Fecal bile acid and neutral sterol patterns were studied in eight healthy adult volunteers who were challenged withVibrio cholerae classical Ogawa 395 strain in the course of vaccine development studies. Bacterial 7α-dehydroxylation of cholic and chenodeoxycholic acids was not altered during experimentally induced cholera diarrhea, despite the fact that fecal weight in g/day (wet wt) was increased greatly during diarrhea (1913±390 vs 161±11 in controls, p<0.005). Consistent with the findings on bile acids, no significant changes in the production of coprostanol, epicoprostanol, or coprostanone were observed although the percentage of unmodified cholesterol was increased during the diarrheal episode (20.7±3.3% vs 11.9±2.3, p<0.02). Total concentrations of both bile acids and cholesterol in mg/g of feces (wet wt) were decreased considerably as a result of diarrhea). However, total bile acid and neutral steroid excretions in mg/kg/day in subjects with and without diarrhea do not appear to be different. Intestinal transit times, measured in eight subjects by the use of carmine red dye, were found to be shortened in diarrhea (5.8±1.1 hr vs 23.4±4.1 hr in controls, p<0.001). The results from this study are similar to those observed in experimentally induced travellers' diarrhea associated with toxigenicEscherichia coli, but they are in striking contrast to the changes in gastrointestinal steroid metabolism observed in acute shigello sis, an invasive intestinal infection.  相似文献

Different soluble dietary fibers known to alter cholesterol metabolism were fed to golden Syrian hamsters, and their specific impact on lipoproteins, biliary bile acid profile, and fecal sterol excretion was evaluated. Semipurified diets containing 20% fat; 0.12% cholesterol; and 8% of psyllium (PSY); high (hePE) and low (lePE) esterified pectin; or high (hvGG) and low (lvGG) viscous guar gum were fed for 5 wk. Compared to control, PSY caused a significant reduction in plasma cholesterol (2.9±0.5 vs. 5.5±0.5 mmol/L), whereas hePE, lePE, hvGG, or lvGG had no apparent effect on plasma lipids. Hepatic total and esterified cholesterol were substantially decreased with PSY, pectin and guar gum, whereby PSY produced the most pronounced effect. Distinctive changes existed in the bile acid profile related to the different fibers. In contrast to pectin and guar gum, PSY caused a significant increase in the cholate:chenodeoxycholate and the glycine:taurine conjugation ratio. Pectin and guar gum did not alter daily fecal neutral sterol excretion while PSY caused a 90% increase due to a higher fecal output. Daily fecal bile acid excretion and total fecal bile acid concentration were significantly increased by PSY, whereas hePE, lePE, hvGG, and lvGG revealed no or only minor effects. Taken together, the disparate hypocholesterolemic effects of PSY, pectin, and guar gum on cholesterol and bile acid metabolism in the hamster are possibly related to different physicochemical properties, e.g., viscosity and susceptibility to fermentation, affecting the fiber-mediated action in the intestine.  相似文献

