This paper presents an experimental study on the performance comparison of three different schemes of single-pump dispersion-compensating fiber (DCF)-based Raman/erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) hybrid amplifiers together with a DCF-based Raman-only amplifier in terms of static properties, dynamic properties, and system impact: Raman-only amplifier (Type I), Raman/EDFA hybrid amplifiers recycling residual Raman pump in a cascaded EDF located either after (Type II) or prior to (Type III) a DCF, and a Raman-assisted EDFA (Type IV), the concept of which was proposed by Kurosawa et al. With respect to the overall gain and system impact based on bit error rate (BER) measurements in a transmission system, the hybrid amplifier of Type II was found to have the best performance among the four types while the Raman-only amplifier shows the best tolerance to transient response. 相似文献

Transient phenomena of hybrid Raman/erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) upon optical channel add-drop are investigated. The transient responses of surviving channels are resulted from the combined dynamics of Raman amplifier and EDFA. It is shown that the suggested method employing fast gain control of EDFA only can effectively suppress the transient variation of output power. The transient-suppressing hybrid Raman/EDFA is proven to be enough for wavelength-division-multiplexing networks including reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexer and/or transparent optical cross-connect, if the optical switching speed is carefully chosen. 相似文献

This report presents a low-noise L-band erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) with a dispersion-compensating Raman amplifier. With an optimized prestage and 1500-nm Raman-pump laser diodes, the proposed EDFA achieved an internal noise figure of less than 4.5 dB over a 33-nm flat gain bandwidth within 0.5 dB at -2 dBm of large signal input power. 相似文献

In this paper, we present a comprehensive comparison of the performance of an 80-km-per-span erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) system and a hut-skipped (160-km-per-span) all-Raman system over standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) for the first time, using semianalytic models. The numerical results reveal that a hut-skipped all-Raman system (using one-order Raman pumping) can achieve comparable performance as the conventional 80-km-per-span EDFA system for a common 50-GHz-spaced 80 /spl times/ 10 Gb/s nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ) wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) system at typical fiber loss of 0.22 dB/km. For 100-GHz-spaced 40 /spl times/ 40 Gb/s carrier-suppressed return-to-zero (CS-RZ) WDM transmission, it was found that a hut-skipped all-Raman system can achieve even better performance than the current 80-km-per-span EDFA system. It was also found that the impact of pattern-dependent Raman crosstalk is more severe than interchannel cross-phase modulation (XPM) in a hut-skipped all-Raman system with 80 /spl times/ 10 Gb/s capacity. 相似文献

We measure the cross talk in a wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) system arising from cross-phase modulation (XPM) in an L-band erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA). This effect has the potential of becoming the dominant nonlinear crosstalk mechanism in L-band WDM systems using standard fiber. We discuss how appropriate amplifier design can reduce the XPM in the EDFA 相似文献
