Four lactating dairy cows that were ruminally and duodenally cannulated were used in an experiment with a 4 x 4 Latin square design to determine the effects of the substitution of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) from forage with NDF from wheat middlings, corn gluten feed, or a blend of distillers dried grains and hominy. Dietary crude protein and NDF averaged 18 and 31%, respectively, for the diet with 71.2% of the NDF from forage (control diet) and for diets with 55% of the NDF from forage (by-product diets). The substitution of NDF from these by-products for forage NDF did not affect dry matter intake (20.1 kg/d) or digestibility of organic matter. Total tract digestibility of acid detergent fiber was lower for cows fed the diet containing a blend of distillers dried grains and hominy than for cows fed the diet containing corn gluten feed. Microbial crude protein synthesis, milk production (23.9 kg/d), and milk fat percentage were similar for all cows, regardless of diet. Cows fed the diets containing wheat middlings or a blend of distillers dried grains and hominy had reduced ruminal pH compared with that of cows fed the diet containing corn gluten feed or the control diet. Diets containing 55% of total NDF from forage with 31% of total NDF from corn gluten feed, wheat middlings, or a blend of distillers dried grains and hominy can supply sufficient effective fiber to maintain normal ruminal function.  相似文献

The acid detergent lignin and Klason lignin methods were compared for their correlation with forage digestibility. Thirty-six forages, including C3 legumes and C3 and C4 grasses, were analyzed for sulfuric acid detergent lignin, Klason lignin, and in vitro digestibilities of dry matter (DM) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF). Twenty of these forages were also fed to lambs at restricted intake for measurement of DM and NDF digestibilities. Lignin concentrations determined by the two lignin methods were positively correlated, and the Klason lignin value was always greater than the acid detergent lignin concentration. The largest differences were observed for grass forages. Digestibilities of forage DM and NDF were negatively correlated with both lignin methods for the in vitro system and the lamb digestibility trials. The degree of correlation for the two lignin methods with digestibility was generally similar across all forages and within forage classes. Slopes of linear regressions of digestibility on lignin concentration did not differ between legumes and grasses. Although the sulfuric acid detergent lignin and Klason lignin procedures gave very different estimates of forage lignin concentration, they were similarly correlated with digestibility and should yield predictions of forage digestibility that have similar accuracy.  相似文献

Tropical corn silage was compared with sorghum silage as a basal forage in the diets of high producing dairy cows. Sorghum and tropical corn silages were each included in place of ground corn at incremental concentrations in the experimental diets. Eight separate diets were fed, four diets containing each silage ranging in forage neutral detergent fiber (NDF) from approximately 25 to 31% and ranging in total NDF from approximately 41 to 45%. Diets were arranged in a 2 x 4 factorial design and were fed to lactating cows (n = 24; pretrial mean milk production = 39 kg/d; body weight = 656 kg; and days in milk = 81). As concentrations of dietary NDF increased, intake and milk production decreased linearly. The impact of dietary NDF on intake was greater for diets based on tropical corn silage than for diets based on sorghum silage. Energy intake and milk production were reduced, but cows consumed more fiber when challenged with higher dietary concentrations of fiber. The in vitro rate and extent of digestion of dietary samples were correlated with intake response. The rate of in vitro fiber digestion was slower for samples that contained tropical corn silage than for samples that contained sorghum silage. In vivo digestibility measurements were influenced by intake and dietary composition. Results of this trial indicated that sorghum silage can have equal or slightly greater nutritional value than tropical corn silage when these forages are fed at equal concentrations of dietary fiber.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to determine the effects of dietary NDF on apparent ileal and fecal digestibility and portal flux of nitrogen (N) and amino acids, and on N retention in growing pigs. In four equal portions (at 0600, 1200, 1800, and 2400) barrows on Treatment B received a basal diet, based on casein, cornstarch, and dextrose, at a feeding level of 2.6 times energy for maintenance. Barrows on Treatment B+NDF received an additional amount of 15% (wt/wt) of purified wheat bran NDF (pNDF). In Exp. 1, four ileally cannulated barrows (40 to 75 kg) were used in a crossover arrangement comprising two treatments and three periods. The addition of pNDF decreased ileal N digestibility from 94.1 to 88.9% (P < .001), whereas ileal digestibility of most amino acids was 2 to 5.5 percentage units lower (P < .001). Utilization of ileally digested N increased from 64 to 72% with the addition of pNDF, presumably because of the contribution of pNDF to the energy supply. In Exp. 2, three barrows (30 to 54 kg) fitted with catheters in the portal vein and the mesenteric vein and artery were used in a crossover arrangement comprising two treatments and five periods. Portal absorption of nutrients was derived by multiplying the porto-arterial plasma concentration differences by portal vein plasma flow. The pNDF did not significantly affect the absorption of ileally digested amino acids and the portal flux of ammonia and urea. The results showed that addition of NDF reduced amino acid digestibility, but not the portal flux of digested amino acids, and NDF energy presumably improved utilization of ileally digested amino acids.  相似文献

