This paper deals with a multiuser detector based on a new decorrelating approach for asynchronous uplink DS/CDMA communications in which the QPSK modulation scheme is used in transmission. It is shown here that the receiver proposed is near–far resistant and exhibits a low complexity which allows realtime operation. Performance is expressed in terms of bit error rate (BER) which has been derived by simulations under the assumption of a slowly frequencyselective Rayleigh fading channel.  相似文献

Antenna diversity is an important technique to combat fading and reduce cochannel interference (CCI). In this paper, we present an analytical approach to derive bit error rate (BER) for Optimum Combining (OC) and Maximal Ratio Combining (MRC) in the presence of CCI. The paper has two parts. In the first part, the analysis of BER for OC with two cochannel interferers and MRC with an arbitrary number of interferers is presented for Marray antenna systems under the assumption that the channels of users are independent of each other. In the second part, the analysis of BER for OC and MRC in the presence of one dominant cochannel interferer is presented for dual antenna systems by assuming that the channels of the desired user or cochannel interferer are correlated. For DPSK signal, an exact BER expression is derived. The work presented here also yields an upper bound for BPSK or QAM signal based on the results of Foschini and Salz (1983).  相似文献

This paper presents the performance of a direct sequence spread spectrum acquisition scheme in a mobile terrestrial communications system. The effects of fading, multipath, power control, shadowing, multiple access interference, out-of-cell interference, vehicle speed, voice activity, and sectorization are examined. The acquisition scheme uses noncoherent detection and a parallel search strategy. The analysis is done for the reverse link of a mobile code-division multiple-access (CDMA) system. The purpose of this paper is to derive the acquisition performance of a mobile communications system under practical assumptions, and give realistic capacity estimates based on acquisition performance criteria  相似文献

Traditionally, outage for CDMA cellular systems has been defined as the signal level (or, more precisely, the signal-to-interference ratio (SIR)) falling below a required threshold. In real cellular environments, it is not the instantaneous drop of the signal strength below the threshold that determines outage. It is, in fact, the duration of time below a threshold that determines outage for cellular systems. Moreover, the static analysis of outage precludes the time correlation in the signals which is important in real systems owing to mobility, fading and power control. In this paper, we analyze minimum duration outages for such systems, where outage is defined as an excursion of the SIR below a level for a certain minimum duration. We formulate the outage condition as a level crossing problem and extend asymptotic results from the theory of level crossings to derive analytical results for the probability of outage. This method enables us to include the time correlation of signals in the analysis as well. The validity of the asymptotic results is verified using some exact results as well as simulations. These minimum duration outages have implications in redefining user capacity and handoff performance.  相似文献

In this paper, performance of a pseudonoise (PN) code tracking loop is analysed and simulated for a direct‐sequence/code‐division‐multiple‐access (DS/CDMA) system with imperfect power control in a multipath fading channel. A non‐coherent first‐order delay‐locked loop (DLL) is considered as a PN code tracking loop. Power control error is modelled as a log‐normally distributed random variable. The multipath fading channel is modelled as a two‐ray Rayleigh fading model that is typically applied to land mobile communication environments. The tracking performance of DLL is evaluated in terms of tracking jitter and mean‐time‐to‐lose‐lock (MTLL). From the simulation results, it is shown that for smaller discriminator offset, tracking jitter performance is improved while MTLL performance is degraded. It is shown that large power control error and heavy shadowing substantially degrade the PN tracking performance. Therefore, an accurate power control scheme is very essential to compensate for fading and shadowing for a DS/CDMA system. The extension of analysis to higher‐order loop models is very straightforward. The analysis in this paper can be applied to design the PN code tracking loop for a DS/CDMA system. In this paper, the capture performance of a random access scheme in the presence of Rayleigh fading, shadowing and diversity is studied. The conditional throughput Cn, i.e., the average number of packets which are correctly received per slot, given the number of colliding packets, n, is computed, as well as its limit as n. Some different diversity schemes are compared. Also, retransmission control is considered as a means to enhance the system performance. The stability of the controlled system is directly proved. Finally, the effect of long-term attenuations on the system performance and stability is discussed.  相似文献

This paper discusses design tradeoffs for mixedsignal radio frequency integrated circuit (RF IC) transceivers for wireless applications in terms of noise, signal power, receiver linearity, and gain. During air wave transmission, the signal is corrupted by channel noise, adjacent interfering users, image signals, and multipath fading. Furthermore, the receiver corrupts the incoming signal due to RF circuit nonlinearity (intermodulation), electronic device noise, and digital switching noise. This tutorial paper gives an overview of the design tradeoffs needed to minimize RF noise in an integrated wireless transceiver. Fundamental device noise and the coupling of switching noise from digital circuits to sensitive analog sections and their impact on RF circuits such as frequency synthesizers are examined. Methods to minimize mixedsignal noise coupling and to model substrate noise effects are presented.  相似文献

