This paper presents the results of investigations on the application of wind, photovoltaic (PV), and hybrid wind/PV power generating systems for utilization as stand-alone systems. A simple numerical algorithm has been developed for generation unit sizing. It has been used to determine the optimum generation capacity and storage needed for a stand-alone, wind, PV, and hybrid wind/PV system for an experimental site in a remote area in Montana with a typical residential load. Generation and storage units for each system are properly sized in order to meet the annual load and minimize the total annual cost to the customer. In addition, an economic analysis has been performed for the above three scenarios and is used to justify the use of renewable energy versus constructing a line extension from the nearest existing power line to supply the load with conventional power. Annual average hourly values for load, wind speed, and insolation have been used  相似文献

In the wake of rising cost of oil and fears of its exhaustion coupled with increased pollution, the governments world-wide are deliberating and making huge strides to promote renewable energy sources such as solar–photovoltaic (solar–PV) and wind energy. Integration of diesel systems with hybrid wind–PV systems is pursued widely to reduce dependence on fossil-fuel produced energy and to reduce the release of carbon gases that cause global climate change. Literature indicates that commercial/residential buildings in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consume an estimated 10–40% of the total electric energy generated. The study reviews research work carried out world-wide on wind farms and solar parks. The work also analyzes wind speed and solar radiation data of East-Coast (Dhahran), KSA, to assess the technical and economic potential of wind farm and solar PV park (hybrid wind–PV–diesel power systems) to meet the load requirements of a typical commercial building (with annual electrical energy demand of 620,000 kWh). The monthly average wind speeds range from 3.3 to 5.6 m/s. The monthly average daily solar global radiation ranges from 3.61 to 7.96 kWh/m2. The hybrid systems simulated consist of different combinations of 100 kW wind machines, PV panels, supplemented by diesel generators. NREL (and HOMER Energy's) HOMER software has been used to perform the techno-economic study. The simulation results indicate that for a hybrid system comprising of 100 kW wind capacity (37 m hub-height) and 40 kW of PV capacity together with 175 kW diesel system, the renewable energy fraction (with 0% annual capacity shortage) is 36% (24% wind + 12% PV). The cost of generating energy (COE, $/kWh) from this hybrid wind–PV–diesel system has been found to be 0.154 $/kWh (assuming diesel fuel price of 0.1$/L). The study exhibits that for a given hybrid configuration, the number of operational hours of diesel generators decreases with increase in wind farm and PV capacity. Attention has also been focused on wind/PV penetration, un-met load, excess electricity generation, percentage fuel savings and reduction in carbon emissions (relative to diesel-only situation) of different hybrid systems, cost break-down of wind–PV–diesel systems, COE of different hybrid systems, etc.  相似文献

In this paper, a stochastic electricity market model is applied to estimate the effects of significant wind power generation on system operation and on economic value of investments in compressed air energy storage (CAES). The model's principle is cost minimization by determining the system costs mainly as a function of available generation and transmission capacities, primary energy prices, plant characteristics, and electricity demand. To obtain appropriate estimates, notably reduced efficiencies at part load, start-up costs, and reserve power requirements are taken into account. The latter are endogenously modeled by applying a probabilistic method. The intermittency of wind is covered by a stochastic recombining tree and the system is considered to adapt on increasing wind integration over time by endogenous modeling of investments in selected thermal power plants and CAES. Results for a German case study indicate that CAES can be economic in the case of large-scale wind power deployment  相似文献

A Monte Carlo based method for predicting the economic performance and reliability of autonomous energy systems consisting of diesel generators and wind energy converters (WECs), is proposed. Several technical constraints are applied, among them the most significant are the limitation of wind power penetration due to both the load demand and a minimum permissible power of the diesel generators. Start up-shutdown costs, two-fuel diesel units and reliability are considered. The proposed method divides the total simulation period into time intervals and for every time interval uses dynamic programming techniques to determine the diesel unit commitment. Results are presented for two Greek islands. It is shown that proper central control of WECs in a system increases significantly the wind energy penetration, which is strongly affected by the way commitment is made  相似文献