The objective of the study was to determine the effects of dietary fat source on duodenal flow, apparent absorption, and milk fat incorporation of trans-C18:1 fatty acids. Four ruminally and duodenally cannulated multiparous Holsteins cows in mid to late lactation were fed a basal diet containing 36% corn silage, 24% alfalfa haylage, and 40% concentrate (dry matter basis). Diets contained 0% supplemental fat (control diet), 3.7% high oleic sunflower oil, 3.7% high linoleic sunflower oil, or 3.7% partially hydrogenated vegetable shortening; treatments were administered in a 4 x 4 Latin square design with 3-wk experimental periods. The flow of trans-C18:1 to the duodenum was higher for cows fed diets supplemented with fat than for cows fed the control diet (283 vs. 64 g/d). Incomplete biohydrogenation accounted for the increased flow of trans-C18:1 to the duodenum in cows fed diets containing high oleic and high linoleic sunflower oil. Increased flow of trans-C18:1 in cows fed the diet containing partially hydrogenated vegetable shortening most likely originated from the trans-C18:1 in the diet. Milk fat percentages were 3.48, 3.07, 3.18, and 3.38% for cows fed the control diet and diets containing high oleic sunflower oil, high linoleic sunflower oil, and vegetable shortening, respectively. Milk trans-C18:1 increased from 2.9 to 11.2% of the total fatty acids for cows fed the control diet and the diets supplemented with fat, respectively. Milk trans-C18:1 were equal across all diets supplemented with fat. Ruminal and total tract digestion of organic matter, neutral detergent fiber, and N did not change with fat supplementation. Results showed that trans-C18:1 is increased in the milk of cows with reduced milk fat; however, excessive amounts of trans-C18:1 in milk do not necessarily correspond directly to milk fat depression.  相似文献

Fourteen midlactation Holstein cows were used in an 80-d study to examine supplementation strategies during intensive rotational grazing. Factors examined were the concentration of protein in the supplement [12 or 16% crude protein (CP) on a dry matter basis] and the amount of supplement offered (6.4 or 9.6 kg/d per cow). The supplement was offered in equal portions three times daily after milking. Pasture, composed of alfalfa (Medicago sativa) and orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata), was divided into 27 0.16-ha paddocks that were grazed for 12 to 24 h. Intake of forage tended to increase as CP in the supplement increased but was unaffected by the amount of supplement offered. Intakes of organic matter and dry matter and the digestion of these nutrients in the total tract increased as CP in the supplement increased and as the amount of supplement increased. Ruminal pH and concentrations of volatile fatty acids were unaffected by treatments, but concentrations of NH3 N increased as CP in the supplement increased. An increase in CP resulted in a greater intake and flow of total N to the duodenum. The flow of microbial N to the duodenum and the efficiency of microbial protein synthesis were unaffected by treatment. Flows of total amino acids and essential amino acids to the duodenum tended to increase as CP in the supplement increased. Yield of fat-corrected milk and concentrations of fat and protein in milk were unaffected by treatment. These results suggested that the supply and digestion of nutrients in grazing dairy cows may be improved through an increase in the CP concentration of the supplement or the amount of supplement offered. However, effects on the yield of milk and milk components may be small.  相似文献

