Eighteen‐node solid‐shell finite element models have been developed for the analysis of laminated composite plate/shell structures embedded with piezoelectric actuators and sensors. The explicit hybrid stabilization method is employed to formulate stabilization vectors for the uniformly reduced integrated 18‐node three‐dimensional composite solid element. Unlike conventional piezoelectric elements, the concept of the electric nodes introduced in this paper can effectively eliminate the burden of constraining the equality of the electric potential for the nodes lying on the same electrode. Furthermore, the non‐linear distribution of electric potential in the piezoelectric layer is expressed by introducing internal electric potential, which not only can simplify modelling but also obtains the same as the exact solution. In Part I of the paper, a hybrid‐stress‐assumed natural strain eight‐node solid‐shell element immune to shear, membrane, trapezoidal, thickness and dilatational lockings has been developed. Moreover, the element computational cost is reduced by enforcing admissible sparsity in the flexibility matrix. In this part of the paper, the solid‐shell element is generalized to a piezoelectric solid‐shell element. Using the two solid‐shell elements, smart structures with segmented piezoelectric sensors and actuators can be conveniently modelled. A number of problems are studied and comparisons with other ad hoc element models for smart structure modelling are presented. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Dielectric materials like electro‐active polymers (EAPs) exhibit coupled electro‐mechanical behavior at large strains. They respond by a deformation to an applied electrical field and are used in advanced industrial environments as sensors and actuators, for example, in robotics, biomimetics and smart structures. In field‐activated or electronic EAPs, the electric activation is driven by Coulomb‐type electrostatic forces, resulting in Maxwell stresses. These materials are able to provide finite actuation strains, which can even be improved by optimizing their composite microstructure. However, EAPs suffer from different types of instabilities. This concerns global structural instabilities, such as buckling and wrinkling of EAP devices, as well as local material instabilities, such as limit‐points and bifurcation‐points in the constitutive response, which induce snap‐through and fine scale localization of local states. In this work, we outline variational‐based definitions for structural and material stability, and design algorithms for accompanying stability checks in typical finite element computations. The formulation starts from stability criteria for a canonical energy minimization principle of electro‐elasto‐statics, and then shifts them over to representations related to an enthalpy‐based saddle point principle that is considered as the most convenient setting for numerical implementation. Here, global structural stability is analyzed based on a perturbation of the total electro‐mechanical energy, and related to statements of positive definiteness of incremental finite element tangent arrays. We base the local material stability on an incremental quasi‐convexity condition of the electro‐mechanical energy, inducing the positive definiteness of both the incremental electro‐mechanical moduli as well as a generalized acoustic tensor. It is shown that the incremental arrays to be analyzed in the stability criteria appear within the enthalpy‐based setting in a distinct diagonal form, with pure mechanical and pure electrical partitions. Applications of accompanying stability analyses in finite element computations are demonstrated by means of representative model problems. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this paper, the finite element formulation of a transition element for consistent coupling between shell and beam finite element models of thin‐walled beam‐like structures in thermo‐elastic problems is presented. Thin‐walled beam‐like structures modelled only with beam elements cannot be used to study local stress concentrations or to provide local mechanical or thermal boundary conditions. For this purpose, the structure has to be modelled using shell elements. However, computations using shell elements are a lot more expensive as compared to beam elements. The finite element model can be more efficient when the shell elements are used only in regions where the local effects are to be studied or local boundary conditions have to be provided. The remaining part of the structure can be modelled with beam elements. To couple these two models (i.e. shell and beam models) at transitional cross‐sections, transition elements are derived here for thermo‐elastic problems. The formulation encloses large displacement and rotational behaviour, which is important in case of thin‐walled beam‐like structures. