Tractor driving imposes a lot of physical and mental stress upon the operator. If the operator's seat is not comfortable, his work performance may be poor and there is also a possibility of accidents. The optimal design of tractor seat may be achieved by integrating anthropometric data with other technical features of the design. This paper reviews the existing information on the tractor seat design that considers anthropometry and biomechanical factors and gives an approach for seat design based on anthropometric data. The anthropometric dimensions, i.e. popliteal height sitting (5th percentile), hip breadth sitting (95th percentile), buttock popliteal length (5th percentile), interscye breadth (5th and 95th percentile) and sitting acromion height (5th percentile) of agricultural workers need to be taken into consideration for design of seat height, seat pan width, seat pan length, seat backrest width and seat backrest height, respectively, of a tractor. The seat dimensions recommended for tractor operator's comfort based on anthropometric data of 5434 Indian male agricultural workers were as follows: seat height of 380 mm, seat pan width of 420–450 mm, seat backrest width of 380–400 mm (bottom) and 270–290 mm (top), seat pan length of 370±10 mm, seat pan tilt of 5–7° backward and seat backrest height of 350 mm.

Relevance to industry

The approach presented in this paper for tractor seat design based on anthropometric considerations will help the tractor seat designers to develop and introduce seats suiting to the requirements of the user population. This will not only enhance the comfort of the tractor operators but may also help to reduce the occupational health problems of tractor operators.  相似文献

This article presents sitting anthropometry data for Malaysians focusing on seat fit parameters. It offers additional data regarding seat design requirements as there have been only a few efforts made to establish anthropometry data in Malaysia. An analysis using a measurement composed of 16 common and important dimensions in seat design was done with 216 subjects. Data collection was done by using direct measuring methods with standard equipment. Malaysian automobile seat fit parameters, namely backrest width, backrest height, cushion width, and cushion length were established from collected anthropometric dimensions: interscye breadth (5th percentile female and 95th percentile male), sitting shoulder height (5th percentile female), hip breadth (95th percentile female), and buttock–popliteal length (5th percentile female), respectively. From the data collected, this study finds that the fit parameter dimensions are bigger than other Asians' 95th percentile values but smaller than the Filipino and the Thai data being compared in this study. The female 5th percentile values for cushion length and cushion width are the smallest. In addition, two local automobile seats were measured and compared with the data. It was observed that the cushion lengths of both seats were too long for the 5th percentile female of the current data. This study provides seat fit parameters–the most fundamental part of automotive seat design, especially for the Malaysian population. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

A biomechanical model is important for prediction of loads likely to arise in specific body parts under various conditions. The biomechanical model was developed to predict compressive and shear loads at L4/L5 (lumbar vertebra) of a tractor operator seating on seats with selected seat pan and backrest cushion materials. A computer program was written to solve the model for various inputs viz. stature and weight of the tractor operators, choice of operating conditions, and reaction forces from seat pan and backrest cushions. It was observed that maximum compressive and shear forces ranged 943–1367 N and 422–991 N, respectively at L4/L5 of tractor operators steering the tractor with leg and hand control actions and occasionally viewing the implement at back. The compressive forces were maximum (1202–1367 N) with coir based composite seat backrest cushion materials (thickness of 80 mm, density of 47.19 kg/m3) and were minimum (943–1108 N) with high density polyurethane foam (thickness of 44 mm, density of 19.09 kg/m3) for the seats.Relevance to industryThe biomechanical model of a tractor operator is important for theoretical understanding the problem of sitting and is also valuable in prediction of compressive and shear loads at L4/L5 of operator under various operating conditions. Automobile seat greatly affects the ride comfort of drivers in a prolonged driving. Not only the layout parameters of automobile seats, such as seat height, cushion inclination angle, backrest inclination angle, etc, but also the backrest surface related with lumbar support all affect the seating comfort. The human body-seat system includes the three-dimensional data of body based on anatomy and anthropometry, three-dimensional data of seat and adjustable assembly interaction between body and seat based on human body kinematics. Body height and driving posture are adjusted in POSER software, then the solid model of human skin, skeleton and muscle are created in ANSA software, and the integrated model of body-seat system is created in ABAQUS software. The adjustment of the lumbar support parameters is achieved by setting boundary condition of lumbar support region of seats. The finite element model of human body-seat system is validated by comparison to available literature results. At last the finite element model is applied to analyze the effect of lumbar support parameters of seats on the interaction between body and seat under the action of gravity. The pressure value and distribution, contact area, total force of backrest and intervertebral disc stress are obtained. The result shows that the optimal thickness of seat's lumbar support size for the seating comfort is 10 mm after comprehensive comparison and evaluation.Relevance to industry: This study investigated the effects of lumbar support on seating comfort, and can be used to protect the lumbar health. The modeling and simulation method can be applied for the optimization design of vehicle seats.  相似文献

