To study the dynamic performance of a polarizationmode-dispersion compensator (PMDC), a continuous PMD model and a dynamic PMDC model are presented. The continuous PMD model generates continuous PMD and state of polarization (SOP) variations. The statistics of the SOP variation generated by the continuous PMD model follows the Rayleigh distribution, and the SOP variation amplitude scales with the square root of sampling-time interval. The results are compared with those of a numerical and a commercial polarization scrambler, and the difference of the SOP variation characteristics between the PMD model and the polarization scramblers is explained. The continuous PMD model and the dynamic PMDC model are used to study the dynamic performance and speed requirement of a two-stage PMDC. The speed requirement of the PMDC is quantified in the SOP variation in one PMDC loop cycle. The authors found that when the SOP variation is within 3deg in one PMDC loop cycle, the dynamic PMD and SOP changes virtually does not cause any degradation in the PMDC performance 相似文献

Phase ripple impairments induced through cascaded fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) are discussed for 42.8-Gb/s transmission. We show the feasibility of transmission over 1140 km (12 times 95 km) using return-to-zero differential quadrature phase-shift keying modulation and FBG-only dispersion compensation. We further compare FBGs with dispersion-compensating fiber for dispersion compensation and analyze the influence of wavelength detuning. 相似文献

A bidirectional 80-km-reach 64-channel dense wavelength-division-multiplexing passive optical network with 50-GHz channel spacing based on wavelength-locked Fabry-Peacuterot laser diodes is demonstrated. By changing the position of the broadband light source (BLS) for the upstream channels to the remote node, both the need for a high-power BLS and the power penalties induced by backscattering are overcome. A 10-Gbit/s, 1.58-mu m, InGaAlAs electroabsorption modulator (EAM) integrated distributed-feedback (DFB) laser (EML) with a twin waveguide (TWG) structure is operated experimentally over a wide temperature range of 0 to 80degC. We introduce an InGaAlAs multi-quantum well (MQW) system for both LD and EAM MQWs, because this material has temperature-tolerant characteristics. These layers are grown using single step epitaxial growth, and the device was fabricated with a very simple process. Moreover, successful transmission through an 80-km single-mode fiber (SMF) was achieved with the device running at up to 80degC. These results confirm the suitability of this type of laser for use as a cost-effective and low-power consumption light source in 10-Gbit/s optical network systems. 相似文献

The singular integral equation technique has been used to analyze a shielded planar transmission line, which allows one to calculate the dispersion characteristics of shielded microstrips on two-layer substrates as well as the effect of shielding on coplanar waveguides. Dispersion curves for suspended substrate microstrips and the variation of the relative phase velocity, with frequency, of coplanar waveguide (CPW) on alumina substrates of finite thicknesses and variable ground plane positions are presented.
