This paper investigates the interfacial, tensile, and fatigue properties of a novel smart fiber‐metal laminate (FML) based on a nickel‐titanium (Ni‐Ti) shape memory alloy and a woven glass fiber reinforced epoxy. Initial tests, using the single cantilever beam (SCB) geometry, have shown that this unique system offers high values of metal‐composite interfacial fracture toughness. Tensile tests have shown that the mechanical properties of these FMLs lie between those offered by its constituent materials and that their tensile modulus and strength can be easily predicted using a rule of mixtures approach. Tension‐tension fatigue tests have shown that the fatigue performance of notched smart FMLs is superior to that offered by the plain Ni‐Ti alloy. A subsequent optical examination of unnotched laminates tested to failure under tension‐tension fatigue loading has shown that the fracture mechanisms occurring within the Ni‐Ti FMLs are strongly dependent on the applied cyclic stress. The overall mechanical performance of glass–carbon hybrid fibers reinforced epoxy composites depends heavily upon fiber–matrix interfacial properties and the service temperatures. Fiber‐bundle pull‐out tests of glass (GF) and/or carbon fiber (CF) reinforced epoxy composites were carried out at room and elevated temperatures. Graphene nanoplatelets were added in the interfacial region to investigate their influence on the interfacial shear strength (IFSS). Results show that IFSS of specimens with fiber‐bundle number ratio of GF:CF = 1:2 is the largest among the hybrid composites, and a positive hybridization effect is found at elevated temperatures. IFSS of all the specimens decreases with the increasing of test temperatures, while the toughness shows a contrary tendency. As verified by scanning electron microscopy observations, graphene nanoplatelets on fiber surface could enhance the IFSS of pure glass/carbon and hybrid fibers reinforced epoxy composites at higher temperatures significantly. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article investigates the activation characteristics of a novel fiber‐metal laminate (FML) based on a nickel–titanium (Ni–Ti) shape memory alloy. Initial attention focuses on manufacturing this smart FML in which a woven glass fiber reinforced epoxy material is sandwiched between two shape memory alloy (SMA) outer skins. Activation tests on cantilever beams using a hot air gun have shown that the FMLs exhibits a distinct actuation capability in which beam rotations of up to 11° were recorded. An examination of the edges of polished samples indicated that no damage was incurred by the FML during the activation process. The functionality of the FMLs was enhanced through the introduction of embedded electrical resistance wires located between the composite and metal plies. Here, the embedded electrical wires were heated by passing an electric current through them, thereby activating the SMA plies in a more effective and controllable manner. As before, significant beam tip rotations were recorded in the FMLs in a relatively short time period. Finally, polymer‐based optical fiber (POF) and fiber‐bragg grating (FBG) sensors were introduced into the FMLs in order to monitor their deflection during the activation process. The results of these tests showed that such sensing elements can be successfully employed to monitor the actuation response of these layered laminates. POLYM. Three types of surface modifiers, N‐β‐aminoethyl‐γ‐aminopropyltrimethoxysilane coupling agent (SGS), a mixture of silane and rare earth elements (SGS/RES), and rare earth elements surface modifier (RES), were used to treat the glass fiber surface. Tensile tests of glass fiber–reinforced polytetrafluoroethylene (GF/PTFE) composites with different surface treatment conditions, surface modifiers, and glass fiber content were carried out. Finally, the fracture surface morphologies of GF/PTFE composites were investigated using scanning electron microscopy. Experimental results show that the tensile properties of the treated GF/PTFE composite increased compared with those of the untreated one. RES is superior to SGS/RES and SGS modifiers in promoting interfacial adhesion between the glass fiber and PTFE because of the effects of rare earth elements on the compatibility. Meanwhile, the optimum contents of rare earth elements for the improvement of the tensile properties of GF/PTFE composite were obtained for RES and SGS/RES modifiers. The interfacial adhesion of the GF/PTFE composites treated with RES or SGS/RES modifiers was mainly controlled by the contents of rare earth elements. The tensile properties of the GF/PTFE composites improved considerably when the content of rare earth elements in surface modifiers was 0.2–0.4 wt %, and the optimum tensile performance of GF/PTFE composites was obtained at 0.3 wt % RE content. