An experimental and analytical study is conducted in order to investigate the flexural behavior of masonry beams that are internally reinforced using glass fiber-reinforced polymers (GFRP) rebars. Seven reinforced masonry beams with 4.0- and 2.4-m spans were tested under four-point bending setup. The beams were loaded monotonically up to failure. One had two courses of hollow concrete masonry units and the remaining six beams had three courses. Two masonry beams were reinforced using conventional steel rebars and were considered as the control specimens. The remaining five beams were internally reinforced using GFRP rods with different reinforcement ratios. Beams were detailed to have sufficient shear reinforcement such that they do not fail in shear. Flexural capacity, deformation, curvature, and strains of the tested GFRP-reinforced and steel-reinforced masonry beams were compared and discussed. Using the acquired data from the experimental and analytical studies, effectiveness of GFRP rods as internal reinforcement for concrete masonry beams is demonstrated.  相似文献

The research work reported here investigates the out-of-plane flexural behavior of masonry walls reinforced externally with glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) sheets and subjected to cyclic loading. A full-scale test program consisting of eight wall specimens was conducted. Nine tests were performed, in which three parameters were studied. These included the level of compressive axial load, amount of internal steel reinforcement, and amount of externally bonded GFRP sheet reinforcement. Of the three parameters studied, varying the amount of GFRP sheets was the only parameter that significantly affected the behavior of the walls. The GFRP sheet reinforcement governed the linear response of the bending moment versus centerline deflection hysteresis. Increasing or decreasing the amount of GFRP sheet reinforcement either increased or decreased both the wall stiffness and the ultimate strength, respectively. Except for visible cracks, the walls maintained their structural integrity throughout the out-of-plane cyclic loading. The unloading/reloading paths for successive loading cycles were similar, indicating little degradation. Thus, the general behavior of the walls was very predictable. The system, therefore, could be used to advantageously rehabilitate older masonry structures that are inadequately reinforced to withstand seismic events. A simple model of the behavior is also presented to allow for the evaluation of the strength and deformation characteristics of these elements.  相似文献

This paper investigates strengthening masonry walls using glass-fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) sheets. An experimental research program was undertaken. Both clay and concrete brick specimens were tested, with and without GFRP strengthening. Single-sided strengthening was considered, as it is often not practicable to apply the reinforcement to both sides of a wall. Static tests were carried out on six masonry panels, under a combination of vertical preload, and in-plane horizontal shear loading. The mechanisms by which load was carried were observed, varying from the initial, uncracked state, to the final, fully cracked state. The results demonstrate that a significant increase of the in-plane shear capacity of masonry can be achieved by bonding GFRP sheets to the surface of masonry walls. The experimental data were used to assess the effectiveness of the GFRP strengthening, and suggestions are made to allow the test results to be used in the design of sheet GFRP strengthening for masonry structures.  相似文献

Strengthening of Infill Masonry Walls with FRP Materials   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
This paper evaluates the effectiveness of different externally bonded glass fiber–reinforced polymer (GFRP) systems for increasing the out-of-plane resistance of infill masonry walls to loading. The research included a comprehensive experimental program comprising 14 full-scale specimens, including four unstrengthened (control) specimens and 10 strengthened specimens. To simulate the boundary conditions of infill walls, all specimens consisted of a reinforced concrete (RC) frame, simulating the supporting RC elements of a building superstructure, which was infilled with solid concrete brick masonry. The specimens were loaded out-of-plane using uniformly distributed pressure to simulate the differential (suction) pressure induced by a tornado. Parameters investigated in the experimental program included aspect ratio, FRP coverage ratio, number of masonry wythes, and type of FRP anchorage. Test results indicated that the type of FRP anchorage had a significant effect on the failure mode. Research findings concluded that GFRP strengthening of infill masonry walls is effective in increasing the out-of-plane load-carrying capacity when proper anchorage of the FRP laminate is provided.  相似文献

