The work‐hardening response and mechanical properties of dual phase steels originated from different initial microstructures under low and high martensite volume fractions were investigated using a typical carbon‐manganese steel. The modified Crussard‐Jaoul analysis was used for studying the work‐hardening stages and the deformation behavior of ferrite and martensite. It was revealed that the initial martensitic microstructure before intercritical annealing is much better than the full annealed banded ferritic‐pearlitic and spheroidized microstructures in terms of work‐hardening capacity and strength‐ductility trade off. By increasing the amount of martensite, via intercritical annealing at higher temperatures, the ductility decreased but the tensile toughness of dual phase steels increased toward reaching the domain of extra‐advanced high‐strength steels due to the enhancement of work‐hardening rate.

Fe-2% Si-1.5% Mn steels with three levels of carbon content (0.10, 0.14 and 0.19 wt%) were intercritically annealed followed by water quenching to obtain dual phase (martensite plus ferrite) structure. It is found that the ultimate tensile strength of dual phase steels increased with increasing the volume fraction as well as the tensile strength of martensite. The tensile strength of dual phase steel can be predicted using the law of mixtures although the predicted tensile strength is slightly higher than the experimental one. It is suggested that martensite never reaches its ultimate tensile strength when the necking of dual phase steels occurs.

Abstract

The deformation behaviour of the two phases of three plain carbon dual–phase steels after various treatments has been studied using a scanning electron microscope equipped with a tensile straining stage. The distribution of strains between the ferrite and martensite phases, as well as among the different grains of each phase, was observed to be inhomogeneous. The martensite/ferrite strain ratio, which defines the degree of uniformity of straining between the phases, depends on the microstructural parameters of the steels: it increases with increasing volume fraction of martensite, but decreases as the carbon content of the martensite increases. Tempering at various temperatures causes a decrease in the martensite/ferrite microhardness ratio and hence causes an increase in the strain ratio. The macroscopic strain of the specimen at which the martensite begins to deform was also found to be dependent on the microstructural parameters. Regions of applicability of the existing theories of the strength of dual–phase steels can be estimated according to the deformation condition of the martensite.

Abstract

A multiphase microstructure was obtained in a medium carbon microalloyed steel using two step cooling (TSC) from a lower than usual finish forging/rolling temperature (800–850°C). A low temperature anneal was then used to optimise the tensile properties. A multiphase microstructure (ferrite–bainite–martensite) resulted from forging as well as rolling. These were characterised using optical and scanning and transmission electron microscopy. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and hardness measurements were used for phase identification. Tensile properties and work hardening curves were obtained for both the forged and the rolled multiphase variants. A Jaoul–Crussard (J–C) analysis was carried out on the tensile data to understand the basic mode of deformation behaviour. Rolling followed by the TSC process produced a uniform microstructure with a very fine grain boundary allotriomorphic ferrite, in contrast to the forged variety, which contained in addition coarse idiomorphic ferrite. The volume fraction of ferrite and its contiguity ratio in the rolled microstructure were greater than in the forged grade. The rolled microstructure exhibited a better combination of strength and toughness than that of the forged material. The rolled steel work hardened more than the forged variety owing to its fine, uniform (bainite–martensite and ferrite) microstructure. Retained austenite present in these steels underwent a strain induced transformation to martensite during tensile deformation. The J–C analysis of the work hardening rates revealed typical three stage behaviour in both varieties during tensile deformation.

ABSTRACT

Medium-Mn steels are energetically investigated as a candidate of the third generation advanced high strength steels (AHSSs). However, their phase transformation and microstructaure evolution during various heat treatments and thermomechanical processing are still unclear. The present study first confirmed the kinetics of static phase transformation behaviour in a 3Mn-0.1C medium-Mn steel. Hot compression tests were also carried out to investigate the influence of high-temperature deformation of austenite on subsequent microstructure evolution. It was found that static ferrite transformation was quite slow in this steel, but ferrite transformation was greatly accelerated by the hot deformation in austenite and ferrite two-phase regions. Characteristic dual-phase microstructures composed of martensite and fine-grained ferrite were obtained, which exhibited superior mechanical properties.