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this paper, we present an optimal low‐order accurate piezoelectric solid‐shell element formulation to model active composite shell structures that can undergo large deformation and large overall motion. This element has only displacement and electric degrees of freedom (dofs), with no rotational dofs, and an optimal number of enhancing assumed strain (EAS) parameters to pass the patch tests (both membrane and out‐of‐plane bending). The combination of the present optimal piezoelectric solid‐shell element and the optimal solid‐shell element previously developed allows for efficient and accurate analyses of large deformable composite multilayer shell structures with piezoelectric layers. To make the 3‐D analysis of active composite shells containing discrete piezoelectric sensors and actuators even more efficient, the composite solid‐shell element is further developed here. Based on the mixed Fraeijs de Veubeke–Hu–Washizu (FHW) variational principle, the in‐plane and out‐of‐plane bending behaviours are improved via a new and efficient enhancement of the strain tensor. Shear‐locking and curvature thickness locking are resolved effectively by using the assumed natural strain (ANS) method. We also present an optimal‐control design for vibration suppression of a large deformable structure based on the general finite element approach. The linear‐quadratic regulator control scheme with output feedback is used as a control law on the basis of the state space model of the system. Numerical examples involving static analyses and dynamic analyses of active shell structures having a large range of element aspect ratios are presented. Active vibration control of a composite multilayer shell with distributed piezoelectric sensors and actuators is performed to test the present element and the control design procedure. A mixed finite element for coupled thermo‐hydro‐mechanical (THM) analysis in unsaturated porous media is proposed. Displacements, strains, the net stresses for the solid phase; pressures, pressure gradients, Darcy velocities for pore water and pore air phases; temperature, temperature gradients, the total heat flux are interpolated as independent variables. The weak form of the governing equations of coupled THM problems in porous media within the element is given on the basis of the Hu–Washizu three‐filed variational principle. The proposed mixed finite element formulation is derived. The non‐linear version of the element formulation is further derived with particular consideration of the THM constitutive model for unsaturated porous media based on the CAP model. The return mapping algorithm for the integration of the rate constitutive equation, the consistent elasto‐plastic tangent modulus matrix and the element tangent stiffness matrix are developed. For geometrical non‐linearity, the co‐rotational formulation approach is utilized. Numerical results demonstrate the capability and the performance of the proposed element in modelling progressive failure characterized by strain localization and the softening behaviours caused by thermal and chemical effects. Advanced reinforced composite structures incorporating piezoelectric sensors and actuators are increasingly becoming important due to the development of smart structures. These structures offer potential benefits in a wide range of engineering applications such as vibration and noise suppression, shape control and precision positioning. This paper presents a finite element formulation based on the classical laminated plate theory for laminated structures with integrated piezoelectric layers or patches, acting as sensors and actuators. The finite element model is a single layer triangular nonconforming plate/shell element with 18 degrees of freedom for the generalized displacements, and one additional electrical potential degree of freedom for each surface bonded piezoelectric element layer or patch. The control is initialized through a previous optimization of the core of the laminated structure, in order to minimize the vibration amplitude and maximize the first natural frequency. Also the optimization of the patches position is performed to maximize the piezoelectric actuators efficiency. The simulated annealing algorithm is used for these purposes. To achieve a mechanism of active control of the structure dynamic response, a feedback control algorithm is used, coupling the sensor and active piezoelectric layers or patches, and to calculate the dynamic response of the laminated structures the Newmark method is considered. The model is applied in the optimization of an illustrative adaptive laminated plate case. The influence of the position and number of piezoelectric patches, as well as the control gain, are investigated and the results are presented and discussed.  相似文献

A coupled finite element model is developed to analyse the thermo‐mechanical behaviour of a widely used polymer composite panel subject to high temperatures at service conditions. Thermo‐chemical and thermo‐mechanical models of previous researchers have been extended to study the thermo‐chemical decomposition, internal heat and mass transfer, deformation and the stress state of the material. The phenomena of heat and mass transfer and thermo‐mechanical deformation are simulated using three sets of governing equations, i.e. energy, gas mass diffusion and deformation equations. These equations are then assembled into a coupled matrix equation using the Bubnov–Galerkin finite element formulation and then solved simultaneously at each time interval. An experimentally tested 1.09 cm thick glass‐fibre woven‐roving/polyester resin composite panel is analysed using the numerical model. Results are presented in the form of temperature, pore pressure, deformation, strain and stress profiles and discussed. The maximum normal stress failure criterion is used in order to establish the load‐bearing capability of the composite panel. Significant pore gas pressure build‐ups (to 0.8 MPa and higher) have been perceived at high thermo‐chemical decomposition rates where the material experiences a complex expansion/contraction phenomenon. It is found that the composite panel experiences structural instability at elevated temperatures up to 300°C but retains its integrity even under moderate external loading. An adaptively stabilized monolithic finite element model is proposed to simulate the fully coupled thermo‐hydro‐mechanical behavior of porous media undergoing large deformation. We first formulate a finite‐deformation thermo‐hydro‐mechanics field theory for non‐isothermal porous media. Projection‐based stabilization procedure is derived to eliminate spurious pore pressure and temperature modes due to the lack of the two‐fold inf‐sup condition of the equal‐order finite element. To avoid volumetric locking due to the incompressibility of solid skeleton, we introduce a modified assumed deformation gradient in the formulation for non‐isothermal porous solids. Finally, numerical examples are given to demonstrate the versatility and efficiency of this thermo‐hydro‐mechanical model. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Application of smart piezoelectric materials in structural control is gaining momentum. Optimum placement and actuation of the smart material is an aspect of paramount importance in such structures. In this paper, we present an iterative technique to optimize the shape of piezoelectric actuators in order to achieve the desired shape of the structure. A C0‐continuous eight‐node plate finite element with five degrees of freedom is employed. A gradientless shape design procedure based on the residual voltages is developed. It aims at minimizing the quadratic measure of the global displacement residual error between the desired and the current structural configuration. The actuators gradually adapt to a shape that is most efficient in resisting the external excitation. The present technique can be well suited for any static and time‐varying excitation. In vibration control it is often necessary to create modal sensors and actuators in order to observe or excite some specific modes. Such modal sensors and actuators alleviate spillover problems and thus they avoid exhaustive signal processing. Several numerical examples for static as well as dynamic cases are presented to demonstrate the efficacy of the present technique. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper presents a theoretical and finite element (FE) formulation of a three‐layered smart beam with two piezoelectric layers acting as sensors or actuators. For the definition of the mechanical model a partial layerwise theory is considered for the approximation of the displacement field of the core and piezoelectric face layers. An electrical model for different electric boundary conditions (EBC), namely, electroded layers with either closed‐ or open‐circuit electrodes with electric potential prescribed or layers without electrodes, is considered. Using a variational formulation, the direct piezoelectric effect for the different EBC is physically incorporated into the mechanical model through appropriate approximations of the electric field in the axial and transverse directions. An FE model of a three‐layered smart beam with different EBC is proposed considering a fully coupled electro‐mechanical theory through the use of effective stiffness parameters and a modified static condensation. FE solutions of the quasi‐static electrical and mechanical actuations and natural frequencies are presented. Comparisons with numerical FE and analytical solutions available in the literature demonstrate the representativeness of the developed theory and the effectiveness of the proposed FE model for different EBC. This paper presents an application of the extended finite element method (X‐FEM) to the analysis of fracture in piezoelectric materials. These materials are increasingly used in actuators and sensors. New applications can be found as constituents of smart composites for adaptive electromechanical structures. Under in service loading, phenomena of crack initiation and propagation may occur due to high electromechanical field concentrations. In the past few years, the X‐FEM has been applied mostly to model cracks in structural materials. The present paper focuses at first on the definition of new enrichment functions suitable for cracks in piezoelectric structures. At second, generalized domain integrals are used for the determination of crack tip parameters. The approach is based on specific asymptotic crack tip solutions, derived for piezoelectric materials. We present convergence results in the energy norm and for the stress intensity factors, in various settings. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Quasi-static shape control of a smart structure may be achieved through optimizing the applied electric fields, loci, shapes and sizes of piezoelectric actuators attached to the structure. In this paper, a finite element analysis (FEA) software has been developed for analyzing static deformation of smart composite plate structures with non-rectangular shaped PZT patches as actuators. The mechanical deformation of the smart composite plate is modeled using a 3rd order plate theory, while the electric field is simulated based on a layer-wise theory. The finite element formulation is verified by comparing with experimentally measured deformation. Numerical results are obtained for the optimum values of the electric field in the PZT actuators to achieve the desired shape using the linear least square (LLS) method. The numerical results demonstrate the influence of the shapes of actuators.  相似文献