Precast/prestressed concrete sandwich panels consist of two concrete wythes separated by a rigid insulation foam layer and are generally used as walls or slabs in thermal insulation applications. Commonly used connectors between the two wythes, such as steel trusses or concrete stems, penetrate the insulation layer causing a thermal bridge effect, which reduces thermal efficiency. Glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) composite shell connectors between the two concrete wythes are used in this research as horizontal shear transfer reinforcement. The design criterion is to establish composite action, in which both wythes resist flexural loads as one unit, while maintaining insulation across the two concrete wythes of the panel. The experiments carried out in this research show that hybrid GFRP/steel reinforced sandwich panels can withstand out-of-plane loads while providing resistance to horizontal shear between the two concrete wythes. An analytical method is developed for modeling the horizontal shear transfer enhancement using a shear flow approach. In addition, a truss model is built, which predicts the panel deflections observed in the experiments with reasonable accuracy.  相似文献

The bond behavior of reinforcing bars in concrete is a critical issue in the design of reinforced concrete structures. This study focuses on the bond strength of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) rebars in normal strength concrete. Four different types of rebars were tested using the pullout method: aramid FRP (AFRP); carbon FRP (CFRP); glass FRP (GFRP), and steel. This involved a total of 151 specimens containing 6, 8, 10, 16, and 19?mm rebars embedded in a 203?mm concrete cube. The test embedment lengths were five, seven, and nine times the rebar diameter (db). For each rebar, the test results include the bond stress–slip response and the mode of failure. The test results showed that the bond strength of an FRP rebar is, on average, 40–100% the bond strength on a steel rebar for pullout failure mode. Based on this research, a proposal for the average bond strength of straight FRP rebars in normal strength concrete is made, which verifies an existing bond strength relationship (GFRP) and extends its application to AFRP and CFRP. It is an expression that is a function of the rebar diameter, and the concrete compressive strength.  相似文献

Continuous concrete beams are structural elements commonly used in structures that might be exposed to extreme weather conditions and the application of deicing salts, such as bridge overpasses and parking garages. In such structures, reinforcing continuous concrete beams with the noncorrodible fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) bars is beneficial to avoid steel corrosion. However, the linear-elastic behavior of FRP materials makes the ability of continuous beams to redistribute loads and moments questionable. A total of seven full-scale continuous concrete beams were tested to failure. Six beams were reinforced with glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) longitudinal bars, whereas one was reinforced with steel as control. The specimens have rectangular cross section of 200×300??mm and are continuous over two spans of 2,800?mm each. Both steel and GFRP stirrups were used as transverse reinforcement. The material, spacing, and amount of transverse reinforcement were the primary investigated parameters in this study. In addition, the experimental results were compared with the code equations to calculate the ultimate capacity. The experimental results showed that moment redistribution in FRP-reinforced continuous concrete beams is possible and is improved by increasing the amount of transverse reinforcement. Also, beams reinforced with GFRP stirrups illustrated similar performance compared with their steel-reinforced counterparts.  相似文献

Out-of-Plane Strengthening of Masonry Walls with Reinforced Composites   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
This paper presents an investigation into the effectiveness of using fiber-reinforced composite overlays to strengthen existing unreinforced masonry walls to resist out-of-plane static loads. A total of fifteen wall panels [1,200 × 1,800 × 200 mm (4 ft × 6 ft × 8 in.)] were tested. Twelve panels were assembled with fiber-reinforcing systems attached to the tension side, and the remaining three control walls were left without any external reinforcement. Two configurations of external reinforcement were evaluated. The first reinforcement configuration consisted of two layers of fiber-reinforced plastic webbing and the second consisted of vertical and horizontal bands of undirectional fiber composites. The three wall specimens without external reinforcement were tested to evaluate the change in the system strength and behavior with application of the external reinforcing systems. In addition to the two fiber configurations, the testing program also evaluated two methods of surface preparation of the walls, sand blasting, and wire brush. All specimens were thoroughly washed by water jet, 48 hours prior to application of the fiber-reinforcing systems. Three specimens were tested for each variable. A uniformly distributed lateral load was applied to each panel using the procedures described in the ASTM Standard E-72 Test Method (airbag). Failure loads, strains in the external reinforcement (FRP), out-of-plane deformations, and failure modes were recorded. Recommendations on the usefulness of the proposed technique as a means of strengthening masonry walls for out-of-plane loads are presented. In general, flexural strength of masonry walls can be increased if the shear failure is controlled.  相似文献