The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of different surface cleaning methods on the shear bond strength (SBS) of zirconia ceramic surfaces. Seventy polished and cleaned zirconia disk specimens of 8 mm in diameter and 3.4 mm in thickness were immersed in fresh saliva. They were then pressed into a freshly mixed silicone disclosing medium. Six different cleaning methods were applied to the tested groups; they were airborne-particle abraded (AA), covered with a cleaning paste (Ivoclean®) (IV), etched with orthophosphoric acid (PA), immersed in alcohol (AL), rinsed with tap water only (WA), or cleaned with steam (SC). No surface cleaning was done after saliva immersion and silicone disclosing medium contamination to the control group (CC). The specimens were then bonded to an adhesive resin cement using polyethylene tubes. SBS was determined using a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min. The specimens were also examined with a scanning electron microscope and a stereomicroscope. Group AA yielded the highest SBS value (7.01 ± 1.4 MPa) among the groups, while Group WA had the lowest SBS value (3.03 ± 0.8 MPa). The SBS values of Group AA (7.01 ± 1.4 MPa) and IV (6.2 ± 1.7 MPa) were also significantly higher than those of the remaining four groups (p < 0.05). Within the limitations of this in vitro study, it was concluded that among the various cleaning methods tested, airborne-particle abrasion and Ivoclean® paste were effective in cleaning the zirconia surface.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a thermogenic supplement, Meltdown, on energy expenditure, fat oxidation, and hemodynamics before and after maximal treadmill exercise. In a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, cross-over design, 12 male participants underwent two testing sessions after consuming either the Meltdown or placebo supplement. While in a fasted state, participants rested for one hour, orally ingested either Meltdown or placebo and rested for another hour, performed a maximal treadmill exercise test, and then rested for another hour. Throughout the testing protocol, resting energy expenditure (REE) and respiratory exchange ratio (RER) were assessed. In addition, heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (BP) were assessed before and after exercise. Meltdown increased REE significantly more than placebo at 45 min (1.44 ± 0.25 vs. 1.28 ± 0.23 kcal/min; p = 0.003), 60 min (1.49 ± 0.28 vs. 1.30 ± 0.22 kcal/min; p = 0.025), and 120 min (1.51 ± 0.26 vs. 1.33 ± 0.27 kcals/min; p = 0.014) post-ingestion. Meltdown significantly decreased RER at 30 min (0.84 ± 0.03 vs. 0.91 ± 0.04; p = 0.022) and 45 min post-ingestion (0.82 ± 0.04 vs. 0.89 ± 0.05; p = 0.042), and immediately post-exercise (0.83 ± 0.05 vs. 0.90 ± 0.07; p = 0.009). Furthermore, over the course of the evaluation period, area under the curve assessment demonstrated that REE was significantly increased with Meltdown compared to placebo (992.5 ± 133.1 vs. 895.1 ± 296.1 kcals; p = 0.043), while RER was significantly less than placebo (5.55 ± 0.61 vs. 5.89 ± 0.44; p = 0.002) following ingestion. HR and BP were not significantly affected prior to exercise with either supplement (p > 0.05) and the exercise-induced increases for HR and BP decreased into recovery and were not different between supplements (p > 0.05). These data suggest that Meltdown enhances REE and fat oxidation more than placebo for several hours after ingestion in fully rested and post-exercise states without any adverse hemodynamic responses associated with maximal exercise.  相似文献

The blood concentration of 1,8-cineole and its metabolites was measured in six male brushtail possums while they voluntarily fed on diets laced with varying concentrations of cineole for 3 d. On the third day, blood samples were collected during and after each bout of feeding for 3 hr. Blood cineole was measured by using headspace solid-phase microextraction (SPME), while cineole metabolites were measured by liquid–liquid extraction followed by gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy. Feeding patterns were measured by continual recording of residual food weight and time. Cineole absorption was rapid, resulting in a peak blood concentration at the end of each feeding bout. The blood concentration of cineole did not exceed a critical value (51.8 ± 14.1 μmol/l) regardless of the concentration in the diet. Food and, therefore, cineole intake was regulated. The amount of food ingested in the first feeding bout decreased from 236 ± 52 g on the control diet to 36 ± 20 g on the 4% cineole diet. The amount of cineole ingested in the first bout (1.18 ± 1.10 g) was the same regardless of the dietary concentration and was controlled by the size of the meal. Total food eaten during the 7-hr feeding session decreased by 64% from 368 ± 94 g (control diet) to 131 ± 52 g (4% diet). Total cineole intake increased from 2.47 ± 0.60 g (1% diet) to 5.05 ± 2.41 g (4% diet). Cineole metabolites accumulated throughout the sampling period and were generally still rising at the end of blood sampling period. Blood levels of metabolites were at least 10-fold higher than cineole levels. The immediate control of feeding seems to be regulated by blood levels of cineole, whereas metabolites are likely to be more important in regulating the chronic ingestion of cineole.  相似文献

Background

The purpose of this study was to determine whether sedentary obese women with knee OA initiating an exercise and weight loss program may experience more beneficial changes in body composition, functional capacity, and/or markers of health following a higher protein diet compared to a higher carbohydrate diet with or without GCM supplementation.

