This paper reports the work of selecting suitable manufacturing processes and materials in concurrent design for manufacturing environment. In the paper, a fuzzy knowledge-based decision support method is proposed for multi-criteria decision-making in evaluating and selecting possible manufacturing process/material combinations in terms of the total production cost. Based on the proposed method, a prototype Web-based knowledge-intensive manufacturing consulting service system (WebMCSS) with the client-knowledge server architecture is developed to help designers/users find good processes and materials while still at the conceptual level of design. The system, as one of the important parts of an advanced design for manufacturing tool, is a concept level process and material selection tool that can be used as both a standalone application and a Java applet freely available via the Web. Interlinked with Web pages of tutorials, and reference pages explaining the facets, fabrication processes and material choices, the system performs reasoning and calculations using the process capability and material property data from the remote Web-based database and knowledge base that can be maintained and updated via the Internet. The presence of a number of available non-traditional machining (NTM) processes has brought out the idea of selecting the most suitable NTM process for generating a desired shape feature on a given work material. This paper presents a digraph-based approach to ease out the appropriate NTM process selection problem. It includes the design and development of an expert system that can automate this decision-making process with the help of graphical user interface and visual aids. The proposed approach employs the use of pair-wise comparison matrices to calculate the relative importance of different attributes affecting the NTM process selection decision. Based on the characteristics and capabilities of the available NTM processes to machine the required shape feature on a given work material, the permanent values of the matrices related to those processes are computed. Finally, if some of the NTM processes satisfy a certain threshold value, those are shortlisted as the acceptable processes for the given shape feature and work material combination. The digraph-based expert system not only segregates the accepted NTM processes from the list of the available processes but also ranks them in decreasing order of preference. It also helps the user as a responsible guide to select the most suitable NTM process by incorporating all the possible error trapping mechanisms. This paper takes into account some new work materials, shape features and NTM processes that have not been considered by the earlier researchers. It is further observed that the developed expert system is quite flexible and versatile as the results of the cited examples totally corroborate with those obtained by the past researchers. 相似文献

Among the important strategies in sustainable product development is by maintaining product recovery and prolonging product life which are highly dependent on the ease of disassembly. When considering the design for disassembly, there are many fastener-associated factors to be considered such as structural, disassembly process and the pre-disassembly process. There are very few designs for disassembly methods that support the selection of fasteners for design for disassembly (DfD) concepts. Most of the tools developed are more applicable during later stages of the design process when more product information is available. The process of selecting a fastener for its functional characteristics itself is often vague. Additionally, the requirements for disassemblability further complicate the process. This paper proposes the development of a multi-criteria decision making model to assist designers in selecting fasteners for DfD. PROMETHEE was used to build a decision-making model to help the designers in selecting the fasteners that could perform their intended functions with ease of disassembly. Thoughtful consideration of products maintenance features early in design stage can reduce or eliminate maintenance costs, reduce downtime, and improve safety. As such, the effective collaboration of product designers and maintenance technicians throughout the product design process is becoming much more important for the most advanced competitiveness. To address this need, a visualization system that enables maintainability-related technicians cooperated with product designers in a networked manufacturing environment is proposed in this study. This paper presents a systematic approach to implementation of a Web-based visualization system by using virtual reality technology. The system aims at providing a simulated environment and concurrent engineering processes to facilitate communication, coordination, control, and integration of product maintainability validation and improvement activities. Many companies intend to utilize the robotic systems to improve the performance of their manufacturing systems. Since the robotic systems are complex, it is required to determine the most suitable robot arm at the beginning of the complete design process. However, due to the increase in the number of robot arm alternatives and existence of the multiple and conflicting criteria, it has become hard to the decision makers to select the appropriate robot arm for a production system. Although the traditional multiple criteria of decision-making techniques were heavily employed in the past for this problem, they were based on subjective judgments for both the alternatives and the criteria. Therefore, a methodology based on Axiomatic Design principles is proposed to help the decision maker decide the most appropriate robot arm on a scientific, systematic, and objective basis. Moreover, the proposed methodology is extended into a decision support system (DSS) through MATLAB software, to evaluate more alternatives rapidly. Both the proposed methodology and Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) were applied to solve a small problem, so that the techniques will be compared and the utility of the proposed approach will be revealed. Besides, the proposed DSS was applied to a real robot arm selection problem of a food manufacturing system to show its performance in evaluating several alternatives and choosing the most suitable one in an objective and quick manner. 相似文献

This paper deals with an automated computer-aided process planning and die design system by which the designer can determine
operation sequences even if they have little experience in process planning and die design for axisymmetric products. An attempt
is made to link programs incorporating a number of expert design rules with the process variables obtained by commercial FEM
softwares, DEFORM and ANSYS, to form a useful package. The system is composed of four main modules. The process planning and
the die design modules consider several factors, such as the complexities of preform geometry, punch and die profiles, specifications
of available multi-former, and the availability of standard parts. They can provide a flexible process based on either the
reduction in the number of forming sequences by combining the possible two processes in sequence, or the reduction of deviation
of the distribution on the level of the required forming loads by controlling the forming ratios. In the die design module
optimal design technique and the horizontal split of the die insert were investigated for determining appropriate dimensions
of components of the multi-former die set. It is suggested that the proposed method can be beneficial for improving the tool
