Faecal coliform concentrations were determined at stream and water inflow sampling sites within an upland catchment in North Derbyshire containing rough, semiimproved and improved pastures. The results indicated that, during its passage through the catchment, the faecal indicators of the stream increased, and this may constitute a health risk to cavers using a popular recreational cave into which the stream drains. The decline in streamwater quality suggests that a semipermanent store of bacteria existed in catchment soils, and hydrological processes operated to transfer bacteria from the land to the stream channel. Contrary to expectations, intra-catchment differences in the bacterial quality of water at inflow and stream sampling sites could not be related to the intensity of agricultural land use in adjacent areas. This is explained with reference to changes in the nature of hydrological transport pathways associated with the improvement of pastures.  相似文献

The levels of total coliform and Escherichia coli bacteria were determined within the surface soils of two upland catchments in North Yorkshire. The results indicated that enteric bacteria can survive for a sufficient period outside parent faecal material to provide a semi-permanent land store that might then be capable of contaminating upland waters following transport by hydrological processes. Significant differences in bacterial counts were found between broadly wet and dry soil moisture/vegetation zones in both catchments. This was explained by the more favourable survival conditions found where the soil moisture content was high enough to prevent the rapid desiccation and death of enteric bacteria. Significant differences were also found between the counts of total coliform and Escherichia coli bacteria in surface soils. It was concluded that the use of the total coliform group alone, as an indicator of the degree of sanitary bacterial contamination of soils, may over-estimate the true extent of contamination.  相似文献

Carbon budget for a British upland peat catchment   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
This study describes the analysis of fluvial carbon flux from an upland peat catchment in the North Pennines. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC), pH, alkalinity and calcium were measured in weekly samples, with particulate organic carbon (POC) measured from the suspended sediment load from the stream outlet of an 11.4-km(2) catchment. For calendar year 1999, regular monitoring of the catchment was supplemented with detailed quasi-continuous measurements of flow and stream temperature, and DOC for the months September through November. The measurements were used to calculate the annual flux of dissolved CO(2), dissolved inorganic carbon, DOC and POC from the catchment and were combined with CO(2) and CH(4) gaseous exchanges calculated from previously published values and the observations of water table height within the peat. The study catchment represents a net sink of 15.4+/-11.9 gC/m(2)/yr. Carbon flows calculated for the study catchment are combined with values in the literature, using a Monte Carlo method, to estimate the carbon budget for British upland peat. For all British upland peat the calculation suggests a net carbon sink of between 0.15 and 0.29 MtC/yr. This is the first study to include a comprehensive study of the fluvial export of carbon within carbon budgets and shows the size of the peat carbon sink to be smaller than previous estimates, although sensitivity analysis shows that the primary productivity rather than fluvial carbon flux is a more important element in estimating the carbon budget in this regard.  相似文献

In recent years, considerable investment has been committed to sewerage infrastructure and new sewage treatment plants in the catchment surrounding an estuarine basin along the north-west coast of England. Although this capital investment has resulted in a marked reduction in the input of bacterial loads, relatively high counts of faecal indicator organisms are still being encountered in the coastal receiving waters, and the local bathing waters continue to fail on occasions to comply with the European Community (EC) Bathing Water Directive (1976) mandatory standards. Details are given herein of a comprehensive modelling study aimed at quantifying the impact of various bacterial inputs into the estuary and surrounding coastal waters on the bathing water quality. The model domain includes the coastal area and the entire estuary (namely the Ribble) up to the tidal limits of its tributaries. Faecal coliforms have been used as the main water quality indicator organisms. The numerical model developed for this study combines a depth integrated two-dimensional coastal model and a cross-sectionally integrated one-dimensional river model, and is capable of predicting water surface elevations, velocity fields and faecal coliform concentration distributions across the entire model domain. The hydrodynamic model was calibrated using water level and velocity measurements from three surveys and then validated against measured data from three other surveys. In order to predict the faecal coliform concentration distributions, variable faecal coliform decay rates were used, i.e. different values of decay rates were applied to the coastal and riverine waters, for day- and nighttime, and for wet and dry weather conditions. The maximum and minimum decay rates used were 2.32/day and 0.71/day for the dry and wet weather surveys, respectively. The model was then applied to (i) assess the impact of previous discharge strategies and investigate the effectiveness of future capital investment works and (ii) predict the impact of a range of strategic options, including: the effects of adding UV treatment, constructing storm water storage tanks and incorporating various combined sewer overflow (CSO) discharge scenarios for different weather conditions.  相似文献

