This paper introduces a domain-specific search engine, which was developed to take advantage of the growing online product information for surveying the virtual product market. Knowledge about a product was uniquely incorporated with query expansion operations and the extended Boolean model retrieval approach to handle issues associated with the search engine development. The search engine was designed to (1) represent and utilize the represented knowledge in the product domain; (2) identify online product information; and (3) then evaluate the collected online product information. A prototype search engine for testing was developed and statistically validated with five data sets with each data set being derived from a different type of product according to MasterFormat (Alexandria, Va.) categorization. The validation results indicated that compared with the tested general search engine or aggregated information service, the prototype was able to identify more distinct product manufacturers for procurement-related decision support.  相似文献

Many emerging architectural/engineering/construction (A/E/C) technology investments are of strategic importance and may create future growth opportunities. Therefore, from the strategic perspective, management needs a better method that can quantify the strategic value of technology investment and suggest optimal investment strategies when the future is uncertain. This paper presents a quantitative valuation method based on modern option pricing theory for evaluating major investments in emerging A/E/C technologies. This framework considers specifically the technology investment risk and embedded managerial options. It further aligns the investment evaluation process with the financial market. The analysis may help A/E/C firms more accurately evaluate investments in emerging technologies, such as information technology and automation, and make strategic investment decisions under uncertainty.  相似文献

With the advancement of the semantic web, the construction industry is at a stage where intelligent knowledge management systems can be used. Such systems support more effective collaboration, where virtual teams of skilled users, not software, exchange ideas, decisions, and best practice. To achieve that, there is a need to create consistent semantic representation of construction knowledge. Existing representations, in the form of classification systems and product data models, lack effective modeling of concept semantics—a fundamental requirement for human-based exchange of knowledge. Toward this objective, this paper presents a domain taxonomy that was developed as part of the e-COGNOS project. The taxonomy was developed as a first step in the establishment of domain ontology for construction. The taxonomy was developed to be process-centered and to allow for utilization of already existing classification systems (BS6100, Master Format, and UniClass, for example). The taxonomy uses seven major domains to classify construction concepts: Process, Product, Project, Actor, Resource, Technical Topics, and Systems. The taxonomy was developed and validated through extensive interaction with domain experts. The taxonomy was used to develop a prototype ontology for the construction domain including semantic relationships and axioms. The ontology was used to support several applications in semantic knowledge management as part of the e-COGNOS portal, including semantic indexing and retrieval of information and ontology-based collaborative project development.  相似文献

Global competition and advances in information technology (IT) are placing new demands on the management techniques used on architectural, engineering, and construction (A/E/C) projects. There are opportunities as well as challenges. The revolution under way in the fields of data sharing and transmission, information processing, and telecommunication technology is opening up new possibilities in the A/E/C industry for effectively meeting these market demands. The dynamic nature of construction processes, the interdependence of various participating entities, and the need for teamwork, flexibility, and a high degree of coordination suggest IT can be profitably employed for effective project management in the A/E/C industry. The distinctive features of A/E/C projects make the task of project management particularly appropriate for applications of IT tools.  相似文献

Exchanging data between different software systems is a critical requirement in the architecture, engineering, and construction industry, where task specific data models and public data exchange standards have been applied for data representation and exchange. Matching two data models effectively and efficiently is a challenging task, especially when performed manually, due to the large size and the complexity of today’s data schemas. Some existing computer-aided approaches have attempted to automate matching of different schemas. These approaches work and reduce human effort under specific conditions; however, they do not always result in an accurate matching of two schemas. Achieving schema matching result comparable in accuracy to manual matching requires leveraging domain specific knowledge. Yet utilization of domain knowledge for schema matching rarely has been incorporated in prior studies. In this paper, we present a semiautomated approach that leverages domain knowledge to improve the schema matching process. Compared to a generic schema matching approach, the approach discussed in this paper is able to generate more accurate results due to the incorporation of domain specific constraints, which are represented and reasoned with to create a match between data models. A prototype was developed to validate this approach through a number of real world test cases, including the matching of two publicly-available data exchange standards.  相似文献

