Suggests that R. W. Russell (see record 1985-21215-001) provides examples of how linguistic and semantic factors (particularly the dominance of English as a universal language in psychology) limits psychology's potential development as an international discipline. Data that describe the linguistic characteristics of the Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology, International Journal of Psychology, International Journal of Intercultural Relations, and the Interamerican Journal of Psychology indicate that articles written in languages other than English (and their authors) are virtually excluded from the international communication process. A concern with international cooperation in psychology has been present since the beginnings of psychology as a science. In this article, the author traces the development of international cooperation from the late 19th century to the present day to document the interesting ways in which the forms of collaboration have always been related to the large social and political contexts of which they are a part. This historical material is followed by an autobiographical account of the author's own involvement in cooperative international research to illustrate how such activity can play out. A few selected collaborative enterprises are then described to emphasize the point that psychology stands to benefit enormously from continued international cooperation, especially in times of international conflict such as that being experienced at the present time. There are several reasons for teaching psychology courses in international relations: (a) psychology has something new to add to the numerous courses in international relations now being taught. (b) There is now enough significant material to make a full semester course worthwhile. (c) Teaching about war and peace can lead to some interesting research. Major sections are: Psychological Approach to International Relations, Course Material, Research Potential, Organizing Course, and Student Research. The author reports his experiences in teaching this kind of course. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

This article reports on the Award for Distinguished Contributions to the International Advancement of Psychology, which is given by the Committee on International Relations in Psychology to an individual who has made sustained and enduring contributions to international cooperation and the advancement of knowledge in psychology. This year's winner is Mark R. Rosenzweig, who has been one of the most influential agents for the advancement of international psychology, and whose innovative research activities have very often involved international collaboration. A citation, biography, and selected bibliography of Rosenzweig's work are presented. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2011 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