Methods

Thirty sedentary women (54 ± 9 yrs, 163 ± 6 cm, 88.6 ± 13 kg, 46.1 ± 3% fat, 33.3 ± 5 kg/m2) with clinically diagnosed knee OA participated in a 14-week exercise and weight loss program. Participants followed an isoenergenic low fat higher carbohydrate (HC) or higher protein (HP) diet while participating in a supervised 30-minute circuit resistance-training program three times per week for 14-weeks. In a randomized and double blind manner, participants ingested supplements containing 1,500 mg/d of glucosamine (as d-glucosamine HCL), 1,200 mg/d of chondroitin sulfate (from chondroitin sulfate sodium), and 900 mg/d of methylsulfonylmethane or a placebo. At 0, 10, and 14-weeks, participants completed a battery of assessments. Data were analyzed by MANOVA with repeated measures.

Results

Participants in both groups experienced significant reductions in body mass (-2.4 ± 3%), fat mass (-6.0 ± 6%), and body fat (-3.5 ± 4%) with no significant changes in fat free mass or resting energy expenditure. Perception of knee pain (-49 ± 39%) and knee stiffness (-42 ± 37%) was decreased while maximal strength (12%), muscular endurance (20%), balance indices (7% to 20%), lipid levels (-8% to -12%), homeostasis model assessment for estimating insulin resistance (-17%), leptin (-30%), and measures of physical functioning (59%), vitality (120%), and social function (66%) were improved in both groups with no differences among groups. Functional aerobic capacity was increased to a greater degree for those in the HP and GCM groups while there were some trends suggesting that supplementation affected perceptions of knee pain (p < 0.08).

Conclusions

Circuit style resistance-training and weight loss improved functional capacity in women with knee OA. The type of diet and dietary supplementation of GCM provided marginal additive benefits.

Fecal steroid compositions of 82 human subjects of various ages and diets and gastrointestinal status were examined by gas liquid chromatography. Progressive increases in bacterial activities on both bile acids and neutral sterols were observed with the advance of age in infants and children. The patterns in the 4-year-olds approached those observed in adults. Bacterial activites on fecal steroids were found to be decreased in adult subjects with acute shigellosis and in those challenged by castor oil. In contrast, no significant changes in fecal steroid profiles were observed in the subjects with traveller's diarrhea assoicated with toxigenicEscherichia coli. The effects of diarrhea on fecal steroids of infants under 11/2 years were less consistent than those of adults. However, a close relationship was observed between the degree of 7α-dehydroxylation of cholic acid (expressed as the ratio of deoxycholic to the sum of deoxycholic and cholic acids) and the percentage of cholesterol in the feces (r= 0.921, p<0.001). The correlation between the production of lithocholic acid and the percentage cholesterol was also good (r=−0.739, p<0.001). Analysis of neutral steroids may be a good index of intraluminal bile acid metabolism.  相似文献

The rate of Boudouard (C-CO2) reaction catalyzed by Li2O and Li2CO3 was investigated in the temperature range 839°–1050°C. The rate data is reported in the form of Fractional burn-off (F) vs time (t) plots. The experimental rate constant (K) data deduced from the initial linear region of these plots is represented by log K = 2.901(±0.186) ? 22,240(±1,020)2.303RT; K is in gm/gm min. The experimental rate constant data was corrected for pore-diffusion and film mass transfer effects. The intrinsic rate constant (Kv) was found to exhibit the following temperature-dependence: log Kv = 5.471(±0.353) ? 48,040(±1,920)2.303RT; Kv is in moles/cm3atm sec. The effect of feeding iron-deficient diets to rats on the hepatic stearoyl-CoA desaturase activity was examined since iron is present in the Δ9 desaturation system. Separate groups of rats were fed low iron diets without fat (FF-Fe) or containing either 14% hydrogenated coconut oil (HCNO-Fe) or 14% corn oil (CO-Fe) for 10 weeks. Diets supplemented with iron (FF+Fe, HCNO+Fe and CO+Fe) were fed to the corresponding control groups. Stearoyl-CoA desaturase activity in the liver microsomes of rats in the CO+Fe group (2.55±0.17 nmol oleate produced/min/mg protein) was about half of that in the HCNO+Fe (4.76±0.15) and FF+Fe (5.38±0.18) diet groups. In rats which were fed iron-deficient diets, hepatic desaturase levels were reduced significantly as compared to those of controls (1.0±0.06, CO-Fe; 2.11±0.13, HCNO-Fe; 3.65±0.1, FF-Fe). The hemoglobin (Hb) and hematocrit (Hct) levels in blood showed moderate iron depletion only in the CO-Fe group. Hence, dietary polyunsaturated fat promotes the onset of iron deficiency. Furthermore, even before the blood Hb and Hct values express iron depletion, the effect of feeding low iron diets was observed by the reduction of hepatic Δ9 desaturase activity in rats fed HCNO-Fe and FF-Fe diets.  相似文献

