The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) was studied on carbon dispersed Pt and Pt-Co alloyed nanocatalysts with high contents of Co in H2SO4 and H2SO4/CH3OH solutions. The characterization techniques considered were transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and in situ X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES). The electrochemical activity for the ORR was evaluated from steady state polarization measurements, which were carried out in an ultra thin layer rotating disk electrode. The results showed that with the increase of Co content, the nanoparticle size distributions become sharper and the mean particle diameters become smaller. XRD indicated low degree of alloy formation but significant phase segregation of Co was observed only for Pt-Co/C 1:3 and 1:5 (Pt:Co atomic ratios). The electrochemical measurements indicated that the four-electrons mechanism is mainly followed for the ORR on all materials and the electrocatalytic activities per gram of Pt is higher for the catalysts with higher Co contents. This was explained based on the XANES results which evidenced a decrease of the coverage of oxygenated Pt adsorbates due to the presence of Co. In the methanol-containing electrolyte, the Pt-Co/C 1:5 catalyst showed the highest performance. This was attributed to its low activity for the methanol oxidation due to the smaller probability for presenting three Pt neighboring Pt active sites.  相似文献

Pt-Fe/C catalysts were prepared by a modified polyol synthesis method in an ethylene glycol (EG) solution, and then were heat-treated under H2/Ar (10 vol.%) at moderate temperature (300 °C, Pt-Fe/C300) or high temperature (900 °C, Pt-Fe/C900). As comparison, Pt-Fe/C alloy catalyst was prepared by a two-step method (Pt-Fe/C900B). X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images show that particles size of the catalyst increases with the increase of treatment temperatures. Pt-Fe/C300 catalyst has a mean particle size of 2.8 nm (XRD), 3.6 nm (TEM) and some Pt-Fe alloy was partly formed in this sample. Pt-Fe/C900B catalyst has the biggest particle size of 6.2 nm (XRD) and the best Pt-Fe alloy form. Cyclicvoltammetry (CV) shows that Pt-Fe/C300 has larger electrochemical surface area than other Pt-Fe/C and the highest utilization ratio of 76% among these Pt-based catalysts. Rotating disk electrode (RDE) cathodic curves show that Pt-Fe/C300 has the highest oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) mass activity (MA) and specific activity (SA), as compared with Pt/C catalyst in 1.0 M HClO4. However, Pt-Fe/C catalyst does not appears to be a more active catalyst than Pt/C for ORR in 1.0 M HClO4 + 0.1 M CH3OH. Pt-Fe/C300 exhibits higher ORR activity and better performance than other Pt-Fe/C or Pt/C catalysts when employed for cathode in direct methanol single cell test, the enhancement of the cell performance is logically attributed to its higher ORR activity, which is probably attributed to more Pt0 species existing and Fe ion corrosion from the catalyst.  相似文献

Pt/TiOx/C nanocomposites have been synthesized by depositing hydrated titanium oxide on carbon-supported Pt (Pt/C), reducing H2PtCl6 with sodium formate on carbon-supported hydrated titanium oxide (TiO2/C), and simultaneously depositing hydrated titanium oxide and reducing H2PtCl6 with formate on carbon support, followed by heat treatment at 500 and 900 °C in 90% Ar-10% H2 mixture. The catalytic activity for oxygen reduction was evaluated in half cells with sulfuric acid electrolyte and in single direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC). Tolerance to methanol was studied with half cells containing sulfuric acid mixed with methanol. Charge transfer resistance and electrochemical active surface area of the Pt/TiOx/C catalysts were studied with impedance and cyclic voltammetry measurements. Both the synthesis methods and heat treatments influence the catalytic activity, and some of the Pt/TiOx/C composites exhibit higher catalytic activity than Pt/C. The Pt/TiOx/C catalysts also exhibit better methanol tolerance than Pt/C. The mechanism for the enhanced catalytic activity of Pt/TiOx/C is discussed.  相似文献