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The conductive polyamide 66 (PA66)/carbon nanotube (CNT) composites reinforced with glass fiber‐multiwall CNT (GF‐MWCNT) hybrids were prepared by melt mixing. Electrostactic adsorption was utilized for the deposition of MWCNTs on the surfaces of glass fibers (GFs) to construct hybrid reinforcement with high‐electrical conductivity. The fabricated PA66/CNT composites reinforced with GF‐MWCNT hybrids showed enhanced electrical conductivity and mechanical properties as compared to those of PA66/CNT or PA66/GF/CNT composites. A significant reduction in percolation threshold was found for PA66/GF‐MWCNT/CNT composite (only 0.70 vol%). The morphological investigation demonstrated that MWCNT coating on the surfaces of the GFs improved load transfer between the GFs and the matrix. The presence of MWCNTs in the matrix‐rich interfacial regions enhanced the tensile modulus of the composite by about 10% than that of PA66/GF/CNT composite at the same CNT loading, which shows a promising route to build up high‐performance conductive composites. The mechanical and fracture properties of injection molded short glass fiber)/short carbon fiber reinforced polyamide 6 (PA 6) hybrid composites were studied. The short fiber composites of PA 6 glass fiber, carbon fiber, and the hybrid blend were injection molded using a conventional machine whereas the two types of sandwich skin–core hybrids were coinjection molded. The fiber volume fraction for all formulations was fixed at 0.07. The overall composite density, volume, and weight fraction for each formulation was calculated after composite pyrolysis in a furnace at 600°C under nitrogen atmosphere. The tensile, flexural, and single‐edge notch‐bending tests were performed on all formulations. Microstructural characterizations involved the determination of thermal properties, skin–core thickness, and fiber length distributions. The carbon fiber/PA 6 (CF/PA 6) formulation exhibits the highest values for most tests. The sandwich skin‐core hybrid composites exhibit values lower than the CF/PA 6 and hybrid composite blends for the mechanical and fracture tests. The behaviors of all composite formulations are explained in terms of mechanical and fracture properties and its proportion to the composite strength, fiber orientation, interfacial bonding between fibers and matrix, nucleating ability of carbon fibers, and the effects of the skin and core structures. Failure mechanisms of both the matrix and the composites, assessed by fractographic studies in a scanning electron microscope, are discussed. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The present research program has studied the fracture properties of a Fiber‐Metal Laminate (FML) system constituted by aluminum alloy and a high‐impact self‐reinforced composite material. Here, the self‐reinforced composite system consists of a polypropylene matrix reinforced with polypropylene fibers. Initial testing has shown that a though adhesion can be achieved between the aluminum layers and the composite material by incorporating a thermoplastic adhesive interlayer at the common interface. The adhesion at the metal–composite interface has been studied under a wide range of strain rate conditions using a Single Cantilever Beam test geometry, and it has been shown that the interfacial fracture toughness is loading rate sensitive. Interlaminar delamination tests of the plain composite have also been studied and it was shown that their fracture toughness is also loading rate sensitive. Additional tensile tests have shown that the tensile strength and moduli of the FMLs are linearly influenced by the volume fraction of their constituent materials as well as are successfully predicted using a simple rule of mixture. Low velocity impact tests have also shown that the FMLs based on a self‐reinforced polypropylene composite yielded specific perforation energies well above the 30 J m2/kg. It was also shown that by increasing the number of metal and composite plies in the FMLs, resulted in hybrid structures capable of absorbing higher specific low velocity impact energies. POLYM. Among the synthetic fibers, glass fibers (GF) are most widely used in thermoplastic short‐fiber‐reinforced polymers (SFRP), as they offer good strength and stiffness, impact resistance, chemical resistance, and thermal stability at a low price. Carbon fibers (CF) are applied instead of GF, when highest stiffness is required. Other types of synthetic fibers like aramid (AF), basalt (BF), polyacrylonitrile (PAN‐F), polyethylene terephthalate (PET‐F), or polypropylene fibers (PP‐F) are rarely used in SFRP, although they offer some advantages compared with GF. The aim of this article is, to give an overview of various fiber types with regard to their mechanical properties, densities, and prices as well as the performance of their thermoplastic composites. The mechanical properties are presented as Ashby plots of tensile strength versus tensile modulus, both in absolute and specific (absolute value divided by density) values. This overview also focuses on modification of fiber/matrix interaction, as interfacial adhesion has a huge impact on composite performance. A summary of established methods for characterization of fibers, polymers, and composites completes this article. POLYM. COMPOS., 35:227–236, 2014. © 2013 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