Wind–PV–diesel hybrid power generation system technology is a promising energy option since it provides opportunities for developed and developing countries to harness naturally available, inexhaustible and pollution-less resources. The aim of this study is to assess the techno-economic feasibility of utilizing a hybrid wind–PV–diesel power system to meet the load of Al Hallaniyat Island. Hybrid Optimization Model for Electric Renewables software has been employed to carry out the present study. The simulation results indicate that the cost of generating energy (COE) is $0.222 kWh?1 for a hybrid system composed of a 70 kW PV system, 60 kW wind turbine and batteries together with a 324.8 kW diesel system. Moreover, using the same system but without batteries will increase the COE to $0.225 kWh?1, the fuel consumption, the excess energy and the total operating hours for the diesel generators. The PV–wind hybrid option is techno-economically viable for rural electrification.  相似文献

Multisource hybrid power generation systems are a type of representative application of the renewables' technology. In this investigation, wind turbine generators, photovoltaic panels, and storage batteries are used to build hybrid generation systems that are optimal in terms of multiple criteria including cost, reliability, and emissions. Multicriteria design facilitates the decision maker to make more rational evaluations. In this study, an improved particle swarm optimization algorithm is developed to derive these nondominated solutions. Hybrid generation systems under different design scenarios are designed based on the proposed approach. First, a grid-linked hybrid system is designed without incoroprating system uncertainties. Then, adequacy evaluation is conducted based on probabilistic methods by accounting for equipment failures, time-dependent sources of energy, and stochastic generation/load variations. In particular, due to the unpredictability of wind speed and solar insolation as well as the random load variation, time-series models are adopted to reflect their stochastic characteristics. An adequacy evaluation procedure including time-dependent sources, is adopted. Sensitivity studies are also carried out to examine the impacts of different system parameters on the overall design performance.   相似文献

The aim of this study is to determine the costs and carbon emissions associated with operating a hydro-dominated electricity generation system (Vancouver Island, Canada) with varying degrees of wind penetration. The focus is to match the wind resource, system demand and abilities of extant generating facilities on a temporal basis, resulting in an operating schedule that minimizes system cost over a given period. This is performed by taking the perspective of a social planner who desires to find the lowest-cost mix of new and existing generation facilities. Unlike other studies, this analysis considers variable efficiency for thermal and hydro-generators, resulting in a fuel cost that varies with respect to generator part load. Since this study and others have shown that wind power may induce a large variance on existing dispatchable generators, forcing more frequent operation at reduced part load, inclusion of increased fuel cost at part load is important when investigating wind integration as it can significantly reduce the economic benefits of utilizing low-cost wind. Results indicate that the introduction of wind power may reduce system operating costs, but this depends heavily on whether the capital cost of the wind farm is considered. For the Vancouver Island mix with its large hydro-component, operating cost was reduced by a maximum of 15% at a wind penetration of 50%, with a negligible reduction in operating cost when the wind farm capital cost was included.  相似文献

The power management strategy (PMS) plays an important role in the optimum design and efficient utilization of hybrid energy systems. The power available from hybrid systems and the overall lifetime of system components are highly affected by PMS. This paper presents a novel method for the determination of the optimum PMS of hybrid energy systems including various generators and storage units. The PMS optimization is integrated with the sizing procedure of the hybrid system. The method is tested on a system with several widely used generators in off-grid systems, including wind turbines, PV panels, fuel cells, electrolyzers, hydrogen tanks, batteries, and diesel generators. The aim of the optimization problem is to simultaneously minimize the overall cost of the system, unmet load, and fuel emission considering the uncertainties associated with renewable energy sources (RES). These uncertainties are modeled by using various possible scenarios for wind speed and solar irradiation based on Weibull and Beta probability distribution functions (PDF), respectively. The differential evolution algorithm (DEA) accompanied with fuzzy technique is used to handle the mixed-integer nonlinear multi-objective optimization problem. The optimum solution, including design parameters of system components and the monthly PMS parameters adapting climatic changes during a year, are obtained. Considering operating limitations of system devices, the parameters characterize the priority and share of each storage component for serving the deficit energy or storing surplus energy both resulted from the mismatch of power between load and generation. In order to have efficient power exploitation from RES, the optimum monthly tilt angles of PV panels and the optimum tower height for wind turbines are calculated. Numerical results are compared with the results of optimal sizing assuming pre-defined PMS without using the proposed power management optimization method. The comparative results present the efficacy and capability of the proposed method for hybrid energy systems.  相似文献

