The long-chain n-3 fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), play a crucial role in health, but previous National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) analyses have shown that EPA and DHA intake in the United States is far below recommendations (~250–500 mg/day EPA + DHA). Less is known about docosapentaenoic acid (DPA), the metabolic intermediate of EPA and DHA; however, evidence suggests DPA may be an important contributor to long-chain n-3 fatty acid intake and impart unique benefits. We used NHANES 2003–2014 data (n = 45,347) to assess DPA intake and plasma concentrations, as well as the relationship between intake and plasma concentrations of EPA, DPA, and DHA. Mean DPA intake was 22.3 ± 0.8 mg/day from 2013 to 2014, and increased significantly over time (p < 0.001), with the lowest values from 2003 to 2004 (16.2 ± 1.2 mg/day). DPA intake was higher in adults (20–55 years) and seniors (55+ years) compared to younger individuals. In regression analyses, DPA intake was a significant predictor of plasma EPA (β = 138.5; p < 0.001) and DHA (β = 318.9; p < 0.001). Plasma DPA was predicted by EPA and DHA intake (β = 13.15; p = 0.001 and β = 7.4; p = 0.002), but not dietary DPA (p = 0.3). This indicates that DPA intake is not a good marker of plasma DPA status (or vice versa), and further research is needed to understand the factors that affect the interconversion of EPA and DPA. Background – Since n‐3 fatty acids, abundant in fatty fish, may improve health, we raised the question whether self‐reported intake frequency of fatty fish (FF) might be related to the percentage of n‐3 fatty acids in serum phospholipids (PL‐n‐3), and also to self‐rated health (H). Design – The study followed a cross‐sectional design. Methods – In the cross‐sectional Oslo Health Study, PL‐n‐3 were determined in 121 middle‐aged ethnic Norwegians and 102 immigrants from the Indian subcontinent and correlated with FF and H. Logistic regression was used to study the relationship between PL‐n‐3 and H (dichotomized, i.e. Poor vs. Good health). Results – FF correlated positively with PL20:5n‐3 (PL‐EPA, r = 0.467, p <0.001) and PL22:6n‐3 (PL‐DHA, r = 0.499, p <0.001), and negatively with PL20:4n‐6 (PL‐AA, r = –0.350, p = 0.001). H was positively associated with PL‐EPA (r = 0.321, p <0.001) and PL‐DHA (r = 0.275; p <0.001), but negatively with PL‐AA (r = –0.220, p = 0.001). The odds ratio for reporting Poor vs. Good health was significantly higher in subjects with low levels of PL‐EPA (OR = 1.49; 95% confidence interval = 1.17–1.89, p = 0.001), persisting after adjusting for sex, physical activity, ethnicity and length of education. Conclusion – The intake frequency of fatty fish is related to n‐3 fatty acids in the serum phospholipids, and to self‐rated health. 相似文献

A blood biomarker of omega-3 fatty acid intake and tissue status could serve as a modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular
disease. The percentage of omega-3 highly unsaturated fatty acid (HUFA ≥ 20 carbons and ≥3 double bonds) in the total HUFA
pool (the n-3 HUFA score) was examined as a potential blood biomarker of omega-3 fatty acids in tissues. The fatty acid composition
of total lipid extracts (TLE) and phospholipid (PL) fractions were determined for plasma and erythrocytes samples of human
subjects (n = 20) and the n-3 HUFA score and the sum of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) were compared. Omega-3
fatty acids in blood and tissues of rats (n = 31) and pigs (n = 48) were also determined and the associations were compared. The n-3 HUFA score is more consistent across plasma and erythrocytes,
with strong correlations between TLE and PL in plasma (r = 0.93) and erythrocytes (r = 0.94). The n-3 HUFA score was less variable and blood levels correlated strongly with various animal tissues. The n-3 HUFA
score is a useful blood biomarker that does not require the isolation of the PL class thereby supporting high throughput analyses.
The strength of association between the n-3 HUFA score and disease risk needs to be examined. 相似文献