Pt45Ru45M10/C (M = Fe, Co, and Ni) catalysts were synthesized and physical and electrochemical properties were analyzed by XRD, TEM, CO stripping and methanol electro-oxidation activity measurement. Among these catalysts, the Pt45Ru45Fe10/C catalyst exhibited the highest mass activity of 2.6 A/g catal. while those of the Pt45Ru45Co10/C and Pt45Ru45Ni10/C catalysts were 2.2 and 2.5 A/g catal., respectively. In the case of specific activity, the catalysts exhibited much higher activities of 110 (130%), 120 (140%) and 150 (170%) mA/m2 for the Fe, Co and Ni incorporated catalysts, respectively, than 88 mA/m2 of a commercial PtRu/C catalyst.  相似文献

A new procedure has been introduced to enhance catalytic activity of ruthenium-selenium electro-catalysts for oxygen reduction, in which materials are treated under hydrogen atmosphere at elevated temperatures. The characterisation using scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy or energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy exhibited that the treatment at 400 °C made catalysts denser while their porous nature remained, led to a good degree of crystallinity and an optimum Se:Ru ratio. The half cell test confirms feasibility of the new procedure; the catalyst treated at 400 °C gave the highest reduction current (55.9 mA cm−2 at −0.4 V) and a low methanol oxidation effect coefficient (3.8%). The direct methanol fuel cell with the RuSe 400 °C cathode catalyst (2 mg RuSe cm−2) generated a power density of 33.8 mW cm−2 using 2 M methanol and 2 bar oxygen at 90 °C. The new procedure produced the catalysts with low decay rates. The best sample was compared to the Pt and to the reported ruthenium-selenium catalyst. Possible reasons for the observations are discussed.  相似文献

The mechanism of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in a naturally aerated stagnant 0.5 M H2SO4 was studied using electrochemical methods. The cathodic polarization curve showed three different regions; electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurement was used accordingly. The EIS data were analyzed, and the mechanism for the ORR was proposed consequently. The three regions include a limiting current density region with the main transfer of 4e controlled by diffusion (−0.50 V < E < −0.40 V), a combined kinetic-diffusion region (−0.40 V < E < −0.20 V) with an additional 2e transfer due to the adsorption of the anions, and a hump phenomenon region (−0.20 V < E < −0.05 V), in which the chemical redox between the anodic intermediate and the cathodic intermediate , together with the electrochemical reaction, synergistically results in the acceleration of the ORR. Therefore, a coupled electrochemical/chemical process (the EC mechanism) in the hump phenomenon region was proposed, and a good agreement was found between the experimental and fitted results. The EC mechanism was confirmed by the deaerated experiments.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of CoSe2/C nanoparticle loading rate on oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity and H2O2 production using the rotating disk electrode and the rotating ring-disk electrode techniques. We prepared carbon-supported CoSe2 nanoparticles with different nominal loading rates and evaluated these samples by means of powder X-ray diffraction. All the catalysts had an OCP value of 0.81 V vs. RHE. H2O2 production during the ORR process decreased with an increase in catalytic layer thickness. This decrease was related to the CoSe2 loading on the disk electrode. H2O2 production also decreased with increasing catalytic site density, a phenomenon related to the CoSe2 loading rate on the carbon substrate. The cathodic current density significantly increased with increasing catalytic layer thickness, but decreased with increasing catalytic site density. In the case of 20 wt% CoSe2/C nanoparticles at 22 μg cm−2, we determined that the transfer process involves about 3.5 electrons.  相似文献

The kinetics of oxygen electroreduction have been studied on a smooth platinum electrode coated with Nafion® in concentrated 85% H3PO4. The effects of Nafion® coatings of different thickness on O2 electroreduction at a smooth Pt rotating disk electrode with 85% phosphoric acid as the bulk electrolyte were examined. The kinetic current increases with increasing Nafion® film thickness while the diffusion limiting current decreases with increasing Nafion® film thickness. A O2 concentration profile model for the Pt/Nafion®/bulk electrolyte has been established, and this model can be used to explain the O2 reduction polarization results. The performance of Nafion®-modified, high surface area Pt/carbon air cathodes for use in the H2–air concentrated phosphoric acid fuel cell was also studied.  相似文献

The kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) were examined on a series of Pt100−xyNixPdy ternary alloys. Films were produced by electrodeposition that involved a combination of underpotential and overpotential reactions. For Pt-rich Pt100−xyNixPdy alloy films (x < 0.65) Ni co-deposition occurred at underpotentials while for Ni-rich films (x > 0.65) deposition proceeded at overpotentials. Rotating disk electrode (RDE) measurements of the ORR kinetics on Ni-rich Pt100−xyNixPdy thin films revealed up to ∼6.5-fold enhancement of the catalytic activity relative to Pt films with the same Pt mass loading. More than half of the electrocatalytic gain may be attributed to surface area expansion due to Ni dealloying. Surface area normalization based on the Hupd charge reduced the enhancement factor to a value less than 2. The most active ternary alloy film for ORR was Pt25Ni73Pd2. Comparison of the ORR on Pt, Pt20Ni80, Pt25Ni73Pd2 thin films indicate that the binary alloy is the most active with a Hupd normalized ORR enhancement factor of up to 3.0 compared to 1.6 for the ternary alloy.  相似文献

Polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy experiments were performed on a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) incorporating the heteropoly acids (HPAs) phosphomolybdic acid, H3PMo12O40, (HPMo) or phosphotungstic acid, H3PW12O40, (HPW) in the anode Pt/C catalyst layer. Both HPW-Pt and HPMo-Pt showed higher performance than the Pt control at 30 psig of backpressure and at ambient pressure. Anodic polarizations were also performed, and Tafel slopes were extracted from the data between 0.25 V and 0.5 V. At 30 psig, Tafel slopes of 133 mV/dec, 146 mV/dec, and 161 mV/dec were found for HPW-Pt, HPMo-Pt and the Pt control, respectively. At 0 psig, the Tafel slopes were 172 mV/dec, 178 mV/dec, and 188 mV/dec for HPW-Pt, HPMo-Pt and the Pt control. An equivalent circuit model, which incorporated constant phase elements (CPEs), was used to model the impedance data. From the impedance model it was found that the incorporation of HPAs into the catalyst layer resulted in a reduction in the resistances to charge transfer. This shows that these two heteropoly acids do act as co-catalysts with platinum for methanol electrooxidation.  相似文献

The cyclic voltammograms (CVs) and current-time curves of methanol electro-oxidation, assisted by K2FeO4, decomposed K2FeO4 and Fe(NO3)3 added in strong alkaline solution, were investigated on a Pt electrode. The results show that Fe(NO3)3 and K2FeO4, especially decomposed K2FeO4, can promote the activity and poisoning tolerance of a Pt electrocatalyst for methanol oxidation in alkaline solution. We propose that iron(III)-containing compounds such as Fe(OH)3 and FeOOH in a strong alkaline solution tend to encourage the formation of OH adsorption (OHads) species, which are necessary for the promotion of the CO-like intermediates of oxidation on the Pt electrode.  相似文献

Free acids of the iron substituted heteropoly acids (HPA), H7[(P2W17O61)FeIII(H2O)] (HFe1) and H18[(P2W15O56)2FeIII2(H2O)2] (HFe2) were prepared from the salts K7[(P2W17O61)FeIII(H2O)] (KFe1) and Na12[(P2W15O56)2FeIII4(H2O)2] (NaFe4), respectively. The iron-substituted HPA were adsorbed on to XC-72 carbon based GDLs to form HPA doped GDEs after water washing with HPA loadings of ca. 1 μmol. The HPA was detected throughout the GDL by EDX. Solution electrochemistry of the free acids are reported for the first time in sulfate buffer, pH 1-3. The hydrogen oxidation reaction was catalyzed by KFe1 at 0.33 V, with an exchange current density of 38 mA/cm2. Moderate activity for the oxygen reduction reaction was observed for the iron substituted HPA, which was dramatically improved by selectively removing oxygen atoms from the HPA by cycling the fuel cell cathode under N2 followed by reoxidation to give a restructured oxide catalyst. The nanostructured oxide achieved an OCV of 0.7 V with a Tafel slope of 115 mV/decade. Cycling the same catalysts in oxygen resulted in an improved catalyst/ionomer/carbon configuration with a slightly higher Tafel slope, 128 mV/decade but a respectable current density of 100 mA/cm2 at 0.2 V.  相似文献