The present investigation is concerned with the three metastable austenitic steels AISI 304 (X5CrNi1810), 321 (X6CrNiTi1810), and 348 (X10CrNiNb189). In the temperature range ?60 °C ≤ T ≤ 25 °C tensile and fatigue tests were performed to characterize the mechanical and phase transformation behavior using stress‐elongation, stress–strain hysteresis, and magnetic measurements. The mechanical properties are significantly influenced by the temperature dependent deformation induced phase transformation from austenite to α′‐martensite which are combined with pronounced hardening processes. Furthermore microhardness measurements after fracture could be correlated with the results of the fatigue tests.

The effect of martensite morphology on the impact and tensile properties of dual phase steels with a 0.25 volume fraction of martensite (Vm) under different heat treatments was investigated. These treatments are direct quenching (DQ) and step quenching (SQ) that result in different microstructures and mechanical properties. To process dual phase steels, a low carbon manganese steel was used. At first the banding present in the initial steel was eliminated, then the two different heat treatments were applied. To reach a 0.25 volume fraction of martensite a variation of intercritical annealing temperatures was adopted for both treatments that allowed the evolution of different volume fraction of martensite. Phase analysis showed that an intercritical temperature of 725 °C (between A3, A1) gives the desired 0.25 Vm of martensite. A comparison of impact, tensile and ductile–brittle transition temperature (DBTT) indicates that the microstructure of the direct treatment has a better toughness. The DBTT for the DQ and SQ treatment is ?49 and ?6 °C, respectively.

Dual phase (DP) steels with network and fibrous martensite were produced by intercritical annealing heat treatment cycles. Some of these steels were deformed at dynamic strain aging temperatures. Room temperature tensile tests of specimens deformed at 300 °C showed that both yield and ultimate tensile strengths for both morphologies increased, while total elongation decreased. Fatigue test results before and after high temperature deformation showed that dynamic strain aging has a stronger effect on fatigue properties of dual phase steels with fibrous martensite. Cracks in DP steels with fibrous martensite propagate in a tortuous path in soft ferrite phase, while they pass of both hard and soft phases in DP steels with network martensite.

The resistance of X52 and X60 API steels to sulphide stress cracking (SSC) was tested by tensile tests at a constant load and also by slow strain rate tensile (SSRT) tests. Both steels were tested after hot-rolling, when they had a microstructure which consisted predominantly of ferrite and pearlite. They were then tested after laboratory quenching and tempering, when their microstructure was predominantly of tempered bainite or martensite. The results showed that the resistance of the steel to SSC depended strongly on the microstructure when it was tested under a constant load. In this case, the quenching and tempering considerably increased the resistance of the steel to SSC. The results of SSRT tests were similar regardless of the heat treatment used. Non-metallic inclusions seemed to play an important role as crack initiation sites during the SSRT tests; this may be due to the hydrogen–deformation interaction. The resistance to SSC varied as a function of the specimen's orientation during the SSRT tests. This may be related to the geometric characteristics of the non-metallic inclusions.

The phenomenon of delayed failure detected in metastable austenitic steels is connected with martensite formation during plastic deformation of austenite. In these steels a zone with a martensitic structure exhibiting a high level of residual internal microstresses develops ahead of a stress concentrator. In model representations a scheme has been suggested for distribution of deformation zones and stresses ahead of a stress concentrator. It is proposed that during delayed fracture a crack generates close to the boundary of plastically and elastically deformed martensite. A force criterion has been established for crack generation during delayed failure of metastable austenitic steel, i.e., the maximum local tensile stress (MLTS). The threshold value of the maximum local tensile stress does not depend on stress concentrator geometry and it is characterized by the tendency of metastable austenitic steel towards delayed failure.Central Scientific-Research Institute of Ferrous Metallurgy, Moscow. An in situ magnetic device was employed to quantify the deformation induced martensite in a Fe–19Cr–3Mn–4Ni–0.15C–0.15N (wt-%) steel during tensile testing in the temperature range of ?40 to 22°C. The new device consists of an electromagnetic field which serves to magnetise the martensite phase as it forms during tensile loading and a second coil to detect the effective electrical potential difference induced by the magnetisation of tensile specimens. To implement the in situ measurement system, a correlation was necessary between the induced electrical potential difference and the deformation induced martensite fractions during uniaxial static tensile tests. The correlation procedure was found to require only the quantification of deformation induced martensite content in a tensile specimen strained until fracture using an ex situ magnetic saturation unit.