Battery integrated diesel generation is one of the options for decentralized power production. They are particularly suitable for loads with significant variation in the daily demand. A methodology for the optimum sizing of integrated system involving diesel generator and battery bank for an isolated electrical power generation is proposed in this paper. The proposed methodology is based on the design-space approach involving a time series simulation of the entire system. Based on the proposed approach, for a given load demand, characteristics of the diesel generator and battery bank, a sizing curve is identified on the diesel generator rating vs. storage capacity diagram. The sizing curve helps in identifying all possible feasible system configurations or the design space. Based on the minimum capital cost and the minimum operating cost of the system, the Pareto optimum curve is identified on the system-sizing curve. Optimum system configuration is identified based on the minimum cost of energy through optimal dispatch strategy. Two operating strategies, involving continuous and intermittent operation of the diesel generator are studied and compared. Effect of the load profile on the system sizing is also presented in this paper.  相似文献

Integration of wind machines and battery storage with the diesel plants is pursued widely to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. The aim of this study is to assess the impact of battery storage on the economics of hybrid wind‐diesel power systems in commercial applications by analyzing wind‐speed data of Dhahran, East‐Coast, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (K.S.A.). The annual load of a typical commercial building is 620,000 kWh. The monthly average wind speeds range from 3.3 to 5.6 m/s. The hybrid systems simulated consist of different combinations of 100‐kW commercial wind machines (CWMs) supplemented with battery storage and diesel generators. National Renewable Energy Laboratory's (NREL's) (HOMER Energy's) Hybrid Optimization Model for Electric Renewables (HOMER) software has been employed to perform the economic analysis. The simulation results indicate that for a hybrid system comprising of 100‐kW wind capacity together with 175‐kW diesel system and a battery storage of 4 h of autonomy (i.e. 4 h of average load), the wind penetration (at 37‐m hub height, with 0% annual capacity shortage) is 25%. The cost of generating energy (COE, $/kWh) from this hybrid wind–battery–diesel system has been found to be 0.139 $/kWh (assuming diesel fuel price of 0.1$/L). The investigation examines the effect of wind/battery penetration on: COE, operational hours of diesel gensets. Emphasis has also been placed on un‐met load, excess electricity, fuel savings and reduction in carbon emissions (for wind–diesel without battery storage, wind–diesel with storage, as compared to diesel‐only situation), cost of wind–battery–diesel systems, COE of different hybrid systems, etc. The study addresses benefits of incorporation of short‐term battery storage (in wind–diesel systems) in terms of fuel savings, diesel operation time, carbon emissions, and excess energy. The percentage fuel savings by using above hybrid system is 27% as compared to diesel‐only situation Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Renewable energy power plants, such as wind turbine generator and photovoltaic system, have been introduced in isolated power system recently. The output power fluctuations of wind turbine generator and load deviations result in frequency deviation and terminal voltage fluctuation. Furthermore, these power fluctuations also affect the turbine shafting of diesel generators and gas‐turbine generators, which are the main components of power generation systems in isolated islands. For stable operation of gas‐turbine generator, the torsional torque suppression as well as power system stabilization should be considered. In this paper, the control strategy that achieves torsional torque suppression and power system stabilization is presented based on H control theory. The effectiveness of the proposed control system is validated by numerical simulation results. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Because of highly increasing energy consumption, environmental issues and lack of common energy sources, the use of renewable energy sources especially wind power generation technology is increasing with significant growth in the world. But due to the variable nature of these sources, new challenges have been created in the balance between production and consumption of power system. The hydrogen energy storage (HES) system by storing excess wind power through the technology of power to hydrogen (P2H) and delivering it to the electricity network through hydrogen-based gas turbine at the required hours reduces not only wind alternation but can play an important role in balancing power production and consumption. On the other hand, power consumers by participating in demand response (DR) programs can reduce their consumption at peak load or wind power shortage hours, and increase their consumption at low-load or excess wind power hours to reduce wind power spillage and system energy cost. This paper proposes a stochastic security constrained unit commitment (SCUC) with wind energy considering coordinated operation of price-based DR and HES system. Price-based DR has been formulated as a price responsive shiftable demand bidding mechanism. The proposed model has been tested on modified 6-bus and 24-bus systems. The numerical results show the effect of simultaneous consideration of HES system and price-based DR integrated with wind energy on hourly generation scheduling of thermal units. As a result there is some reduction in wind generation power spillage and daily operation cost.  相似文献