The perception of vehicle ride comfort is influenced by the dynamic performance of full-depth foam used in many vehicle seats. The effects of the thickness of foam on the dynamic stiffness (i.e., stiffness and damping as a function of frequency) of foam cushions with three thicknesses (60, 80, and 100 mm), and the vibration transmitted through these cushions at the seat pan and the backrest were measured with 12 subjects (6 males and 6 females). With increasing thickness, the stiffness and the damping of the foam decreased. With increasing thickness of foam at the seat pan, the resonance frequencies around 4 Hz in the vertical in-line and fore-and-aft cross-axis transmissibilities of the seat pan cushion and the backrest cushion decreased. For the conditions investigated, it is concluded that the thickness of foam at a vertical backrest has little effect on the vertical in-line or fore-and-aft cross-axis transmissibilities of the foam at either the seat pan or the backrest. The frequencies of the primary resonances around 4 Hz in the vertical in-line transmissibility and the fore-and-aft cross-axis transmissibility of foam at the seat pan were highly correlated. Compared to sitting on a rigid seat pan with a foam backrest, sitting with foam at both the seat pan and the backrest reduced the resonance frequency in the vertical in-line transmissibility of the backrest foam and increased the associated transmissibility at resonance, while the fore-and-aft cross-axis transmissibility of the backrest was little affected. Compared to sitting without a backrest, sitting with a rigid vertical backrest increased the resonance frequency of the fore-and-aft cross-axis transmissibility of the seat pan cushion and increased the transmissibility at resonance.Relevance to industryThe transmissibility of a seat is determined by the dynamic properties of the occupant of the seat and the dynamic properties of the seat. This study shows how the thicknesses of foam at a seat pan and foam at a backrest affect the in-line and cross-axis transmissibilities of the foams at the seat pan and the backrest. The findings have application to the design of vehicle seats to minimise the transmission of vibration to the body.  相似文献

The appropriate design of tools, equipment and accessories for human body sizes, while meeting the social, cultural, economic and psychological needs of people, provides maximum benefit. This is crucial for students who spend most of their time using school furniture. The aim of the study is to investigate the mismatch between school furniture dimensions and students’ anthropometric measures. Nine anthropometric measures were taken of 225 students (68 female and 157 male) from nine departments of an engineering faculty using a specially designed measurement tool. The mismatch percentages between the existing classroom furniture dimensions and the anthropometric measures were determined using some well-known criterion equations. The results indicated a considerable mismatch: 44.45% for seat height, 100% for seat depth, and 21.28% for desk height. Two types of proposed classroom furniture achieved much higher percentage matches. The match percentages were above 70% for four dimensions for type A and above 95%, except for seat height and width of backrest, for all of the dimensions for both types.Relevance to industryThis study helps in establishing and motivating necessary further studies in classroom ergonomics in university settings.  相似文献

The human–seat interfaces were analyzed to determine the differential distribution of the body weight to the components of seat. Fifteen volunteers were tested on a simulated seat system with two piezoelectric force platforms, one placed as chair seat pan and the other placed on the floor surface as footrest. The seated configurations included back inclines (75° and 80°), upright (90°) and reclines (95°, 105° and 115°), absence or presence of armrest (adjusted at 62–68 cm of height), forward and backward sloping of the seat pan, and supported and unsupported back. The armrest and backrest assemblies were isolated from the force platforms. The difference in the body weight (kgf) to the sum of forces recorded at seat pan and feet yielded the extent of weight transferred to other features (e.g., backrest and armrest). The weight distributed at seat was 10–12% less at back inclines (p<0.01) as compared to upright unsupported sitting. With the backrest reclined beyond 95°, the weight at seat gradually decreased by 9% at 115° recline. The load distributed at feet varied narrowly; however, it was significantly greater (p<0.01) at upright supported back, compared to unsupported back. The height of the armrest was optimized at 68 cm, since the weight distribution at seat pan consistently reduced by 12% at that height, as compared to the absence of armrest (F(4,524)=8.80, p<0.05). The suggested height of the armrest corresponded to 40% of the body stature of the selected volunteers. The load distributed at feet was 18% greater with the presence of armrest, indicating that a part of the weight of the upper leg fell on the seat pan, when the armrest was absent. The weight fell on the seat in slouch posture was 5% less than in upright sitting, while the weight at feet was marginally higher in slouch than in upright posture. The study maintained that the horizontal as well as 5° forward slope of the seat might be the preferred choice, since the load distributed at seat was highest at backward sloping seat for all conditions of supported and unsupported back. The study reaffirms that the backrest and armrest have conjoint influence in reducing the load distributed at seat, which in turn might help in mitigating stress on the spinal and other paraspinal structures.