Young adult females have higher blood docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), 22:6n-3 levels than males, and this is believed to be due to higher DHA synthesis rates, although DHA may also accumulate due to a longer half-life or a combination of both. However, sex differences in blood fatty acid responses to eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), 20:5n-3 or DHA supplementation have not been fully investigated. In this exploratory analysis, females and males (n = 14–15 per group) were supplemented with 3 g/day EPA, 3 g/day DHA, or olive oil control for 12 weeks. Plasma was analyzed for sex effects at baseline and changes following 12 weeks' supplementation for fatty acid levels and carbon-13 signature (δ13C). Following EPA supplementation, the increase in plasma DHA in females (+23.8 ± 11.8, nmol/mL ± SEM) was higher than males (−13.8 ± 9.2, p < 0.01). The increase in plasma δ13C-DHA of females (+2.79 ± 0.31, milliUrey (mUr ± SEM) compared with males (+1.88 ± 0.44) did not reach statistical significance (p = 0.10). The sex effect appears driven largely by increased plasma DHA in the AA genotype of females (+58.8 ± 11.5, nmol/mL ± SEM, n = 5) compared to GA + GG in females (+4.34 ± 13.5, n = 9) and AA in males (−29.1 ± 17.2, n = 6) for rs953413 in the ELOVL2 gene (p < 0.001). In conclusion, EPA supplementation increases plasma DHA levels in females compared to males, which may be dependent on the AA genotype for rs953413 in ELOVL2. 相似文献

Population-based data suggest that individuals who consume large dietary amounts of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) have lower odds of peripheral artery disease (PAD); however, clinical studies examining n-3 PUFA levels in patients with PAD are sparse. The objective of this study is to compare erythrocyte membrane fatty acid (FA) content between patients with PAD and controls. We conducted a cross-sectional study of 179 vascular surgery outpatients (controls, 34; PAD, 145). A blood sample was drawn and the erythrocyte FA content was assayed using capillary gas chromatography. We calculated the ratio of the n-3 PUFA eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) to the n-6 PUFA arachidonic acid (ARA) as well as the omega-3 index (O3I), a measure of erythrocyte content of the n-3 PUFA, EPA, and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), expressed as a percentage of total erythrocyte FA. Compared with controls, patients with PAD smoked more and were more likely to have hypertension and hyperlipidemia (p < 0.05). Patients with PAD had a lower mean O3I (5.0 ± 1.7% vs 6.0 ± 1.6%, p < 0.001) and EPA:ARA ratio (0.04 ± 0.02 vs 0.05 ± 0.05, p < 0.001), but greater mean total saturated fats (39.5 ± 2.5% vs 38.5 ± 2.6%, p = 0.01). After adjusting for several patient characteristics, comorbidities, and medications, an absolute decrease of 1% in the O3I was associated with 39% greater odds of PAD (odds ratio [OR] 1.39, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.03–1.86, and p = 0.03). PAD was associated with a deficiency of erythrocyte n-3 PUFA, a lower EPA:ARA ratio, and greater mean total saturated fats. The aim of this study was to determine whether eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) or docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), or both, were responsible
for the triglyceride (TG)-lowering effects of fish oil. EPA (91% pure) and DHA (83% pure), a fish oil concentrate (FOC; 41%
EPA and 23% DHA) and an olive oil (OO) placebo (all ethyl esters) were tested. A total of 49 normolipidemic subjects participated.
Each subject was given placebo for 2–3 wk and one of the n-3 supplements for 3 wk in randomized, blinded trials. The target
n-3 fatty acid (FA) intake was 3 g/day in all studies. Blood samples were drawn twice at the end of each supplementation phase
and analyzed for lipids, lipoproteins, and phospholipid FA composition. In all groups, the phospholipid FA composition changed
to reflect the n-3 FA given. On DHA supplementation, EPA levels increased to a small but significant extent, suggesting that
some retroconversion may have occurred. EPA supplementation did not raise DHA levels, however, FOC and EPA produced significant
decreases in both TG and very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol (C) levels (P<0.01) and increases in low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels (P<0.05). DHA supplementation did not affect cholesterol, triglyceride, VLDL, LDL, or high density lipoprotein (HDL) levels,
but it did cause a significant increase in the HDL2/HDL3 cholesterol ratio. We conclude that EPA appears to be primarily responsible for TG-lowering (and LDL-C raising) effects of

