We study external quantum efficiency (ηEQE) roll-off in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) using thermally-activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) of 4,5-di (9H-carbazol-9-yl) phthalonitrile (2CzPN). Using 2CzPN intramolecular rate constants from optical analyses, we construct an exciton quenching model incorporating intersystem crossing and reverse intersystem crossing. The model indicates that singlet–triplet annihilation and triplet–triplet annihilation dominate ηEQE roll-off because of the relatively long 2CzPN triplet lifetime of 273 μs. This work yields a method to relax the exciton quenching process in TADF based OLEDs. 相似文献

Actualizing highly efficient solution‐processed thermally activated delayed fluorescent (TADF) organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs) at high brightness becomes significant to the popularization of purely organic electroluminescence. Herein, a highly soluble emitter benzene‐1,3,5‐triyltris((4‐(9,9‐dimethylacridin‐10(9H)‐yl)phenyl)methanone was developed, yielding high delayed fluorescence rate (kTADF > 105 s?1) ascribed to the multitransition channels and tiny singlet–triplet splitting energy (ΔEST ≈ 32.7 meV). The triplet locally excited state is 0.38 eV above the lowest triplet charge‐transfer state, assuring a solely thermal equilibrium route for reverse intersystem crossing. Condensed state solvation effect unveils a hidden “trade‐off”: the reverse upconversion and triplet concentration quenching processes can be promoted but with a reduced radiative rate from the increased dopant concentration and the more polarized surroundings. Striking a delicate balance, corresponding vacuum‐evaporated and solution‐processed TADF‐OLEDs realized maximum external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) of ≈26% and ≈22% with extremely suppressed efficiency roll‐off. Notably, the wet‐processed one achieves to date the highest EQEs of 20.7%, 18.5%, 17.1%, and 13.6%, among its counterparts at the luminance of 1000, 3000, 5000, and 10 000 cd m?2, respectively. 相似文献

The efficiency roll‐off in blue phosphorescent organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) using different carbazole compounds as the host is systematically studied. While there is no significant difference in device efficiency, OLEDs using ter‐carbazole as the host show a reduction in efficiency roll‐off at high luminance. Data from transient photoluminescence and electroluminescence measurements show that the lower triplet–triplet annihilation (TTA) and triplet–polaron quenching (TPQ) rates in devices with the ter‐carbazole host compared with other carbazole hosts are the reasons for this reduced efficiency roll‐off. It is also found that the host materials with low glass transition temperatures are more susceptible to the efficiency roll‐off problem. 相似文献

Designing thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials with an efficient reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) process is regarded as the key to actualize efficient organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs) with low efficiency roll‐off. Herein, a novel molecular design strategy is reported where a typical TADF material 10‐phenyl‐10H, 10′H‐spiro[acridine‐9, 9′‐anthracen]‐10′‐one (ACRSA) is utilized as a functional electron donor to design TADF materials of 2,4,6‐triphenyl‐1,3,5‐triazine(TRZ)‐p‐ACRSA and TRZ‐m‐ACRSA. It is unique that the intramolecular charge transfer of the ACRSA moiety and the intramolecular and through‐space intermolecular charge transfer between the TRZ and ACRSA moieties, provide a “multichannel” effect to enhance the rate of the reverse intersystem crossing process (krisc) exceeding 10?6 s?1. TADF OLEDs based on TRZ‐p‐ACRSA as an emitter show a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 28% with reduced efficiency roll‐off (EQEs of 27.5% and 22.1% at 100 and 1000 cd m?2, respectively). Yellow phosphorescent OLEDs utilizing TRZ‐p‐ACRSA as a host material show record‐high EQE of 25.5% and power efficiency of 115 lm W?1, while phosphorescent OLEDs based on TRZ‐m‐ACRSA show further lower efficiency roll‐off with EQEs of 25.2%, 24.3%, and 21.5% at 100, 1000, and 10 000 cd m?2, respectively. 相似文献

By introducing a neat Pt(II)‐based phosphor with a remarkably short decay lifetime, a simplified doping‐free phosphorescent organic light‐emitting diode (OLED) with a forward viewing external quantum efficiency (EQE) and power efficiency of 20.3 ± 0.5% and 63.0 ± 0.4 lm W?1, respectively, is demonstrated. A quantitative analysis of how triplet‐triplet annihilation (TTA) and triplet‐polaron annihilation (TPA) affect the device EQE roll‐off at high current densities is performed. The contributions from loss of charge balance associated with charge leakage and field‐induced exciton dissociation are found negligible. The rate constants kTTA and kTPA are determined by time‐resolved photoluminescence experiments of a thin film and an electrically‐driven unipolar device, respectively. Using the parameters extracted experimentally, the EQE is modeled versus electric current characteristics of the OLEDs by taking both TTA and TPA into account. Based on this model, the impacts of the emitter lifetime, quenching rate constants, and exciton formation zone upon device efficiency are analyzed. It is found that the short lifetime of the neat emitter is key for the reduction of triplet quenching. 相似文献