Extracting the right information at the right time is vital in any research project. Moreover, researchers generally seek innovative “knowledge mining” techniques for optimizing their research efforts within constrained time frames and with scarce resources. Meanwhile, rapid developments in the fields of computing and information technology drive the accelerated globalization process in both industry and academia. This paper explores some of the emerging technologies and associated research methodologies from an information supply chain perspective. An application in a recent Internet based two-phase questionnaire survey for design/build contractor selection provides a useful case study in the structuring of an innovative knowledge mining strategy. This experience feeds into the formulation of a “high-velocity” knowledge mining framework and a set of guidelines—to facilitate and enhance such innovative construction management research, while dealing with some initial issues/problems in the Internet based research environment. Furthermore, some critical success factors, key performance indicators, and mining strategies are consolidated for marshalling both vivid and tacit knowledge sources, such as by “exploiting” Internet resources for more creative and efficient construction management research.  相似文献

The ongoing plethora of rehabilitation in the infrastructure domain requires more planning and integration during design and construction. To achieve this, there is a need for developing and using semantic (ontology-based) mechanisms for the exchange of development knowledge among all project stakeholders. This paper presents a distributed ontology architecture for knowledge management in highway construction. With every other utility tied to the highway geometry, the architecture is intended to be the base for a cross-discipline knowledge exchange in the infrastructure domain. The architecture presents highway knowledge on three levels: domain knowledge (an umbrella for infrastructure shared knowledge), application knowledge (representation of highway-specific knowledge), and user knowledge (an enterprise-specific representation of highway knowledge). The proposed architecture models highway concepts using six major root concepts: project, process, product, actor, resources, and technical topics (attributes and constraints). The architecture was developed using rigorous knowledge acquisition and ontology development techniques. It was developed as an extension for the e-COGNOS ontology. Engineering education is currently facing unprecedented challenges and opportunities. Engineering institutions are being called upon to educate the architectural, engineering, and construction (A/E/C) professionals of tomorrow by complementing their traditional engineering education with the transfusion of information technology and process automation concepts through the necessary reorganization of classes and academic curricula. This paper presents a framework for an interdisciplinary course sequence in civil engineering, project management, and information technology centered on the concepts of fully integrated and automated project processes (FIAPP). The described sequence enables students to benefit pedagogically from working in truly multidisciplinary teams, to enrich their educational experience by bringing real world projects to academic settings, and to teach them fundamental principles in integration and automation of project processes highlighting the value of such integrated project management systems (information management, planning, design, construction management, procurement, operations, and maintenance). Furthermore, the course sequence addresses deficiencies in current one-dimensional educational curricula and needs expressed by educators, students, and industry professionals. The paper presents experiences and knowledge gained from the aforementioned academic sequence on FIAPP and on the utilization of three-dimensional computer models and associated databases in the management of A/E/C processes.  相似文献