Erythrocyte membrane fatty acid (EMFA) composition is used in the validation of food frequency questionnaires (FFQ) and the evaluation of dietary fat quality. In this cross-sectional study we aimed to investigate associations of diet with EMFA. Altogether, 1,033 randomly selected Finnish men, aged from 47 to 75 years filled in a FFQ and their EMFA composition was analyzed. Marine polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) intake correlated positively with erythrocyte eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids (r s = 0.415 and r s = 0.340, respectively, P < 0.001) and inversely with all n-6 PUFA analyzed (P < 0.001). PUFA intake from spreads and cooking fats correlated positively with alpha-linolenic (ALA), linoleic (LNA) and nervonic acids (r s = 0.229, r s = 0.160 and r s = 0.143, respectively, P < 0.001). Milk fat intake was associated with myristic and behenic acids (r s = 0.186 and r s = 0.132, respectively P < 0.001). Butter users had lower ALA and LNA proportions (mol%) than non-users (0.16 ± 0.04 vs. 0.19 ± 0.05, P < 0.001 and 7.77 ± 1.02 vs. 8.12 ± 1.11, P = 0.001). Higher PUFA intake from meat was related to decreased long-chain n-3 (P < 0.001) and increased n-6 PUFA (P < 0.001) proportions. In conclusion, EMFA composition reflects particularly well the intakes of n-3 PUFA, whereas other associations remained lower. Yet, all main sources of dietary fat were related with EMFA. The dietary effect on the nervonic acid proportion was confirmed. 相似文献

Intake of fish and omega-3 (n-3) fatty acids is associated with a reduced concentration of plasma triacylglycerols (TAG) but
the mechanisms are not fully clarified. Stearoyl-CoA desaturase-1 (SCD1) activity, governing TAG synthesis, is affected by
n-3 fatty acids. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) display expression of genes involved in lipid metabolism. The aim
of the present study was to estimate whether intake of lean and fatty fish would influence n-3 fatty acids composition in
plasma phospholipids (PL), serum TAG, 18:1n-9/18:0 ratio in plasma PL, as well as PBMC gene expression of SCD1 and fatty acid
synthase (FAS). Healthy males and females (n = 30), aged 20–40, consumed either 150 g of cod, salmon, or potato (control) daily for 15 days. During intervention docosahexaenoic
acid (DHA, 22:6n-3) increased in the cod group (P < 0.05), while TAG concentration decreased (P < 0.05). In the salmon group both eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3) and DHA increased (P < 0.05) whereas TAG concentration and the 18:1n-9/18:0 ratio decreased (P < 0.05). Reduction of the 18:1n-9/18:0 ratio was associated with a corresponding lowering of TAG (P < 0.05) and an increase in EPA and DHA (P < 0.05). The mRNA levels of SCD1 and FAS in PBMC were not significantly altered after intake of cod or salmon when compared
with the control group. In conclusion, both lean and fatty fish may lower TAG, possibly by reducing the 18:1n-9/18:0 ratio
related to allosteric inhibition of SCD1 activity, rather than by influencing the synthesis of enzyme protein. 相似文献

Fourteen healthy volunteers were randomly allocated to receive 4 g highly purified ethyl esters of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)
(95% pure, n=7) or docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) (90% pure, n=7) daily for 5 wk in supplement to their ordinary diet. The n−3 fatty acids were given with a standard high-fat meal at the
beginning and the end of the supplementation period. EPA and DHA induced a similar incorporation into chylomicrons which peaked
6 h after the meal. The relative uptake of EPA and DHA from the meal was >90% compared with the uptake of oleic acid. During
absorption, there was no significant elongation or retroconversion of EPA or DHA in total chylomicron fatty acids. The concentration
of EPA decreased by 13% and DHA by 62% (P<0.001) between 6 and 8 h after the meal. During the 5-wk supplementation period, EPA showed a more rapid and comprehensive
increase in serum phospholipids than did DHA. DHA was retroconverted to EPA, whereas EPA was elongated to docosapentaenoic
acid (DPA). The postprandial triglyceridemia was suppressed by 19 and 49% after prolonged intake of EPA and DHA, respectively,
indicating that prolonged intake of DHA is equivalent to or even more efficient than that of EPA in lowering postprandial
triglyceridemia. This study indicates that there are metabolic differences between EPA and DHA which may have implications
for the use of n−3 fatty acids in preventive and clinical medicine. 相似文献