Luminescent materials with thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) can harvest singlet and triplet excitons to afford high electroluminescence (EL) efficiencies for organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs). However, TADF emitters generally have to be dispersed into host matrices to suppress emission quenching and/or exciton annihilation, and most doped OLEDs of TADF emitters encounter a thorny problem of swift efficiency roll‐off as luminance increases. To address this issue, in this study, a new tailor‐made luminogen (dibenzothiophene‐benzoyl‐9,9‐dimethyl‐9,10‐dihydroacridine, DBT‐BZ‐DMAC) with an unsymmetrical structure is synthesized and investigated by crystallography, theoretical calculation, spectroscopies, etc. It shows aggregation‐induced emission, prominent TADF, and interesting mechanoluminescence property. Doped OLEDs of DBT‐BZ‐DMAC show high peak current and external quantum efficiencies of up to 51.7 cd A?1 and 17.9%, respectively, but the efficiency roll‐off is large at high luminance. High‐performance nondoped OLED is also achieved with neat film of DBT‐BZ‐DMAC, providing excellent maxima EL efficiencies of 43.3 cd A?1 and 14.2%, negligible current efficiency roll‐off of 0.46%, and external quantum efficiency roll‐off approaching null from peak values to those at 1000 cd m?2. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is one of the most efficient nondoped TADF OLEDs with small efficiency roll‐off reported so far. 相似文献

Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials, which enable the full harvesting of singlet and triplet excited states for light emission, are expected as the third‐generation emitters for organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs), superseding the conventional fluorescence and phosphorescence materials. High photoluminescence quantum yield (ΦPL), narrow‐band emission (or high color purity), and short delayed fluorescence lifetime are all strongly desired for practical applications. However, to date, no rational design strategy of TADF emitters is established to fulfill these requirements. Here, an epoch‐making design strategy is proposed for producing high‐performance TADF emitters that concurrently exhibiting high ΦPL values close to 100%, narrow emission bandwidths, and short emission lifetimes of ≈1 µs, with a fast reverse intersystem crossing rate of over 106 s?1. A new family of TADF emitters based on dibenzoheteraborins is introduced, which enable both doped and non‐doped TADF‐OLEDs to achieve markedly high external electroluminescence quantum efficiencies, exceeding 20%, and negligible efficiency roll‐offs at a practical high luminance. Systematic photophysical and theoretical investigations and device evaluations for these dibenzoheteraborin‐based TADF emitters are reported here. 相似文献

Actualizing full singlet exciton yield via a reverse intersystem crossing from the high‐lying triplet state to singlet state, namely, “hot exciton” mechanism, holds great potential for high‐performance fluorescent organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs). However, incorporating comprehensive insights into the mechanism and effective molecular design strategies still remains challenging. Herein, three blue emitters (CNNPI, 2TriPE‐CNNPI, and 2CzPh‐CNNPI) with a distinct local excited (LE) state and charge‐transfer (CT) state distributions in excited states are designed and synthesized. They show prominent hybridized local and charge‐transfer (HLCT) states and aggregation‐induced emission enhancement properties. The “hot exciton” mechanism based on these emitters reveals that a balanced LE/CT distribution can simultaneously boost photoluminescence efficiency and exciton utilization. In particular, a nearly 100% exciton utilization is achieved in the electroluminescence (EL) process of 2CzPh‐CNNPI. Moreover, employing 2CzPh‐CNNPI as the emitter, emissive dopant, and sensitizing host, respectively, the EL performances of the corresponding nondoped pure‐blue, doped deep‐blue, and HLCT‐sensitized fluorescent OLEDs are among the most efficient OLEDs with a “hot exciton” mechanism to date. These results could shed light on the design principles for “hot exciton” materials and inspire the development of next‐generation high‐performance OLEDs. 相似文献