The paper argues that an effective solution to information and knowledge management (KM) needs of practitioners in the construction industry can be found in the provision of an adapted knowledge environment that makes use of user profiling and document summarization techniques based on information retrieval sciences. The conceptualization of the domain through ontology takes a pivotal role in the proposed knowledge environment and provides a semantic referential to ensure relevance, accuracy, and completeness of information. A set of KM services articulated around the selected ontology have been developed, using the Web services model, tested, and validated in real organizational settings. Schemas for a subject domain can make reading new information about that domain easier. It was hypothesized that when students read about familiar topics, they use a reinstatement-and-integration strategy in which the familiar knowledge they encounter is retrieved from long-term memory, along with some information about the original context in which those facts were learned. Two experiments that focused on the integration of knowledge from different sources were conducted to investigate whether readers use such a strategy when reading expository text about recently learned topics. The study focuses on developing a unified approach to define information specificities for key performance indicators (KPIs). Borrowing from the time-system theory, the paper defines different types of KPI and identifies that a KPI has two dimensions—knowledge specificity and time specificity. Different approaches are presented to analyze knowledge and time sensitivities. This paper addresses a key question related to enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems applications in the engineering construction industry: what are the areas of business processes within the engineering construction industry where ERP cannot be used to collect KPIs related to business processes? The writers review empirical and specialized processes within the construction industry to identify business processes not covered by existing ERP systems. A survey focused on qualitative aspects of ERP systems implementation in engineering construction firms was conducted among ERP-enablers in the construction industry and provided a basis for the presented case study. The construction industry is an information-intensive industry and heavily relies on documents, including physical and virtual documentation and models, to exchange context-sensitive information among different project participants. Many research efforts have been made to help manage construction information; however, few of them considered the context-sensitive nature of the information. In this paper, the writers propose a new approach to facilitate the management of context-sensitive construction information that is stored in different textual documents. The approach addresses the context-sensitive nature of construction information by representing contexts in ontologies and by using contexts as indices of the information. The approach also presents a reasoning mechanism that leverages the semantically rich features of ontologies to reason about contexts to evaluate their applicabilities. Two case studies were conducted, and the results showed the proposed approach can effectively retrieve, classify, and manage construction information. In the architecture/engineering/construction (AEC) industry, a large number of data models (e.g., data exchange standards and task-specific data models) have been created and utilized to represent and exchange data in software packages. To meet the ever-expanding requirements for modeling real world information, the data models need to be updated frequently. Accordingly, those who need to implement these data models in their AEC-related software which often requires that they possess civil engineering domain knowledge, have to change their existing implementations for compliance with these models to account for the latest update. Before adopting changes of such data models, those developers working at AEC-related software companies must precisely identify which parts of the data models have been modified in a new release. Given the growing scale and complexity of today’s data models involved in the AEC domain, identification of differences in two versions of a data model is a time-consuming and error-prone process, when performed manually. A semiautomated approach that identifies the differences in two versions of a data model could enable a rapid update of existing implementations of the model in AEC-related software. Due to the likelihood of having some commonality between the two versions of a model, it is possible to automatically identify version differences accurately. In this paper, we present an approach for detecting the differences between two releases of the same data model accurately and efficiently. This approach incorporates taxonomy for describing possible differences between two versions of a data model and provides a way to classify these differences. A prototype is implemented and used to validate the approach with the recent releases of some real world data models. The approach developed in this paper can help AEC-related software developers adopt and implement data models in their software systems.  相似文献

Reviews the book, Handbook of Workplace Violence by E. Kevin Kelloway, Julian Barling, and Joseph J. Hurrell Jr. (see record 2006-03272-000). According to the Cambridge University dictionary, a handbook contains "the most important and useful information about a subject." This Handbook of Workplace Violence admirably fits this definition. In the book, the authors have assembled 26 chapters that summarize the very vast domain of violence research that pertains to the workplace. Each chapter, all written by academic researchers who are deeply involved in the field of workplace violence, summarizes a unique aspect of workplace violence. The authors of the handbook are organizational psychologists and they approach this topic from a social-organizational perspective. This handbook would, thus, be of great interest to similarly-minded psychologists. However, the scope of the handbook, covering violence in multiple settings and from multiple perspectives, would attract readers from a variety of psychological domains. In essence, this handbook has a broad readership and ably meets its goal of "summarizing the state of current knowledge and charting the course for future research." Conceptualizing workplace violence broadly, it provides a wide-ranging survey of the current state of the field. Highlighting both the enormity of the problem and the lack of extant information on the causes and course of workplace violence, this book provides important directions for future research. It is a book that would be valuable to any student or researcher interested in pursuing questions about the nature, course, and prevention of violence in the workplace. The pricing strategy predominantly used in construction is cost based. But this pricing logic may lead to the underpricing or overpricing of a bid offer. In response to this problem, alternate pricing strategies are proposed in this paper that make use of market-based approaches. These models are centered on marketing intelligence functions. In this paper, marketing intelligence systems developed and used in manufacturing industries are explored, including marketing research, marketing information systems, and decision support systems. The current developments and practices of marketing intelligence in construction are reviewed. The findings of a survey that investigates the marketing intelligence and pricing strategy practices of the largest 400 U.S. contractors are presented. In conclusion, it is discovered that contractors use mostly traditional marketing intelligence strategies. It is recommended that contractors develop computerized intelligence activities such as using resources on the Internet and developing management information systems and decision support systems. As expected, it is found that “marketing intelligence capabilities” is a significant variable associated with pricing strategy.  相似文献