In the search for active cathode catalysts for polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) using inexpensive materials, several valve metal oxide electrodes, TiOx, ZrOx, and TaOx, with corresponding binary oxide electrodes were selected for the evaluation of catalytic activity for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) by means of cyclic voltammetry in 0.1 M HClO4 at 60 °C. These oxide electrodes were prepared mainly by the dip-coating method on a titanium plate substrate at a temperature between 400 °C and 500 °C and were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Among the oxide-coated electrodes investigated, Ti0.7Zr0.3Ox/Ti provided the highest ORR specific activity, with an onset potential, EORR, of 0.86 V vs. RHE during the cathodic potential sweep. Fine TaOx particles prepared as an extension of the dip-coating method, showed very high catalytic activity determined by means of hydrodynamic voltammetry in 0.1 M HClO4 at 30 °C with an EORR of 0.90 V vs. RHE.  相似文献

LaNi0.9Ru0.1O3 as cathode catalyst for a direct borohydride fuel cell (DBFC) was synthesized and investigated for the first time. The electrochemical experiments indicated that perovskite-type oxide LaNi0.9Ru0.1O3 exhibited higher electrochemical performance compared with LaNiO3, which suggested incorporation of element Ru into LaNiO3 could further improve the catalytic ability for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline solution. LaNi0.9Ru0.1O3 catalyst was found to have good tolerance of BH4. Meanwhile the maximum power density of 171 mW cm−2 was obtained at 65 °C without using any precious ion exchange membrane. A life test indicated that the DBFC displayed no significant degradation for about 70 h testing. The electrochemical data suggested that LaNi0.9Ru0.1O3, which provided a simple way to construct DBFCs without using any ion exchange membrane, might be promising cathode catalyst with high performance and low cost for DBFCs.  相似文献

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) modified with iron tetramethoyxphenyl-porphyrin chloride (FeTMPP-Cl) and heat treated are active towards electrocatalytic oxygen reduction in acidic media. The activity slightly depends on the heat treatment temperature (850 < 550 °C) and the amount of porphyrin deposited onto the nanotubes before the heat treatment step. In comparison with as-received MWCNTs no increase in activity has been found with iron phenanthroline or iron acetate impregnated and heat treated MWCNTs. When MWCNTs are pretreated in an oxidation step using HNO3, there is only a slight increase in activity after FeTMPP-Cl modification and heat treatment compared to the not pretreated MWCNTs. The HNO3 treatment itself, however, leads to an increase in activity of the unmodified MWCNTs. TEM-measurements revealed an amorphous layer surrounding the MWCNTs after HNO3 treatment, while XPS showed an increased amount of oxygen functional groups. It is suggested that there are different kinds of active sites at the catalyst surface, the first ones consisting of oxygen functionalities or other entities introduced by the HNO3 treatment, and the second ones containing nitrogen (and probably iron) introduced via the porphyrin. Pyridine-type nitrogen has been found by XPS after heat treatment at both temperatures, indicating that the active sites are already formed at 550 °C.  相似文献

This work studies the heat treatment effect of carbon-dispersed platinum and platinum-vanadium alloys on the kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in acid medium. The catalyst powders were subjected to heat treatments at three temperatures for 1 h. The electronic and structural features of the materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and in situ X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES). The XANES results for the oxidized state composites showed an increase of the Pt 5d band occupancy with increased heat treatment temperature for the Pt/C catalyst, while no changes were noted for Pt-V/C for the same treatments. The electrochemical characteristics for the ORR were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and state-state polarization measurements. The results showed that the ORR takes place by the multi-electronic charge transfer process, following a four electron mechanism. The kinetics of the ORR was evaluated using Tafel diagrams. It was observed that the ORR activity of the Pt/C and Pt-V/C is enhanced with the increase of the heat treatment temperature. The catalytic activity of the materials was analyzed in terms of the electronic and structural properties of Pt in the metallic particles.  相似文献