In recent studies, the life span of stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive (SHRSP) rats was altered by a variety of dietary fats. It was relatively shorter in rats fed canola oil as the sole source of fat. The present study was performed to find out whether the fatty acid profile and the high content of sulfur compounds in canola oil could modulate the life span of SHRSP rats. SHRSP rats (47 d old, n=23/group) were matched by body weight and systolic blood pressure and fed semipurified diets containing 10% canola oil, high-palmitic canola oil, low-sulfur canola oil, soybean oil, high-oleic safflower oil, a fat blend that mimicked the fatty acid composition of canola oil, or a fat blend high in saturated fatty acids. A 1% sodium chloride solution was used as drinking water to induce hypertension. After consuming the diets for 37 d, five rats from each dietary group were killed for collection of blood and tissue samples for biochemical analysis. The 18 remaining animals from each group were used for determining their life span. The mean survival time of SHRSP rats fed canola oil (87.4±4.0 d) was not significantly different (P>0.05) from those fed low-sulfur canola oil (89.7±8.5 d), suggesting that content of sulfur in canola oil has no effect on the life span of SHRSP rats. The SHRSP rats fed the noncanola oil-based diets lived longer (mean survival time difference was 6–13 d, P<0.05) than those fed canola and low-sulfur canola oils. No marked differences in the survival times were observed among the noncanola oil-based groups. The fatty acid composition of the dietary oils and of red blood cells and liver of SHRSP rats killed after 37 d of treatment showed no relationship with the survival times. These results suggest that the fatty acid profile of vegetable oils plays no important role on the life span of SHRSP rat. However, phytosterols in the dietary oils and in liver and brain were inversely correlated with the mean survival times, indicating that the differential effects of vegetable oils might be ascribed, at least partly, to their different phytosterol contents.  相似文献

A semipurified, cholesterol-free diet containing 40% carbohydrate can produce aortic sudanophilia or aortic atherosclerosis in vervet monkeys (Ceroopithecus aethiops pygerethrus) depending on the particular carbohydrate fed. Four groups of vervet monkeys (three males and three females per group) were fed semipurified diets containing lactose. Two of the groups were also fed 15% cellulose (C) or 15% cellulose plus 0.1% cholesterol (CC); the two other groups were fed 15% pectin (P) or 15% pectin plus 0.1% cholesterol (PC). The average serum total cholesterol and low density lipoprotein cholesterol levels over the entire feeding period (mg/dl±SEM) were, for C, 156±14 and 95±5; for P, 173±15 and 112±8; for CC, 187±27 and 122±21; and for PC, 155±11 and 108±7. Cholesterol levels at autopsy (mg/dl±SEM) were, for C, 103±6; for P, 108±16; for CC, 92±9; and for PC, 106±7. Aortic sudanophilia (percentage of area) was, for C, 5.9±2.7; for P, 13.5±9.4; for CC, 5.3±2.1; and for PC, 21.6±10.3. Dietary pectin led to more severe sudanophilia (increased by 129% in the absence of cholesterol and by 308% in its presence) than did cellulose. Analysis of aortic glycosaminoglycans (GAG) revealed that dermatan sulfate levels fell in both cholesterol-fed groups, and chondroitin sulfate fell in aortas of group CC. Heparan sulfate levels were unaffected by cholesterol feeding. Hexuronic acid, galactosamine and hexosamine levels were elevated in the pectin-fed monkeys, but levels were unaffected by dietary cholesterol. The current study was conducted to evaluate the effects of various dietary n?3/n?6 ratio on growth and lipid metabolism in gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) juveniles. The fish were fed ad libitum on three isoproteic (52%), isolipidic (14%), and isoenergetic diets (21 MJ/kg), formulated to contain three different n?3/n?6 ratios: a high (3.8), medium (2.5), or low (0.9) ratio. Fish grew from 9.5 ± 0.1 g to 54.2 ± 0.7 g in 12 weeks. Growth rate (2.2% BW/day), voluntary feed intake (2.4 ± 0.1% BM/day), feed conversion ratio (1.38 ± 0.05), and net protein utilization (27.5 ± 1.0%) did not vary among treatments. In contrast, body lipid content and lipid deposition efficiency were significantly reduced in fish fed low n?3/n?6 ratio. Fish fed the highest n?3/n?6 ratio showed the lowest hepatic glucose‐6‐phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) activity (p = 0.02). The n?3/n?6 ratio decreased, while DHA/eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) ratio increased significantly with decreasing dietary n?3/n?6 content. Among n?3 PUFA, the DHA and, particularly, the docosapentaenoic acid (DPA) showed the highest deposition rate both in muscle and liver. The lower deposition rate (<1) of linoleic acid (LA) and linolenic acid (LNA) suggests that a reduction in dietary n?3/n?6 ratio may stimulate their transport to the intermediary metabolism for energy production.  相似文献