n−3 FA are beneficial for cardiovascular health, reducing platelet aggregation, TG levels, and the risk of sudden death from
myocardial infarction. The percentage of EPA + DHA in red blood cells (RBC), also known as the Omega-3 Index, has recently
been proposed as a risk marker for death from coronary heart disease (CHD). The purpose of this study was to begin to explore
the factors that can influence RBC EPA + DHA. We collected information on the number of servings of tuna or nonfried fish
consumed per month, as well as on age, gender, ethnicity, smoking status, the presence of diabetes, and body mass index (BMI)
in 163 adults in Kansas City who were not taking fish oil supplements. The average RBC EPA + DHA in this population was 4.9±2.1%.
On a multivariate analysis, four factors significantly and independently influenced the Omega-3 Index: fish servings, age,
BMI, and diabetes. The Index increased by 0.24 units with each additional monthly serving of tuna or nonfried fish (P<0.0001), and by 0.5 units for each additional decade in age (P<0.0001). The Index was 1.13% units lower in subjects with diabetes (P=0.015) and decreased by 0.3% units with each 3-unit increase in BMI (P=0.001). Gender or smoking status had no effect, and the univariate relationship with ethnicity vanished after controlling
for deathfrom CHD, further studies are warranted to delineate the nondietary factors that influence RBC EPA + DHA content. 相似文献

Fish are a rich source of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), two long-chain polyunsaturated n-3 fatty
acids (LC n-3 PUFA) with cardiovascular benefits. A related but less-investigated LC n-3 PUFA, docosapentaenoic acid (DPA),
is more common in seal oil and pasture-fed red meats. This study compared indicators of platelet function and plasma lipids
in healthy volunteers given supplements containing these different fatty acids (FA) for 14 days. Subjects, randomised into
three groups of ten, consumed capsules of tuna oil (210 mg EPA, 30 mg DPA, 810 mg DHA), seal oil (340 mg EPA, 230 mg DPA,
450 mg DHA) or placebo (sunola) oil. Supplementary LC n-3 PUFA levels were approximately 1 g/day in both fish and seal oil
groups. Baseline dietary FA and other nutrient intakes were similar in all groups. Both fish and seal oil elevated platelet
DHA levels (P < 0.01). Seal oil also raised platelet DPA and EPA levels (P < 0.01), and decreased p-selectin (P = 0.01), a platelet activation marker negatively associated with DPA (P = 0.03) and EPA (P < 0.01) but not DHA. Plasma triacylglycerol decreased (P = 0.03) and HDL-cholesterol levels increased (P = 0.01) with seal oil only. Hence, seal oil may be more efficient than fish oil at promoting healthy plasma lipid profiles
and lowering thrombotic risk, possibly due to its high DPA as well as EPA content. 相似文献