Relevance to Industry

The human–seat interface analysis and understanding of body weight distribution to the components of seat may be beneficial for ergo-design application in optimizing parameters for chair configurations that provide comfort and safety to the user.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to investigate the magnitude of spinal shrinkage during video display unit (VDU) work when subjects were sitting on chairs with different design with forward-sloping seats with or without backrest, armrest or knee support and when using a conventional chair with horizontal seat. Three different chairs were investigated: A “Conventional chair” with horizontal seat, B “Ullman chair” with front half of seat sloping forward and back half horizontal, and C “Balans chair” with forward-sloping seat plus knee support. Eight healthy subjects used to professional VDU work volunteered to participate in this field study, which was performed at their own workplaces. The median shrinkage after a three-hour period was 1.3, 1.8 and 3.1 mm for chairs A, B and C, respectively. All subjects shrank more (p < 0.05) when sitting on the chair with knee support (C) than when sitting on the conventional chair. There was no statistically significant difference in shrinkage between chairs A and B, or between chairs B and C.  相似文献

Sixty six physically handicapped children between the ages of 5 and 16 took part in an anthropometric study of young wheelchair users. All those involved had at one time used a wheelchair regularly, and only 9 in the study habitually walked. Using a standard body measuring instrument, 13 measurements of bodily dimensions were taken with the children sitting in their usual chairs. An assessment was also made of the degree of support afforded by the backrest. Five dimensions normally used in prescribing wheelchairs to patients were used as a basis for working out the sizes of the various sections of a wheelchair, such as seat, backrest, armrest and frame size. The raw data indicated that appreciable inconsistencies in body shape existed which were not allowed for in present wheelchair design. A new approach is proposed in which wheelchairs would be assembled from interlocking sections of variable size . This arrangement would allow wheelchairs to be fitted more completely to the individual.  相似文献

The study evaluated the potential mismatch between classroom furniture dimensions and anthropometric characteristics of 978 Iranian high school students (498 girls, 480 boys), aged 15-18 years. Nine anthropometric measurements (stature, sitting height, sitting shoulder height, popliteal height, hip breadth, elbow-seat height, buttock-popliteal length, buttock-knee length and thigh clearance) and five dimensions from the existing classroom furniture were measured and then compared together (using match criterion equations) to identify any potential mismatch between them. The results indicated a considerable mismatch between body dimensions of the students and the existing classroom furniture, with seat height (60.9%), seat width (54.7%) and desktop height (51.7%) being the furniture dimensions with a higher level of mismatch. The levels of mismatch varied between the high-school grade levels and between genders, indicating their special requirements and possible problems. The proposed dimensions of the classroom furniture more appropriate for the students were given. This additional information on students' anthropometry can be used by local furniture industries as a starting point for designing more appropriate furniture for school children, or used by schools to aid in furniture selection.  相似文献

