The Djoser funerary complex was meant to be a house for a god and a metaphor for the sky. Today, it is usually understood that this original work of classical architecture is a vacant house of stone “from which the gods have fled.”This difference does not have to be understood as a further sign of an irrecoverable loss of meaning. It is a historical doubling of meaning, or a duplicity. This article explores the duplicity of meaning of the Djoser complex by comparing references to architecture in the Pyramid Texts with texts of contemporary criticism, in particular, “The Pit and the Pyramid” by Jacques Derrida. 相似文献

ABSTRACTThis essay explores the art world of ALEPH: Alliance for Jewish Renewal—in order to better understand the role of particular material practices in creating a distinctive religious experience and community. One attractive characteristic of Jewish Renewal is its invitation to play artistically with Jewish canonical texts, practices, and traditions. While some might argue that play leads necessarily to a limited and fragmentary Judaism, and that more rigorous study and practice is required, others see both practice and play as routes to a deeper religious experience. Artistic play with Jewish texts and traditions is seen by Renewal Jews as experiential learning, a variety of midrash (biblical interpretation). Artistic adornment of ritual objects and garb may also be understood as hiddur mitzvah (beautifying the religious precepts). Through an examination of the work of five artists (two painters, two fabric artists, and a weaver), the essay engages the concept of “handmade midrash” (artistic works as interpretations of sacred texts); creative reinterpretations of such traditions as counting the Omer and celebrating the New Moon; and the meaning of Torah and of prayer. This essay argues that through artistic engagement with Judaism, Renewal Jews practice play. 相似文献

This article examines merchants’ shop displays in the marketplaces of Damascus, Syria, with a focus on Islamic texts and images. In Damascus, most merchants’ businesses, from the air-conditioned to the mobile vending cart, are decorated with a wide range of religious props, photographs, posters, and texts hung on walls, displayed on desks, and nestled amongst merchandise. Though it would be easy to dismiss this décor as a kind of inconsequential backdrop, I suggest that these displays, packed with symbolism and local meaning, play roles in the selling process that go beyond mere decoration. This in part has to do with their visual nature, which allows merchants to convey important characteristics about themselves in ways that words cannot. It also has to do with their religious nature, which gives the displays the ability to transform people, merchandise, and shop space through their connection to God. In short, these displays exist as a counterbalance to the work of bargaining, hawking, and other kinds of verbal selling tactics. Though most studies of markets focus on these kinds of verbal exchanges, I argue here that the visual side of marketplace transactions is just as central to the selling process. 相似文献

Contemporary landscape is an important medium that resists the environmental homogeneity and diversifies the cultural imagery. The neglect of physical experience would intensify the perception contradiction and separation between people and the site. This paper proposes to use the prototype of the interactions between the body, time, and space to build an abstract discourse to study the design dimensions of site, sight, and insight based on different elements—the three dimensions are represented as perception, conception, and live. It then focuses on how to employ design methods (including the arrangement of spatial sequence and direction, the design of thresholds in the space, the creation of texts and syntaxes, and the stimulation of events and social imagery) to form the push-pull movement in the material space, the abschattung and gestalt of ideographic texts in the meaning space, and the apperception of the social field, so as to enhance people’s perception of the landscape. This paper studies physical experience and spacetime imagery to extract and deduce the thinking of landscape design within varied dimensions, and argues that a profound and intimate relationship between man and the site can be established by organizing different elements under the ternary system of site, sight, and insight. 相似文献

This essay looks at gender issues in the teaching of architectural history. It argues that when perspectives and materials from scholarship on women are brought into the traditional curriculum, our knowledge of both history and the process of architectural production are enlarged. Using Peggy McIntosh's successful model for curriculum revision in the liberal arts, the architectural history syllabus is evaluated and ideas are proposed that would lead to a more integrative curriculum. Bias and exclusion in some of the more popular recent texts in architectural history are examined and alternative readings are suggested. The issues raised are applicable, too, for rethinking teaching approaches and attitudes in the design studio. 相似文献
