The effects of the microstructural factors of electrodes, such as the porosity and pore size of anode supports and the thickness of cathodes, on the performance of an anode-supported thin film solid oxide fuel cell (TF-SOFC) are investigated. The performance of the TF-SOFC with a 1 μm-thick yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrolyte is significantly improved by employing anode supports with increased porosity and pore size. The maximum power density of the TF-SOFCs increases from 370 mW cm−2 to 624 mW cm−2 and then to over 900 mW cm−2 at 600 °C with increasing gas transport at the anode support. Thicker cathodes also improve cell performance by increasing the active reaction sites. The maximum power density of the cell increases from 624 mW cm−2 to over 830 mW cm−2 at 600 °C by changing the thickness of the lanthanum strontium cobaltite (LSC) cathode from 1 to 2-3 μm.  相似文献

A direct borohydride-hydrogen peroxide fuel cell employing carbon-supported Prussian Blue (PB) as mediated electron-transfer cathode catalyst is reported. While operating at 30 °C, the direct borohydride-hydrogen peroxide fuel cell employing carbon-supported PB cathode catalyst shows superior performance with the maximum output power density of 68 mW cm−2 at an operating voltage of 1.1 V compared to direct borohydride-hydrogen peroxide fuel cell employing the conventional gold-based cathode with the maximum output power density of 47 mW cm−2 at an operating voltage of 0.7 V. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis (EDAX) suggest that anchoring of Cetyl-Trimethyl Ammonium Bromide (CTAB) as a surfactant moiety on carbon-supported PB affects the catalyst morphology. Polarization studies on direct borohydride-hydrogen peroxide fuel cell with carbon-supported CTAB-anchored PB cathode exhibit better performance with the maximum output power density of 50 mW cm−2 at an operating voltage of 1 V than the direct borohydride-hydrogen peroxide fuel cell with carbon-supported Prussian Blue without CTAB with the maximum output power density of 29 mW cm−2 at an operating voltage of 1 V.  相似文献

The present work consists of a tubular-shaped direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) that is operated completely passively with methanol solution stored in a central fuel reservoir. The benefit of a tubular-shaped DMFC over a planar-shaped DMFC is the higher instantaneous volumetric power energy density (power/volume) associated with the larger active area provided by the tubular geometry. Membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) with identical compositions were installed in both tubular and planar-shaped, passive DMFCs and tested with 1, 2, and 3 M methanol solutions at room temperature. The peak power density for the tubular DMFC was 19.0 mW cm−2 and 24.5 mW cm−2 while the peak power density for the planar DMFC was 20.0 mW cm−2 and 23.0 mW cm−2 with Nafion® 212 and 115 MEAs, respectively. Even though the performance of the fuel cell improved with each increase in methanol concentration, the fuel and energy efficiencies decreased for both the tubular and planar geometries due to increased methanol crossover. The tubular DMFC experienced higher methanol crossover potentially due to a higher static fluid pressure in the anode fuel reservoir (AFR) caused by the vertical orientation of the tubular fuel reservoir. The performance of the tubular DMFC in this work represents an 870% improvement in power density from the previous best, passive, tubular DMFC found in the literature.  相似文献

GdBaCo2O5+x (GBCO) was evaluated as a cathode for intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cells. A porous layer of GBCO was deposited on an anode-supported fuel cell consisting of a 15 μm thick electrolyte of yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) prepared by dense screen-printing and a Ni–YSZ cermet as an anode (Ni–YSZ/YSZ/GBCO). Values of power density of 150 mW cm−2 at 700 °C and ca. 250 mW cm−2 at 800 °C are reported for this standard configuration using 5% of H2 in nitrogen as fuel. An intermediate porous layer of YSZ was introduced between the electrolyte and the cathode improving the performance of the cell. Values for power density of 300 mW cm−2 at 700 °C and ca. 500 mW cm−2 at 800 °C in this configuration were achieved.  相似文献

This paper reports on the development and performance test of an alkaline direct ethylene glycol fuel cell. The fuel cell consists of an anion-exchange membrane with non-platinum electrocatalysts at both the anode and cathode. It is demonstrated that this type of fuel cell with relatively cheap membranes and catalysts can result in a maximum power density of 67 mW cm−2 at 60 °C, which represents the highest performance that has so far been reported in the open literature. The high performance is mainly attributed to the increased kinetics of both the ethylene glycol oxidation reaction and oxygen reduction reaction rendered by the alkaline medium with the anion-exchange membrane.  相似文献

