Harry C. Triandis has been instrumental in establishing cross-cultural psychology as a distinct discipline within psychology. His accomplishments in this international component of the field have included major theoretical and methodological innovations as well as educational and leadership contributions. The six-volume Handbook of Cross-Cultural Psychology, published in 1980 under his general editorship, is widely considered an important milestone in the development of the discipline and is a testament to his stature in the field and to his unique abilities to integrate divergent perspectives from around the world. In more recent years Harry Triandis has focused on the study of cultural syndromes like individualism and collectivism. This article discusses Harry C. Triandis's life and his dedication to the field of psychology. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Editorial.
This issue begins with an invited paper by Ronald Melzack, continuing the "Distinguished Contribution Series" begun in 1990 by my predecessor, Gordon Winocur. Professor Melzack is known world-wide for his research on pain. In 1965, together with Patrick Wall, he proposed the gate control theory, an entirely new conception of pain. For the first time, there was an explicit physiological model emphasizing the role played by the brain as well as by the spinal cord, leading to a new integration of psychological and physiological contributions to pain, as well as to new avenues for the control of pain. This theory has been highly influential, as a quick look in virtually any textbook in biology or medicine will confirm. Professor Melzack's continuing development of his ideas is presented with remarkable clarity in his books and in his many journal articles. It is, therefore, especially exciting for CJEP to be the first to publish a sketch of his new neuromatrix theory. When the book developing this theory is published, it too will no doubt have an immediate and major impact. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Comments on an article by Hans J. Eysenck (1954). The author providing these comments states that if he had an "erroneous impression" of Eysenck's main conclusions, it is his further impression that he was not alone in this reaction to his paper. He states that the implicit tone as well as the explicit statement work together in the process of communication. Furthermore, the commentator states that it is good to see that Eysenck has troubled to correct the false impression his paper created. Lastly, the commentator states that it is particularly gratifying that he reiterates the subjective basis of the judgments he found it necessary to make in summarizing the literature. Jung's use of Kabbalistic symbols and ideas as well as his personal Kabbalistic vision are critically examined. It is argued that as great as Jung's acknowledged affinity is to the Kabbalah, his unacknowledged relationship was even greater. Jung has been accused of being a contemporary Gnostic; however, the interpretations Jung placed on Gnosticism and the texts Jung referred to on alchemy were profoundly Kabbalistic, so much so that one would be more justified in calling the Jung of the Mysterium Coniunctionis and other late works a Kabbalist in contemporary guise. Although Jung, at least during the 1930s, appears to have had powerful motives that limited his receptivity to Jewish ideas, his highly ambivalent and at times reproachable attitude toward Judaism should not prevent one from appreciating the affinities between Jungian psychology and Jewish mystical thought. K. Warner Schaie is cited for enlarging our conception of developmental psychology to include the entire life span and for outstanding empirical contributions to the study of adult development and aging. As a developmental methodologist, Schaie's creative formulation of cohort-sequential longitudinal designs has inspired a new approach to the study of the dynamics between ontogenetic development and cultural (cohort) change. As a theoretician and researcher, he has made a landmark contribution to our understanding of the conditions that determine and surround the variations in the nature of aging. Along with the citation, a biography is presented for Schaie, as well as a bibliography of his work. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Reports that Richard Lester Solomon is one of the recipients of the 1966 American Psychological Association Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award. His citation reads: "For his incisive and insistent inquiry into fundamental problems of discrimination, of word recognition thresholds, and of conditioning. His studies give us deep insights into the way the nervous system relates the organism to its world. At his side, colleagues and students have learned dignity and persistence, as well as master craftsmanship in research, responding warmly to his quietly contagious enthusiasm. And while he prefers for himself a measured and manageable framework, he has given steady encouragement to others' views and efforts." A personal biography is also included, along with a listing of his scientific writings. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

For the job of combination agent, an objective measure of job performance was correlated with each of 17 other variables in a sample of 346 agents, on whom were also obtained scores on a test of life insurance knowledge and data on life insurance ownership. "The data presented are consistent with the conclusion that the salesman's belief in his product (as measured by his own buying behavior) and his motivation are more important in determining how well he does his job than is product knowledge. Length of service shows no significant relation to job performance." (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

In the past 20 years, much has been written about the death of psychoanalysis and, along with it, its founder, Sigmund Freud. In this article, it is argued that a great deal of what has been erased is Freud's thinking on the importance of memory and the uncovering of repression for the therapeutic process and for mental health. From the beginning of his psychoanalytic writings, Freud was interested in the function that memory played in psychoanalysis, both as theory and as therapeutic technique. Although he continued to develop and revise his theory well into his eighties, Freud never ceased to believe in the utmost significance of uncovering repression for the human psyche. The aim here is to revive what is believed to be some of Freud's most important contributions on the subject of memory and to offer some suggestions as to why these intellectual gems have been neglected in recent years or, when not neglected, divorced from their originator. Social Crisis.
I am bewildered at the fact that the pages of the American Psychologist reflect almost no awareness of the tragic social upheaval which is accompanying the efforts of the American Negro to win his political, economic, and no less important, his psychological integration with the remainder of American society. This crisis will not disappear because we ignore it. It will be resolved one way or another. The Negro has apparently turned his face from acceptance of his unhappy circumstances and is determined to fight for his human and Constitutional rights. I think it is time that we, as a profession, give recognition to what is occurring around us, that we discuss what our role can and should be, and that each of us, in our own communities volunteer our services and our knowledge to work towards a just and peaceful integration of the American Negro into the American society of the twentieth century. Gives a citation to Stanley Schachter "For consistent, coherent, and creative work that has materially advanced our understanding of behavior in social contexts. He has chosen to explore new areas and new problems that promised to be important and applied exceptional experimental ingenuity in making his explorations successful. Bringing to bear on his problems a fine sense of the necessary relation between theory and data, his studies always produced meaningful knowledge. By exploring his ideas in natural setting:; as well as in the laboratory, he kept richness and precision together in his work. The measure of a man's contribution to science is what we have learned as a result of his work. From the work of Stanley Schachter we have gained new knowledge of the social psychological effects of being deviant in a group; of the circumstances under which people seek out others and the basic: nature of group support; of how groups provide the context within which emotions are defined; and even the effects of the social context on psychophysiological effects. He has contributed broadly and deeply." The citation is followed by a biography of Schachter and a list of his scientific publications.