New information technology developments continue to have a significant impact on large-scale architectural∕engineering∕construction (A∕E∕C) projects. However, the issue of whether A∕E∕C organizations are receiving adequate returns from their information technology (IT) investments remains an important managerial concern. Earlier work on financial models has concentrated on firm-wide strategies for maximizing the return of investments. Traditional financial models for measuring the value of information technology investments typically work well for static business strategies and single business scenarios. These models are inappropriate for large-scale A∕E∕C projects, which typically have multiple firms participating over a fixed project life cycle and proportionately splitting the cumulative benefits accrued over the project life cycle after their involvement on the project. To resolve these issues, the paper proposes a strategic planning framework based on IT diffusion for maximizing the value of investments in strategic capabilities. The essential steps in the strategic planning framework include environmental scan, internal scrutiny, IT diffusion analysis, and IT investment modeling. To demonstrate the framework and an integrated approach to IT investment planning, the paper presents a case study based on a large-scale A∕E∕C project.  相似文献

Comments on the article by S. C. Kalichman et al. (see record 2006-03515-009) about Internet use and coping among those with HIV/AIDS in a mostly African American sample. Using correlation, Kalichman et al. concluded that African Americans correlated with less general and health-information Internet use than did Whites. Using regression, they concluded that African Americans, as compared with Whites, were more likely to consider as credible both scientifically and nonscientifically based website information. The current author contends that the employed analytic approach may not truly determine these results. It may be very useful to conduct and report these analyses using the nominal-level approach to determine if these results are true for African Americans. The intracellular mechanisms used by insulin and insulin-like growth factors to block programmed cell death are unknown. To identify receptor structures and signaling pathways essential for anti-apoptotic effects on cells, we have created a chimeric receptor (colony-stimulating factor-1 receptor/insulin receptor chimera (CSF1R/IR)) connecting the extracellular, ligand-binding domain of the colony-stimulating factor-1 (CSF-1) receptor to the transmembrane and cytoplasmic domains of the insulin receptor. Upon activation with CSF-1, the CSF1R/IR phosphorylates itself and intracellular substrates in a manner characteristic of normal insulin receptors. CSF-1 treatment protected cells expressing the CSF1R/IR from staurosporine-induced apoptosis. A chimeric receptor (CSF1R/IRDelta960) with a deletion of 12 amino acids from its juxtamembrane domain was constructed and expressed. CSF-1-treated cells expressing the CSF1R/IRDelta960 are unable to phosphorylate IRS-1 and Shc (Chaika, O. V., Chaika, N., Volle, D. J., Wilden, P. A. , Pirrucello, S. J., and Lewis, R. E. (1997) J. Biol. Chem. 272, 11968-11974). CSF-1 stimulated glucose uptake, mitogen-activated protein kinases, and IRS-1-associated phosphatidylinositol 3' kinase in cells expressing the CSF1R/IR but not in cells expressing the CSF1R/IRDelta960. Surprisingly, the CSF1R/IRDelta960 was as effective as the CSF1R/IR in mediating CSF-1 protection of cells from staurosporine-induced apoptosis. These observations indicate that the anti-apoptotic effects of the insulin receptor cytoplasmic domain can be mediated by signaling pathways distinct from those requiring IRS-1 and Shc.  相似文献
