The year 2010 is already here, and the IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS) is expecting a busy year for standards!     

Standards in the Color Books [Standards]

Well, the November/December issue of the magazine seems to be a Color Books update issue, since I provided a similar update called "What's Happening to the Color Books?" last year. That's OK. Because it gives me an opportunity to keep you informed about one of the most significant changes in IAS Standards development in several decades.

Standards, patents, and intellectual property [Standards]

The IEEE standards-making process is organized through the IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA) and the IEEE-SA Standards Board. Because standards have legal implications, there are rules and guidelines that we are obliged to follow in the process of standards development.     

International Standards 101

This is an introduction to international standards and describes two global organizations, CIGRE and IEC. CIGRE is important to the manufacturers of electrical power equipment and electrical utilities. It often carries out the preliminary work needed for high-voltage international standards prepared by the IEC. IEC prepares standards on all aspects of electrical equipment and electronics.

The Standards Department and Its Relationships to the IEEE Standards Process

THE PROCESS of developing voluntary electrical standards is one of the outstanding activities of the IEEE Industry Applications Society. The resulting IEEE standards give long-lasting and widespread benefits to Society members, and this is perhaps most evident in the Society's ``Color Book' series. The Society standards activity also provides a significant service to other members of the IEEE. For instance, ten percent of all income from IEEE standards document sales in recent years has come from IAS standards [1]. This income production is ahead of the collective standards produced by any other IEEE society. (IEEE standards document sales in 1984 alone totalled $1.8 million.) As described in the IEEE Standards Manual [2], an IEEE standard represents a consensus of all interests concerned with the scope of the standard, provides a common ground for communication among those using the standard, and gives an authoritative reference to the state of technology. Each existing IEEE standard must be kept up to date by means of mandatory review at least every five years. The IEEE is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), and IEEE standards are routinely submitted to ANSI for adoption as American National Standards.

Standards for Commutating Capacitors

Problems of standardization exist for capacitors used in power semiconductor equipment. Electronic Industries Association (EIA) has taken a step forward in this area by publishing an industry standard for commutating capacitors. Details of definitions, case types, terminals, ratings, measurements, life tests, performance characteristics, and general applications of these capacitors are covered in the proposed standard. This paper describes part of the EIA program and also includes limited information on the design of commutating capacitors and their use in power semiconductor circuits.