A subjective assessment of fork-lift truck seats has been carried out to assess the range of preferred seat dimensions and the acceptability of different seat adjustments to fork-lift truck drivers. Twelve fork-lift truck seats fitted to a fixed bench were assessed by twelve fork-lift truck drivers. For each seat, each driver completed a questionnaire that covered the following areas: eleven seat dimensions, four seat adjustments and other features (arm rests, safety belts and safety wings). The drivers assessed the dimensions of a seat chosen at random, before moving to the adjacent seat in either a clockwise or anticlockwise direction. Before each assessment, they were asked to look forward and backward in the seat as though they were driving a fork-lift truck. In general, significant correlations were obtained between the subjective assessments and objective measurements of the seat dimensions. This enabled preferred seat dimension ranges to be defined. Fork-lift truck drivers ranked the forward-backward and the backrest inclination adjustments as most important. The results showed that although the drivers had previous experience in the use of suspension seats, they did not understand the purpose of the weight adjustment. All adjustments should be easy to find, accessible, easy to move and they should enable a range of adjustments. In addition, clear and simple information on the seat is needed, especially for the weight adjustment. The most recently designed seats generally had dimensions within the preferred ranges compared with the older generation seats, mainly because they had more adjustments. However, the results show that adjustments on fork-lift truck seats could be improved further. Some tentative conclusions are made for the preferred fork-lift truck seat dimensions and adjustment ranges which are based on the evidence from this restricted sample of fork-lift truck drivers. They may be useful for seat and truck designers in the preparation of a standard on fork-lift truck seat dimensions.  相似文献

Automobile seat design specifications cannot be established without considering the comfort expectations of the target population. This contention is supported by published literature, which suggests that ergonomics criteria, particularly those related to physiology, do not satisfy consumer comfort. The objective of this paper is to challenge ergonomics criteria related to anthropometry in the same way. In this context, 12 subjects, representing a broad range of body sizes, evaluated five different compact car seats during a short-term seating session. Portions of a reliable and valid survey were used for this purpose. The contour and geometry characteristics of the five seats were quantified and compared to the survey information. Discrepancies were discovered between published anthropometric accommodation criteria and subject-preferred lumbar height, seatback width, cushion length, and cushion width. Based on this finding, it was concluded that automobile seat comfort is a unique science. Ergonomics criteria, while serving as the basis for this science, cannot be applied blindly for they do not ensure comfortable automobile seats.  相似文献

This study aimed at comparing primary school students' anthropometry to the dimensions of school furniture and determining whether the furniture used matches the students' anthropometry. A sample of 600 male students, whose ages were between 6 and 11 years, from five primary schools in the Gaza Strip governorates participated in the study. Several students' body dimensions were measured. The dimensions measured included elbow–seat height, shoulder height, knee height, popliteal height and buttock–popliteal length. Measurements of the dimensions of the classroom furniture indicated that there was a considerable mismatch between the students' body dimensions and the classroom furniture. The mismatches in seat height, seat depth and desk height occurred for 99% of the students, while the mismatch for the back rest height was only 35%. Two design specifications were proposed in order to decrease the mismatch percentage based on the data obtained. The two proposed designs showed a considerable improvement in the match percentages as compared to the existing design.

Statement of Relevance: Having identified mismatches between the dimensions of the school furniture used in primary schools in the Gaza Strip, two new design specifications are proposed and shown to improve match with the students' anthropometric dimensions. The findings of the study are also an important addition to local knowledge on school children's anthropometry.  相似文献

Families in the Western world have a car and several family members share the same car. In this study, 154 participants have adjusted a driver's seat three times. The primary objective was to study intrapersonal repeatability and intraclass correlation (ICC) on seat; length adjustment, backrest angle, seat front edge and seat rear edge adjustment, related to participant age, sex, stature and weight. Length adjustment has the best intrapersonal repeatability within two repetitions, 49 mm and ICC-value 0.87. Females and younger participants (age <40 years) adjust seats generally more accurately. Females adjust the seat 41 mm more forward, 120 mm compared to men 79 mm counted from 0-starting position. Females sit with more upright seat backrests, 46° compared to 43° for males counted from 0-starting position. Females sit higher than males in both the frontal and rear part of the seat cushion.  相似文献

Match between school furniture dimensions and children's anthropometry   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
The purpose of the study was to examine whether school furniture dimensions match children's anthropometry. Children aged 6-18 years (n=274), divided into 3 groups on the basis of the used furniture size, were subjected into anthropometric measurements (shoulder, elbow, knee and popliteal height, buttock-popliteal length and hip breadth). Combinational equations defined the acceptable furniture dimensions according to anthropometry and match percentages were computed, according to either the existing situation--where children use the size assigned for their grade--or assuming that they could use the most appropriate of the sizes available. Desk and seat height were bigger than the accepted limits for most children (81.8% and 71.5%, respectively), while seat depth was appropriate for only 38.7% of children. In conclusion, the assumption that children could use the most appropriate yet available size significantly improved the match, indicating that the limited provision of one size per cluster of grades does not accommodate the variability of anthropometry even among children of the same age.  相似文献

