The improvements in disk speeds have not kept up with improvements in processor and memory speeds. Many techniques have been proposed and utilized to maximize the bandwidths of storage devices. These techniques have proven useful for conventional data, but when applied to multimedia data, they tend to be insufficient or inefficient due to the diversified data types, bandwidth requirements, file sizes and structures of complex objects of multimedia data. In this paper, we discuss the design of an efficient multimedia object allocation strategy that strives to achieve the expected retrieval rates and I/O computational requirements of objects; and also effectively balances the loads on the storage devices. We define a multimedia object model, describe the multimedia object and storage device characteristics, the classification of the multimedia objects according to their I/O requirements, and the fragmentation strategies. We use a bipartite graph model for mapping of fragments to storage devices. A cost function based on a disk utilization per allocated space, the amount of free space, and the bandwidth of a storage device is used to determine the optimal allocation for an object's data.  相似文献

If perceptually relevant multimedia methods with guaranteed performance are not developed soon, there is no hope that the problem of multimedia information overload is effectively solved. Research is needed to handle images, music, video, and 3D models, with methods that guarantee robustness, invariance, efficiency, etc., and are also perceptually and cognitively relevant. The rapidly growing interest in building multimedia tools and applications has created a need for the development of multimedia database management systems (MMDBMSs) as a tool for efficient organization, storage and retrieval of multimedia objects. We begin with a word about traditional database management systems (DBMSs). Then we present an overview of the MMDBMS research issues, challenges, methods, models, and architectures. We review the state of the art and research contributions from related disciplines. Finally, we consider possibilities and probabilities for MMDBMS research in the future.  相似文献

Dynamic phase-spaces are suggested as a way of designing and implementing interactive multimedia systems. A dynamic phase-space is a space of properties overlayed with dynamics. The space is “decorated” with multimedia resources such as pictures, music, sound-effects, speech, and movies. This architecture may help resolve the basic problem of interactive systems, namely that both user and author need to influence the system. If the user is passive, the system is not interactive, but if the author has no power, no interesting narratives can be told. But how can two or more people influence the same system at the same time? The solution presented in the paper is that the system objects are controlled by a global dynamics and neither party is allowed to influence the objects directly; they may only influence objects indirectly by perturbing the global dynamics. In this way, contradictory inputs from user and author have a well-defined solution. The paper describes an experimental museum installation that implements these ideas. In addition, a set of interactive rhetorical patterns are defined and exemplified. The main theoretical inspiration of the system is Thom's catastrophe theory, although it is not used in a literal sense.  相似文献

Multimedia mail     
Electronic mail for traditional text exchange as asynchronous communication means between computer users is widely built upon in many application areas. Whereas Multimedia-Mail systems – including text, graphics, still images, audio, video and documents – were limited to isolated communities – at least two very promising approaches are being under development: the MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension), an extension of Internet Mail as well as the Multimedia Teleservice based on CCITT Recommendation X.400(88) being under development within the BERKOM project funded by the German TELEKOM. The store-and-forward mechanism inherent to electronic mail is complemented in the later one by an additional exchange mechanism allowing the resolution of references to message content, e.g. video. Such references may be put into a message in place of the content itself. Internet/MIME and OSI/X.400, their interworking, asynchronous information server access via Multimedia-Mail, as well as possible future developments especially in the area of asynchronous Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) are discussed.  相似文献

自动向量化编译是利用处理器的多媒体扩展指令集提升多媒体程序性能的理想工具.但目前的研究不能有效加速实际程序.其主要原因是:普通算术操作的向量化不一定有性能提升;而多媒体典型操作因为其在源代码中表现形式多样而不能充分向量化.为了解决这一问题,文章对经典向量化算法进行改进以灵活统一地向量化这两类操作.主要的改进是增加了两个步骤:统一操作的不同表现形式和识别有价值的向量化操作.改进后的算法可以充分利用指令集生成高效代码,从而对实际多媒体程序拥有良好效果.此外,该算法可扩展性也很强.  相似文献