Effects of supplemental Jet-Sploded canola seed in the diets of dairy cows on milk yield and composition and blood metabolite concentrations were investigated. Twenty multiparous and 5 primiparous midlactation Holstein cows were assigned to treatments following a 3-wk covariate period; cows were then on the treatments for 70 d. Ten of the cows had previously been fitted with rumen cannulas. Five concentrate mixtures containing 0, 7.5, 15, 22, or 29% Jet-Sploded canola seed (Simons Feed Co., Quimby, IA) (equivalent to 0, 2.66, 5.33, 7.81, and 10.30% added fat, respectively) were formulated by substituting Jet-Sploded canola seed for barley and canola meal. Diets consisted of 25% alfalfa silage, 25% whole-crop oat silage, and 50% of one of the concentrate mixtures (dry matter basis). An increase in the amount of dietary fat from Jet-Sploded canola seed did not influence feed intake, milk yield or composition, or milk component yields. The inclusion of Jet-Sploded canola seed in the diet increased long-chain fatty acids and inhibited de novo synthesis of medium-chain fatty acids in milk. Mean total volatile fatty acids in the rumen and propionate concentration were reduced in a linear fashion by treatment. The inclusion of Jet-Sploded canola seed in the diets of mid-lactation cows altered rumen and blood metabolite concentrations; however, these changes had minimal effects on yield responses with the exception of milk fatty acid composition and milk protein content.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that the incidence of retained fetal membranes could be reduced by limiting oxidative stress. Sixty-four primigravid heifers (56 Holstein and 8 Jersey) and 80 multiparous cows (64 Holstein and 16 Jersey) were used. A combination of vitamin E or Zn and Fe was fed in a 2 x 2 x 2 factorial arrangement during the last 42 d prepartum. Amounts of supplements per animal were 1000 IU of vitamin E (d, l alpha-tocopheryl acetate), 0.8 g of Zn (Zn-Met and ZnSO4), and 12 g of Fe (FeSO4.7H2O) for Holsteins and 9 g for Jerseys. Neither vitamin E nor Zn directly affected the incidence of retained fetal membranes, but plasma alpha-tocopherol was lower when fetal membranes were retained > 12 h or when vitamin E was not supplemented. Iron had no direct negative effects on reproductive performance, but cows receiving additional Fe had lower unsaturated iron-binding capacity, which, in turn, was also lower in cows that retained fetal membranes. Days to first observed estrus were reduced by supplementation with either vitamin E or Zn. Vitamin E reduced days to first artificial insemination (AI) and tended to reduce days open. Supplemental Zn tended to reduce days to first AI but did not affect days open. Milk production during the first 12 wk and AI per conception were not affected by supplementation with either vitamin E or Zn. Both vitamin E and Zn reduced days to first observed estrus, indicating improved reproductive health during the early postpartum period.  相似文献

The digestive effects of a Saccharomyces cerevisiae culture were investigated. Four cows in early lactation that were fitted with ruminal and duodenal cannulas were used in a crossover design. The diet, which consisted of 60% corn silage and 40% concentrates, was supplemented or not supplemented with a daily dose of 50 g of premix containing 0.5 g of S. cerevisiae (6 x 10(8) cfu/g of premix). Total and ruminal digestibilities of organic matter, duodenal flows of nonmicrobial and microbial N, solid and liquid turnover rates, ruminal protozoal numbers, pH, ammonia N and volatile fatty acid concentrations, and concentrations of some plasma metabolites were not modified by the addition of S. cerevisiae. Ruminal dry matter content increased when S. cerevisiae was supplemented to the diet. In situ ruminal degradabilities of dry matter and neutral detergent fiber from corn stalk and of N from soybean meal were not modified; degradability of acid detergent fiber from corn stalk increased (32.5% vs. 26.3%) with the addition of S. cerevisiae. A short-term increase in N degradation was observed after 4 and 8 h of incubation. This experiment showed no effect of S. cerevisiae on most quantitative digestive events; however, a positive transitory postprandial effect on some parameters of microbial activity was observed.  相似文献