Previous studies have identified triplet‐triplet annihilation and triplet‐polaron quenching as the exciton density‐dependent mechanisms which give rise to the efficiency roll‐off observed in phosphorescent organic light‐emitting devices (OLEDs). In this work, these quenching processes are independently probed, and the impact of the exciton recombination zone width on the severity of quenching in various OLED architectures is examined directly. It is found that in devices employing a graded‐emissive layer (G‐EML) architecture the efficiency roll‐off is due to both triplet‐triplet annihilation and triplet‐polaron quenching, while in devices which employ a conventional double‐emissive layer (D‐EML) architecture, the roll‐off is dominated by triplet‐triplet annihilation. Overall, the efficiency roll‐off in G‐EML devices is found to be much less severe than in the D‐EML device. This result is well accounted for by the larger exciton recombination zone measured in G‐EML devices, which serves to reduce exciton density‐driven loss pathways at high excitation levels. Indeed, a predictive model of the device efficiency based on the quantitatively measured quenching parameters shows the role a large exciton recombination zone plays in mitigating the roll‐off. 相似文献

Interface exciplex represents a promising host material for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with barrier-free charge injection and highly confined recombination region. However, the efficiency of radiative recombination in pristine exciplex is usually low and needs to be improved by doping various emitters. In this study, the interface exciplex OLEDs doped with fluorescence, phosphorescence, and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters is fabricated to investigate the relationship between their excited-state properties and electroluminescence efficiencies. A maximum external quantum efficiency of 20% is achieved in interface exciplex OLEDs doped with TADF emitter, which corresponds to nearly 100% exciton utilization and is superior to those of fluorescence and phosphorescence emitters. Furthermore, optical spectroscopy and magneto-electroluminescence method are used to study the advantages of TADF emitter in interface exciplex host. The large dipole of TADF emitter is beneficial for harvesting energy from the charge-transfer state at the interface, and its reverse intersystem crossing avoids the accumulation of triplet excitons that leads to triplet-triplet annihilation in interface exciplex OLEDs. These results demonstrate that the photophysical process needs to be carefully considered in designing high-performance emitters for exciplex host materials, and it may bring in-depth understanding on improving exciton utilization and electroluminescence efficiency in interface exciplex OLEDs. 相似文献

In this combined experimental and theoretical study, a computational protocol is reported to predict the excited states in D‐π‐A compounds containing the B(FXyl)2 (FXyl = 2,6‐bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl) acceptor group for the design of new thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters. To this end, the effect of different donor and π‐bridge moieties on the energy gaps between local and charge‐transfer singlet and triplet states is examined. To prove this computationally aided design concept, the D‐π‐B(FXyl)2 compounds 1 – 5 were synthesized and fully characterized. The photophysical properties of these compounds in various solvents, polymeric film, and in a frozen matrix were investigated in detail and show excellent agreement with the computationally obtained data. Furthermore, a simple structure–property relationship is presented on the basis of the molecular fragment orbitals of the donor and the π‐bridge, which minimize the relevant singlet–triplet gaps to achieve efficient TADF emitters. 相似文献

Purely organic light‐emitting materials, which can harvest both singlet and triplet excited states to offer high electron‐to‐photon conversion efficiencies, are essential for the realization of high‐performance organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs) without using precious metal elements. Donor–acceptor architectures with an intramolecular charge‐transfer excited state have been proved to be a promising system for achieving these requirements through a mechanism of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). Here, luminescent wedge‐shaped molecules, which comprise a central phthalonitrile or 2,3‐dicyanopyrazine acceptor core coupled with various donor units, are reported as TADF emitters. This set of materials allows systematic fine‐tuning of the band gap and exhibits TADF emissions that cover the entire visible range from blue to red. Full‐color TADF‐OLEDs with high maximum external electroluminescence quantum efficiencies of up to 18.9% have been demonstrated by using these phthalonitrile and 2,3‐dicyanopyrazine‐based TADF emitters. 相似文献

This article describes the first systematic investigation of how the efficiency roll‐off in organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs) is influenced by the position and orientation of the emitter molecules within the OLED cavity. The efficiency roll‐off is investigated for two OLED stacks containing either the phosphorescent emitter Ir(MDQ)2(acac) or Ir(ppy)3 by varying the distance between emitter and metal cathode; a strong influence of emitter position and orientation on roll‐off is observed. The measurements are modeled by triplet‐triplet‐annihilation (TTA) theory yielding the critical current density and the TTA rate constant. It is found that Ir(MDQ)2(acac) shows the lowest roll‐off when the emitter is located in the first optical maximum of the electromagnetic field, whereas the roll‐off of the Ir(ppy)3 stack is lowest when the emitter is positioned closer to the metal cathode. Measurement and modeling of time‐resolved electroluminescence show that the different roll‐off behavior is due to the different orientation and the corresponding change of the decay rate of the emissive dipoles of Ir(MDQ)2(acac) and Ir(ppy)3. Finally, design principles are developed for optimal high‐brightness performance by modeling the roll‐off as a function of emitter‐cathode distance, emissive dipole orientation, and radiative efficiency. 相似文献

