A thin, eight‐node, tri‐linear displacement, hexahedral finite element is the starting point for the derivation of a constant membrane stress resultant, constant bending stress resultant shell finite element. The derivation begins by introducing a Taylor series expansion for the stress distribution in the isoparametric co‐ordinates of the element. The effect of the Taylor series expansion for the stress distribution is to explicitly identify those strain modes of the element that are conjugate to the mean or average stress and the linear variation in stress. The constant membrane stress resultants are identified with the mean stress components, and the constant bending stress resultants are identified with the linear variation in stress through the thickness along with in‐plane linear variations of selected components of the transverse shear stress. Further, a plane‐stress constitutive assumption is introduced, and an explicit treatment of the finite element's thickness is introduced. A number of elastic simulations show the useful results that can be obtained (tip‐loaded twisted beam, point‐loaded hemisphere, point‐loaded sphere, tip‐loaded Raasch hook, and a beam bent into a ring). All of the gradient/divergence operators are evaluated in closed form providing unequivocal evaluations of membrane and bending strain rates along with the appropriate divergence calculations involving the membrane stress and bending stress resultants. The fact that a hexahedral shell finite element has two distinct surfaces aids sliding interface algorithms when a shell folds back on itself when subjected to large deformations. A transition element is presented for meshes containing uniform strain hexahedral and tetrahedral finite elements. It is shown that the volume of the standard uniform strain hexahedron is identical to that of a polyhedron with 14 vertices and 24 triangular faces. Based on this equivalence, a transition element is developed as a simple modification of the uniform strain hexahedron. The transition element makes use of a general method for hourglass control and satisfies first‐order patch tests. Example problems in linear elasticity are included to demonstrate the application of the element. Copyright © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. A stabilized scheme is developed for mixed finite element methods for strongly coupled diffusion problems in solids capable of large deformations. Enhanced assumed strain techniques are employed to cure spurious oscillation patterns of low‐order displacement/pressure mixed formulations in the incompressible limit for quadrilateral elements and brick elements. A study is presented that shows how hourglass instabilities resulting from geometrically nonlinear enhanced assumed strain methods have to be distinguished from pressure oscillation patterns due to the violation of the inf‐sup condition. Moreover, an element formulation is proposed that provides stable results with respect to both types of instabilities. Comparisons are drawn between material models for incompressible solids of Mooney–Rivlin type and models for standard diffusion in solids with incompressible matrices such as polymeric gels. Representative numerical examples underline the ability of the proposed element formulation to cure instabilities of low‐order mixed formulations. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A new smoothed finite element method (S‐FEM) with tetrahedral elements for finite strain analysis of nearly incompressible solids is proposed. The proposed method is basically a combination of the F‐bar method and edge‐based S‐FEM with tetrahedral elements (ES‐FEM‐T4) and is named ‘F‐barES‐FEM‐T4’. F‐barES‐FEM‐T4 inherits the accuracy and shear locking‐free property of ES‐FEM‐T4. At the same time, it also inherits the volumetric locking‐free property of the F‐bar method. The isovolumetric part of the deformation gradient ( F iso) is derived from the F of ES‐FEM‐T4, whereas the volumetric part ( F vol) is derived from the cyclic smoothing of J(=det( F )) between elements and nodes. Some demonstration analyses confirm that F‐barES‐FEM‐T4 with a sufficient number of cyclic smoothings suppresses the pressure oscillation in nearly incompressible materials successfully with no increase in DOF. Moreover, they reveal that our method is capable of relaxing the corner locking issue arising at the corner in the cylinder barreling analysis. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

We propose a new approach for the stabilization of linear tetrahedral finite elements in the case of nearly incompressible transient solid dynamics computations. Our method is based on a mixed formulation, in which the momentum equation is complemented by a rate equation for the evolution of the pressure field, approximated with piecewise linear, continuous finite element functions. The pressure equation is stabilized to prevent spurious pressure oscillations in computations. Incidentally, it is also shown that many stabilized methods previously developed for the static case do not generalize easily to transient dynamics. Extensive tests in the context of linear and nonlinear elasticity are used to corroborate the claim that the proposed method is robust, stable, and accurate. The finite cell method (FCM) is an immersed domain finite element method that combines higher‐order non‐boundary‐fitted meshes, weak enforcement of Dirichlet boundary conditions, and adaptive quadrature based on recursive subdivision. Because of its ability to improve the geometric resolution of intersected elements, it can be characterized as an immersogeometric method. In this paper, we extend the FCM, so far only used with Cartesian hexahedral elements, to higher‐order non‐boundary‐fitted tetrahedral meshes, based on a reformulation of the octree‐based subdivision algorithm for tetrahedral elements. We show that the resulting TetFCM scheme is fully accurate in an immersogeometric sense, that is, the solution fields achieve optimal and exponential rates of convergence for h‐refinement and p‐refinement, if the immersed geometry is resolved with sufficient accuracy. TetFCM can leverage the natural ability of tetrahedral elements for local mesh refinement in three dimensions. Its suitability for problems with sharp gradients and highly localized features is illustrated by the immersogeometric phase‐field fracture analysis of a human femur bone. We describe an algorithm which generates tetrahedral decomposition of a general solid body, whose surface is given as a collection of triangular facets. The principal