In this study we examine a new computer model of light scattering. Light propagation through a columnar hexagonal liquid crystal has been represented by using a cylindrical model. Numerical aspects of the light scattering process, which are based on numerically solving Maxwell's equations, have been calculated for a liquid crystal. We describe in detail the circular cylindrical model for computing light scattering from a columnar hexagonal liquid crystal and present the results of benchmark computations. We report results of extensive calculation for oriented columnar molecular systems. Our results are compared with previous studies on light scattering by other materials.  相似文献

Diffusive media characterization with laser speckle   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Thompson CA  Webb KJ  Weiner AM 《Applied optics》1997,36(16):3726-3734
The statistical properties of laser speckle with partially coherent light are related to the scattering characteristics of an optically diffuse material. A diffusion equation model is shown to yield a speckle contrast ratio that agrees well with measurements of opaque plastics of varying thicknesses. We show that partially coherent light can be used to determine material parameters for highly scattering media. Measured data for stratified materials with differing scattering properties indicate that this technique may be useful in detecting inhomogeneities.  相似文献

We study the deviation from diffusion theory that occurs in the dynamic transport of light through thin scattering slabs. Solving numerically the time-dependent radiative transfer equation, we obtain the decay time and the effective diffusion coefficient Deff. We observe a nondiffusive behavior for systems whose thickness L is smaller than 8l(tr), where l(tr) is the transport mean free path. We introduce a simple model that yields the position of the transition between the diffusive and the nondiffusive regimes. The size dependence of Deff in the nondiffusive region is strongly affected by internal reflections. We show that the reduction of approximately 50% of Deff that was observed experimentally [Phys. Rev. Lett. 79, 4369 (1997)] can be reproduced by the radiative transfer approach. We demonstrate that the radiative transfer equation is an appropriate tool for studying dynamic light transport in thin scattering systems when coherent effects play no significant role.  相似文献

We simulated light scattering from a particle located on a smooth surface. We developed a new approach utilizing the discrete sources method based on a strict mathematical model for this scattering problem. The main features of the corresponding numerical algorithm are presented. The results of modeling and comparisons with other theoretical results and experimental data are shown as well.  相似文献

To show how apertures affect measurements of the circularly polarized components of light scattered to a detector, we develop two methods of averaging the V and I Stokes parameters over a circular aperture that collects light scattered from an optically active sphere. One method uses a two-dimensional numerical integration that is appropriate for small apertures, and the other gives analytical expressions for scattering into a solid angle of any size. We identify the aperture locations that, independent of aperture size, give an average V (and an effective degree of circular polarization) of zero for scattering from an optically inactive sphere and of nonzero for scattering from an optically active sphere.  相似文献

We develop a coherent-scattering model for the reflection of light from a monolayer of large particles and low surface coverage. The model takes into account multiple scattering between particles of the monolayer and with the substrate, and it can be used around the critical angle in an internal reflection configuration. We compare the results of the model with our own reflectivity data taken with latex particles adsorbed on a glass-water interface and with a simpler effective-medium model.  相似文献

Debye series for light scattering by a multilayered sphere   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3

We have derived the formula for the Debye-series decomposition for light scattering by a multilayered sphere. This formulism permits the mechanism of light scattering to be studied. An efficient algorithm is introduced that permits stable calculation for a large sphere with many layers. The formation of triple first-order rainbows by a three-layered sphere and single-order rainbows and the interference of different-order rainbows by a sphere with a gradient refractive index, are then studied by use of the Debye model and Mie calculation. The possibility of taking only one single mode or several modes for each layer is shown to be useful in the study of the scattering characteristics of a multilayered sphere and in the measurement of the sizes and refractive indices of particles.  相似文献

We have developed a new technique based on light scattering experiments for tracing an alien particle with deterministic potential in a random collection of particles. We have shown that, via a sequence of measurements of light scattered to a far field of a scattering collection, it is possible to locate the center of the alien particle. The analysis of the stability of reconstruction is provided, and it is demonstrated via simulations that the results are stable for sufficiently large wavelength of the incident light and in cases when the size of the alien particle is comparable with the size of the typical particle in the collection.  相似文献

We describe a simple method for performing accurate computer simulation and modeling of arbitrary-geometry electro-optic (EO) devices. We use a material EO model that includes the effects of scattering and depolarization as well as the change in the index of refraction. Finite-element analysis is used to determine the electrostatic field distribution for EO device designs. Attenuation of the transmitted light intensity as a result of scattering is modeled as an exponential function, and the intensity of transmitted depolarized light is shown to be a function of the scattering intensity. The total optical transmittance is determined by integration of these values over all the elements in the path of the propagating light. Lanthanum-modified lead zirconate titanate-based surface-electrode and transverse-electrode EO devices are designed and fabricated. Their experimentally measured performance is found to be in excellent agreement with our computer-simulation results.  相似文献