In nano‐structures, the influence of surface effects on the properties of material is highly important because the ratio of surface to volume at the nano‐scale level is much higher than that of the macro‐scale level. In this paper, a novel temperature‐dependent multi‐scale model is presented based on the modified boundary Cauchy‐Born (MBCB) technique to model the surface, edge, and corner effects in nano‐scale materials. The Lagrangian finite element formulation is incorporated into the heat transfer analysis to develop the thermo‐mechanical finite element model. The temperature‐related Cauchy‐Born hypothesis is implemented by using the Helmholtz free energy to evaluate the temperature effect in the atomistic level. The thermo‐mechanical multi‐scale model is applied to determine the temperature related characteristics at the nano‐scale level. The first and second derivatives of free energy density are computed using the first Piola‐Kirchhoff stress and tangential stiffness tensor at the macro‐scale level. The concept of MBCB is introduced to capture the surface, edge, and corner effects. The salient point of MBCB model is the definition of radial quadrature used at the surface, edge, and corner elements as an indicator of material behavior. The characteristics of quadrature are derived by interpolating the data from the atomic level laid in a circular support around the quadrature in a least‐square approach. Finally, numerical examples are modeled using the proposed computational algorithm, and the results are compared with the fully atomistic model to illustrate the performance of MBCB multi‐scale model in the thermo‐mechanical analysis of metallic nano‐scale devices. This study develops a novel multiscale analysis method to predict thermo‐mechanical performance of periodic porous materials with interior surface radiation. In these materials, thermal radiation effect at microscale has an important impact on the macroscopic temperature and stress field, which is our particular interest in this paper. Firstly, the multiscale asymptotic expansions for computing the dynamic thermo‐mechanical coupling problem, which considers the mutual interaction between temperature and displacement field, are given successively. Then, the corresponding numerical algorithm based on the finite element‐difference method is brought forward in details. Finally, some numerical results are presented to verify the validity and relevancy of the proposed method by comparing it with a direct finite element analysis with detailed numerical models. The comparison shows that the new method is effective and valid for predicting the thermo‐mechanical performance and can capture the microstructure behavior of periodic porous materials exactly.s Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A new piezolaminated sandwich type structure to be eventually used as a smart wall for active control of sound radiated by harmonically excited thin walled structures is proposed. The present study presents the equations of motion of the new adaptive sandwich structures in a sufficiently accurate model in a form readily for solution either in closed-form or by approximate methods. The theoretical natural frequencies are compared with an approximate evaluation and test results yielding a good correlation. It also yields the axial strains and the curvature of the composite beam leading to the calculation of equivalent mechanical loads produced by the piezoceramic actuator for inclusion in a finite element code. The numerical results are compared with experimental ones obtained during a test series on a cantilever sandwich beam equipped with piezoceramic sensors and actuators and constructed according to the new proposed concept. The influence of the input voltage on the performance of the new sandwich structure is investigated. The beam tip deflection induced by the piezoceramic actuators is measured and compared with numerical and finite element predictions to yield a very good match. Both the numerical and the experimental results show the applicability of the new proposed concept.  相似文献

The paper presents aspects of the finite element formulation of momentum and energy conserving algorithms for the non‐linear dynamic analysis of shell‐like structures. The key contribution is a detailed analysis of the implementation of a Simó–Tarnow‐type conservation scheme in a recently developed new mixed finite shell element. This continuum‐based shell element provides a well‐defined interface to strain‐driven constitutive stress updates algorithms. It is based on the classic brick‐type trilinear displacement element and is equipped with specific gradient‐type enhanced strain modes and shell‐typical assumed strain modifications. The excellent performance of the proposed dynamic shell formulation with respect to conservation properties and numerical stability behaviour is demonstrated by means of three representative numerical examples of elastodynamics which exhibit complex free motions of flexible structures undergoing large strains and large rigid‐body motions. In this paper, a new method for computing eigenvalue and eigenvector derivatives of asymmetric non‐conservative systems with distinct eigenvalues is presented. Several approaches have been proposed for eigenderivative analysis of systems with asymmetric and non‐positive‐definite mass, damping and stiffness matrices. The proposed formulation that is developed by combining the modal and algebraic methods neither have the complications of modal methods in calculating the complex left and right eigenvector derivatives nor suffer from numerical instability problems usually associated with algebraic methods. The method is applied to a functionally graded material (FGM) plate actively controlled by piezoelectric sensor/actuators. In this system, the feedback signal applied to each actuator patch is implemented as a function of the electric potential in its corresponding sensor patch. The use of this closed‐loop controlling system leads to a non‐self‐adjoint system with complex eigenvalues and eigenvectors. A finite element model is developed for static and dynamic analysis of closed‐loop controlled FGM plate. The first‐ and second‐order approximations of Taylor expansion are used to estimate the corresponding changes in the plate modal properties due to change in design parameters (the displacement feedback gains and the piezoelectric layer thickness in each S/A pair).