idea is to modify the constraints in such a way as to make them appear in an unconstrained triangulation of the vertex set à priori. The vertex set positions are randomized to guarantee existence of a unique triangulation which satisfies the Delaunay empty‐sphere property. (Algorithms for robust, parallelized construction of such triangulations are available.) In order to make the boundary of the solid appear as a collection of tetrahedral faces, we iterate two operations, edge flip and edge split with the insertion of additional vertex, until all of the boundary facets are present in the tetrahedral mesh. The outcome of the vertex insertion is another triangulation of the input surfaces, but one which is represented as a subset of the tetrahedral faces. To determine if a constraining facet is present in the unconstrained Delaunay triangulation of the current vertex set, we use the results of Rajan which re‐formulate Delaunay triangulation as a linear programming problem. In this article, we develop a dynamic version of the variational multiscale (D‐VMS) stabilization for nearly/fully incompressible solid dynamics simulations of viscoelastic materials. The constitutive models considered here are based on Prony series expansions, which are rather common in the practice of finite element simulations, especially in industrial/commercial applications. Our method is based on a mixed formulation, in which the momentum equation is complemented by a pressure equation in rate form. The unknown pressure, displacement, and velocity are approximated with piecewise linear, continuous finite element functions. To prevent spurious oscillations, the pressure equation is augmented with a stabilization operator specifically designed for viscoelastic problems, in that it depends on the viscoelastic dissipation. We demonstrate the robustness, stability, and accuracy properties of the proposed method with extensive numerical tests in the case of linear and finite deformations.  相似文献

A least-squares approach is presented for implementing uniform strain triangular and tetrahedral finite elements. The basis for the method is a weighted least-squares formulation in which a linear displacement field is fit to an element's nodal displacements. By including a greater number of nodes on the element boundary than is required to define the linear displacement field, it is possible to eliminate volumetric locking common to fully integrated lower-order elements. Such results can also be obtained using selective or reduced integration schemes, but the present approach is fundamentally different from those. The method is computationally efficient and can be used to distribute surface loads on an element edge or face in a continuously varying manner between vertex, mid-edge and mid-face nodes. Example problems in two- and three-dimensional linear elasticity are presented. Element types considered in the examples include a six-node triangle, eight-node tetrahedron, and ten-node tetrahedron. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A novel finite element (FE) formulation with adaptive mesh rezoning for large deformation problems is proposed. The proposed method takes the advantage of the selective smoothed FE method (S‐FEM), which has been recently developed as a locking‐free FE formulation with strain smoothing technique. We adopt the selective face‐based smoothed/node‐based smoothed FEM (FS/NS‐FEM‐T4) and edge‐based smoothed/node‐based smoothed FEM (ES/NS‐FEM‐T3) basically but modify them partly so that our method can handle any kind of material constitutive models other than elastic models. We also present an adaptive mesh rezoning method specialized for our S‐FEM formulation with material constitutive models in total form. Because of the modification of the selective S‐FEMs and specialization of adaptive mesh rezoning, our method is locking‐free for severely large deformation problems even with the use of tetrahedral and triangular meshes. The formulation details for static implicit analysis and several examples of analysis of the proposed method are presented in this paper to demonstrate its efficiency. The control‐volume mixed finite element method is formulated for and applied to a computational domain consisting of a tetrahedral partitioning to solve the steady groundwater flow equations. Test functions consistent with piecewise constant and piecewise linear pressure distributions are used in the formulation. Comparisons are made with a standard mixed finite element formulation using lowest‐order Raviart Thomas basis functions. Results suggest that the control‐volume based formulation is a viable alternative to the standard formulation. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A new method to track massless particles in a three‐dimensional flow field is presented. The method is based on an element‐by‐element approach coupled with a predictor–corrector shooting scheme and does not use any time step. By analogy with time‐dependent schemes, the number of shootings is related to an equivalent number of time steps. The method has been implemented in a finite element framework using unstructured tetrahedral finite element meshes. However, it is general enough so that it can be implemented in finite difference and finite volume frameworks as well. It has been tested on a variety of flow systems namely: the Poiseuille flow in an empty circular pipe, the rotating flow in a stirred tank, the shear flow in a square tank and the flow through a static mixer. Accuracy has been found to depend on the accuracy of the velocity computation, the number of points per element and the level of mesh refinement. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The aim of the paper is to study the capabilities of the extended finite element method (XFEM) to achieve accurate computations in non‐smooth situations such as crack problems. Although the XFEM method ensures a weaker error than classical finite element methods, the rate of convergence is not improved when the mesh parameter h is going to zero because of the presence of a singularity. The difficulty can be overcome by modifying the enrichment of the finite element basis with the asymptotic crack tip displacement solutions as well as with the Heaviside function. Numerical simulations show that the modified XFEM method achieves an optimal rate of convergence (i.e. like in a standard finite element method for a smooth problem). For hyperelastic shells with finite rotations and large strains a p‐finite element formulation is presented accommodating general kinematic assumptions, interpolation polynomials and particularly general three‐dimensional hyperelastic constitutive laws. This goal is achieved by hierarchical, high‐order shell models. The tangent stiffness matrices for the hierarchical shell models are derived by computer algebra. Both non‐hierarchical, nodal as well as hierarchical element shape functions are admissible. Numerical experiments show the high‐order formulation to be less prone to locking effects. The problem of constructing hierarchic bases for finite element discretization of the spaces H1, H ( curl ), H ( div ) and L2 on tetrahedral elements is addressed. A simple and efficient approach to ensuring conformity of the approximations across element interfaces is described. Hierarchic bases of arbitrary polynomial order are presented. It is shown how these may be used to construct finite element approximations of arbitrary, non‐uniform, local order approximation on unstructured meshes of curvilinear tetrahedral elements. This paper presents a novel face‐based smoothed finite element method (FS‐FEM) to improve the accuracy of the finite element method (FEM) for three‐dimensional (3D) problems. The FS‐FEM uses 4‐node tetrahedral elements that can be generated automatically for complicated domains. In the FS‐FEM, the system stiffness matrix is computed using strains smoothed over the smoothing domains associated with the faces of the tetrahedral elements. The results demonstrated that the FS‐FEM is significantly more accurate than the FEM using tetrahedral elements for both linear and geometrically non‐linear solid mechanics problems. In addition, a novel domain‐based selective scheme is proposed leading to a combined FS/NS‐FEM model that is immune from volumetric locking and hence works well for nearly incompressible materials. The implementation of the FS‐FEM is straightforward and no penalty parameters or additional degrees of freedom are used. The computational efficiency of the FS‐FEM is found better than that of the FEM. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this paper, a mixed spectral element formulation is presented for planar, linear elasticity. The degrees of freedom for the stress are integrated traction components, ie, surface force components. As a result, the tractions between elements are continuous. The formulation is based on minimization of the complementary energy subject to the constraints that the stress field should satisfy equilibrium of forces and moments. The Lagrange multiplier, which enforces equilibrium of forces, is the displacement field and the Lagrange multiplier, which enforces equilibrium of moments, is the rotation. The formulation satisfies equilibrium of forces pointwise if the body forces are piecewise polynomial. Equilibrium of moments is weakly satisfied. Results of the method are given on orthogonal and curvilinear domains, and an example with a point singularity is given.  相似文献

Numerical modelling of exterior acoustics problems involving infinite medium requires truncation of the medium at a finite distance from the obstacle or the structure and use of non‐reflecting boundary condition at this truncation surface to simulate the asymptotic behaviour of radiated waves at far field. In the context of the finite element method, Bayliss–Gunzburger–Turkel (BGT) boundary conditions are well suited since they are local in both space and time. These conditions involve ‘damper’ operators of various orders, which work on acoustic pressure p and they have been used in time harmonic problems widely and in transient problems in a limited way. Alternative forms of second‐order BGT operators, which work on (time derivative of p) had been suggested in an earlier paper for 3D problems but they were neither implemented nor validated. This paper presents detailed formulations of these second‐order dampers both for 2D and 3D problems, implements them in a finite element code and validates them using appropriate example problems. The developed code is capable of handling exterior acoustics problems involving both Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A general approach to the dimensional reduction of non‐linear finite element models of solid dynamics is presented. For the Newmark implicit time‐discretization, the computationally most expensive phase is the repeated solution of the system of linear equations for displacement increments. To deal with this, it is shown how the problem can be formulated in an approximation (Ritz) basis of much smaller dimension. Similarly, the explicit Newmark algorithm can be also written in a reduced‐dimension basis, and the computation time savings in that case follow from an increase in the stable time step length. In addition, the empirical eigenvectors are proposed as the basis in which to expand the incremental problem. This basis achieves approximation optimality by using computational data for the response of the full model in time to construct a reduced basis which reproduces the full system in a statistical sense. Because of this ‘global’ time viewpoint, the basis need not be updated as with reduced bases computed from a linearization of the full finite element model. If the dynamics of a finite element model is expressed in terms of a small number of basis vectors, the asymptotic cost of the solution with the reduced model is lowered and optimal scalability of the computational algorithm with the size of the model is achieved. At the same time, numerical experiments indicate that by using reduced models, substantial savings can be achieved even in the pre‐asymptotic range. Furthermore, the algorithm parallelizes very efficiently. The method we present is expected to become a useful tool in applications requiring a large number of repeated non‐linear solid dynamics simulations, such as convergence studies, design optimization, and design of controllers of mechanical systems. This paper describes the development of a numerical procedure for predicting deformations and stresses in a loaded two‐dimensional membrane exhibiting micropolar or Cosserat constitutive behaviour. The procedure employs a conventional finite element (FE) mesh together with a dual mesh of interconnected control volumes, each of which must satisfy equilibrium. A series of patch tests covering a variety of simple strain states are used to validate the procedure that is then employed to predict the stress concentration in a membrane containing a small hole. The predictions provided by the procedure are compared with those given previously by FEs. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
