Document Analysis by Crosscount Approach

In this paper a new feature called crosscount for document analysis is introduced.The reature crosscount is a function of white line segment with its start on the edge of document images.It reflects not only the contour of image,but also the periodicity of white lines(background)and text lines in the document images.In complex printed-page layouts,there are different blocks such as textual,graphical,tabular,and so on.Of these blocks,textual ones have the most obvious periodicity with their homogeneous white lines arranged regularly.The important property of textual blocks can be extracted by crosscount functions.here the document layouts are classified into three classes on the basis of their physical structures.Then the definition and properties of the crosscount function are described.According to the classification of document layouts,the application of this new feature to different types of document images‘ analysis and understanding is discussed.     

Program Transformation by Solving Equations

Based on the theory of orthogonal program expansion^[8-10],the paper proposes a method to transform programs by solving program equations.By the method,transformation goals are expressed in program equations,and achieved by solving these equations.Although such equations are usually too complicated to be solved directly,the orthogonal expansion of programs makes it possible to reduce such equations into systems of equations only containing simple constructors of programs.Then,the solutions of such equations can be derived by a system of solving and simplifying rules,and algebraic laws of programs.The paper discusses the methods to simplify and solve equations and gives some examples.     

Prefix Code Translation by Mapping

This paper introduces a new way of prefix code translation.It helps to finish the whole translation by mapping once (only one comparison instruction is needed for getting the length of prefix code),and returns the original data and the length of prefix code element.The decoding time is only about four times as many as the time accessing original data directly.     

Discovering Natural Laws by Reduction

A polynomial algorithm.called Reduction,is presented to discover natural laws by analysing a set of experimental data.instead of a heuristic exploration which,when adopted in BACON,can only lead to rediscovering simple laws.A complex law with multiple variables involved can be discovered by reducing it to a search.This search is so efficient that it does not need any backtracking and is able to cover most of possible laws.A reduction-based discovery system,called DISCOVER 2.0,was developed with a flexible knowledge base and an ability of dealing with imperfect data.The system has been verified to be valid computationally,practically,and theoretically,by discovering a great number o complex laws,and can be also viewed as a leaming engine embodied in any intelligent systems to improve their performance by obtaining a general rule from the accumulated data.

Geometric Modelling by Recursively Cutting Vertices

In this paper,a new method for curve and surface modelling is introduced which generates curves and surfaces by recursively cutting and grinding polygons and polyhedra.It is a generalization of the existing corner-cutting methods.A lot of properties,such as geometric continuity,representation,shape-preserving,and the algorithm are studied which show that such curves and surfaces are suitable for geometric designs in CAD,computer graphics and their application fields.

Approximation by Stancu–Chlodowsky polynomials

In this paper, we investigate convergence and approximation properties of a Chlodowsky type generalization of Stancu polynomials (we called Stancu–Chlodowsky polynomials).The rates of convergence of this generalization are obtained by means of modulus of continuity and by using the $K$-functional of Peetre. We also present and prove theorems on weighted approximation and the order of approximation of continuous functions by these operators on all positive semi-axis.     

Robot Self—Location by Line Correspondences

This paper thoroughly investigates the problem of robot self-location by line correspondences.The original cotributions are three-fold:(1) Obtain the necessary and sufficient condition to determine linearly the robot‘s pose by two line correspondences.(2) Show that if the space lines are vertical ones,it is impossible to determine linearly the robot‘s pose no matter how many line correspondences we have,and the minimum number of line correspondences is 3 to determine uniquely (but non-linearly)the robot‘s pose.(3) Show that if the space lines are horizontal ones,the minimum number of line correspondences is 3 for linear determination and 2 for non-linear determination of the robot‘s pose.

Observability analysis by Poincaré normal forms

This paper deals with quadratic equivalence, normal forms of observability, characteristic matrices and normal quadratic numbers for nonlinear Single-Input Single-Output systems. We investigated both cases: nonlinear systems linearly observable and nonlinear systems with one linear unobservable mode. Particularly, the effect of the normal quadratic numbers on the observer design is pointed out. Finally, a faster observability analysis is proposed using characteristic matrices and normal quadratic numbers. Throughout the paper, academic examples as well as bio-reactor example highlight our purpose.