Temperature inhomogeneities in free, isotropic turbulence have the effect of scattering light in near-forward angles. We investigate numerically modifications of free turbulence by a rigid wall and its effect on the propagation of light through turbulence. The wall is a 5 cm optical window placed at the leading edge of an instrument towed with speeds of 0.1 and 1 m/s in free turbulence. The turbulent flow field presents inhomogeneities of an embedded passive scalar (Pr = 7, temperature in water), which are modified by the boundary layer developing on the window. We find that the developing laminar boundary layer has a negligible effect on light scattering for the investigated geometry when considered in terms of the volume-scattering function (differential cross section). This indicates that the boundary layer is not an obstacle for optical measurements of turbulence.  相似文献

There is a growing class of elementary particle detectors, large-water ?erenkov detectors, that have a body of water (thousands of tons) as a sensitive medium. Particles are detected when they interact with the water and produce ?erenkov light, so detection efficiency relies on the transparency of the water. These detectors are active typically for many years, so biological activity (primarily bacterial growth) is one of the means by which the transparency of the water may be reduced. We present the results of a measurement of light scattering and absorption from a population of Escherichia coli in water, which is used as a model for bacteria in general. One can separate the scattering and absorption by varying the refractive index of the medium by using a solute of high molecular weight. We show that the results can be understood simply in terms of light scattering from small spheres (radius ≈ wavelength) with an effective refractive index, n(b), plus a small amount of absorption in the ultraviolet. We compare his scattering with Rayleigh scattering in pure water.  相似文献

It is well established that diffusion approximation is valid for light propagation in highly scattering media, but it breaks down in nonscattering regions. The previous methods that manipulate nonscattering regions are essentially boundary-to-boundary coupling (BBC) methods through a nonscattering void region based on the radiosity theory. We present a boundary-to-interior coupling (BIC) method. BIC is based on the fact that the collimated pencil beam incident on the medium can be replaced by an isotropic point source positioned at one reduced scattering length inside the medium from an illuminated point. A similar replacement is possible for the nondiffuse lights that enter the diffuse medium through the void, and it is formulated as the BIC method. We implemented both coupling methods using the finite element method (FEM) and tested for the circle with a void gap and for a four-layer adult head model. For mean time of flight, the BIC shows better agreement with Monte Carlo (MC) simulation results than BBC. For intensity, BIC shows a comparable match with MC data compared with that of BBC. The effect of absorption of the clear layer in the adult head model was investigated. Both mean time and intensity decrease as absorption of the clear layer increases.  相似文献

Multiple light scattering in laser particle sizing   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Multiple light scattering is an important issue in modern laser diffraction spectrometry. Most laser particle sizers do not account for multiple light scattering in a disperse medium under investigation. This causes an underestimation of the particle sizes in the case of high concentrations of scatterers. The retrieval accuracy is improved if the measured data are processed with multiple-scattering algorithms that treat multiple light scattering in a disperse medium. We evaluate the influence of multiple light scattering on light transmitted by scattering layers. The relationships among different theories to account for multiple light scattering in laser particle sizing are considered.  相似文献

To gain a better understanding of the spatiotemporal problems that are encountered in two-photon excitation fluorescence imaging through highly scattering media, we investigate how diffraction affects the three-dimensional intensity distribution of a focused, pulsed optical beam propagating inside a scattering medium. In practice, the full potential of the two-photon excitation fluorescence imaging is unrealized at long scattering depths, owing to the unwanted temporal and spatial broadening of the femtosecond excitation light pulse that reduces the energy density at the geometric focus while it increases the excitation energy density in the out-of-focus regions. To analyze the excitation intensity distribution, we modify the Monte Carlo-based photon-transport model to a semi-quantum-mechanical representation that combines the wave properties of light with the particle behavior of the propagating photons. In our model the propagating photon is represented by a plane wave with its propagation direction in the scattering medium determined by the Monte Carlo technique. The intensity distribution in the focal region is given by the square of the linear superposition of the various plane waves that arrive at different incident angles and optical path lengths. In the absence of scattering, the propagation model yields the intensity distribution that is predicted by the Huygens-Fresnel principle. We quantify the decrease of the energy density delivered at the geometric focus as a function of the optical depth to the mean-free-path ratio that yields the average number of scattering events that a photon encounters as it propagates toward the focus. Both isotropic and anisotropic scattering media are considered. Three values for the numerical aperture (NA) of the focusing lens are considered: NA = 0.25, 0.5, 0.75.  相似文献