This paper presents a generalized model of binary phase shift keying (BPSK) direct sequence code division multiple access (DS/CDMA) macrocellular and microcellular sectorized mobile radio systems over Nakagami fading plus lognormal shadowing channels. RAKE receiver, perfect and imperfect sectorization, voice activity monitoring, microscopic and composite microscopic plus macroscopic diversity are considered. The interrelationships among the number of interfering cells, sectorization degree, sectorization imperfection, voice activity factor, fading parameter, microscopic diversity degree, microscopic plus macroscopic diversity degree and the number of users are considered. Numerical results show that voice activity monitoring and sectorization can reduce multiple access interference (MAI). Furthermore, composite microscopic plus macroscopic diversity system can counteract the fast and slow fading components simultaneously.  相似文献

Soft handoff has a special importance to power controlled code division multiple access (CDMA) systems. We introduce a new analytical model for CDMA soft handoff with emphasis on interference statistics at a system level. The relationship between soft handoff and power control is further explored by integrating power control error and shadowing correlation into the model. A new forward link model is also devised to study the effects of soft handoff on forward link performance. It is observed that the performance degradation due to power control error increases with increase in soft handoff region and higher shadowing correlation lowers the interference contribution from nonhandoff mobile stations (MS). It is also found that, unlike the reverse link, the forward performance depends on both given soft handoff setting and system load  相似文献

The empirically oberved fractal or self-similar nature of packet traffic implies heavy tailed queue processes for such traffic. However, based on our simulation analysis using real network data as well as standard models, we have found that the actual losses sustained are remarkably lower than those suggested by the heavy tail distribution. This can be explained by an effect observed in the tail of the histogram of a finite buffer queue process, which we call tail-raising, which contains information pertinent to performance estimation. This effect is also responsible for a significant reduction in packet losses for finite buffer systems, than would be otherwise predicted by the buffer overflow probability for heavy-tailed queues. We define a new parameter X B on the histogram of a queue process for a finite buffer system, to calculate the tail of the queue process based on the information available in the histogram on the finite buffer. We propose an estimator that approximates X B , namely, X min, which is measurable because of the tail-raising effect and has a robust measurement method. The proposed estimator shows promise as a good predictor for performance metrics of queueing systems. We propose an innovative packet loss ratio estimation technique which uses histogram measurements combined with a virtual buffer scheme to find and extrapolate the objective packet loss rate using a binning strategy for histogram measurement, namely, Symmetric Logarithmic Binning (SLB).  相似文献

In this paper, a packet scheduling scheme based on real-time channel conditions and dominant intercell interferer avoidance is proposed, studied and evaluated for reverse links in a time-slotted code division multiple access (CDMA) system. This scheme is implemented by distribution of tags by receivers among transmitters. Each base station issues M(1) tags to M mobile users based on the ranked reverse link gains in every slot. M=1 corresponds to spread-spectrum time division multiplexing mode operation and M1 corresponds to scheduling multiple simultaneous transmissions as in the traditional CDMA systems. The number of issued tags is a system parameter which depends on the expected traffic, the number of cells and the propagation conditions in the network. In the proposed scheme, users who not only have stronger channel gains to their respective home base stations but also cause relatively lower intercell interference are scheduled for transmissions. Different classes of tags can be issued and various scheduling decision rules can be implemented giving flexibility in interference management. Simulation results in shadow and multipath fading environment are presented to show the performance advantage of the proposed scheme.  相似文献

We present a low bandwidth protocol for wireless multimedia terminals targeted towards low power consumption on the terminal side. With the widespread use of portable computing devices, low power has become a major design criterion. One way of minimizing power consumption is to perform all tasks, other than managing hardware for the display and input, on a stationary workstation and exchange information between that workstation and the portable terminal via a wireless link. A protocol for such a system that emphasizes low bandwidth and low power requirements is presented herein. Such a protocol should address the issue of noisy wireless channels. We describe error correction and retransmission methods capable of dealing with burst error noise up to BERs of 10-3. The final average bandwidth required is 140 Kbits/sec for 8bit color applications.  相似文献

In Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) radio environments, the maximum number of supportable users per cell is limited by multipath fading, shadowing, multiple access interference and near-far effects which cause fluctuations of the received power at the base station. In this context, power control and signal detection are essential to provide satisfactory Quality of Service (QoS) and to combat the near-far problem in CDMA systems. In this paper, we raised the uplink power control problem for a generalize asynchronous direct-sequence (DS) CDMA system that explicitly incorporate into the analysis: (1) the propagation delays in the network (generally neglected in the literature), (2) the adverse effect of multipath fading for wireless channels, and (3) the asynchronous transmissions in the uplink channels. This framework is used to propose a distributed power control strategy enhanced with linear multiuser receivers. It is shown that through a proper selection of an error function, the nonlinear coupling among active users is transformed into individual linear loops. A Linear-Quadratic-Gaussian (LQG) power control strategy is derived and compared with other approaches from the literature. Simulation results show that the uplink channel variations do not destroy the stability of these power control structures. However, delays in the closed-loop paths can severely affect the stability and performance of the resulting feedback schemes. It is also shown that the use of multiuser detection at the base station can bring significant improvements to the performance of power control.  相似文献