A novel polymer-inorganic composite electrolyte for direct methanol alkaline fuel cells (DMAFCs) is prepared by physically blending fumed silica (FS) with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to suppress the methanol permeability of the resulting nano-composites. Methanol permeability is suppressed in the PVA/FS composite when comparing with the pristine PVA membrane. The PVA membrane and the PVA/FS composite are immersed in KOH solutions to prepare the hydroxide-conducting electrolytes. The ionic conductivity, cell voltage and power density are studied as a function of temperature, FS content, KOH concentration and methanol concentration. The PVA/FS/KOH electrolyte exhibits higher ionic conductivity and higher peak power density than the PVA/KOH electrolyte. In addition, the concentration of KOH in the PVA/FS/KOH electrolytes plays a major role in achieving higher ionic conductivity and improves fuel cell performance. An open-circuit voltage of 1.0 V and a maximum power density of 39 mW cm−2 are achieved using the PVA/(20%)FS/KOH electrolyte at 60 °C with 2 M methanol and 6 M KOH as the anode fuel feed and with humidified oxygen at the cathode. The resulting maximum power density is higher than the literature data reported for DMAFCs prepared with hydroxide-conducting electrolytes and anion-exchange membranes. The long-term cell performance is sustained during a 100-h continuous operation.  相似文献

Nano-sized nickel with primary particle size of 2-3 nm has been successfully prepared for use as efficient anode catalysts in urea and urine fuel cells. XRD, SEM and TEM were used for characterisation of nano-sized nickel. Based on the previous communication, the performance of urea and urine fuel cells has been further improved when the relative humidity at the cathode was 100%. A maximum power density of 14.2 mW cm−2 was achieved when 1 M urea was used as fuel, humidified air as oxidant. The performance of urine fuel cells operating above room temperature was also reported for the first time and a power density of 4.23 mW cm−2 was achieved at 60 °C indicating potential application in urea-rich waste water treatment.  相似文献

In this paper water and air management systems were developed for a miniature, passive direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). The membrane thickness, water management system, air management system and gas diffusion electrodes (GDE) were examined to find their effects on the water balance coefficient, fuel utilization efficiency, energy efficiency and power density. Two membranes were used, Nafion® 112 and Nafion® 117. Nafion® 117 cells had greater water balance coefficients, higher fuel utilization efficiency and greater energy efficiency. A passive water management system which utilizes additional cathode gas diffusion layers (GDL) and a passive air management system which makes use of air filters was developed and tested. Water management was improved with the addition of two additional cathode GDLs. The water balance coefficients were increased from −1.930 to 1.021 for a cell using a 3.0 mol kg−1 solution at a current density of 33 mA cm−2. The addition of an air filter further increased the water balance coefficient to 1.131. Maximum power density was improved from 20 mW cm−2 to 25 mW cm−2 for 3.0 mol kg−1 solutions by upgrading from second to third generation GDEs, obtained from E-TEK. There was no significant difference in water management found between second and third generation GDEs. A fuel utilization efficiency of 63% and energy efficiency of 16% was achieved for a 3.0 mol kg−1 solution with a current density of 66 mA cm−2 for third generation GDEs.  相似文献

A direct alkaline fuel cell with a liquid potassium hydroxide solution as an electrolyte is developed for the direct use of methanol, ethanol or sodium borohydride as fuel. Three different catalysts, e.g., Pt-black or Pt/Ru (40 wt.%:20 wt.%)/C or Pt/C (40 wt.%), with varying loads at the anode against a MnO2 cathode are studied. The electrodes are prepared by spreading the catalyst slurry on a carbon paper substrate. Nickel mesh is used as a current-collector. The Pt–Ru/C produces the best cell performance for methanol, ethanol and sodium borohydride fuels. The performance improves with increase in anode catalyst loading, but beyond 1 mg cm−2 does not change appreciably except in case of ethanol for which there is a slight improvement when using Pt–Ru/C at 1.5 mA cm−2. The power density achieved with the Pt–Ru catalyst at 1 mg cm−2 is 15.8 mW cm−2 at 26.5 mA cm−2 for methanol and 16 mW cm−2 at 26 mA cm−2 for ethanol. The power density achieved for NaBH4 is 20 mW cm−2 at 30 mA cm−2 using Pt-black.  相似文献

A novel approach has been proposed to improve the water management of a passive direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) fed with neat methanol without increasing its volume or weight. By adopting perforated covers with different open ratios at the cathode, the water management has been significantly improved in a DMFC fed with neat methanol. An optimized cathode open ratio could ensure both the sufficient supply of oxygen and low water loss. While changing the open ratio of anode vaporizer can adjust the methanol crossover rate in a DMFC. Furthermore, the gas mixing layer, added between the anode vaporizer and the anode current collector to increase the mass transfer resistance, can improve the cell performance, decrease the methanol crossover, and increase the fuel efficiency. For the case of a DMFC fed with neat methanol, an anode vaporizer with the open ratio of 12% and a cathode open ratio of 20% produced the highest peak power density, 22.7 mW cm−2, and high fuel efficiency, 70.1%, at room temperature of 25 ± 1 °C and ambient humidity of 25-50%.  相似文献