The purpose of this research was to examine the effects of various amounts of CP and RUP on AA flow to the small intestine and milk yield of lactating dairy cows. The first trial was a 5 x 5 Latin square design using five ruminally and duodenally cannulated multiparous cows. Diets contained chopped alfalfa hay, corn silage, high moisture corn, solvent-extracted soybean meal, and specially processed soybean meal (60.2% RUP). Soybean meal replaced high moisture corn to increase dietary CP from 14.5 to 16.5 or 18.5%, and specially processed soybean meal replaced solvent-extracted soybean meal in diets containing 16.5 or 18.5% CP to provide 6.2, 7.3, 6.7, and 8.3% RUP. Increasing dietary CP increased the flows of all AA to the duodenum. Increasing dietary RUP increased flows of Arg, His, Lys, Phe, Asp, and Glu to the duodenum. In a second trial, 36 cows were fed diets similar to those used in trial 1. Increased amounts of RUP in diets tended to increase milk yield because of improved protein status, improved intake of metabolizable energy, or both.  相似文献

An experiment with a multiple Latin square design using 36 midlactation Friesian cows was carried out to determine the effect of fish meal or soybean meal in a supplement fed at two amounts (3.5 or 7 kg/d) with grass silage. The diets were also fed to four ruminally and duodenally cannulated cows to determine digestibility, ruminal fermentation, and nutrient flows. Dry matter intake, milk production, milk constituent yields, and concentrations of protein and lactose were significantly increased by the supplements when provided at 7 kg/d. The supplement containing fish meal increased milk production, protein and lactose yields, and milk protein concentration, but the increases were smaller than those obtained by increasing the amount of supplement fed. Neither the type nor the amount of supplement fed affected digestibility of dry matter or organic matter, and few significant effects on ruminal fermentation were observed. Supplements fed at the higher allowance significantly increased the flow of dry matter, organic matter, all nitrogenous components, and amino acids to the duodenum. The supplement containing fish meal significantly increased the duodenal flow of nonammonia nonmicrobial N and some amino acids. Results indicated that an increase in the concentration of supplement in the diet is more effective in increasing milk production, protein concentration and yield, and flow of amino acids to the duodenum than is increasing the concentration of ruminally undegradable protein in the supplement.  相似文献

Sixty-seven Holstein replacement heifers (19 mo) were fed a standard (59.7% TDN) or a high energy (69.3% TDN) diet until parturition. After parturition, primiparous cows were fed either 0 or 2.8% supplemental tallow for 150 d in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement with prepartum treatments. High energy prepartum increased BW (693.5 vs. 663.7 kg) and body condition scores (3.72 vs. 3.55) at calving. Increased energy density of the diet prepartum did not affect milk yield or composition. Supplemental dietary fat postpartum increased milk yield approximately 1.5 kg/d, but the response was not observed until 7 wk postpartum. Heifers fed the standard diet prepartum and no supplemental fat postpartum had higher DMI than other treatments. Heifers fed high energy prepartum and supplemental fat postpartum lost the greatest BW and body condition from 1 to 5 wk postpartum. Heifers fed high energy diets prepartum had higher concentrations of blood NEFA, BHBA, and liver triglycerides. Increases in BW and body condition scores at calving above approximately 660 kg and 3.5, respectively, do not enhance lactation performance. When 2.8% supplemental fat was fed to primiparous cows, milk yield improved approximately 1.5 kg/d after wk 7 of lactation.  相似文献

Forty-eight lactating Holstein cows averaging 81 d in milk were allotted to eight blocks based on milk yield during the 14-d pretreatment period and randomly assigned to six treatment groups in a 2 x 3 factorial arrangement of treatments for 64 d. Factors were type of sorghum grain processing [dry-rolled vs. steam-flaked; fed at 34% of dry matter (DM) in a total mixed ration (TMR) based on alfalfa] and type of supplemental fat (2.5% of DM as cottonseed oil, tallow, or prilled fatty acids). Compared with dry-rolled sorghum, steam-flaked sorghum did not affect milk yield, fat percentage, or fat yield but did increase milk protein percentage, body weight gains, and estimated net energy for lactation (22%). Fat source did not affect lactational response, but, compared with tallow, prilled fatty acids tended to decrease DM intake. Steam-flaked sorghum, compared with dry-rolled sorghum, increased digestibilities of DM, organic matter, crude protein, and starch, regardless of fat source. The TMR containing prilled fat had lower digestibilities of DM and organic matter than did TMR containing cottonseed oil or tallow; and TMR containing prilled fat had lower digestibilities of crude protein and total fatty acids than did TMR containing tallow. This study showed that steam-flaking of sorghum grain increased milk protein content, body weight gains, and estimated net energy for lactation, regardless of dietary fat source.  相似文献