Fatigue performance of ferrite–martensite (FM) and ferrite–bainite (FB) dual‐phase (DP) steels used in automotive wheels has been compared in terms of (i) high‐cycle fatigue performance and failure mechanisms and (b) low‐cycle fatigue performance (Δεt/2 = 0.002 to 0.01) and associated deformation mechanisms. FBDP steel exhibits moderately better high‐cycle fatigue performance, owing to delay in microcrack initiation. In FBDP steel, microcracks initiate predominantly along ferrite grain boundaries, while that at FB interface is significantly delayed in comparison with FMDP steel, where few microcracks appear at FM interface even below the endurance limit. During low‐cycle fatigue, however, FMDP steel performs considerably better than FBDP steel till Δεt/2 ≤ 0.005 attributed to initial cyclic hardening, followed by cyclically stable behaviour exhibited by FMDP steel. In sharp contrast, at all Δεt/2 > 0.002, FBDP steel undergoes continuous cyclic softening. The latter may cause undesirable deformation of wheels in service.

A new route to fabricate ultrafine grained (UFG) ferritic steel sheets without severe plastic deformation is proposed in this article. A low-carbon steel sheet with a duplex microstructure composed of ferrite and martensite was cold-rolled to a reduction of 91% in thickness, and then annealed at 620–700 °C. The microstructure obtained through the process with annealing temperatures below 700 °C was the UFG ferrite including fine cementite particles homogenously dispersed. The grain size of ferrite matrix changed from 0.49 to 1.0 μm depending on the annealing temperature. Dynamic tensile properties of the produced UFG steels were investigated. The obtained UFG ferrite–cementite steels without martensite phase showed high strain rate sensitivity in flow stress. The UFG ferritic steels are expected to have high potential to absorb crash energy when applied to automobile body.

Abstract

The tensile deformation behaviour of 316LN stainless steel was investigated from ambient temperature up to 1000°C. The hardness and microstructure of area near tensile fracture were characterised. The results show that the engineering stress increases smoothly with engineering strain when the tensile temperature is at 400°C or below, while the plastic deformation stage displays a serrated/jerky flow at 600°C. At tensile temperatures of 800°C or above, the plastic deformation stage is dramatically prolonged. The deformation mechanisms of 316LN stainless steel are proposed to be sliding and twinning at 400°C or below, tangle dislocations due to cross-slipping at 600°C, dynamic recovery at 700°C, and dynamic recrystallisation at 800°C or above. The finding provides useful guidelines for the processing and service of 316LN stainless steel components at high temperatures.

The aim of this work is to nondestructively characterize the dual phase steels using the Magnetic Barkhausen Noise (MBN) method. By quenching of AISI 8620 steel specimens having two different starting microstructures, from various intercritical annealing temperatures (ICAT) in the ferrite-austenite region, the microstructures consisting of different volume fractions of martensite with morphological variations have been obtained. The microstructures were first conventionally characterized by metallographical investigations and hardness tests. Then, the MBN measurements were performed using a μSCAN commercial system. Good correlations between the martensite volume fraction, hardness and MBN emission have been obtained. MBN signal height clearly decreased as the ICAT, therefore the volume fraction of martensite increased. The effect of the initial microstructure prior to intercritical annealing has also been differentiated by the MBN measurements. It has been concluded that MBN method can be used as a useful tool for nondestructive characterization of dual phase steels.