Recently, a new route to achieve 100% internal quantum efficiency white organic light‐emitting diodes (WOLEDs) is proposed by utilizing noble‐metal‐free thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters due to the radiative contributions of triplet excitons by effective reverse intersystem crossing. However, a systematic understanding of their reliability and internal degradation mechanisms is still deficient. Here, it demonstrates high performance and operational stable purely organic fluorescent WOLEDs consisting of a TADF assistant host via a strategic exciton management by multi‐interlayers. By introducing such interlayers, carrier recombination zone could be controlled to suppress the generally unavoidable quenching of long‐range triplet excitons, successfully achieving remarkable external quantum efficiency of 15.1%, maximum power efficiency of 48.9 lm W−1, and extended LT50 lifetime (time to 50% of initial luminance of 1000 cd m−2) exceeding 2000 h. To this knowledge, this is the first pioneering work for realizing high efficiency, low efficiency roll‐off, and operational stable WOLEDs based on a TADF assistant host. The current findings also indicate that broadening the carrier recombination region in both interlayers and yellow emitting layer as well as restraining exciplex quenching at carrier blocking interface make significant roles on reduced efficiency roll‐off and enhanced operational lifetime. 相似文献

To develop high‐performance thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) exciplex emitters, a novel strategy of introducing a single‐molecule TADF emitter as one of the constituting materials has been presented. Such a new type of exciplex TADF emitter will have two reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) routes on both the pristine TADF molecules and the exciplex emitters, benefiting the utilization of triplet excitons. Based on a newly designed and synthesized single‐molecule TADF emitter MAC, a highly efficient exciplex emitter MAC:PO‐T2T has been obtained. The device based on MAC:PO‐T2T with a weight ratio of 7:3 exhibits a low turn‐on voltage of 2.4 V, high maximum efficiency of 52.1 cd A?1 (current efficiency), 45.5 lm W?1 (power efficiency), and 17.8% (external quantum efficiency, EQE), as well as a high EQE of 12.3% at a luminance of 1000 cd m?2. The device shows the best performance among reported organic light‐emitting devices based on exciplex emitters. Such high‐efficiency and low‐efficiency roll‐off should be ascribed to the additional reverse intersystem crossing process on the MAC molecules, showing the advantages of the strategy described in this study. 相似文献

Quenching of singlets by long‐lived triplets is a serious issue for lasing from organic laser dyes, especially under long pulse excitation. As a strategy to scavenge or manage unnecessary triplets, an organic laser dye is dispersed into a host material having high singlet and low triplet energy levels [a large singlet‐triplet energy gap (ΔEST)]. However, finding such a host material having a triplet scavenging capability is limited. In this study, an organic laser dye, 2,6‐dicyano‐1,1‐diphenyl‐λ5σ4‐phosphinine (DCNP), having a small ΔEST of ≈0.44 eV is synthesized, and thus 4‐4′‐bis[(N‐carbazole)styryl] biphenyl (BSBCz) can be employed as a triplet scavenging host, i.e., the triplets formed on DCNP are easily transferred to BSBCz. A 1 wt%‐DCNP‐doped BSBCz film is formed on a mixed‐order distributed feedback grating, showing lasing with a low threshold value of ≈0.86 µJ cm?2 and a full‐width‐at‐half‐maximum value of ≈0.5 nm. Because of the suppressed singlet‐triplet annihilation, DCNP‐based laser devices operating under a continuous‐wave regime, with a low threshold of 72 W cm?2 and a long laser half‐lifetime of ≈3 min, are demonstrated. These results indicate a possibility of the wider selection of host materials, easing a material design strategy of fabricating high‐performance laser devices in future. 相似文献