Oil from the marine copepod, Calanus finmarchicus, which contains >86 % of fatty acids present as wax esters, is a novel source of n‐3 fatty acids for human consumption. In a randomized, two‐period crossover study, 18 healthy adults consumed 8 capsules providing 4 g of Calanus® Oil supplying a total of 260 mg EPA and 156 mg DHA primarily as wax esters, or 1 capsule of Lovaza® providing 465 mg EPA and 375 mg DHA as ethyl esters, each with an EPA‐ and DHA‐free breakfast. Plasma EPA and DHA were measured over a 72 h period (t = 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 24, 48, and 72 h). The positive incremental area under the curve over the 72 h test period (iAUC0‐72 h) for both EPA and DHA was significantly different from zero (p < 0.0001) in both test conditions, with similar findings for the iAUC0–24 h and iAUC0–48 h, indicating the fatty acids were absorbed. There was no difference in the plasma iAUC0–72 h for EPA + DHA, or DHA individually, in response to Calanus Oil vs the ethyl ester condition; however, the iAUC0–48 h and iAUC0–72 h for plasma EPA in response to Calanus Oil were both significantly increased relative to the ethyl ester condition (iAUC0–48 h: 381 ± 31 vs 259 ± 39 μg*h/mL, p = 0.026; iAUC0‐72 h: 514 ± 47 vs 313 ± 49 μg*h/mL, p = 0.009). These data demonstrate a novel wax ester rich marine oil is a suitable alternative source of EPA and DHA for human consumption. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine whether dietary n-3 and n-6 PUFA may affect retinal PUFA composition and PGE1 and PGE2 production. Male Wistar rats were fed for 3 months with diets containing: (1) 10% eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and 7% docosahexaenoic
acid (DHA), or (2) 10% γ-linolenic acid (GLA), or (3) 10% EPA, 7% DHA and 10% GLA, or (4) a balanced diet deprived of EPA,
DHA, and GLA. The fatty acid composition of retinal phospholipids was determined by gas chromatography. Prostaglandin production
was measured by enzyme immunoassay. When compared to rats fed the control diet, the retinal levels of DHA were increased in
rats fed both diets enriched with n-3 PUFA (EPA + DHA and EPA + DHA + GLA diets) and decreased in those supplemented with
n-6 PUFA only (GLA diet). The diet enriched with both n-6 and n-3 PUFA resulted in the greatest increase in retinal DHA. The
levels of PGE1 and PGE2 were significantly increased in retinal homogenates of rats fed with the GLA-rich diet when compared with those of animals
fed the control diet. These higher PGE1 and PGE2 levels were not observed in animals fed with EPA + DHA + GLA. In summary, GLA added to EPA + DHA resulted in the highest
retinal DHA content but without increasing retinal PGE2 as seen in animals supplemented with GLA only. 相似文献

The effects of n-3 fatty acid supplementation in the form of fresh fish, fish oil, and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) oil on the
fatty acid composition of plasma lipid fractions, and platelets and erythrocyte membranes of young healthy male students were
examined. Altogether 59 subjects (aged 19–32 yr, body mass index 16.8–31.3 kg/m2) were randomized into the following diet groups: (i) control group; (ii) fish diet group eating fish meals five times per
week [0.38±0.04 g eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and 0.67±0.09 g DHA per day]; (iii) DHA oil group taking algae-derived DHA oil
capsules (1.68 g/d DHA oil group taking algae-derived DHA oil capsules (1.68 g/d DHA in triglyceride form); and (iv) fish
oil group (1.33 g EPA and 0.95 g DHA/d as free fatty acids) for 14 wk. The fatty acid composition of plasma lipids, platelets,
and erythrocyte membranes was analyzed by gas chromatography. The subjects kept 4-d food records four times during the study
to estimate the intake of nutrients. In the fish diet, in DHA oil, and in fish oil groups, the amounts of n-3 fatty acids
increased and those of n-6 fatty acids decreased significantly in plasma lipid fractions and in platelets and erythrocyte
membranes. A positive relationship was shown between the total n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and EPA and DHA intake
and the increase in total n-3 PUFA and EPA and DHA in all lipid fractions analyzed. DHA was preferentially incorporated into
phospholipid (PL) and triglyceride (TG) and there was very little uptake in cholesterol ester (CE), while EPA was preferentially
incorporated into PL and CE. The proportion of EPA in plasma lipids and platelets and erythrocyte membranes increased also
by DHA supplementation, and the proportion of linoleic acid increased in platelets and erythrocyte membranes in the DHA oil
group as well. These results suggest retroconversion of DHA to EPA and that DHA also interferes with linoleic acid metabolism. 相似文献