Understanding the effects of land use change on the hydrological cycle is very important for development of sustainable water resource in an upland field catchment. In this study, soil and hydrological properties in an upland field catchment, which was reclaimed partially from a forest catchment, were compared with another forest catchment. The soil properties of surface and subsurface layers were investigated in the two catchments. The soil was compacted and water-holding capacity of soil in the upland field catchment became smaller after the reclamation from forest to upland field, which decreased infiltration rate and water storage in the soil layers. We found that peak discharge and direct runoff in the upland field catchment increased compared with the forest catchment. Annual evapotranspiration from the upland field catchment tended to be lower due to the change in vegetation type and soil properties. Furthermore, a semi-distributed hydrological model was applied in the upland field catchment to understand the integrated effects of reclamation on the hydrological cycle. The model parameters, which were determined using a nonlinear optimization technique—the Shuffled Complex Evolution method (SCE), were compared between the two catchments. The Nash and Sutcliffe coefficient was used to evaluate the model performance. The simulated results indicated that evapotranspiration was decreased and change in discharge was more obvious in the surface layer. We considered that declined infiltration and water storage and increased peak discharge and direct runoff have a negative impact on water resources in the upland field catchment. This study will provide information for forest managers in planning and making decisions for land and water resource management.  相似文献

Manganese (Mn) in surface waters is a micronutrient, but elevated concentrations are toxic to fish and impair drinking water quality. In Scotland, undesirable Mn concentrations (> 0.05 mg l(-1)) occur predominantly in upland freshwaters because the acidic pH and organic nature of catchment soils favour Mn mobilisation. The relationship between upland land-use in Scotland and Mn concentrations in surface waters is reviewed. Conifer afforestation is associated with enhanced Mn in runoff. Mn is leached from conifer foliage and litter, and mature conifers enhance acid deposition and loss of Mn from acidified catchment soils. After harvesting, increased soil pools of water-soluble Mn and elevated Mn concentrations in runoff have been observed. Liming, fertiliser addition, drainage ditch construction and ploughing to improve upland pastures, and muirburn on grouse moors may also increase Mn concentrations in runoff, but the evidence is less clear-cut. The extent to which land-use influences Mn concentrations in upland catchments in Scotland is modified by catchment hydrology and soil type. Catchment geology, instream processes and standing water stratification are probably lesser influences on Mn concentrations in surface waters of upland catchments in Scotland. The location of land-use in upland catchments, especially in the riparian zone, is critical in determining its effect on Mn in runoff. Climate change is expected to increase Mn concentrations in runoff from upland catchments in Scotland because of predicted changes in soil hydrology.  相似文献

Multi‐day rainfall events appear to be an important cause of recent flooding in the UK. Hydrological data from an extensive, nested hydrometric network in the unregulated, predominantly rural Upper Eden catchment in northern England are presented for one such flood event. These highlight antecedent catchment conditions and the propagation of the multi‐day flood event during February 2004. An assessment of flood response is provided over varying scales and land use between the upland Gais Gill catchment (1.1 km2) and the larger Upper Eden catchment (616 km2). Large spatial variations in rainfall totals are identified from a dense raingauge network during the flood event and are principally related to catchment elevation. High cumulative rainfall totals for the 6‐day event, particularly at upland sites appear to be the exceptional feature of the flood event with return periods in the order of 100 years at some upland gauges. Resultant patterns of flood attenuation and translation are quantified in different areas of the catchment, highlighting the flashy response of the headwater catchments and the attenuated downstream response in the lowland environment. The study forms part of the national Catchment Hydrology And Sustainable Management (CHASM) programme.  相似文献