The initialization of an anode-supported single-chamber solid-oxide fuel cell, with NiO + Sm0.2Ce0.8O1.9 anode and Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3−δ + Sm0.2Ce0.8O1.9 cathode, was investigated. The initialization process had significant impact on the observed performance of the fuel cell. The in situ reduction of the anode by a methane–air mixture failed. Although pure methane did reduce the nickel oxide, it also resulted in severe carbon coking over the anode and serious distortion of the fuel cell. In situ initialization by hydrogen led to simultaneous reduction of both the anode and cathode; however, the cell still delivered a maximum power density of ∼350 mW cm−2, attributed to the re-formation of the BSCF phase under the methane–air atmosphere at high temperatures. The ex situ reduction method appeared to be the most promising. The activated fuel cell showed a peak power density of ∼570 mW cm−2 at a furnace temperature of 600 °C, with the main polarization resistance contributed from the electrolyte.  相似文献

Co based catalyst were evaluated for oxygen reduction (ORR) in liquid KOH and alkaline anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AAEMFCs). In liquid KOH solution the catalyst exhibited good performance with an onset potential 120 mV more negative than platinum and a Tafel slope of ca. 120 mV dec−1. The hydrogen peroxide generated, increased from 5 to 50% as the electrode potential decreased from 175 to −300 mV vs. SHE.In an AAEMFC environment, one catalyst (GP2) showed promising performance for ORR, i.e. at 50 mA cm−2 the differences in cell potential between the stable performance for platinum (more positive) and cobalt cathodes with air and oxygen, were only 45 and 67 mV respectively. The second catalyst (GP4) achieved the same stable power density as with platinum, of 200 and 145 mW cm−2, with air at 1 bar (gauge) pressure and air (atm) cathode feed (60 °C), respectively. However the efficiency was lower (i.e. cell voltage was lower) i.e. 40% in comparison to platinum 47.5%.  相似文献

The electrooxidation of dimethoxymethane (DMM) and trimethoxymethane (TMM) was studied at different platinum-based electrocatalysts deposited onto a titanium mesh substrate by thermal decomposition of chloride precursors. Half-cell tests showed an increase in oxidation current for the methoxy fuels at the platinum electrode with the alloying of ruthenium and tin. Increase in reaction temperature and reactant concentration showed an increase in current density for the mesh-based anodes similar to carbon-supported catalysts. Single fuel cell tests, employing the titanium mesh anode with PtRu and PtSn catalysts showed maximum power densities up to 31 mW cm−2 and 48 mW cm−2 for 1.0 mol dm−3 aqueous solutions of DMM and TMM, respectively at 60 °C using oxygen.  相似文献

We demonstrate state-of-the-art room temperature operation of silicon microchannel-based micro-direct methanol fuel cells (μDMFC) having a very high fuel use efficiency of 75.4% operating at an output power density of 9.25 mW cm−2 for an input fuel (3 M aqueous methanol solution) flow rate as low as 0.55 μL min−1. In addition, an output power density of 12.7 mW cm−2 has been observed for a fuel flow rate of 2.76 μL min−1. These results were obtained via the insertion of novel hydrophilic macroporous layer between the standard hydrophobic carbon gas diffusion layer (GDL) and the anode catalyst layer of a μDMFC; the hydrophilic macroporous layer acts to improve mass transport, as a wicking layer for the fuel, enhancing fuel supply to the anode at low flow rates. The results were obtained with the fuel being supplied to the anode catalyst layer via a network of microscopic microchannels etched in a silicon wafer.  相似文献

In this study, the influences of different operational conditions such as cell temperature, sodium hydroxide concentration, oxidant conditions and catalyst loading on the performance of direct borohydride fuel cell which consisted of Pd/C anode, Pt/C cathode and Na+ form Nafion membrane as the electrolyte were investigated. The experimental results showed that the power density increased by increasing the temperature and increasing the flow rate of oxidant. Furthermore, it was found that 20 wt.% of NaOH concentration was optimum for DBFC operation. When oxygen was used as oxidant instead of air, better performance was observed. Experiments also showed that electrochemical performance was not considerably affected by humidification levels. An enhanced power density was found by increasing the loading of anodic catalyst. In the present study, a maximum power density of 27.6 mW cm−2 at a cell voltage of 0.85 V was achieved at 55 mA cm−2 at 60 °C when humidified air was used.  相似文献

