A time-domain boundary element method (BEM) together with the sub-domain technique is applied to study dynamic interfacial crack problems in two-dimensional (2D), piecewise homogeneous, anisotropic and linear elastic bi-materials. The bi-material system is divided into two homogeneous sub-domains along the interface and the traditional displacement boundary integral equations (BIEs) are applied on the boundary of each sub-domain. The present time-domain BEM uses a quadrature formula for the temporal discretization to approximate the convolution integrals and a collocation method for the spatial discretization. Quadratic quarter-point elements are implemented at the tips of the interface cracks. A displacement extrapolation technique is used to determine the complex dynamic stress intensity factors (SIFs). Numerical examples for computing the complex dynamic SIFs are presented and discussed to demonstrate the accuracy and the efficiency of the present time-domain BEM.  相似文献

Rapid propagation of a matrix crack in a bi-material system is studied with emphasis on the dynamic interaction between the crack and the interface by combining the traditional time-domain displacement boundary element method (BEM) and the non-hypersingular traction BEM. The crack growth is controlled by the fracture criterion based on the maximum circumferential stress, and is modeled by adding new elements to the moving crack tip. Detailed computation is performed for an unbounded bi-material with a crack subjected to incident impact waves and a bounded rectangular bi-material plate under dynamic wedged loading. Numerical results of the crack growth path, speed, dynamic stress intensity factors (DSIFs) and dynamic interface tractions are presented for various material combinations and geometries. The effects of the interface on the crack growth are discussed.  相似文献

The interaction of a crack with perfectly bonded rigid isolated inclusions and clusters of inclusions in a brittle matrix is investigated using numerical simulations. Of particular interest is the role inclusions play on crack paths, stress intensity factors (SIFs) and the energy release rates with potential implications to the fracture behavior of particulate composites. The effects of particle size and eccentricity relative to the initial crack orientation are examined first as a precursor to the study of particle clusters. Simulations are accomplished using a new quasi-static crack-growth prediction tool based on the symmetric-Galerkin boundary element method, a modified quarter-point crack-tip element, the displacement correlation technique for evaluating SIFs, and the maximum principal stress criterion for crack-growth direction prediction. The numerical simulations demonstrate a complex interplay of crack-tip shielding and amplification mechanisms leading to significant toughening of the material.  相似文献

The aims of this paper are twofold. The first is to evaluate the applicability of the formula for the crack kink angle—based on the maximum principle stress criterion—for predicting the interface kink angle in a bimaterial sample undergoing indentation loading. This formula was developed for cracks in homogenous materials but in this paper, it is used to predict the kink angle using the mode mixity at the tip of a crack lying on a bimaterial interface. The second aim is to examine the behaviour of the system, in terms of the crack kink angle and contact radius, for various coating thickness', crack lengths and combinations of properties of the coating and substrate. The system that is analysed consists of a planar bimaterial sample undergoing indentation with a tungsten-carbide spherical indenter. Two-dimensional, axisymmetric models are created to represent the system, with subdomains used for modelling the cracks. In order to determine the applicability of the kink angle formula, the angle predicted is compared to the angle that is directly calculated using boundary element method models that establish the angle of the kink which yields the maximum mechanical energy release rate. The second aim of the paper is achieved by varying the material property combinations and coating thickness of the bimaterial sample and observing the effect on the kink angle of the interface crack and the contact radius. The methodologies employed are initially verified on homogenous samples with known solutions.  相似文献

Deflection of a crack at the bimaterial interface is the initial mechanism required for obtaining enhanced toughness in bimaterial system. In this paper, a criterion is presented to predict the competition between crack deflection and penetration at the interface, using an energy release rate criterion. The finite element methods are used to calculate the strain energy release rates at the crack tip of alumina–metal bimaterial that either deflect or penetrate at the interface as a function of elastic mismatch and length of the deflected or penetrated crack. The effects of the elastic properties of two bonded materials were highlighted in order to evaluate the conditions for the crack deflection by the interface as well as the distance between the crack tip and the interface.  相似文献

Inter-fibre failure under compression transverse to the fibres is studied at micromechanical level. Interfacial fracture mechanics concepts, associated to both the open model and the contact model, are applied. A numerical study is performed using the boundary element method aimed at explaining the origin and evolution of the damage at micromechanical level, considered as fibre-matrix interface cracks. Assuming that the damage starts as small debonds originated by shear stresses at the position where their maximum values are reached, it has been found that the crack shows different morphologies at both tips: an open one and a closed one with a large contact zone. Then the interface crack grows unstably in mixed mode only on the open tip side until this growth changes to stable, once the crack closes at this tip, with the generation of a contact zone.  相似文献