The effect of crystallinity differences induced by mold wall temperature and annealing on mechanical behavior is evaluated for poly(etheretherketone) (PEEK) resin and its composites. The systems investigated were neat PEEK, glass fiber (GF) reinforced PEEK, and carbon fiber (CF) reinforced PEEK. Both composite systems were reinforced with 10, 20, and 30 wt% fiber. The degree of crystallinity (Xc) of PEEK was found to increase by processing at higher mold temperatures, by annealing, and by fiber length reductions, which appears to indicate the ability of short fibers to nucleate the crystallization of PEEK under favorable thermal conditions. Improvements in Young's modulus and strength together with ductility reductions are generally obtained as crystallinity increases in both neat PEEK and its composites. The contribution of crystallinity to mechanical behavior is significant only for neat PEEK and PEEK reinforced by 10% fiber. SEM micrographs reveal that this is due to a change in failure mode. When PEEK is reinforced by carbon fibers or by 20–30% glass fibers, a macroscopic brittle mode of failure is observed irrespective of matrix crystallinity, and mechanical behavior is principally determined by the nature and content of the reinforcing fibers.  相似文献

Four kinds of polyaniline (PANI)‐coated glass fibers (GF–PANI) combined with bulk PANI particles were synthesized. GF–PANI fillers containing different PANI contents were incorporated into an epoxy–anhydride system. The best conductivity behavior of the epoxy/GF–PANI composites was obtained with a GF–PANI filler containing 80% PANI. Such a composite shows the lowest percolation threshold at about 20% GF–PANI or 16% PANI (glass fiber‐free basis). The PANI‐coated glass fibers act as conductive bridges, interconnecting PANI particles in the epoxy matrix, thus contributing to the improvement of the conductivity of the composite and the lower percolation threshold, compared with that of a epoxy/PANI–powder composite. Particularly, the presence of glass fibers significantly improves the mechanical properties, for example, the modulus and strength of the conductive epoxy composites. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effect of heat flux levels on burning behavior and heat transmission properties of hybrid fabrics and composites has been investigated using cone calorimeter and heat transmission techniques. The hybrid fabric structures woven out of E‐glass (warp) and polyether ether ketone (PEEK) (weft) and E‐glass (warp) and polyester (weft) have been studied at high heat flux levels keeping in view the flame retardant requirements of structural composites. The performance of the glass–PEEK fabric even at high heat flux levels of 75 kW/m2 was comparable with the performance of glass–polyester fabric evaluated at 50 kW/m2. The results further demonstrate that glass–PEEK hybrid fabrics exhibit low peak heat release rate, low heat release rate, low heat of combustion, suggesting an excellent combination of materials and fall under the low‐risk category and are comparable with the performance of carbon fiber‐epoxy‐based systems. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The concept of skin‐core (SC) morphology was used to make sandwich hybrid composites in which the skin and core were composed of different fibers in the same matrix. The sandwich blends comprising glass skin with carbon core and vice versa were compared with those of the hybrid composite, while the respective carbon (CF) and glass fiber (GF) composites served as points of reference. The composites were compounded and fabricated into injection molded tensile specimens and 3‐mm thick plaques. The effect of ambient temperature and moisture was studied. The fracture mechanical characterization of the various materials was done by using notched compact tension (CT) specimens. Tensile properties were also used to characterize the composites. Morphogical studies based on scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy were used to elucidate fracture characteristics. Deterioration of properties was noticed under hot and humid conditions. Synergism in flexural properties was observed in the CF/GF/PA hybrid composite. The mechanical properties of the CF/GF/PA hybrid are closer to those of CF/PA, suggesting a cost advantage by substituting half of the carbon fibers with glass fibers. Dynamic mechanical analysis results revealed that synergism in Tg is attained by blending or sandwiching glass and carbon fibers. Morphological studies reaffirmed the skin‐core morphology of the composites. POLYM. COMPOS., 26:52–59, 2005. © 2004 Society of Plastics Engineers.  相似文献