The authors describe the interactive package ASP (Autonomous System Planning), which determines the optimal expansion plan of an autonomous generation system including diesel units, wind generators, and photovoltaic generators. Utilizing meteorological data, load demand data and estimated economical parameters, the package finds the optimal system expansion policy for a period of N years. The solution algorithms implemented in the package recognize planning and operational constraints and take into consideration the stochastic nature of the meteorological conditions, loads, and the availability of the diesel units  相似文献

Hourly mean wind-speed data for the period 1986–1997 [except the years 1989 (some data is missing) and 1991 (Gulf War)] recorded at the solar radiation and meteorological monitoring station, Dhahran (26°C 32′ N, 50° 13′ E), Saudi Arabia, have been analyzed to investigate the optimum size of battery storage capacity for hybrid (wind+diesel) energy conversion systems at Dhahran. The monthly average wind speeds for Dhahran range from 4.12 to 6.42 m/s. As a case study, the hybrid system considered in the present analysis consists of two 10 kW Wind Energy Conversion Systems (WECS), together with a battery storage system and a diesel back-up. The yearly and monthly average energy generated from the above hybrid system have been presented. More importantly, the study explores the impact of variation of battery storage capacity on hybrid power generation. The results exhibit a trade-off between size of the storage capacity and diesel power to be generated to cope with specific annual load distribution [41,500], and for given energy generation from WECS. The energy to be generated from the back-up diesel generator and the number of operational hours of the diesel system to meet a specific annual electrical energy demand have also been presented. The diesel back-up system is operated at times when the power generated from WECS fails to satisfy the load and when the battery storage is depleted. The present study shows that for economic considerations, for optimum use of battery storage and for optimum operation of diesel system, storage capacity equivalent to one to three days of maximum monthly average daily demand needs to be used. It has been found that the diesel energy to be generated without any storage is considerably high; however, use of one day of battery storage reduces diesel energy generation by about 35%; also the number of hours of operation of the diesel system are reduced by about 52%.  相似文献

Electrification to rural and remote areas with limited or no access to grid connection is one of the most challenging issues in developing countries like Colombia. Due to the recent concerns about the global climatic change and diminishing fuel prices, searching for reliable, environmental friendly and renewable energy sources to satisfy the rising electrical energy demand has become vital. This study aims at analyzing the application of photovoltaic (PV) panels, wind turbines and diesel generators in a stand-alone hybrid power generation system for rural electrification in three off-grid villages in Colombia with different climatic characteristics. The areas have been selected according to the “Colombia’s development plan 2011–2030 for non-conventional sources of energy”. First, different combinations of wind turbine, PV, and diesel generator are modeled and optimized to determine the most energy-efficient and cost-effective configuration for each location. HOMER software has been used to perform a techno-economic feasibility of the proposed hybrid systems, taking into account net present cost, initial capital cost, and cost of energy as economic indicators.  相似文献
