Infrared laser puncture in the treatment of facial neuritis

Overall eighty-seven patients with facial neuritis [correction of paralysis] received multimodality treatment involving infrared laser acupuncture procedures. The unit "Biomed-001" operating at wavelength 890 nm with intensity 20 mW served as a source of laser light. The acupuncture points (with 10 to 15 points in each treatment session, duration of exposure being 1 to 3 min) were selected according to principles of traditional Chinese medicine. One course of the infrared laser therapy acupuncture treatments is 12 to 16 sessions. The described treatment option applied in the above patients population was associated with a good clinical effect confirmed by results of studies made with the aid of electrophysiological modalities.     

For an updated acupuncture

The author proposes an acupuncture which is characterized by its complete break with the ancient chinese physiopathology and its concepts of "acupuncture points" (in the old sense of the term) of "meridians", "energies", "ying-yang" etc.. This process of renewal of the practice and the theory has been coined "contemporary acupuncture". Its originality stands out in comparison with most teachings of acupuncture which have remained faithful to traditional acupuncture. Contemporary acupuncture creates bridges between acupunture and classical medicine. It offers simple therapeutic gestures to general practitioners. Acupuncture acts, from a clinical point of view, particularly through the following forms of action: a) a relaxing action on striated muscle; b) an anti-inflammatory action on the ligaments; c) an antidepressant and anxiolytic action.     

The acupuncture system and the liquid crystalline collagen fibers of the connective tissues

We propose that the acupuncture system and the DC body field detected by western scientists both in here in the continuum of liquid crystalline collagen fibers that make up the bulk of the connective tissues. Bound water layers on the collagen fibers provide proton conduction pathways for rapid intercommunication throughout the body, enabling the organism to function as a coherent whole. This liquid crystalline continuum mediates hyperreactivity to allergens and the body's responsiveness to different forms of subtle energy medicine. It constitutes a "body consciousness" working in tandem with the "brain consciousness" of the nervous system. We review supporting evidence from biochemistry, cell biology, biophysics and neurophysiology, and suggest experiments to test our hypothesis.     

The basal electrical skin resistance of acupuncture points in normal subjects

The inhibitory component of the skin against given electrical current, also called as the electrical skin resistance, is subject to change in response to many factors, especially pain. In order to find out more definite relationship between pain and skin resistance, one should make measurement in the state devoid of any external disturbing stimuli to get the "basal skin resistance (BSR)", which is known to be different from point to point on body surface. Also, the "active points" have more consistent BSR characters than other points and most of them share same locations with "acupuncture points" which is easy to localize accurately and repeatedly in normal subject. Therefore, the comparison of BSR of certain acupuncture points of normal subject and pain-suffering subjects is expected to be able to figure out any pain-induced BSR changes. Our measurement at 16 acupuncture points (asymmetrical 8 pairs) of 10 normal subjects showed inconsistently asymmetrical distribution of the BSR values with significant order among themselves including left SP (spleen)-6 at their lowest position, but neither the measuring system itself nor any of the 16 points was statistically reliable enough for diagnostic purposes. So the measuring device needs to be improved with after evolution, and more acupuncture points need to be explored to complete our pain-related BSR map. In addition, the meaning of the above BSR distribution pattern is waiting to be explained through such efforts.     

The drive for professionalization in acupuncture: a preliminary view from the San Francisco Bay area

Although various biomedical physicians and chiropractors now employ acupuncture, generally as an adjunct therapy to their practices, acupuncture is quickly evolving into a professionalized heterodox medical system in various areas of the United States. This process has overlapped considerably with the rise of the holistic health movement. Acupuncture particularly obtained public recognition and political legitimation in California, where about one half of all the licensed acupuncturists in the U.S. presently practice. In part drawing upon case studies that various students conducted in a course titled "Medical Pluralism in North America and Europe" that one of the authors taught at Berkeley in the spring of 1994, this paper examines several aspects of the drive for professionalization within acupuncture in the San Francisco Bay area, one of the major centers of acupuncture in the U.S. Other major centers of the holistic health movement include New York, Boston, Washington, DC, Houston, Seattle, and Santa Fe. It considers two dimensions involved in the professionalization of acupuncture: (1) the creation of schools of traditional Chinese medicine and acupressure and (2) accommodation to the biomedical model. The essay also explores the health policy implications of the emergence of acupuncture as a professionalized heterodox medical system that views itself as an alternative or complementary form of primary health care.     