Excited state characters and components play a decisive role in photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminescence (EL) properties of organic light‐emitting materials (OLEDS). Charge‐transfer (CT) state is beneficial to enhance the singlet exciton utilizations in fluorescent OLEDs by an activated reverse intersystem crossing process, due to the minimized singlet and triplet energy splitting in CT excitons. However, the dominant CT component in the emissive state significantly reduces the PL efficiency in such materials. Here, the strategy is to carry out a fine excited state modulation, aiming to reach a golden combination of the high PL efficiency locally emissive (LE) component and the high exciton utilizing CT component in one excited state. As a result, a quasi‐equivalent hybridization of LE and CT components is obtained in the emissive state upon the addition of only an extra phenyl ring in the newly synthesized material 4‐[2‐(4′‐diphenylamino‐biphenyl‐4‐yl)‐phenanthro[9,10‐d]imidazol‐1‐yl]‐benzonitrile (TBPMCN), and the nondoped OLED of TBPMCN exhibited a record‐setting performance: a pure blue emission with a Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage coordinate of (0.16, 0.16), a high external quantum efficiency of 7.8%, and a high yield of singlet exciton of 97% without delayed fluorescence phenomenon. The excited state modulation could be a practical way to design low‐cost, high‐efficiency fluorescent OLED materials. 相似文献

The “hot exciton” mechanism based on high-lying reverse intersystem crossing process has great advantages in achieving high-performance deep-blue organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Nevertheless, how to solve the loss of high-lying excitons to improve device performance further is a pressing and challenging issue. To break through this shackle, a novel deep-blue emitter based on “exciton recovery” strategy is successfully design, namely CAT. By combining the transient absorption spectrum, theoretical calculation, magneto-electroluminescence, and transient-electroluminescence measurements, the multi-channeled pathways of excitons utilization via hot exciton and triplet-triplet annihilation processes is comprehensively demonstrated, and the proportion of singlet excitons by each channel. Finally, a high exciton utilization efficiency is successfully achieved, and the non-doped OLED based on CAT exhibit an excellent external quantum efficiency of 10.39% with the CIE coordinates of (0.15, 0.087). Furthermore, the sensitized blue fluorescent OLED by CAT as host also achieves excellent performance. More importantly, the operational lifetime of the “multi-channel” sensitized device is evaluated for the first time, performing the remarkable LT50 (lifetime to 50% of the initial luminance) of 320 h at 540 cd m−2. These results fully reveal the significance of the “exciton recovery” strategy and give new inspiration for exploring high-performance blue OLEDs. 相似文献

Organic semiconductor lasers (OSLs) have emerged as particularly challenging. One of the major issues preventing the successful realization of lasing from organic emitters under electrically pumped conditions is the inevitable population of triplet excitons. Herein, a novel concept is presented to construct triplet–singlet guest–host gain systems with incorporating iridium complexes as the triplet sensitizers and a fluorescent conjugated polymer as the gain media to achieve light amplification. The direct triplet–singlet energy transfer process is confirmed by photoluminescence excitation spectra, photoinduced absorption spectroscopy, and fluorescence transients of the blend samples. Successful light amplification with a threefold lower amplified spontaneous emission threshold and much better lasing performance is demonstrated for the resulting triplet–singlet guest–host system as compared with the corresponding gain system without triplet sensitizers. Moreover, under electrically driven conditions, the fluorescent organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on the triplet–singlet guest–host systems with “triplet sensitizers” exhibit enhanced electrical performance relative to those without. The work suggests an effective general methodology to utilize both the singlet and triplet excitons to contribute to the light amplification with excellent electrical performance in OLEDs, opening prospects toward attempting electrically pumped OSLs. 相似文献

Triarylboranes are widely used as luminescent molecules. However, there are few reports focused on thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) characteristics. In this study, new donor-acceptor triarylboranes exhibiting TADF characteristics are designed, synthesized, and applied to organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) as an emitter. Electro-accepting dimesitylphenylborane connected with carbazole (7), 9,9-dimethylacridane (8), and phenoxazine (9) as electron-donating units are synthesized in only two steps with good yield. Compounds 8 and 9 exhibit light blue and green TADF with good PL quantum yields of 89 and 87% in toluene, respectively. On the other hand, compound 7 shows normal deep blue fluorescence without TADF characteristics. Density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory studies reveal that high electron-donating ability of donor unit and large dihedral angles between cross-linking phenylene and donor units are attributed to spatially separate the HOMO and LUMO, which results in lowering the energy gap between lowest singlet (S1) and triplet (T1) excited states and accelerating reverse intersystem crossing of excitons from T1 to S1 states. OLEDs using compounds 8 and 9 as emitters exhibit light blue and green emission with very good external quantum efficiencies of 16.0 and 17.3%, respectively. 相似文献
