This article responds to the Eby et al. (this issue, pp. 57–68) paper on issues and dilemmas for the future of training for psychology practice. The author addresses these issues and discusses them in regards to our identity as psychologists and changes in training needed in light of the recent passage of federal health care reform legislation. The changes in health care include the importance of training to work in integrated health care systems, primary care, using electronic health records, and dealing with health disparities. The rationale for, and the manner in which, mental health services are provided in 1971 differs significantly from the patterns of a decade ago. The perspective and activities have expanded from the isolated clinic to the more encompassing community mental health program. During the 1970's psychologists will be challenged to evolve the scope even further by designing far-flung human service systems which seek to provide comprehensive and coordinated assistance to clients. 4 prominent alternative program structures are arising at the community level: information and referral centers, diagnostic centers, multiservice centers, and human services networks. It is predicted that psychologists may well be required to redesign their (a) practice, by developing job roles in nonpsychiatric settings; (b) research, by increased use of the ecological model for the resolution of pressing social problems; and (c) training, by expanded use of multidisciplinary settings offering broadly defined rather than narrowly circumscribed work experiences. Conducted a survey of directors of programs in clinical psychology that were approved by the American Psychological Association. Data from the 65 responding programs reveal that a substantial number of programs offered formal training in clinical psychophysiology. 69% of the respondents indicated that they currently provide training in clinical psychophysiology, while an additional 17% reported a desire to develop such training in the future. Details are provided regarding (a) types of training available; (b) current and desired content areas covered; and (c) ratings indicating interest, utility, and potential of biofeedback, psychophysiological assessment, and psychophysiological monitoring in therapy. It is concluded that the increased training in clinical psychophysiology is part of a broader trend reflecting the growing interest in the psychobiological foundation of human behavior and its implications for clinical psychology and medicine. Although this trend can be viewed as positive, the current state of research warrants that clinical psychophysiology and the emerging field of behavioral medicine not move too quickly with overoptimistic expectations. Do many Spanish human service practitioners suffer from burnout? What coping strategies are used to combat work stress, and are they associated with lower burnout? Which strategies may the psychologist promote to improve organizations? With an eye toward helping organizations improve their workers' quality of work life and service delivery, 211 professionals, either child protection workers or in-home caregivers, completed an inventory on coping and another on burnout. Coping strategies alone do not preclude burnout but may help prevent worker turnover. High job and salary satisfaction, together with active coping strategies play an important role in promoting personal accomplishment. Low job and salary satisfaction and the use of passive or emotional strategies predict elevated emotional exhaustion. The results suggest some possible points of intervention. An organizational change consultation was conducted with a large nonprofit human service organization. The consultation began with negotiations to gain entry to the agency followed by start-up activities at all levels of the organization. Seventy-two individual interviews were conducted. Interviews surfaced issues and concerns related to the climate, management, and operations of the agency and its eight programs. The mirroring (feedback) activity brought attention to the most critical issues in the organization for which action plans were developed and implemented. Employee follow-up survey results indicate favorable ratings for most action items. Lessons learned in the SHARE (pseudonym) consultation are presented for consideration by consultants working in human service and other organization settings. There has been significant recent progress in our understanding of human mate choice. We outline several frontiers of rapid cultural change which may increasingly directly affect individual self-evaluation in the mating market, formation and maintenance of long-term partnerships, and potentially reproductive outcome and child health. Specifically, we review evidence for the effects of (1) increasing exposure to mass media, (2) the advent of novel ways to meet potential partners, and (3) cultural influences which may disrupt or alter the expression of evolved mate preferences. We comment on the potential for these effects to influence self-perception and partner-perception, with downstream effects on relationship satisfaction and stability. A common theme emerges, which is that these effects may contribute to relationship dissatisfaction and dissolution, with negative implications for societal change. We then address how we envisage evolutionary psychology research may focus on and offer informed approaches to ameliorate these effects in the future. We picture the development of a field of applied evolutionary psychology, and we suggest that this will increasingly become a central focus for many researchers. Describes a 5-session training program for 6 directors (mean age 44.8 yrs) of school psychological services intended to prepare the Ss for organizational behavior management projects to be implemented in their school districts. After the initial training, Ss met monthly to discuss the projects and receive positive social reinforcement. During training sessions, Ss learned to pinpoint and record problems of organizational behavior and performance, design and implement organization intervention programs, link desired program behaviors with particular consequences, and evaluate intervention effectiveness. The study examined the social, personality, and cognitive correlates of self-reported future planning and the relationship of future planning to perceived control and life satisfaction. Using 2 probability samples of adults ages 25–74 (n1?=?2,971, n2?=?300) findings suggest, for Study 1, that education, income, social support, predictability, Conscientiousness, and Openness to Experience were positively related to future planning, whereas Neuroticism and Agreeableness were negatively related. Men were more future oriented; as age increased, future planning decreased. Study 2 replicated the findings with the exception of age, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism. For both studies, results supported a model in which the effects of future planning on life satisfaction were mediated by sense of control. A Planning?×?Age interaction for Study 1 indicated that although self-reported future planning decreased with age, the positive effects of future-oriented planning strategies on life satisfaction were most pronounced for the older adults, and this relationship was also mediated by control beliefs. The authors report on innovative approaches to the organization of health services and the delivery of patient care in 19 U.S. hospitals and hospital networks. For a sample of 29 dealers, ratings on 15 aspects of service station management were reduced to a single over-all rating that was used as a criterion against which a personal history blank was item analyzed using a variant of double cross validation. The scoring key was then cross-validated on a new sample of 23 dealers. It was concluded that the unitary criterion was adequate to describe performance, and that 14 of the 39 items in the blank discriminated more successful dealers from less successful, retaining validity on cross-validation.