For decades, bridge slabs have been troubled by the corrosion of steel reinforcement. The unique corrosion resistance of glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars makes them a promising alternative to steel bars. Experiments have been conducted to investigate the bond performance of GFRP reinforced concrete under constant amplitude cyclic fatigue loading. Each specimen was an identical length beam with a single GFRP bar at the bottom, intended to simulate a transverse strip of a typical bridge deck slab. The crack growth was monitored for specimens of different widths, simulating different transverse reinforcement spacings. Up to 2?million?cycles of cyclic loads were applied at 100% typical service load levels. No fatigue failure was encountered in the testing. The effects of moderate overloads were also investigated.  相似文献

Six full-scale concrete masonry walls were tested under free-field blast loading using different charge sizes up to 250?kg of ammonium nitrate/fuel oil (ANFO) and at a constant stand-off distance of 15.0?m to cover a wide range of expected damage levels. Five walls were retrofitted with cold-formed steel studs anchored to the wall backs and were compared to the remaining as-built wall. Significant enhancement to the out-of-plane blast resistance of the retrofitted walls, compared to the as-built wall, was observed. This enhancement is attributed to the development of a tied-arch action in the retrofitted walls in which the masonry forms a compression strut while the steel studs serve as the tie. A simplified single-degree-of-freedom model was used to analyze the experimental results, and the model results agreed well with the observed damage levels and the resistances of the walls. In addition, the effectiveness of the proposed retrofit technique was evaluated in terms of strength enhancement and wall deflection reduction. The test results were also compared with those predicted by available blast damage assessment models for unreinforced masonry walls. However, it was found that available models, which do not account for the tied-arch mechanism, greatly underestimate the actual blast capacity of the retrofitted walls because of the assumption of a tensile flexural failure mode. Additionally, the proposed retrofit technique shifts the mode of failure from flexure to shear.  相似文献

Reinforcing concrete with a combination of steel and glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars promises favorable strength, serviceability, and durability. To verify its promise and to support design of concrete structures with this hybrid type of reinforcement, we have experimentally and theoretically investigated the load-deflection behavior of concrete beams reinforced with hybrid GFRP and steel bars. Eight beams, including two control beams reinforced with only steel or only GFRP bars, were tested. The amount of reinforcement and the ratio of GFRP to steel were the main parameters investigated. Hybrid GFRP/steel-reinforced concrete beams with normal effective reinforcement ratios exhibited good ductility, serviceability, and load carrying capacity. Comparisons between the experimental results and the predictions from theoretical analysis showed that the models we adopted could adequately predict the load carrying capacity, deflection, and crack width of hybrid GFRP/steel-reinforced concrete beams.  相似文献

The flexural performance of reinforced concrete-filled glass-fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) tubes (CFFTs) has been investigated using seven specimens, 220?mm in diameter and 2.43?m long. Specimens were reinforced with either steel, GFRP, or carbon–fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) rebar of various sizes. Prefabricated GFRP tubes with most of the fibers oriented in the hoop direction were used in five specimens. One control specimen included conventional steel spirals of stiffness comparable to the GFRP tube and the other had no transverse reinforcement. Test results have shown that CFFT beams performed substantially better than beams with a steel spiral. Unlike CFFTs with FRP rebar, CFFTs with steel rebar failed in a sequential progressive manner, leading to considerable ductility. An analytical model capable of predicting the full response of reinforced CFFT beams, including the sequential progressive failure, has been developed, verified, and used in a parametric study. It is shown that laminate structure of the tube affects the behavior, only after yielding of the steel rebar. Steel reinforcement ratio significantly affects stiffness and strength, whereas concrete strength has an insignificant effect on the overall performance.  相似文献