Leptin as a metabolic regulator during fetal and neonatal life and in childhood and adolescence

Body weight is regulated by a feedback loop in which peripheral signals report nutritional information to an integratory center in the brain. The cloning of the ob gene is consistent with this concept and suggests that body fat content in adult rodents is regulated by a negative feedback loop centered in the hypothalamus/1-8/. In a recent report, two severely obese children with congenital leptin deficiency due to a homozygous frame-shift mutation involving the deletion of a single guanine nucleotide in codon 133 of the ob gene have been described. This discovery provides the first genetic evidence that leptin is an important regulator of energy balance in humans. However, it has become increasingly clear that apart from leptin's function in the central nervous system and in regulation of energy balance, leptin also acts in the periphery and might be important as a hormone modulating processes in regard to reproduction, glucose metabolism and insulin resistance, as well as growth and development of many tissues and organs either directly or indirectly. This report reviews some of the topics of leptin research that are of particular importance and relevance for pediatric and adolescent medicine and for pediatric endocrinology in particular.     

Current status and future trends for material flow analysis applications at CSC

Material Flow Analysis（MFA） is a crucial instrument for sustainable development and creating industrial ecology system.MFA studies could balance and analyze the sources,flows,and consumes of specific materials or substances.The results of MFA studies could support the strategies or decisions making for energy, resource,and waste management,especially achieving sustainable resource management.At CSC,the dynamic simulating software,STELLA,is used to develop a MFA model for scenario analysis.CSC also uses the freeware STAN 2.0 as a tool for visualizing and simulating material flows and stocks.Case studies of greenhouse gases MFA for integrated steel works are conducted.The results showed that the carbon content of hot-metal is an important hidden flow for balance analysis,and the different GHG emission scenarios and mitigation action scenarios are assessed.In addition,the Iron-making GHG I/O MFA Model,based on worldsteel Global Steel Sector Approach（GSSA）,is developed for calculating the CO₂ and energy intensity of coke making,sintering,and BF processes.This MFA model was used to analyze the CO₂ reduction potential for iron-making process.The cases conducted for MFA applications at CSC were such as greenhouse gas,zinc,etc.In the future,CSC is going to develop a "CSC Environment Management and Decision Supporting System" which combine MFA,LCA（life cycle assessment）,and environment risk assessment.This supporting system expects to promoting energy efficiency and best resource use,supporting environment policymaking,creating environmental information value,etc.     

Wound infection. A failure of wound healing caused by an imbalance of bacteria

Infection in a wound, like infection elsewhere in the body, is a manifestation of a disturbed host-bacteria equilibrium in favor of the bacteria. This not only elicits a systemic septic response but actually inhibits the multiple processes involved in the wound healing scheme. Each process involved in healing is affected when bacteria proliferate in a wound. Wound infection, whether in an intentional operative incision, an acute traumatic laceration, or a chronic pressure ulcer, results when bacteria indigenous to the patient or exogenous to the wound achieve dominance over the systemic and local factors of host resistance. To be able to prevent and manage wound infections requires an understanding of how each prophylactic or therapeutic maneuver works to maintain or re-establish the bacteria-host balance. Only when this equilibrium is in balance can the normal processes of wound healing proceed to give a satisfactory healing trajectory.     