n-3 Polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA) from the marine microalgaIsochrysis galbana were concentrated and purified by a two-step process—formation of urea inclusion compounds followed by preparative high-performance
liquid chromatography. These methods had been developed previously with fatty acids from cod liver oil. By the urea inclusion
compounds method, a mixture that contained 94% (w/w) stearidonic (SA), eicosapentaenoic (EPA), plus docosahexaenoic (DHA)
acids (4:1 urea/fatty acid ratio and 4°C crystallization final temperature) was obtained from cod liver oil fatty acids. Further
purification of SA, EPA, and DHA was achieved with reverse-phase C18 columns. These isolations were scaled up to a semi-preparative column. A PUFA concentrate was isolated fromI. galbana with methanol/water (80:20, w/w) or ethanol/water (70:30, w/w). With methanol/water, a 96% EPA fraction with 100% yield was
obtained, as well as a 94% pure DHA fraction with a 94% yield. With ethanol/water as the mobile phase, EPA and DHA fractions
obtained were 92% pure with yields of 84 and 88%, respectively. 相似文献

to modulate eicosanoid production. In general, the intake of arachidonic acid (AA) results in enhanced eicosanoid production,
whereas n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) decrease the production of eicosanoids from AA. The purpose of this study was
to investigate whether the effects of dietary AA on eicosanoid production in the rat were correlated with the AA and EPA levels
in platelets and aorta (eicosanoid-producing tissues). Four groups of male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a highfat diet enriched
with eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) (approximately 100 mg/day of EPA+DHA) for 24 d. During the
last 10 d, the four groups were orally supplemented with 0,30,60, and 90 mg/day of ethyl arachidonate. A further group of
rats was fed a control diet (without longchain n-3 PUFA) for 24 d.In vitro aorta prostacyclin (PGI2) production, serum thromboxane A2 (TxA2) production and plasma, and platelet and aorta phospholipid (PL) fatty acids were measured. Enriching the diet with n-3 PUFA
resulted in significant reductions in tissue AA levels and an increase in the n-3 PUFA, particularly EPA. On this diet, the
AA to EPA ratio was 1:1 in platelet PL, and it was 2:1 in the aorta PL. There were significant decreases in thein vitro PGI2 and TxA2 production compared with the control animals. The inclusion of AA in the diet resulted in marked increases in AA levels in
the platelet and aorta PL with corresponding decreases in EPA. The lowest dose of AA (30 mg/rat) reversed the effects of 100
mg/day of n-3 PUFA on AA levels in platelet and aortic PL and onin vitro aorta PGI2 and serum TxA2 production. The dietary AA caused a differential (twofold) increase in TxA2 relative to PGI2 for all three levels of AA supplementation. There were greater changes in the levels of AA and/or EPA in platelet PL compared
with the aorta PL, which might have accounted for the differential effects of these PUFA on thromboxane production compared

Major risk factors for coronary heart disease were assessed in two populations of Tanzania, one on a fish diet (FD) living
along the coast of Lake Nyasa, and the other, mainly on a vegetarian diet (VD), living in a farming area. Lower blood pressure
values were found in the FD subjects (n=618) vs. VD (n=618) (systolic blood pressure, SBP, 120±15 vs. 135±20,P<0.01; diastolic blood pressure, DBP, 70±9 vs. 78±11,P<0.01, respectively). In an FD subgroup (n=61), total cholesterol (TC) (122 vs. 136 mg/dL,P<0.01); triglycerides (TG) (82 vs. 105 mg/dL,P<0.01); and lipoprotein (a) [Lp(a)] (19.9±18.4 vs. 32.3±22.4,P<0.001) were lower than in a VD subgroup (n=55). Serum fatty acids (FA) in the FD subgroup were as follows: eicosapentaenoic
acid (EPA) (20∶5) 2.48 vs. 0.72%, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) (22∶6) 5.93 vs. 1.49%, vs. the VD, respectively. Arachidonic
acid (AA) (20∶4n-6) also was higher in the FD vs. the VD group (9.85 vs. 8.30%,P<0.05), whereas 18∶2n-6 was about double (23.97 and 14.85%) in VD vs. FD. The peculiar serum FA pattern in FD reflected the
FA of dietary fish. In fact, in four main species of lake fish, DHA was 8–19%, higher than EPA (1.8–4.2%), in contrast with
the situation in cold-water fish, and AA was 5.8–8%, higher than in cold-water fish. The data, obtained in populations strictly
on natural, unprocessed, low-fat diets, show that a diet based on freshwater fish results in lower BP, serum TC, TG, and Lp(a),
and suggests that serum AA is not reduced when the major dietary n-3 is DHA rather than EPA. 相似文献