International school psychology is discussed in reference to scholarly and professional development within psychology, the emergence of an international association of school psychology, its efforts to promote school psychology, prevailing characteristics of school psychologists, and additional efforts needed to further enhance its development. Nine issues that will help shape the future of international school psychology are also identified. The importance of psychology, including school psychology, in promoting children's needs and rights is underscored. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Reviews the book, Development in work and organizational psychology: Implications for international business edited by Paul Jackson and Manfusa Shams (2006). This book is part of the Elsevier International Business and Management Series. Jackson and Shams state that the objective of this book is to "give authoritative accounts" of developments within work and organisational psychology for students and practitioners of international business. The editors emphasise that this book or any edited book cannot be a comprehensive work on all of the areas in organisational psychology, so they selected leading scholars from the United Kingdom and North America and invited these researchers to select a topic in their area of expertise. From this "reflective practitioner's perspective," the volume becomes a miscellany of chapters, some of which international business scholars would not consider to be international business. The main topics in international business (IB) include such things as international trade, foreign direct investment, global monetary system, international strategy, importing and exporting, global manufacturing and operations management, international marketing, global or international human resources management, international accounting, international finance, the international environment, economic and socioeconomic and sociocultural forces, and political and legal environment. "The question of reciprocal influences was considered in terms of the number and distribution of psychologists throughout the world… . It was quickly conceded that, at present, influences in international psychology are not reciprocal and, perhaps, cannot be for some time to come. This problem is complicated not only by the sheer preponderance and resources of American psychology, but also by a general tendency to ignore attainments abroad, unless conveniently published in readily available English-language journals." Psychology "is an international science, to which psychologists everywhere can and do contribute… . We share a common enterprise with common goals and aspirations." Reviews the book, Personality theory and research: An international perspective by Gordon L. Flett (2007). On the whole, this is an excellent textbook. It provides a balance between discussion of theory and research, both contemporary and historical, from an international and cross-cultural perspective. It makes a special effort to highlight research contributions made by researchers in Canada and countries other than the United States. The book also emphasises the science underlying personality psychology and acknowledges the practical aspects of personality theory and research. This textbook contains 14 chapters, which are well-written, focus on interesting empirical and real-world examples, and include sections that should facilitate student comprehension. This textbook provides a good introduction to personality theory and research. It makes a convincing argument that personality matters. Comments on the original article, "U.S. psychology and world psychology," by M. R. Rosenzweig (see record 1986-10248-001). Rosenzweig chastised U.S. psychologists for their neglect of psychology abroad and helpfully mentioned SHARE as one of the ways in which individuals can participate in international psychology. He recommended that psychologists volunteer to host international visitors through their own institutions or through SHARE. The current author, SHARE chairperson from 1973 to 1984, notes that SHARE cordially seconds Rosenzweig's suggestion. Psychologists may register with SHARE as hosts, travelers, or both. SHARE is currently co-sponsored and financed by 10 international and national psychological organizations, including 5 divisions of APA. There are no fees to participants. Participation as a host or guest is available to members in good standing of a sponsor group. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Clinical psychology, in common with its sister sciences, knows no national boundaries. Current journals, texts, and international congresses reflect steadily expanding horizons of scientific and professional interests that effectively transcend geographical, linguistic, and ideological barriers. These very brief, nontechnical observations of clinical psychology abroad will be limited to some recent trends noted in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe, including the Soviet Union. The observations are based, in varying degree, on a cursory survey of recent publications, informal correspondence, and fleeting conversations during the Brussels International Congress and other travels abroad. No claims are made for complete accuracy or all-inclusiveness; a process of "selective perception" may be assumed, both here and in earlier comments. International graduate students experience a number of unique challenges as they transition through their training programs. Surprisingly, relatively little research has been conducted on perhaps one of the most crucial predictors of international students’ retention and success within their graduate programs: the advising relationship. Using a total of 367 diverse students who responded to a universitywide survey of international students, the authors were able to use quantitative and qualitative analyses to (a) support the adequacy of the Advisory Working Alliance Inventory (L. Z. Schlosser & C. J. Gelso, 2001) for measuring alliance factors in advising relationships for international students; (b) show that some ratings of alliance were lower than a comparison group of U.S. domestic students; (c) determine that alliance ratings had minimal association with grade point average, gender, or college-level area of study, but were substantially associated with advising satisfaction and desire to change advisors; and (d) reveal themes in advising experiences reflecting constructive and destructive advising experiences. The social justice and future implications of the results are consistent with many historical and contemporary emphases in counseling psychology. In 1964, the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues (SPSSI) Committee on International Relations conducted a survey to establish the present extent of teaching in the psychology of international relations and the possibilities for its expansion. A questionnaire was mailed to the chairmen of the 194 psychology departments with graduate programs, and to a random sample of 41 departments with only undergraduate programs. Returns were received from 74% of the former and 54% of the latter departments. 75 of the 144 graduate departments and 8 of the 22 undergraduate departments sampled would appear interested in teaching material bearing on the psychological aspects of international relations. The SPSSI Committee on International Relations will, therefore, attempt to obtain support for a fellowship program designed to provide instruction in political science, a review of pertinent psychological material, and the opportunity to develop a course on the psychological aspects of international relations. This Special Issue contains the commentary and evaluations of more than a dozen authors on the merits of Canadian Code of Ethics for Psychologists. The papers examine the Code from a range of perspectives: history of psychology; philosophy of science; teaching; practice; regulation; law; and, applications beyond psychology. Perspectives of the international community of psychologists also are included. The usefulness to the public interest of placing ethical standards within a clearly defined ethical framework is affirmed by many of the authors. In addition, the articles conclude that the organization of the Code around ethical principles and the inclusion of steps for ethical decision making are invaluable in teaching and practice, especially for new or ambiguous areas. The ethical principles and decision-making steps are found to be as applicable to research as to service organizations. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Presents reflections on the life and achievements of Josef Maria Bro?ek. The author notes that, in his way, Bro?ek turned psychology historiography into an international domain involving, in this construction, researchers from countries not only of Anglo Saxon languages but also those of Slavic and Latin languages, including Brazil. Quoting from Braque, he affirmed that "knowledge of the past enables the revelation of the present." However, he believed that "reality is not revealed if it is not sparkled by a poetic beam." The poetry of life illuminated Bro?ek and his actions. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

This article offers the author's observations on American psychologists presenting papers in foreign countries. He points out that psychology in the US has a different viewpoint, dealing with precisely defined variables, while psychology abroad deals with broad categories based on philosophic considerations. Although the program committees that select papers for international conventions are in many instances composed of foreign psychologists, usually such papers are chosen by abstracts, and the committee does not know the intimate details of the paper. The author stresses that American psychologists should know that the goals of the audience are just as important as their own, and by delivering talks that fit in with their own standards and not those of the audience, they are defeating their own purpose. Comments on an article by J. J. Arnett (see record 2008-14338-003) regarding the assertion that American psychology focuses too narrowly on Americans while neglecting the other 95% of the world’s population. The authors argue that while Arnett’s assessment was poignant, and his call for a more inclusive, international, and cross-cultural representation in American psychology was timely and admirable; they present data that show substantial progress has been made over the last 30 years, and we conclude that major APA journals are already becoming representative of the world’s research psychologists in some respects.