The Val-Alain Bridge, located in the Municipality of Val-Alain on Highway 20 East, crosses over Henri River in Québec, Canada. The bridge is a slab-on-girder type with a skew angle of 20° over a single span of 49.89?m and a total width of 12.57?m. The bridge has four simply supported steel girders spaced at 3,145?mm. The deck slab is a 225-mm-thick concrete slab, with semi-integral abutments, continuous over the steel girders with an overhang of 1,570?mm on each side. The concrete deck slab and the bridge barriers were reinforced with glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) reinforcing bars utilizing high-performance concrete. The Val-Alain Bridge is the Canada’s first concrete bridge deck totally reinforced with GFRP reinforcing bars. Using such nonmetallic reinforcement in combination with high-performance concrete leads to an expected service life of more than 75?years. The bridge is well instrumented with electrical resistance strain gauges and fiber-optic sensors at critical locations to record internal strain data. Also, the bridge was tested for service performance using calibrated truckloads. Design concepts, construction details, and results of the first series of live load field tests are presented.  相似文献

Collapse of unreinforced masonry (URM) walls is the cause of many casualties during extreme loading events. The objective of this current research was to investigate effective and practical approaches for strengthening URM block walls with openings to resist extreme out-of-plane loads. Five full-scale masonry block walls were constructed. The walls had different opening configurations such as a single center window, one window off center, two windows, a wide window and a door. The walls were tested when subjected to uniformly distributed lateral load up to failure. The walls were then strengthened using carbon fiber-reinforced polymer laminate strips and then retested. The walls were set up in a vertical test frame and were subjected to cyclic out-of-plane distributed pressure using an airbag. Failure of the unstrengthened URM block wall was along the mortar joints. In the strengthened walls, failure occurred in the mortar joints as well as in concrete blocks near the carbon strips. The lateral load carrying capacity of the strengthened walls was found to be significantly higher than that of the unstrengthened walls and had much more ductile performance.  相似文献

In this study, carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets were examined as a means to strengthening existing masonry walls allowing for efficient creation of doors, windows, and passage openings. The research reported here deals with eight masonry walls made with concrete blocks, subjected to three-point quasistatic loading. The parameters examined include the reinforcement configuration and their amount. While CFRP sheets were used as external reinforcement, companion studies were carried out with conventional steel rebars. Test results indicate an increase of 180% in shear strength of the reinforced walls as compared to reference unreinforced walls. Load-deflection relationships indicate that the combined plain masonry and CFRP laminate system possessed some nonlinear deformability. The use of CFRP laminates on the walls was found to have an influence on the mode of failure. Anchoring the CFRP laminates at both support regions helped in using a larger portion of the strength of the laminates. The reinforced walls exhibited diagonal shear cracks that developed at a much slower rate and were ultimately accompanied by the peeling off of the CFRP laminates.  相似文献

Continuous concrete beams are commonly used elements in structures such as parking garages and overpasses, which might be exposed to extreme weather conditions and the application of deicing salts. The use of the fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) bars having no expansive corrosion product in these types of structures has become a viable alternative to steel bars to overcome the steel-corrosion problems. However, the ability of FRP materials to redistribute loads and moments in continuous beams is questionable due to the linear-elastic behavior of such materials up to failure. This paper presents the experimental results of four reinforced concrete beams with rectangular cross section of 200×300?mm continuous over two spans of 2,800 mm each. The material and the amount of longitudinal reinforcement were the main investigated parameters in this study. Two beams were reinforced with glass FRP (GFRP) bars in to different configurations while one beam was reinforced with carbon FRP bars. A steel-reinforced continuous concrete beam was also tested to compare the results. The experimental results showed that moment redistribution in FRP-reinforced continuous concrete beams is possible if the reinforcement configuration is chosen properly. Increasing the GFRP reinforcement at the midspan section compared to middle support section had positive effects on reducing midspan deflections and improving load capacity. The test results were compared to the available design models and FRP codes. It was concluded that the Canadian Standards Association Code (CSA/S806-02) could reasonably predict the failure load of the tested beams; however, it fails to predict the failure location.  相似文献