Forty-two crossbred lambs (33.4 kg initial body weight; twenty-four wethers and eighteen ewes) were used in a 42 d experiment with a 2 x 3 factorial treatment arrangement to determine effects of forage level and source on splanchnic tissue mass. Diets were 250 and 750 g/kg of chopped lucerne (Medicago sativa) (A), ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum)-wheat (Triticum aestivum) (RW) or bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon) (B) hay, with the remainder being maize-based concentrate. Five lambs per treatment were slaughtered at the end of the experiment and measurements made of internal organs and contents of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). Digestible organic matter intake (DOMI) on the 7 d preceding slaughter was 0.89, 0.83, 0.90, 0.83, 0.77 and 0.61 (SE 0.05) kg/d, and live-weight gain was 0.20, 0.17, 0.18, 0.10, 0.10 and 0.07 (SE 0.02) kg/d for diets A-25, RW-25, B-25, A-75, RW-75 and B-75 respectively. Total GIT mass (fresh) was higher (P < 0.05) for 750 than 250 g forage/kg and for B than RW (4.80, 4.57, 5.55, 5.84, 5.99 and 6.91 kg for diets A-25, RW-25, B-25, A-75, RW-75 and B-75 respectively). Non-fat organic matter was 259, 295, 292, 303, 277 and 264 g for the total GIT; 93, 102, 103, 106, 95 and 97 g for the reticulo-rumen (forage level x type (diet A v. diets RW and B) interaction; P < 0.05); and 204, 196, 202, 177, 156 and 127 g for the liver (SE 10) with diets A-25, RW-25, B-25, A-75, RW-75 and B-75 respectively. In summary, differences in properties of forage A and the grasses at 250 g/kg diet may have influenced GIT mass independent of energy intake and digesta mass. Conversely, with 750 g dietary forage/kg, higher digesta mass for diet B than diet RW appeared responsible for high reticulo-rumen mass relative to DOMI. Greater digesta mass for 750 than 250 g forage/kg may have elevated intestinal tissue mass/DOMI with diets A and B but not with diet RW, for which NDF digestibility was highest.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to study the effects of methionine supplementation on ruminal fermentation and digesta kinetics. In Exp. 1, nine ruminally cannulated beef heifers (average initial BW = 527 kg) in a crossover design were fed low-quality grass hay and cottonseed meal with or without 11.4 g of supplemental methionine (polysaccharide-coated). Particulate and fluid kinetics, rate of DM and NDF disappearance, ruminal VFA and NH3 N concentrations, and pH were not altered (P > .10) by supplemental methionine; however, ruminal purine concentration was greater (P < .05) in methionine-supplemented heifers than in unsupplemented heifers. In Exp. 2, 12 ruminally cannulated Holstein steers (average initial BW = 622 kg) grazing a fescue pasture were allotted to one of three groups: no supplemental methionine (CON) or 11.4 g of supplemental methionine fed at 0700 (AM) or at 1200 (PM). Forage intake, particulate kinetics, ruminal fluid kinetics, pH, VFA, and NH3 N concentrations were not altered (P > .10) by supplemental methionine or supplementation time. In situ rate of DM and NDF disappearance was greater (P < .05) in supplemented steers than in CON steers; AM steers exhibited faster (P < .05) rates than PM steers. Overall, methionine supplementation of low-quality forage increased ruminal purine concentration but did not alter in situ fermentation or digesta passage, whereas supplementation at 0700, but not at 1200, of steers grazing fescue forage increased rate of NDF fermentation.  相似文献