Cracks in stepped and continuously graded material specimens under flexural loading were investigated via finite element analysis. Calculation of mechanical energy release rates and propagation angles with crack-opening displacement correlation and the local symmetry (KII = 0) criterion, respectively, provided results most efficiently and accurately, as compared with compliance and J-integral approaches and other deflection criteria. A routine was developed for automatic crack extension and remeshing, enabling simulation of incremental crack propagation. Effects of gradient profile and crack geometry on crack-tip stresses and crack propagation path are examined, and implications of these for optimal design of graded components against failure by fast fracture are discussed.  相似文献

Numerical analysis of dynamic debonding under anti-plane shear loading   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
We present an efficient numerical scheme specially developed to simulate a wide variety of dynamic debonding problems under anti-plane shear loading conditions. The algorithm is based on an exact spectral representation of the elastodynamic relations between the interface stresses and displacements. It involves an explicit time stepping scheme with, for each time step, the use of FFT to link the spatial and spectral domains, and the computation of a convolution over the past displacement or velocity history. Two versions of the spectral algorithm are presented: in the first one, the elastodynamic response of each half space is investigated separately before the two solutions are linked with the aid of the interface continuity conditions. In the second approach, the interface conditions and the modulus mismatch are combined in a single bimaterial elastodynamic relation. Various problems involving stationary or rapidly moving interfacial cracks are investigated and contrasted with existing analytical results. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

A time-domain boundary element method (BEM) for transient dynamic crack analysis in two-dimensional, homogeneous, anisotropic and linear elastic solids is presented in this paper. Strongly singular displacement boundary integral equations (DBIEs) are applied on the external boundary of the cracked body while hypersingular traction boundary integral equations (TBIEs) are used on the crack-faces. The present time-domain method uses the quadrature formula of Lubich for approximating the convolution integrals and a collocation method for the spatial discretization of the time-domain boundary integral equations. Strongly singular and hypersingular integrals are dealt with by a regularization technique based on a suitable variable change. Discontinuous quadratic quarter-point elements are implemented at the crack-tips to capture the local square-root-behavior of the crack-opening-displacements properly. Numerical examples for computing the dynamic stress intensity factors are presented and discussed to demonstrate the accuracy and the efficiency of the present method.  相似文献

This study presents a novel application of the scaled boundary finite element method (SBFEM) to model dynamic crack propagation problems. Accurate dynamic stress intensity factors are extracted directly from the semi‐analytical solutions of SBFEM. They are then used in the dynamic fracture criteria to determine the crack‐tip position, velocity and propagation direction. A simple, yet flexible remeshing algorithm is used to accommodate crack propagation. Three dynamic crack propagation problems that include mode‐I and mix‐mode fracture are modelled. The results show good agreement with experimental and numerical results available in the literature. It is found that the developed method offers some advantages over conventional FEM in terms of accuracy, efficiency and ease of implementation. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this paper, the dual boundary element method in time domain is developed for three‐dimensional dynamic crack problems. The boundary integral equations for displacement and traction in time domain are presented. By using the displacement equation and traction equation on crack surfaces, the discontinuity displacement on the crack can be determined. The integral equations are solved numerically by a time‐stepping technique with quadratic boundary elements. The dynamic stress intensity factors are calculated from the crack opening displacement. Several examples are presented to demonstrate the accuracy of this method. Copyright © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd  相似文献

Numerical analysis of dynamic debonding under 2D in-plane and 3D loading   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
We present a numerical scheme specially developed for 2D and 3D dynamic debonding problems. The method, referred to as spectral scheme, allows for a precise modeling of stationary and/or spontaneously expanding interfacial cracks of arbitrary shapes and subjected to an arbitrary combination of time- and space-dependent loading conditions. It is based on a spectral representation of the elastodynamic relations existing between the displacement components along the interface plane and the corresponding dynamic stresses. A general stress-based cohesive failure model is introduced to model the spontaneous progressive failure of the interface. The numerical scheme also allows for the introduction of a wide range of contact relations to model the possible interactions between the fracture surfaces. Simple 2D problems are used to investigate the accuracy and stability of the proposed scheme. Then, the spectral method is used in various 2D and 3D interfacial fracture problems, with special emphasis on the issue of the limiting speed for a spontaneously propagating debonding crack in the presence of frictional contact. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

In this article, a piezoelectric hybrid element is presented and optimized by penalty equilibrium approach, and special crack surface element is suggested for exactly implementing the boundary conditions on crack surface. An iteration technique is used to treat one of the electric boundary conditions. Then, a piezoelectric material with crack is numerically studied by the optimized hybrid element method, and the results are compared with the analytical solutions. The stress and the electrical displacement fields with different crack surface conditions are studied, and the influence to those fields arisen by the far field mechanical and electric loading is also studied.  相似文献