Polar lipids (PoL) represent a new promising dietary approach in the prevention and treatment of many human diseases, due to their potential nutritional value and unique biophysical properties. This study investigates the effects of catching season and oven baking on the fatty acid profiles (FAP) of PoL in four species of blue-back fish widely present in the North Adriatic Sea: anchovy (Engraulis encrasicholus), sardine (Sardina pilchardus), sprat (Sprattus sprattus), and horse mackerel (Trachurus trachurus). PoL levels (427–652 mg/100 g flesh) varied among the four species, with no significant seasonal variations within species. FAP of raw fillets were particularly high in polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA), especially docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and EPA; total PUFA was constant in all species throughout the year, while long-chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (n-3 PUFA) rose in spring (except in sprat), especially due to the contribution of DHA. The FAP response for PoL to oven baking was species-specific and, among n-3 PUFA, DHA exhibited the greatest heat resistance; the influence of oven baking on FAP was found to be correlated with the catching season, especially for anchovy and sardine, while sprat PoL were not affected by cooking processes. The four species analyzed in this study presented very low n-6/n-3 fatty acid ratios and highly favorable nutritional indices, emphasizing their PoL qualities and promoting their role in increasing human n-3 PUFA intake. The four species can be considered as superior sources of n-3 PUFA and can be employed as supplements in functional food manufacturing and in pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. 相似文献

We studied the fatty acid (FA) content and composition of ten zoobenthic species of several taxonomic groups from different
freshwater bodies. Special attention was paid to essential polyunsaturated fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3),
docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3), and arachidonic acid (ARA, 20:4n-6); and the n-3/n-6 and DHA/ARA ratios, which are important
for consumers of higher trophic levels, i.e., fish. The content and ratios of these FA varied significantly in the studied
zoobenthic species, consequently, the invertebrates were of different nutritional quality for fish. Eulimnogammarus viridis (Crustacea) and Dendrocoelopsis sp. (Turbellaria) had the highest nutrition value for fish concerning the content of EPA and DHA and n-3/n-6 and DHA/ARA
ratios. Using canonical correspondence analysis we compared the FA profiles of species of the studied taxa taking into account
their feeding strategies and habitats. We gained evidence that feeding strategy is of importance to determine fatty acid profiles
of zoobenthic species. However, the phylogenetic position of the zoobenthic species is also responsible and may result in
a similar fatty acid composition even if species or populations inhabit different water bodies or have different feeding strategies. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate in healthy humans the effect of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic
acid (DHA) intake, alone or in combination with dL-α-tocopherol acetate (vitamin E) supplements on lipid peroxidation. Eightly
men were randomly assigned in a double-blind fashion to take daily for 6 wk either menhaden oil (6.26 g, n−3 fatty acids)
or olive oil supplements with either vitamin E (900 IU) or its placebo. Antioxidant vitamins, phospholipid composition, malondialdehyde
(MDA), and lipid peroxides were measured in the plasma at baseline and week 6. At the same time, breath alkane output was
measured. Plasma α-tocopherol concentration increased in those receiving vitamin E (P<0.0001). In those supplemented with n−3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA increased in plasma phospholipids (P<0.0001) and plasma MDA and lipid peroxides increased (P<0.001 and P<0.05, respectively). Breath alkane output did not change significantly and vitamin E intake did not prevent the increase
in lipid peroxidation during menhaden oil supplementation. The results demonstrate that supplementing the diet with n−3 fatty
acids resulted in an increase in lipid peroxidation, as measured by plasma MDA release and lipid peroxide products, which
was not suppressed by vitamin E supplementation. 相似文献