The behavior of six 1:2.5-scale reinforced concrete cantilever wall specimens having an aspect ratio of 1.5, tested to failure and subsequently repaired and strengthened using fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) sheets is investigated. Specimens were first repaired by removing heavily cracked concrete, lap splicing the fractured steel bars by welding new short bars, placing new hoops and horizontal web reinforcement, and finally casting nonshrink high-strength repair mortar. The specimens were then strengthened using FRP sheets and strips, with a view to increasing flexural as well as shear strength and ductility. In addition to different arrangements of steel and FRP reinforcement in the walls, a key parameter was the way carbon-FRP strips added for flexural strengthening were anchored; steel plates and steel angles were used to this effect. Steel plates were anchored using U-shaped glass-FRP (GFRP) strips or bonded metal anchors. Test results have shown that by using FRP reinforcement, the flexural and shear strength of the specimens can be increased. From the anchorage systems tested, metal plates combined with FRP strips appear to be quite efficient. The effectiveness of the bonded metal anchors used was generally less than that of the combination of plates and GFRP strips. In all cases, final failure of the FRP anchorage is brittle, but only occurs after the peak strength is attained and typically follows the fracture of steel reinforcement in critical areas, hence the overall behavior of the strengthened walls is moderately ductile.  相似文献

The paper describes a new working stress design methodology introduced by the writers for geosynthetic reinforced soil walls (K-Stiffness Method) that is now extended to steel reinforced soil walls. A large database of full-scale steel reinforced soil walls (a total of 20 fully instrumented wall sections) was used to develop the new design methodology. The effects of global wall stiffness, soil strength, reinforcement layer spacing, and wall height were investigated. Results of simple statistical analyses using the ratio of measured to predicted peak reinforcement loads (i.e., method bias) demonstrate the improved prediction accuracy. The AASHTO Simplified Method results in an average method bias of 1.1 with a coefficient of variation (COV) of 45%, whereas the proposed K-Stiffness Method results in an average bias of 0.95 and a COV of 32%. Soil strength was found to have limited influence on reinforcement loads for steel reinforced soil walls, especially for high shear strength soils, while global wall stiffness and wall height had a major influence on reinforcement loads.  相似文献

This paper describes the development of analytical models used to predict the response of bonded membrane retrofit concrete masonry walls subjected to out-of-plane impulse pressure loads. Full scale tests have shown significant improvement in the resistance of unreinforced concrete masonry walls retrofitted by membrane materials. The majority of the membrane retrofit concrete masonry walls survived compared to their unretrofitted counterparts that collapsed. Polymer membrane retrofit materials may be sprayed on, trowled on, or attached with adhesives to the tension face of the wall. Other membrane materials such as thin steel or aluminum sheets may be attached to the tension face of the wall using expansion screws or other structurally sound methods. Resistance functions previously presented by the writers for membrane retrofit concrete masonry walls are used in the development of the response. Single-degree-of-freedom equations are developed to predict the response of these walls to impulse pressure and the results of the analysis are compared with available full-scale tests.  相似文献

In addition to their high strength and light weight, fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite reinforcing bars offer corrosion resistance, making them a promising alternative to traditional steel reinforcing bars in concrete bridge decks. FRP reinforcement has been used in several bridge decks recently constructed in North America. The Morristown Bridge, which is located in Vermont, United States, is a single span steel girder bridge with integral abutments spanning 43.90 m. The deck is a 230 mm thick concrete continuous slab over girders spaced at 2.36 m. The entire concrete deck slab was reinforced with glass FRP (GFRP) bars in two identical layers at the top and the bottom. The bridge is well instrumented at critical locations for internal temperature and strain data collection with fiber-optic sensors. The bridge was tested for service performance using standard truck loads. The construction procedure and field test results under actual service conditions revealed that GFRP rebar provides very good and promising performance.  相似文献