Two kinds of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) coatings were used for the modification of the interface in carbon fiber (CF) reinforced polyarylacetylene (PAA) matrix composites. The effects of the organic–inorganic hybrid POSS coatings on the properties of the composites were studied with short‐beam‐bending, microdebonding, and impact tests. The interlaminar shear strength and interfacial shear strength showed that the POSS coatings resulted in an interfacial property improvement for the CF/PAA composites in comparison with the untreated ones. The impact‐test results implied that the impact properties of the POSS‐coating‐treated composites were improved. The stiffness of the interface created by the POSS coatings was larger than that of the fiber and matrix in the CF/PAA composites according to the force‐modulation‐mode atomic force microscopy test results. The rigid POSS interlayer in the composites enhanced the interfacial mechanical properties with a simultaneous improvement of the impact properties; this was an interesting phenomenon in the composite‐interface modification. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, glass fibers were modified using γ‐glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane of different concentrations to improve the interfacial adhesion at interfaces between fibers and matrix. Effects of γ‐glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane on mechanical properties and fracture behavior of glass fiber/epoxy composites were investigated experimentally. Mechanical properties of the composites have been investigated by tensile tests, short beam tests, and flexural tests. The short‐beam method was used to measure the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of laminates. The tensile and flexural properties of composites were characterized by tensile and three‐point bending tests, respectively. The fracture surfaces of the composites were observed with a scanning electron microscope. On comparing the results obtained for the different concentrations of silane solution, it was found that the 0.5% GPS silane treatment provided the best mechanical properties. The ILSS value of heat‐cleaned glass fiber reinforced composite is enhanced by ∼59% as a result of the glass fiber treatment with 0.5% γ‐GPS. Also, an improvement of about 37% in tensile strength, about 78% in flexural strength of the composite with the 0.5% γ‐GPS treatment of glass fibers was observed. POLYM. The high velocity impact response of a range of fiber–metal laminates (FMLs) based on a woven glass fiber reinforced polypropylene and an aluminum alloy has been investigated. Tests on FMLs, based on 2024‐O and 2024‐T3 aluminum alloys, were undertaken using a nitrogen gas gun at velocities up to 150 m/s. The failure processes in the FMLs were investigated by examining the samples after impact and by sectioning a number of specimens through the point of impact. The impact response of these multilayered samples was also characterized by measuring the residual out‐of‐plane displacement of the targets after testing. Energy absorption in the FMLs occurred through gross plastic deformation, membrane stretching and tearing in the aluminum plies, as well as delamination, fiber fracture, and matrix cracking in the composite layers. In the multilayered FMLs, the permanent displacement at the perforation threshold remained roughly constant over a range of target configurations, suggesting that the aluminum layers deform almost independently through a membrane stretching mechanism during the perforation process. The impact resistances of the laminates investigated were compared by determining their specific perforation energies (s.p.e.), where it was shown that s.p.e. of several of laminates was almost three times that of the corresponding aluminum alloy. The perforation resistances of the FMLs as well as those of the plain composite were predicted using the Reid–Wen perforation model. Here good agreement was noted between the model and the experimental data for the range of laminates investigated here. POLYM. COMPOS. 27:700–708, 2006. © 2006 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

The purpose of this study is to increase of the flammability properties of the glass fiber (GF)–reinforced poly (lactic acid)/polycarbonate (PLA/PC) composites. Ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and triphenyl phosphate (TPP) were used as flame retardants that are including the organic phosphor to increase flame retardancy of GF‐reinforced composites. APP, TPP, and APP‐TPP mixture flame retardant including composites were prepared by using extrusion and injection molding methods. The properties of the composites were determined by the tensile test, limiting oxygen index (LOI), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and heat release rate (HRR) test. The minimum Tg value was observed for the TPP including PLA/PC composites in DSC analysis. The highest tensile strength was observed in GF‐reinforced PLA/PC composites. In the LOI test, GF including composite was burned with the lowest concentration of oxygen, and burning time was the longest of this composite. However, the shortest burning time was obtained by using the mixture flame retardant system. The flame retardancy properties of GF‐reinforced PLA/PC composite was improved by using mixture flame retardant. When analyzed the results of HRR, time to ignition (TTI), and mass loss rate together, the best value was obtained for the composite including APP.  相似文献