To investigate octacosanol (OC) metabolism in humans and its influence on cholesterol metabolism, two studies were conducted. In the first study ten healthy women received daily 30 mg OC for a period of 4 weeks. Blood and feces samples were collected at baseline and after the intervention. Serum concentrations of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and HDL cholesterol were not altered following OC administration. Concentrations of excreted cholesterol end products decreased with the intervention (neutral sterols: 24.6 ± 9.7 mg/g vs. 20.3 ± 7.5 mg/g dry matter, P < 0.05; bile acids: 6.47 ± 3.89 mg/g vs. 4.03 ± 2.26 mg/g dry matter, P < 0.05). OC was not detected in serum samples, but the fecal OC concentration increased after the intervention period (11 ± 7 μg/g vs. 817 ± 179 μg/g dry matter, P < 0.05). In the second kinetic study on three participants, OC was identified in serums after oral application of 50 mg OC within 8 h. The decrease in the concentration of fecal cholesterol end products may underline a systemic effect of OC on cholesterol metabolism, even though the serum cholesterol levels were not influenced. The present investigation reports the solid particle erosion behaviour of randomly oriented short Lantana-Camara fiber-reinforced polymer composites (LCRPCs) using silica sand particles (200 ± 50 µm) as an erodent. The erosion rates of these composites have been evaluated at different impingement angles (15°–90°) and impact velocities (48 m/s–109 m/s) with constant feed rate of erodent (1.467 ± 0.02 gm/min). Highest wear rates were investigated at impingement angles 45°. Erosive wear rates were found to have a close relationship with the impingement angle of the erodent and speed. The morphology of eroded surfaces was examined by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Possible erosion mechanisms were discussed.  相似文献

Studies investigated the effects of dietary fatty acid composition and saturation on the regulation of very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) apo B flux, clearance, and conversion to low density lipoprotein (LDL) in guinea pigs fed semipurified diets containing 15% (w/w) corn oil (CO), lard (LA), or palm kernel oil (PK). Plasma cholesterol levels were highest with dietary PK (3.1±1.0 mmol/L) followed by LA (2.4±0.4 mmol/L) and CO (1.6±0.4 mmol/L) intake. VLDL particles were larger (P<0.05) in the LA (78±7 nm) and PK (69±10 nm) groups compared to animals fed CO (49±5 nm). VLDL-apo B fractional catabolic rates (FCR) were highest in guinea pigs fed the LA diet (P<0.05) and VLDL apo B flux, estimated from VLDL 125I-apo B turnover kinetics, were higher in LA compared to PK or CO fed guinea pigs. In the case of PK consumption, the kinetic estimates of VLDL apo B flux significantly underestimated rates compared to direct VLDL apo B secretion measurements and LDL turnover analyses. These data demonstrate that differences in the composition and amount of saturated fatty acids have differential effects on VLDL apo B flux, catabolism, and conversion to LDL which, together with changes in LDL receptor-mediated catabolism, determine plasma LDL cholesterol levels in guinea pigs. The data also indicate that kinetic analysis of VLDL metabolism in PK fed animals is inaccurate possibly due to the presence of a small, nonequilibrating pool of newly synthesized VLDL which is rapidly converted to LDL.  相似文献