Land cover patterns were evaluated in 29 estuarine watersheds of South Carolina to determine relationships between urban/suburban development and estuarine habitat quality. Principal components analysis and Pearson product moment correlation analyses were used to examine the relationships between ten land cover categories and selected measures of nutrient or bacterial enrichment in the water column and contaminant enrichment in sediments. These analyses indicated strong relationships between land cover categories representing upland development and a composite measure of 24 inorganic and organic contaminants using the Effect Range Median-Quotient (ERM-Q). Similar relationships also were observed for the summed concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), pesticides, and metals. Data obtained from tidal creeks generally showed stronger correlations between urban/suburban land use and pesticides and metals compared to data obtained from larger open water habitats. Correlations between PAH concentrations and the urban/suburban land cover categories were similar between creek and open water habitats. PCB concentrations generally showed very little relationship to any of the land cover categories. Measures of nutrient enrichment, which included total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN), nitrate-nitrite, phosphorus, chlorophyll-a, and total organic carbon, were generally not significantly correlated with any land cover categories, whereas fecal coliform bacteria were significantly and positively correlated with the urban/suburban land cover categories and negatively correlated with the non-urban land cover categories. Fecal coliform correlations were stronger using data from the open water sites than from the tidal creek sites. Both ERM-Q and fecal coliform concentrations were much greater and more pervasive in watersheds with relatively high (>50%) urban/suburban cover compared to watersheds with low (<30%) urban/suburban cover. These analyses support the hypotheses that estuarine habitat quality reflects upland development patterns at large spatial scales, and that upland urbanization can result in increased risk of biological degradation and reduced safe human use of South Carolina's coastal resources.  相似文献

A two-box version of the long-term acidification model MAGIC is applied to the Upper Severn catchment, Mid-Wales. Comparison between modelled output and the observed stream- and groundwater chemistry points to the limitations of modelling, due to the inherent complexity and variability in the catchment hydrology, soils, geology and chemistry. The MAGIC model is used to produce long-term hind- and forecast predictions of average stream-, soil- and groundwater chemistry, and to simulate long-term changes in sulfate and nitrate deposition, in line with current proposals of reduction. Changes in flow-routing pathways between soil- and groundwater are simulated and the long-term effects on streamwater quality noted. The use of a long-term acidification model enabled the simulation of streamwater quality under these different case scenarios. However, the modelled output is insensitive to depositional and flow routing changes, indicating that catchment processes are not being represented to a sufficient degree. Changes in simulated output as a result of increased acidic deposition are not statistically significant, lying within the variance of long-term observed data. Simulated changes in flow routing suggest a lack of model sensitivity, in terms of the effect on stream chemistry. The need for large amounts of measured data to ensure correct model representation of the hydrology, chemistry and the heterogeneous/variable nature of upland catchments is outlined. It is vital that these long-term data are available to ensure that problems do not arise due to over-reliance by catchment managers on potentially unreliable modelled output.  相似文献

Rainwater catchment systems (RWCS) in Micronesia were sampled to assess their bacteriological water quality and to determine which RWCS characteristics had a significant impact on water quality. Total and fecal coliform bacteria tests were used to evaluate 203 catchments on 10 islands. Fifty-seven percent of the RWCS had no fecal coliform bacteria and 61% had fewer than 10 total coliform bacteria per 100 ml. Catchment characteristics were found to have a statistically significant effect on total coliform bacteria levels but they did not affect faecal coliform bacteria concentrations. Rainwater catchment systems were found to provide acceptable water in most cases but disinfection prior to consumption is still highly recommended.  相似文献

This paper reports on work carried out from June 1976 to May 1978 on feeder streams to Thruscross Reservoir. The study examined short term changes in total coliform and Escherichia coli concentrations during five diurnal phases and 11 hydrograph events. Statistical analysis of the results show that highly significant increases in enteric bacterial concentrations occurred in nine of the 11 hydrograph events examined. The results suggest that a flushing mechanism may operate in the transport of enteric bacteria into upland reservoirs.  相似文献