The cultural production of Bioterapia: psychic healing and the natural medicine movement in Slovakia

Despite powerful opposition, natural medicine (NM) has achieved a toe-hold in the state-run biomedical system in the Slovak Republic. The physician-leader of the NM movement hopes to leverage his ministerial post as NM 'supreme expert' and his interlocking NM clinical and research facilities to achieve a complex, unified health care system under control of medical doctors. This health care model simultaneously reinforces biomedical hegemony and decenters classical medicine by substituting a bioenergetical paradigm. NM includes, among other diagnostic and healing modalities, acupuncture, herbal therapies, bee therapy, reflexology, iridology. However, its paradigmatic form is bioterapia, the focus of this paper. Bioterapia is a form of psychic healing or therapeutic touch. According to its practitioners, it is based on bioenergetic and information-processing principles. Conceptually, bioterapia unifies psyche, soma and energy dimensions of the human body and situates the human organism in an extended transpersonal social, physical and cosmological environment. Bioterapia is a scientized and medicalized reconstruction of a folk healing tradition whose appropriation simultaneously secularized and re-sacralized this tradition by re-locating its practice from lay healers to medical doctors, from the religious domain to the venerated scientific domain, from deviant science to normal science. The reconfiguration into bioterapia as part of the creation of an academic secular parapsychology in the former Soviet Bloc in the late 1960s, illustrates the use of the privileged discourse of science for a cultural production that seems to have both supported and subverted the regime.

Intestinal "bioavailability" of solutes and water: we know how but not why

Only minimal quantities of ingested and normally secreted solutes and water are excreted in the stool. This near 100% bioavailability means that the diet and kidneys are relatively more important determinants of solute, water and acid-base balance than the intestine. Intestinal bioavailability is based on excess transport capacity under normal conditions and the ability to adapt to altered or abnormal conditions. Indeed, the regulatory system of the intestine is as complex, segmented and multi factorial as in the kidney. Alterations in the rate and intestinal site of absorption reflect this regulation, and the diagnosis and treatment of various clinical abnormalities depend on the integrity of intestinal absorptive processes. However, the basis for this regulation an bioavailability are uncertain. Perhaps they had survival value for mammals, a phylogenic class that faced the twin threats of intestinal pathogens and shortages of solutes and water.     

干熄焦余热回收与转化系统的效率分析

 根据某钢厂的干熄焦余热回收与利用系统的工艺流程,绘制了能流图和流图。采用热平衡和平衡对干熄焦系统的余热转化效率状况进行研究。结果表明,干熄炉、余热锅炉的热效率分别为82.39%、67.35%,效率分别为82.13%、65.77%,整个系统的热效率和效率分别为74.33%、55.32%。通过分析发现,影响余热回收和利用的主要因素为干熄炉和余热锅炉的内部换热损失,对此提出了一些优化措施,以提高干熄焦系统的能量利用效率。     

Physicians and other practitioners of acupuncture in Norway--education, theoretical orientation and practice

We conducted a survey for the purpose of obtaining information on training, theoretical orientation and practice among various categories of practitioners of acupuncture in Norway. Particular attention was paid to physicians, compared with other groups of practitioners. A questionnaire was sent to 161 persons who had attended Norwegian Medical Acupuncture Seminars (Norske legers akupunkturkurs) and to 274 persons found under "Acupuncture" in the Yellow Pages of the telephone directory. The response rate was 80%, questionnaires being returned by 298 practitioners. A significantly higher percentage of physicians, as opposed to other practitioners, had less than 120 hours of acupuncture training. 30% of the physicians, compared to 60% in other groups, had more than 10 acupuncture consultations a week. Physicians performed only a relatively small number of different acupuncture methods. There was a relatively high number of men among the acupuncturists. Hence, acupuncture seems to be a practice with masculine appeal. 67% of the physicians used one or more Chinese medical concepts associated with acupuncture. 45% stated that they found non-scientific explanations for how acupuncture works reliable. We therefore argue that one can identify parallel processes in the development of acupuncture. Some elements of acupuncture have been integrated in a scientifically defined reality. At the same time, this survey indicates another process: it shows that many practitioners use traditional Chinese medical concepts. This may indicate that some practitioners have changed their view on what constitutes a reliable picture of reality.