An interface element tailored for the virtual crack closure technique (VCCT) was used to study an example of dynamic crack propagation under mixed mode loading. Through this interfacial element approach, VCCT can be implemented into a commercial finite element analysis (FEA) code having user subroutines without interrupting the main code. Further, with the implementation of relevant fracture criteria, this interface element can be used to simulate a wide range of fracture problems by utilizing the enhanced capabilities available by the commercial FEA codes. For illustration, this element has been implemented with the commercial FEA software ABAQUS® through the user defined element (UEL). One example of fast crack propagation at constant speed and under mixed-mode loading was examined by comparison to the other’s numerical results using singular moving elements. No convergence difficulty was encountered for all the cases with different values of crack velocity. Neither singular element, nor the collapsed element was required. Therefore, due to its simplicity, the VCCT interface element as demonstrated could be a potential tool for engineers to practice dynamic fracture analysis in conjunction with commercial FEA codes.  相似文献

A numerical study of the fundamental problem of a pressurized penny-shaped crack at the interface of two dissimilar half spaces is carried out allowing for the possibility of frictionless contact between crack faces. A new, highly accurate axi-symmetric formulation of the boundary element method (BEM) for the solution of elastic contact problems is employed. The correctness and accuracy of available predictions of different kinds for several key characteristics of the solution of this problem are checked. First, comparison of the BEM results for the near-tip contact length shows a very good agreement with some existing predictions. Second, the global solution obtained by BEM is compared with existing asymptotic solutions, obtained with both the open and the frictionless contact models. BEM results show that at the closest neighborhood to the crack tip the global solution of the problem is governed by the first term of the asymptotic solution of the frictionless contact model (up to a distance of the order of a fraction of the near-tip contact length). After a small transition region, in an adjacent surrounding zone whose extent is almost independent of the near-tip contact length, the global solution of the problem is governed by the first term of the asymptotic solution of the open model. As a result of the comparison presented, the regions in which the classical fracture parameters, stress intensity factor (SIF) and energy release rate, can be accurately obtained from the global numerical solution of a crack of this kind have been determined. Third, BEM results and previous estimations show certain discrepancies with a recently published closed form solution of the near-tip contact length and the mode II SIF of the frictionless contact model. A new closed form expression of this mode II SIF, derived from the asymptotic solution of the open model, is proposed in this paper.  相似文献

Bifurcation and trifurcation of a fast running crack under various biaxial loading conditions is investigated numerically. The solution procedure for the 2D model in the framework of linear elastodynamics employs a time-domain boundary element method and allows for arbitrary curvilinear crack propagation. Branching events are controlled by the criterion of a critical mode I stress intensity factor while the propagation direction and growth rate of each branch are determined from the criterion of maximum circumferential stress. Numerical results are compared with experimental findings and are discussed with respect to macroscopic and microscopic aspects of dynamic fracture.  相似文献

In this paper, Voronoi cell finite element method (VCFEM), introduced by Ghosh and coworkers (1993), is applied to describe the matrix-inclusion interfacial debonding for particulate reinforced composites. In proposed VCFEM, the damage initiation is simulated by partly debonding of the interface under the assumption of the critical normal stress law, and gradual matrix-inclusion separations are simulated with an interface remeshing method that a critical interfacial node at the crack tip is replaced by a node pairs along the debonded matrix-inclusion interface and a more pair of nodes are needed to be added on the crack interface near the crack tip in order to better facilitate the free-traction boundary condition and the jumps of solution. The comparison of the results of proposed VCFEM and commercial finite element packages MARC and ABAQUS. Examples have been given for a single inclusion of gradually interfacial debonding and for a complex structure with 20 inclusions to describe the interfacial damage under plane stress conditions. Good agreements are obtained between the VCFEM and the general finite element method. It appears that this method is a more efficient way to deal with the interfacial damage of composite materials. In this paper, automated simulation of multiple crack fatigue propagation for two-dimensional (2D) linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) problems is developed by using boundary element method (BEM). The boundary element method is the displacement discontinuity method with crack-tip elements proposed by the author. Because of an intrinsic feature of the boundary element method, a general growth problem of multiple cracks can be solved in a single-region formulation. In the numerical simulation, for each increment of crack extension, remeshing of existing boundaries is not necessary. Local discretization on the incremental crack extension is performed easily. Further the new adding elements and the existing elements on the existing boundaries are employed to construct easily the total structural mesh representation. Here, the mixed-mode stress intensity factors are calculated by using the formulas based on the displacement fields around crack tip. The maximum circumferential stress theory is used to predict crack stability and direction of propagation at each step. The well-known Paris’ equation is extended to multiple crack case under mixed-mode loadings. Also, the user does not need to provide a desired crack length increment at the beginning of each simulation. The numerical examples are included to illustrate the validation of the numerical approach for fatigue growth simulation of multiple cracks for 2D LEFM problems.  相似文献