An investigation of the tidal factors controlling the abundance and distribution of coliform bacteria in the sediments of two intertidal sites in the River Mersey (U.K.) was made during 1976. Samples were collected, at approximately weekly intervals, from September to December. Counts of the total coliform, faecal coliform and E. coli type I, were made in order to relate the numbers of bacteria to the salinity conditions of the tidal waters covering the sites. Correlations were observed between coliform counts, chloride content and tidal heights.  相似文献

The problems of water-colour management in peatland catchments are discussed. Colour may be managed in three areas of the reservoir catchment system: on the catchment itself, in the channel/conduit system and within the reservoir. Whilst a number of workers have considered the management of catchment areas and some have evolved tributary turnout strategies, no previous research has considered the role of the reservoir in the amelioration or enhancement of water colour. The management of water colour at Thornton Moor catchment (near Bradford) is described. In this catchment a staged approach has been adopted, with colour being managed in an integrated manner at three stages along the catchment/conduit/reservoir system.  相似文献

The spatial and temporal distributions of indicator bacteria in a small, multiple-use source drinking water reservoir in Southern California, USA were quantified over the period August 2001-July 2002. High levels of total and fecal coliform bacteria were present in Canyon Lake (annual geometric mean concentrations+/-SEM of 3.93+/-0.02 and 3.02+/-0.03 log cfu/100mL, respectively), while comparatively low levels of enterococci and E. coli were found (1.16+/-0.02 log cfu/100mL and 0.30+/-0.03 log MPN/100mL, respectively). As a result, these different indicator bacteria yielded quite divergent indices of water quality, with 72.1% of all surface samples (n=294) exceeding the USEPA single-sample limit of 400 cfu/100mL fecal coliform bacteria, while none (0%) of the samples exceeded the single-sample limit for E. coli (n=194). Regression analyses found a positive correlation between total and fecal coliform bacteria (R=0.50, significant at p<0.001) and between enterococci and E. coli (R=0.51, significant at p<0.001), but no correlation or inverse correlations were found between coliform concentrations and enterococci and E. coli levels. External sources responsible for the high total and fecal coliform bacteria were not identified, although laboratory studies demonstrated growth of the coliform bacteria in lake water samples. Enterococci and E. coli were not observed to grow, however. Bacteria concentrations varied relatively little laterally across the lake, although strong vertical gradients in fecal coliform and enterococcus bacteria concentrations were present during summer stratification, with concentrations about 10x higher above the thermocline when compared with surface concentrations. In contrast, total bacteria, total virus and total coliform bacteria levels were unchanged with depth. Seasonal trends in bacteria concentrations were also present. This study shows that the choice of indicator bacteria and sampling depth can both strongly affect the apparent microbial water quality of a lake or reservoir.  相似文献

The paper describes a modelling study of near-shore coastal waters, undertaken to assess the impact of various bacterial input loads on the receiving waters in a coastal basin in the UK. Total and faecal coliforms, used as the indicators for bathing water quality under the European Union (EU) Bathing Water Directive, were numerically modelled using a 2D depth integrated hydro-environmental model. Details are given of the governing equations and solution methods used in the numerical model, together with a discussion of the recent development in faecal bacterial indicator modelling. Details are also given of a field data collection exercise, which involved initially collecting existing information on effluent input loads and followed by an intensive field survey. Using the water quality model, the mortality rate of the pathogen bacteria was investigated. Three methods were used to represent the relationship between the decay rate and the level of solar radiation including: a constant decay rate, day- and night-time decay rates and a solar radiation related time varying decay rate. Relatively close agreement between model predicted and measured total and faecal coliform concentration distributions were obtained for different day- and night-time decay rates and time varying decay rates. No significant differences were found in the optimum decay rates for total and faecal coliform levels. Finally, the impact of the individual inputs on the bathing water quality of the basin was also statistically and numerically investigated. Results showed that the River Irvine was the most significant input during high river flows, and that under these conditions the bathing waters were likely to fail to comply with the European Union Bathing Water Directive. For base river flow conditions the Meadowhead effluent input was found to be critical for both total and faecal coliform level predictions.  相似文献