In order to combat large scale shadowing and distance losses in a land mobile satellite system, an adaptive power control (APC) scheme is essential. Such a scheme, implemented on the uplink ensures that all users' signals arrive at the base station with equal average power as they move within the satellite spot beam-an important requirement in a CDMA system. Because of the lengthy round-trip delay on a satellite link, closed-loop power control systems are only of marginal benefit. Therefore, an open-loop APC scheme is proposed to counteract the effects of shadowing and distance loss. A fairly general channel model, consisting of log-normal shadowing and Rician fading, is assumed. This can be applied to a specific two-state land mobile satellite channel model, involving shadowed intervals with Rayleigh fading and unshadowed intervals with Rician fading. It is found that the power control error can be approximated by a log-normally distributed random variable. To quantify the performance of the APC, the standard deviation of the power control error in decibels is analyzed as a function of the specular power-to-scatter power ratio, the measurement time and the vehicle velocity. Energy efficiency is an important issue in mobile wireless networks since the battery life of mobile terminals is limited. Conservation of battery power has been addressed using many techniques such as variable speed CPUs, flash memory, disk spindowns, and so on. We believe that energy conservation should be an important factor in the design of networking protocols for mobile wireless networks. In particular, this paper addresses energy efficiency in medium access control (MAC) protocols for wireless networks. The paper develops a framework to study the energy consumption of a MAC protocol from the transceiver usage perspective. This framework is then applied to compare the performance of a set of protocols that includes IEEE 802.11, ECMAC, PRMA, MDRTDMA, and DQRUMA*. The performance metrics considered are transmitter and receiver usage times for packet transmission and reception. The time estimates are then combined with power ratings for a Proxim RangeLAN2 radio card to obtain an estimate of the energy consumed for MAC related activities. The analysis here shows that protocols that aim to reduce the number of contentions perform better from an energy consumption perspective. The receiver usage time, however, tends to be higher for protocols that require the mobile to sense the medium before attempting transmission. This paper describes the results of field tests consisting of received signal variations and multipath returns seen by a mobile receiver using direct-sequence (DS) code-division multiple-access (CDMA) waveforms. The experimental data for outdoor (microcellular environment) reveals that the instantaneous received power lost due to fading (sometimes called the fade margin) increases dramatically as the signaling bandwidth decreases below 11 MHz. It also shows that for most outdoor locations the significant multipath was confined primarily to 1s of excess delay with average delay of less than 200 ns. A broader-band CDMA system, having a bandwidth exceeding 10 MHz, could resolve the multipath components and could use a RAKE receiver to further reduce the transmitted power. However, a narrower-band CDMA system could not resolve these multipath components and thereby would suffer signal fading which would have to be compensated by 15 dB or more signal amplification. As a result, a narrower-band CDMA system would interfere with its other users and reduce its user capacity if no other forms of diversity are used. Our results also reveal that at some locations, returns with delays of more than 1s can be seen by the receiver with enough energy that could be collected using a RAKE receiver. However, these locations were found to be confined to a very low probability of existence within a prescribed cell (3-mile radius).  相似文献

A hybrid direct‐sequence/slow frequency hopping code‐division multiple‐access (DS/SFH CDMA) system operating in a Rayleigh fading environment is described and its spectral efficiency is estimated in terms of the theoretically achievable average channel capacity (in the sense of information theory) per user. The analysis covers the operation over a broadcast cellular time‐varying link and leads to a simple novel closed‐form expression for the optimal average spread signal‐to‐interference power ratio (SIR) received by each user based on the maximization of the achieved spectral efficiency. In this paper, we estimated the influence of capture effect over the capacity of IEEE 802.11b DCF within a single picocell. The channel utilization is examined analytically by introducing two capture models based on Rayleigh-distributed envelopes of the captured and the interfering frames divided into two local-mean power classes. Simulations in a pure Rician-faded channel depict the conditions under which both Rayleigh-faded capture models can be used to accurately predict the peak network capacity. Unlike the RTS/CTS handshake access mode, Basic access mode is significantly sensitive to the capture ratio, i.e., the receiver design. The packet size threshold over which it is convenient to switch from Basic to RTS/CTS handshake access scheme is also sensitive to the capture effect.  相似文献

This paper deals with the interaction between a millimeterwavelength plane wave and the human eye. The study has been conducted utilizing the finite difference time domain (FDTD) numerical technique, and an accurate eye model obtained through photographic images of the human head. A partly automatic procedure has been developed to obtain the FDTDcompatible eye model. The dielectric properties of the human tissues at millimeter wavelengths have been extrapolated from experimental data available at lower frequencies and by using Debyes dispersion equation. The power distribution in the exposed eye has been calculated in both conditions of closed and open eye, and the results have been compared with the limits settled by some of the most recognized safety standards for human exposure.  相似文献