Sulfated zirconia supported on multi-walled carbon nanotubes as new supports of Pt catalyst (Pt–S-ZrO2/MWCNT) was synthesized with aims to enhance electron and proton conductivity and also catalytic activity of Pt electrocatalyst in terms of larger concentrations of ionizable OH groups on surfaces. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis shows that the sample surfaces were modified with sulfate. Transmission electron microscopy results show that the Pt and sulfated ZrO2 particles dispersed relatively uniformly on the surface of the multi-walled carbon nanotube. X-ray diffraction shows that S-ZrO2 and Pt coexist in the Pt–S-ZrO2/MWCNT composites and S-ZrO2 has no effect on the crystalline lattice of Pt. Pt–S-ZrO2/MWCNT catalyst was evaluated in terms of the electrochemical activity for methanol electro-oxidation using cyclic voltammetry, steady-state polarization experiments and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy technique at room temperature. Pt–S-ZrO2/MWCNT catalyst show higher catalytic activity for methanol electro-oxidation compared with Pt catalyst on non-sulfated ZrO2/MWCNT support and commercial Pt/C (E-TEK).  相似文献

Carbon-supported Pt and Pt3Co catalysts with a mean crystallite size of 2.5 nm were prepared by a colloidal procedure followed by a carbothermal reduction. The catalysts with same particle size were investigated for the oxygen reduction in a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) to ascertain the effect of composition. The electrochemical investigations were carried out in a temperature range from 40 to 80 °C and the methanol concentration feed was varied in the range 1-10 mol dm−3 to evaluate the cathode performance in the presence of different conditions of methanol crossover. Despite the good performance of the Pt3Co catalyst for the oxygen reduction, it appeared less performing than the Pt catalyst of the same particle size for the cathodic process in the presence of significant methanol crossover. Cyclic voltammetry analysis indicated that the Pt3Co catalyst has a lower overpotential for methanol oxidation than the Pt catalyst, and thus a lower methanol tolerance. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis showed that the charge transfer resistance for the oxygen reduction reaction dominated the overall DMFC response in the presence of high methanol concentrations fed to the anode. This effect was more significant for the Pt3Co/KB catalyst, confirming the lower methanol tolerance of this catalyst compared to Pt/KB. Such properties were interpreted as the result of the enhanced metallic character of Pt in the Pt3Co catalyst due to an intra-alloy electron transfer from Co to Pt, and to the adsorption of oxygen species on the more electropositive element (Co) that promotes methanol oxidation according to the bifunctional theory.  相似文献

A systematic mechanistic study of NO storage and reduction over Pt/Al2O3 and Pt/BaO/Al2O3 is carried out using Temporal Analysis of Products (TAP). NO pulse and NO/H2 pump-probe experiments at 350 °C on pre-reduced, pre-oxidized, and pre-nitrated catalysts reveal the complex interplay between storage and reduction chemistries and the importance of the Pt/Ba coupling. NO pulsing experiments on both catalysts show that NO decomposes to major product N2 on clean Pt but the rate declines as oxygen accumulates on the Pt. The storage of NO over Pt/BaO/Al2O3 is an order of magnitude higher than on Pt/Al2O3 showing participation of Ba in the storage even in the absence of gas phase O2. Either oxygen spillover or transient NO oxidation to NO2 is postulated as the first steps for NO storage on Pt/BaO/Al2O3. The storage on Pt/Ba/Al2O3 commences as soon as Pt–O species are formed. Post-storage H2 reduction provides evidence that a fraction of NO is not stored in close proximity to Pt and is more difficult to reduce. A closely coupled Pt/Ba interfacial process is corroborated by NO/H2 pump-probe experiments. NO conversion to N2 by decomposition is sustained on clean Pt using excess H2 pump-probe feeds. With excess NO pump-probe feeds NO is converted to N2 and N2O via the sequence of barium nitrate and NO decomposition. Pump-probe experiments with pre-oxidized or pre-nitrated catalyst show that N2 production occurs by the decomposition of NO supplied in a NO pulse or from the decomposition of NOx stored on the Ba. The transient evolution of the two pathways depends on the extent of pre-nitration and the NO/H2 feed ratio.  相似文献

Hollow carbon spheres (HCSs) were prepared through a simple hydrothermal method using silica particles and glucose as the template and carbon precursor, respectively. HCSs used as supports for platinum catalysts deposited with cerium oxide (CeO2) were prepared for application as anode catalysts in direct methanol fuel cells. The composition and structure of the samples were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The electrocatalytic properties of the as-prepared catalysts for methanol oxidation were investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV). The Pt/CeO2/HCSs catalyst heated at 550 °C for 1 h exhibited the best catalytic activity for methanol oxidation.  相似文献