This paper shows that the combination of an O2 saturated acidic fluid setup (O2-setup) and a composite of Pd nanoparticles supported on multiwalled-carbon nanotubes (Pd/MWCNTs) as anode catalyst material, results in the improvement of microfluidic fuel cell performance. Microfluidic fuel cells were constructed and evaluated at low HCOOH concentrations (0.1 and 0.5 M) using Pd/V XC-72 and Pd/MWCNTs as anode and Pt/V XC-72 as cathode electrode materials, respectively. The results show a higher power density (2.9 mW cm−2) for this cell when compared to the value reported in the literature that considers a commercial Pd/V XC-72 and 3.3 mW cm−2 using a Pd/MWCNTs with a 50% less Pd loading than that commercial Pd/V XC-72.  相似文献

In a high-concentration direct methanol fuel cell (HC-DMFC), the methanol crossover is typically decreased to an acceptable level by two main mechanisms: high methanol transport resistance between the anode reservoir and the membrane electrode assembly (MEA), and high water back flow from the cathode to the anode. Based on the semi-passive HC-DMFC fabricated in this work, the effects of methanol barrier layer (MBL) thickness and electrolyte membrane thickness on cell performance, methanol and water crossover, and fuel efficiency have been studied. The results showed that a thicker MBL could significantly decrease the methanol and water crossover by increasing the mass transport resistance between the anode reservoir and the MEA, while a thinner Nafion® membrane could also significantly decrease the methanol and water crossover by enhancing the water back flow from the cathode through the electrolyte membrane to the anode. Using Nafion® 212 as the electrolyte membrane, and a 6.4 mm porous PTFE plate as the MBL, a semi-passive HC-DMFC operating at 70 °C produced the maximum power density of 115.8 mW cm−2 when 20 M methanol solution was fed as the fuel.  相似文献

Ammonia-borane (NH3BH3), as a source of protide (H), is initially proposed to release its energy through a fuel cell (direct ammonia-borane fuel cell, DABFC). Cell performance has been elucidated in a 25 cm2 laboratory cell constructed with an oxygen cathode and an ammonia-borane solution fed anode, where the catalyst layers are made of Vulcan XC-72 with 30 wt.% Pt. The potential is 0.6 V at the current density of 24 mA cm−2, corresponding to power density >14 mW cm−2 at room temperature. The direct electron transfer from protide (H) in NH3BH3 to proton (H+) has been further proved by the open circuit potential and the cyclic voltammetry results, which show the possibility of improvement in the performance of DABFC by, for example, exploring new electrode materials.  相似文献

The fuel cell performance (DMFC and H2/air) of highly fluorinated comb-shaped copolymer is reported. The initial performance of membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) fabricated from comb-shaped copolymer containing a side-chain weight fraction of 22% are compared with those derived from Nafion and sulfonated polysulfone (BPSH-35) under DMFC conditions. The low water uptake of comb copolymer enabled an increase in proton exchange site concentrations in the hydrated polymer, which is a desirable membrane property for DMFC application. The comb-shaped copolymer architecture induces phase separated morphology between the hydrophobic fluoroaromatic backbone and the polysulfonic acid side chains. The initial performance of the MEAs using BPSH-35 and Comb 22 copolymer were comparable and higher than that of the Nafion MEA at all methanol concentrations. For example, the power density of the MEA using Comb 22 copolymer at 350 mA cm−2 and 0.5 M methanol was 145 mW cm−2, whereas the power densities of MEAs using BPSH-35 were 136 mW cm−2. The power density of the MEA using Comb 22 copolymer at 350 mA cm−2 and 2.0 M methanol was 144.5 mW cm−2, whereas the power densities of MEAs using BPSH-35 were 143 mW cm−2.  相似文献

The electrochemical performance of anode-supported single-chamber solid oxide fuel cells (SC-SOFCs) with and without SDC-impregnated cathodes was compared in a diluted methane–oxygen mixture. These cells were made of conventional materials including yttrium-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) thin film, a Ni + YSZ anode and a La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSM) cathode. Our results showed that the cell performance was greatly enhanced with the SDC-impregnated LSM cathode. At a furnace temperature of 750 °C, the maximum power density was as high as 404 mW cm−2 for a CH4 to O2 ratio of 2:1, which was 4.0 times higher than the cell with a pure LSM cathode (100 mW cm−2). The overall polarization resistance of the impregnated cell was 1.6 Ω cm2, which was much smaller than that of the non-impregnated one (4.2 Ω cm2). The impregnation introduced SDC nanoparticles greatly extended the electrochemical active zone and hence greatly improved the cell performance.  相似文献
