve has been obtained under different operating conditions. It was found that the fuel cell with either leaf or lung design performs better than the convectional flow channel design under the same operating conditions. Both the leaf and lung design show improvements over previous designs by up to 30% in peak power density.  相似文献

The lower temperature chromizing treatment is developed to modify 316L stainless steel (SS 316L) for the application of bipolar plate in proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). The treatment is performed to produce a coating, containing mainly Cr-carbide and Cr-nitride, on the substrate to improve the anticorrosion properties and electrical conductivity between the bipolar plate and carbon paper. Shot peening is used as the pretreatment to produce an activated surface on stainless steel to reduce chromizing temperature. Anticorrosion properties and interfacial contact resistance (ICR) are investigated in this study. Results show that the chromized SS 316L exhibits better corrosion resistance and lower ICR value than those of bare SS 316L. The chromized SS 316L shows the passive current density about 3E−7 A cm−2 that is about four orders of magnitude lower than that of bare SS 316L. ICR value of the chromized SS 316L is 13 mΩ cm2 that is about one-third of bare SS 316L at 200 N cm−2 compaction forces. Therefore, this study clearly states the performance advantages of using chromized SS 316L by lower temperature chromizing treatment as bipolar plate for PEMFC.  相似文献

The metal bipolar plates (BPs) have replaced the graphite BPs in vehicle‐used proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stack because of their high volume power density. To investigate the durability of metal BP stack, this paper performed a durability test of 2000 hours on a 10‐cell metal BP fuel cell stack. The degradations of the average voltage and individual cell voltage in fuel cell stack were analyzed. To investigate the degradation mechanism, the stack was disassembled and the morphologies and compositions of no. 1, no. 5, and no. 10 cells after 2000 hours were characterized by SEM, TEM, and ASS. The results indicated that at 800 mA/cm2, the voltage decay rate is 42.303 μV/hour and the voltage decay percentage of the stack is 14.34% after 2000 hours according to the linearly fitting result. According to the US Department of Energy (DOE) definition of fuel cell stack life, only the voltage decay rate of OCV and the tenth cell is lower than the maximum voltage degradation rates of 10 000 hours. The decreases of homogeneity of stack were the main reason for its performance degradation. Especially for the tenth cell, its performance has almost no drop. The main failure reason of this metal BP stack is structural design rather than metal corrosion. The losses of Pt catalyst and C supporting are the main reason of performance degradation.  相似文献
