Using UML Profiles for Documenting Web-Based Application Frameworks

The Web now offers an exceptional infrastructure for the development of distributed collaborative services and applications. However, most of the existing applications only make use of the Web access and visualization facilities, without exploiting its distributed-processing potential capabilities. Web technologies are currently more focused on the provision of semantics to data and the design of dynamic Web pages, while paying little attention to the distributed architecture of the applications – that should go beyond client-server architectures. Application frameworks are one of the key technologies that may provide the mechanisms required for the design and development of reusable and scalable systems in these environments. However, the way to document such frameworks so they can be effectively tailored and reused still remains unresolved. In this paper we propose the use of UML profiles for documenting Web-based application frameworks, as a standard means for expressing their semantics. UML profiles allow all stakeholders of a system to share a common graphical notation and vocabulary, and permit more precise specifications and better documentation on how to use and customize applications. As an example, we build a UML profile for MultiTEL, a framework particularly well suited for the development of Internet-based multimedia and collaborative systems, and show how systems designers can use it to derive and document their applications.

Web-Based Information Systems Requirement Analysis

E-commerce application development is a growing aspect of information systems management activities within many organizations. the increasing amount of E-commerce development carried out in organizations implies that a formal methodology for such development is necessary. This article discusses several E-commerce development methodologies and proposes a customer-oriented user requirement analysis approach. A survey was conducted to examine organizations' current practice on Web-based information systems requirement analysis. Findings and recommendations are provided for information systems researchers and practitioners.

Web-Based Support for Cooperative Software Engineering

The Tatami project is building a system to support software engineering over the internet, exploiting recent advances in Web technology, interface design, and specification. Our effort to improve the usability of such systems has led us into algebraic semiotics, while our effort to develop better formal methods for distributed concurrent systems has led us into hidden algebra and fuzzy logic. This paper discusses the Tatami system design, especially its software architecture, and its user interface principles. New work in the latter area includes an extension of algebraic semiotics to dynamic multimedia interfaces, and integrating Gibsonian affordances with algebraic semiotics.

Specification of Real-Time Systems in UML

We introduce time semantics into UML class and statechart diagrams. This extends the expressiveness of UML for specification of real-time systems and allows to specify verification properties of real-time systems by means of Timed Computation Tree Logic. We furthermore propose a way to collect stereotypes for specification of real-time systems. The approach is illustrated by a case study.

From UML Models to Graph Transformation Systems

In this paper we present an approach that allows to validate properties of UML models. The approach is based on an integrated semantics for central parts of the UML. We formally cover UML use case, class, object, statechart, collaboration, and sequence diagrams. Additionally full OCL is supported in the common UML fashion. Our semantics is based on the translation of a UML model into a graph transformation system consisting of graph transformation rules and a working graph that represents the system state. By applying the rules on the working graph, the evolution of the modeled system is simulated.