Analytic equations are developed for the single-scattering properties of a spherical particle embedded in an absorbing medium, which include absorption, scattering, extinction efficiencies, the scattering phase function, and the asymmetry factor. We derive absorption and scattering efficiencies by using the near field at the surface of the particle, which avoids difficulty in obtaining the extinction based on the optical theorem when the far field is used. Computational results demonstrate that an absorbing medium significantly affects the scattering of light by a sphere.  相似文献

Elastic light scattering by mature red blood cells (RBCs) was theoretically and experimentally analyzed by use of the discrete dipole approximation (DDA) and scanning flow cytometry (SFC), respectively. SFC permits measurement of the angular dependence of the light-scattering intensity (indicatrix) of single particles. A mature RBC is modeled as a biconcave disk in DDA simulations of light scattering. We have studied the effect of RBC orientation related to the direction of the light incident upon the indicatrix. Numerical calculations of indicatrices for several axis ratios and volumes of RBC have been carried out. Comparison of the simulated indicatrices and indicatrices measured by SFC showed good agreement, validating the biconcave disk model for a mature RBC. We simulated the light-scattering output signals from the SFC with the DDA for RBCs modeled as a disk-sphere and as an oblate spheroid. The biconcave disk, the disk-sphere, and the oblate spheroid models have been compared for two orientations, i.e., face-on and rim-on incidence, relative to the direction of the incident beam. Only the oblate spheroid model for rim-on incidence gives results similar to those of the rigorous biconcave disk model.  相似文献

We simulate and measure light scattering of a micrometer-sized spherical particle suspended in solution close to a glass substrate. The model, based on the discrete sources method, is developed to describe the experimental situation of total internal reflection microscopy experiments; i.e., the particle is illuminated by an evanescent light field originating from the glass-solvent interface. In contrast to the well-established assumption of a simple exponential decay of the scattering intensity with distance, we demonstrate significant deviations for a certain range of penetration depths and polarization states of the incident light.  相似文献

In the paper, we present a novel single particle method, named spatially resolved scattering correlation spectroscopy (SRSCS), based on a total internal reflection (TIR) configuration and strong resonance light scattering (RLS) of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The principle of SRSCS is similar to fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS), and it is based on measuring the RLS fluctuations in a small volume due to Brownian motion of single nanoparticles. We first established a highly sensitive SRSCS system. In the SRSCS system, a millimeter-scale hole is employed to efficiently separate nanoparticle scattering light from the background reflected beam, and an electron multiplying charge-coupled device (EMCCD) is used as an array detector. The SRSCS system was successfully used for detection and imaging of single AgNPs in solution. Furthermore, we developed the model of SRSCS according to the FCS method and systematically investigated the effects of certain factors such as particle concentration, viscosity of the solution, hardware and software binning and accumulation time on SRSCS measurements using AgNPs as a model sample. A series of calibration experiments were conducted, and the experimental data obtained were in good agreement with the SRSCS model. This new method is multiplexing, spatially resolved, and free of photobleaching and may become a useful method for study on heterogeneous systems, such as the motion of proteins on the cell membrane.  相似文献

We study the propagation of light through a medium containing isotropic scattering and absorption centers. With a Monte Carlo simulation serving as the benchmark solution to the radiative transfer problem of light propagating through a turbid slab, we compare the transmission and reflection density computed from the telegrapher's equation, the diffusion equation, and multiple-flux theories such as the Kubelka-Munk and four-flux theories. Results are presented for both normally incident light and diffusely incident light. We find that we can always obtain very good results from the telegrapher's equation provided that two parameters that appear in the solution are set appropriately. We also find an interesting connection between certain solutions of the telegrapher's equation and solutions of the Kubelka-Munk and four-flux theories with a small modification to how the phenomenological parameters in those theories are traditionally related to the optical scattering and absorption coefficients of the slab. Finally, we briefly explore how well the theories can be extended to the case of anisotropic scattering by multiplying the scattering coefficient by a simple correction factor.  相似文献

A novel method for detection of ballistic light and rejection of unwanted diffusive light to image structures inside highly scattering media is demonstrated. Degenerate four wave mixing (DFWM) of a doubled YAG laser in Rhodamine 6G is used to provide an ultrafast correlation time gate to discriminate against light that has undergone multiple scattering and therefore lost memory of the structures inside the scattering medium. We present preliminary results that determine the nature of the DFWM grating, confirm the coherence time of the laser, prove the phase-conjugate nature of the signal beam, and determine the dependence of the signal (reflectivity) on dye concentration and laser intensity. Finally, we have obtained images of a test cross-hair pattern through highly turbid suspensions of whole milk in water that are opaque to the naked eye. These imaging experiments demonstrate the utility of DFWM for imagingthrough turbid media. Based on our results, the use of DFWM as an ultrafast time gate for the detectionof ballistic light in optical mammography appears to hold great promise for improving the current state of the art.  相似文献