The efficacy of a newly designed dynamic armrest was evaluated during joystick operation of a typical North American hydraulic-actuation joystick. The dynamic design was evaluated against a stationary armrest condition as well as no armrest condition. Electromyography (EMG) and subjective measurements were used to make the evaluation. The dynamic armrest, which mimics the natural pendulation of a joystick operator's arm in the forward and backward directions, was shown to significantly decrease the muscular activation in the upper trapezius, posterior deltoid, and anterior deltoid (p ≤ 0.01) over a stationary armrest. A questionnaire revealed that subjects significantly (p = 0.01) preferred the dynamic armrest design over either a standard armrest or no armrest with 17 of 21 operators preferring the dynamic armrest. Ratings from the questionnaire indicated that subjects felt that the dynamic armrest required less effort, was more comfortable, and was more effective than either of the other two armrest conditions.  相似文献

The dimensions of pilot seats from five different types of civil aircraft were measured and the results compared with existing standards and biomechanical criteria. It was apparent that these seats failed to meet requirements, particularly in the effective depth and inclination of the seat and in the height of the lumbar support and the armrests. Hence, none of these seats made it possible for the pilot to establish a comfortable sitting posture. In comparison with aviation standards, the anthropometric dimensions were not satisfactory, meeting only 4-7 out of 10 requirements. The dimensions based on biomechanics were even less satisfactory, meeting only between 1 and 3 requirements out of 7.  相似文献

Children spend about five hours per day sitting down while doing their school work. Considering this as well as the potential inadequate use of school furniture, it is likely that some anatomical-functional changes and problems in the learning process may occur. The aim of this study was to compare furniture sizes within three different schools with the anthropometric characteristics of Chilean students in the Valparaíso region, in order to evaluate the potential mismatch between them. The sample consisted of 195 volunteer students (94 male, 101 female) of the 8th grade, ranging from 12.5 to 14.5 years of age from 3 different schools. Regarding the methodology, 6 anthropometric measures (Stature, Popliteal height, Buttock-popliteal length, Elbow height while sitting, Hip width, Thigh thickness and Subscapular height) were gathered, as well as 8 dimensions from the school furniture. For the evaluation of classroom furniture a match criterion equation was defined. After considering the existing classroom furniture dimensions in each match criterion equation, the anthropometric characteristics of the considered population were compared in order to determine the mismatch between them. Results indicated that seat height, which should be considered as the starting point for the design of classroom furniture, was appropriate for students' popliteal height in only 14% of the 2 out of the 3 schools, and 28% in the third. Seat to desk height was too high and mismatched 99% of the students in one school and 100% in the others. Therefore, it was possible to conclude that the classroom's furniture was inadequate in almost all the analyzed cases and subjects. It is possible that the high mismatch percentage found between furniture and students' anthropometry can be associated to the fact that the acquisition and selection of the furniture was made without any ergonomic concern or criteria.  相似文献

A newly developed work seat for industrial sewing operations was compared with a traditional sewing work seat to evaluate the effectiveness of design features. The new seat was designed with special seat-pan and backrest features to accommodate the musculoskeletal geometry of a low sit-stand posture. The seat-pan consisted of a pelvic support which supported the ischial tuberosities and areas behind them, and a thigh support which maintained the thighs at a 15 degrees downward angle, resulting in a 105 degrees trunk-thigh angle. The backrest consisted of a lumbar support which preserved lumbar lordosis and a thoracic support which supported the upper back during backward leaning. The traditional work seat was similar to an office chair (i e, a large horizontal seat-pan and a wide backrest) with the exception of having a higher than normal seat-height. This investigation consisted of three studies to compare the seats: (1) A user comfort and acceptance experiment which compared the initial psychophysical responses of 50 industrial sewers when introduced to the new seat; (2) a backrest usage experiment which compared the duration of backrest use among 10 industrial sewers; and (3) a follow-up experiment to evaluate chair preference after extended use of the new seat. The results of the user comfort and acceptance experiment found that the new work seat had greater comfort and user preference; the results of the backrest usage experiment found that the new seat had greater backrest use than the traditional seat; the results of the follow-up experiment found that the preference for the new seat was maintained over time and not due to a Hawthorne Effect.  相似文献