This paper explores ways in which the analysis of microbial data from routine compliance monitoring, in combination with basic environmental data, can provide insight into the factors affecting faecal-indicator organism concentrations in coastal waters. In the case study presented, eight designated bathing waters on the Fylde coast are continuing to exhibit unreliable compliance with the Imperative standards for total coliform (TC) and faecal coliform (FC) concentrations specified in the EU Bathing Water Directive (76/160/EEC), despite significant reductions in geometric mean concentrations following recent major investment in the sewerage infrastructure. Faecal streptococci (FS) concentrations have remained high and have not been improved by the new sewerage schemes. The results suggest that, prior to the schemes, higher bacterial concentrations were strongly associated with rainfall; and sewage sources were important for TC and FC, but less important for FS, which may have been more strongly affected by diffuse catchment sources. In the post-schemes period, catchment sources appear to be of greater significance; rainfall remains as a significant, though less important, predictor; and tide height at time of sampling, together with variables such as sunshine and the proportion of onshore winds (which affect the survival and movement of bacteria that have already entered the coastal waters), assume greater significance. The approach used here provides a cost-effective management tool for the exploratory investigation of any monitoring point that is failing to meet recreational water quality standards.  相似文献

Faecal coliform deposition rates with estuary type suspended solids have been examined in laboratory experiments. Faecal coliform deposition rates in estuary water increased proportionately with suspended solids concentration, whereas faecal coliform deposition rates in effluent/seawater mixture showed no correlation with suspended solids concentration.

Deposition of estuary water suspended solids showed correlation with time, whereas deposition of effluent suspended solids showed no correlation with time. The adsorption efficiency experiments suggested immediate adsorption of some of the faecal coliforms onto both types of suspended solids and no difference in adsorption potential.

Therefore, it appears that the contrasting effects on faecal coliform deposition can be attributed to the different deposition potential of each type of suspended solids and not to the adsorption process.  相似文献

A study of two major environmental issues in upland water management is presented. Discolouration and reservoir sedimentation are seen to affect water managers on different timescales and to different degrees. Rates of reservoir sedimentation, adjusted for empirically derived trap efficiency, are measured and found to be higher than previously believed. A link between sediments found within the reservoir basin and the generation of colour is described.  相似文献

Dynamic modelling was used to quantify the impact of projected climate change, and potential changes in population and land use, on phosphorus (P) export from a sub-catchment in SW Ireland using the Generalised Watershed Loading Functions (GWLF) model. Overall the results indicated that the increase in annual total phosphorus loads attributable to climate change was greater than that from either population or land use change, and therefore that future climate variability will pose an increasingly significant threat to the successful long-term implementation of catchment management initiatives. The seasonal pattern in projected P export mirrored changes in streamflow, with higher rates between January and April and lower rates in summer. The potential reduction in export in summer was, however, negated when increases in population were included in simulations. A change in the slurry spreading period from that stipulated in national regulations to the months between April and September could potentially mitigate against future increases in dissolved P export in spring. The results indicate that projected changes in climate should be included when undertaking modelling exercises in support of decision making for catchment management plans.  相似文献

Terrestrial liming experiments have been carried out in the Welsh uplands at Llyn Brianne, 30 km northwest of Brecon. Limestone has been applied to an entire moorland catchment and to the hydrological source areas of a moorland catchment. The hydrological source areas were derived from topographic data. Blanket liming and source area liming proved successful in (a) raising the pH value of the stream, (b) increasing the calcium concentration, and (c) decreasing the aluminium concentration. The response to the source area liming proved to be more successful, resulting in a higher calcium concentration. Neither site showed any signs of long-term exhaustion, although the initial response in stream chemistry indicated the importance of the soil exchange complex in determining optimum application rates. Source area liming has economic and environmental advantages over blanket liming, and its increased effectiveness suggests that it is the most viable technique for ameliorating acidification in upland areas.  相似文献