The lipid composition of commercially canned single-strength orange juice ranged from 84–101 mg/100 ml juice (overall mean 95 ± 6). Phospholipid phosphorus, expressed as mg/100 ml juice, showed a range of from 1.56–1.95, while phospholipid phosphorus/lipid values (as µg-P/mg lipid) were within a very narrow range, 18.9 ± 1.1. The percentage distribution of lipid classes in these juices was 24–35% neutral lipids, 18–23% resin acids and glycolipids, and 43–53% phospholipids and other polar lipids. Five fatty acids, i.e. C16, C16:1, C18:1, C18:2, and C18:3, accounted for over 93% of all fatty acids. The relative percentages of C18:2 and C18:3 differed between seasonal juices. The lipid composition does not warrant inclusion in nutritional labeling; however, lipid levels may be useful in detecting adulteration.  相似文献

The impact of gaseous ozone on pH, °Brix, titratable acidity, and optical and rheological properties of fresh squeezed peach juice was investigated. Peach juice was exposed to ozone (0.06–2.48 g. L?1) in a bubble column at 20 ± 1 °C. Nonsignificant or slight changes in pH, °Brix, and titratable acidity were found during ozonation. Lightness (L*) slightly decreased in the first minute of O3 exposure and then remained practically constant, while a* parameter slightly increased in all treated samples. L* and a* parameters as well as Browning Index values reflected a slight increase in browning in ozonized juices. All juices, treated and untreated, exhibited non-Newtonian flow characteristics with pseudoplastic behavior. Significant reductions in apparent viscosity and a trend toward Newtonian flow as O3 treatment time increased were observed for ozonized juices. Soya products are used in infant formulas, hypoallergenic foods and vegetable mixtures mainly because of their good protein quality. They have good potential in feeding children from birth to adolescence and seem to satisfy the needs for total nitrogen and essential amino acids when ingested in adequate amounts. Other factors, however, must be considered for their use. The availability of calcium and phosphorous from soy formulas may be inadequate to support for any length of time the rapid bone mineralization of growing premature infants and should thus be fed to such infants only for a few weeks as therapeutic agents rather than as routine feeding formulas. Allergy to soya exists and may be serious, especially among infants with severe allergy to cow’s milk. Industrial processing may affect the quality of soya protein and it can produce allergenic substances in some protein foods. Thus, it may be necessary to evaluate the overall nutritional quality of new soya products before recommending their use. The effect of methionine supplementation on soya protein quality is not clear but it may be advisable in infant formulas. Soybean protein has great advantages when it is part of a food or a food system, particularly those based on cereal grains. Finally, the prevention by soya formulas of diarrhea induced by phototherapy is interesting, but its overall metabolic implications need further study.  相似文献

Male Syrian hamsters (60–70 g) were fed purified diets containing 5% fat (American Fat Blend) and 15% fiber with or without 0.3% cholesterol (0.86 mg/kcal), for 12 weeks. Hamsters fed the cholesterol-supplemented challenge diet revealed a major increase in plasma triglyceride between 9 and 12 weeks, whereas plasma cholesterol (which reflected body weight dynamics) increased three-fold up to nine weeks and plateaued (342±22vs. 122±5 mg/dL). The greatest increases in cholesterol occurred in the very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) and high density lipoprotein (HDL2) fractions. Gallstone incidence was similar (69%vs. 78%) for cholesterol-supplementedvs. control hamsters, but the type of stones differed. Of the cholesterol-supplemented hamsters with gallstones, 45% had cholesterol stones and 55% had pigment stones. Only pigment stones were seen in control hamsters. Hamsters with cholesterol stones were 25% heavier and transported most cholesterol in VLDL (33±5%), approximately double that in VLDL of cholesterol-supplemented hamsters with no stones (19±3%) or cholesterol-supplemented hamsters with pigment stones (21±3%). Hamsters with pigment stones or no stones (regardless of diet fed) transported the majority of their cholesterol in HDL2 (44%), whereas this figure was only 27% in hamsters that developed cholesterol stones. Thus pigment stones develop routinely in hamsters fed casein-based purified diets. Adding dietary cholesterol resulted in cholesterol gallstones only in those hamsters that gained the most weight and whose terminal VLDL/HDL cholesterol ratio exceeded 1.0, not unlike the lipoprotein profile of obese humans who develop cholesterol gallstones.