阐述了用影响系数法做现场动平衡的基本原理及其计算方法 ,指出常规的带通方法对动平衡振动信号处理后确定的振幅和相位往往是不稳定的 ,同时提出了用相干平均的办法解决该问题。理论分析和现场实践均表明 ,这一方法是非常有效的。     

Hot rolling pre-heating furnace model optimization technology

Furnace area is regarded as looper between casting and hot rolling,which is very important for material flow balance and production organization as well as temperature regulation etc.In particular,when dealing with energy saving and emission reduction and heating quality improving,pre_heating furnace is paid more attention.The radical target for preheating furnace is to transfer heating energy at the least cost. As we know,the preheating furnace is a dissipation system to obey conservation of energy law,that is to say that input energy always equals to output energy,in the meantime,the whole energy consuming is not reversible.Therefore increasing the efficiency of using energy is uppermost.In this paper,heating transfer efficiency is analysed and mathematical expression is given based on conservation of energy law.Typical optimal methods to improve preheating furnace transfer efficiency coming from foreign factories are presented.According to these methods,every furnace zone temperatures as control variable,target discharging temperature and temperature difference in slab thickness and the temperature between neighbouring zones as well as zone temporary temperature as restrictions,minimal energy consuming as optimizing target.Baosteel preheating furnace model structure and the complicated mapping relation of control parameter set and state set and aim set are presented.Important basic models in the preheating furnace model system are analysed including temperature tracking model and temperature forecasting model and discharging pacing model and slab heating curve.First slab temperature model structure and its peripheric parameter are introduced;second two pacing models are given including timing pacing mode using fixed discharging interval and mill pacing control mode using mill rolling pacing while Baosteel pacing forecasting model using long term and short term forecasting mode) is given;third a heating curve mathematical model considering heating quality and rolling pace and energy consuming is presented;in the end summary is done and the future way is lighted.Baosteel heating model including slab and billet and steel ingot have been developed,the actual applications show a good effect.The future woks include working procedure saving energy and system saving energy considering " Oder and rule" to achieve system harmony and rhythmization.Baosteel Blooming furnaces scheduling system is very useful for smooth production and saving energy.     

Unconventional therapy in Pennsylvania practices

The public's interest in "alternative" medicine is well documented, and recent attempts to integrate unconventional therapies into conventional medical practices have been widely publicized Pennsylvania physicians have reacted cautiously but are showing increasing interest. This article summarizes the perspectives of physicians who employ at least some of what they prefer to call "complementary" or "adjunctive" therapies-including acupuncture, hypnosis, and herbal remedies.     

Radiation-chemical modification of dermal collagen in the presence of moisture

Forty-two patients who were to undergo plastic surgical procedures were asked whether they would accept acupuncture as a substitute for local anesthesia. Eight patients agreed to acupuncture; one of these had 2 operative procedures with acupuncture. Five of the 9 procedures were successful; the remaining 4 required conversion to local anesthesia. After interviewing the patients, we felt that the success of "acupuncture anesthesia" was largely dependent on patient motivation, and that a patient may experience pain during surgical procedures without any change in facial expression or vital signs. We concluded that "acupuncture anesthesia" is of little value in our patient population at present. Its results are unpredictable; therefore, we anticipate that patient acceptance will be small.     

Impaired brain microcirculation may trigger Alzheimer's disease

A working hypothesis on the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is presented. The model is based on recent ultrastructural and classic histologic findings showing extensive and characteristic distortion of brain capillaries in Alzheimer brains. Brain capillary distortion induces normal laminar flow to become microturbulent or "disturbed", an outcome which over the course of many years can modify hemorheologic and hemodynamic flow patterns. As flow patterns become disturbed, micronutrient delivery to the brain is reduced thus compromising neurono-glial interaction. Catabolic outflow of CNS waste products is also depressed. When ischemic sensitive neurons, particularly in the CA1 sector, are unable to meet energy demands from lowered energy supply, they release astroglial mitogens signalling reactive astrocytes to proliferate. The resulting neuronal energy crisis is consequently complicated by the increased density of reactive astrocytes which ostensibly contribute to senile plaque development and neurofibrillary tangle formation as competition for nerve tissue space increases. The suboptimal delivery of glucose, oxygen, essential nutrients and protease regulators in AD brain becomes progressively unpredictable and in time yields to a linear decline of neurochemical, morphologic and cognitive functions.