Four primiparous Holstein cows were gradually introduced, according to a Latin square design, to four diets obtained from the factorial combination of two forage to concentrate ratios (70:30 and 50:50) and two concentrations of monensin sodium (0 and 300 mg/d per cow). Addition of monensin tended to depress feed intake and milk fat content without affecting milk production and without interactions with forage to concentrate ratios. Ruminal propionate percentage was increased more by the addition of monensin to the low forage diet than by the addition of monensin to the high forage diet. Serum urea and concentrations of nonesterified fatty acids tended to decrease when monensin was added to the high forage diet but did not change when monensin was added to the low forage diet. The results suggested that monensin had moderate positive effects on efficiency of milk production and might have an antiketogenic effect with high forage diets.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to determine the physical, chemical, and microbial properties of turkey cecal droppings and relate them to intake of common dietary components, namely fat, fiber, and the anticoccidial, monensin. Experiment 1 involved collection and analysis of physical and chemical properties of cecal and regular droppings from commercial turkey flocks. Experiment 2 tested the effect of dietary fat, fiber, and monensin on growth performance and cecal activity in male turkeys. Compared to regular excreta, cecal droppings analyzed in Experiment 1 were higher in viscosity and fat content, and lower in dry matter, nitrogen, and fiber content (P < 0.05). High dietary fiber and fat significantly (P < 0.05) improved growth performance in Experiment 2. Prolonged feeding of monensin significantly (P < 0.05) reduced cecal evacuation. Results of chemical composition showed that higher dietary fat and fiber significantly (P < 0.01) reduced the fat percentage of cecal contents, whereas prolonged feeding of monensin increased the fat in both cecal contents and droppings. There was no significant effect of any of the treatments on pH, viscosity, and microbial counts of cecal contents. There is the need to identify and characterize the compound responsible for the high viscosity of cecal droppings.  相似文献

The effects of monensin on the energy metabolism of dairy cows in early lactation were investigated in a large clinical trial that was randomized and double-blinded. A total of 1010 Holstein cows and first lactation heifers were allocated to receive a controlled-release capsule of monensin or a placebo at 3 wk prior to expected calving date. Treatments were randomized across 25 dairy farms located near Guelph, Ontario, Canada. Serum samples obtained at the time of treatment administration and at wk 1, 2, 3, 6, and 9 postcalving were analyzed for beta-hydroxybutyrate, glucose, aspartate aminotransferase, urea, total protein, calcium, and phosphorus. Cows were also assigned a body condition score at the time each sample was obtained. Monensin treatment significantly reduced serum beta-hydroxy-butyrate concentrations at wk 1, 2, and 3 postpartum and significantly raised serum glucose concentrations during wk 1 and 2 of lactation. In addition, monensin treatment significantly reduced the loss of body condition score and decreased serum activity of aspartate aminotransferase during the postpartum period. Concentrations of serum urea were significantly higher during wk 2 and 3 postpartum for the cows that were treated with monensin. Monensin treatment had no effect on the concentrations of calcium, phosphorus, or total protein.  相似文献

Three multiparous Holstein cows in midlactation were fitted with ruminal and duodenal cannulas. Cows were used in an experiment with a 3 x 3 Latin square design to study the effect of corn processing on nutrient flow from the rumen to the duodenum and on ruminal fermentation in lactating cows. Cows were fed diets consisting of 40% forage and 60% concentrate. The only difference in dietary ingredients was the type of processed corn included at 24% of the total diet (as-fed basis). Treatments were dry-rolled corn with a bulk density of 0.54 kg/L and steam-flaked corn with a bulk density of either 0.39 kg/L or 0.31 kg/L. Ruminal fluid pH was not affected by corn processing, but steam-flaking decreased the molar percentage of acetate and increased the molar percentage of propionate. Digestibility of starch in the rumen was not affected by processing. Digestibility of starch entering the duodenum as well as apparent digestibility of starch in the total tract were increased by steam-flaking. Flow of feed and microbial N from the rumen and microbial N efficiency were not affected by grain processing. Yields of milk and milk components as well as composition of milk were not affected by grain processing.  相似文献

Single subcutaneous injection of 1500 IU human chorionic gonadotropin or placebo injections were given at the time of insemination in lactating dairy and beef cows to determine their effects on rates of pregnancy. Pregnancy rates at first service in 161 control and 145 treated dairy cows were 52.8% and 44.8%, respectively. Similar rates for 136 control and 145 treated beef cows were 54.4% and 54.5%.
