Comprehensive watershed studies have been conducted for two lakes located in the Lake Michigan drainage system. Studies were conducted from March through October of 1979. During that interval, large differences in storm-related nutrient loading were measured from urban, wetland, and agricultural sources. Eliminating runoff due to melt of the snow pack, it was found that rain-related discharge from the urban area studied was 0.578 kg total-P and 3.688 kg total-N ha−1 of watershed. Rain induced runoff from marshes in the same drainage basin transported 0.023 kg total-P and 0.585 kg total-N ha−1 of catchment. Rainfall of approximately the same amount caused runoff from agricultural land of 0.180 kg total-P and 5.965 kg total-N ha−1. Algae of both lakes were phosphorus limited; nitrogen was present in excess. Using constants from Nichols-Dillon relationships in the literature regarding phosphorus, phytoplankton biomass, and secchi disc transparencies, the urban input of phosphorus ha−1 of drainage was sufficient to bring 0.96 ha-m of lake water to undesirable algal bloom status. Similarly, march input ha−1 would bring an estimated 0.04 ha-m into bloom. By the same calculation, storm-related agricultural runoff would result in 0.30 ha-m of lake water becoming undesirably rich in algae. Knowing the number of hectares in these types of catchment and the volume available in a particular lake for phytoplankton production, decisions regarding cost-effective treatment of rain-related discharge can be made.  相似文献

Experiments were carried out to investigate the feasibility of septic tank sludge (septage) disposal into pilot-scale waste recycling ponds for the production of algae and fish. A septage loading of 100 kg COD ha−1 day−1 to four 4-m2 single-stage ponds resulted in the production of algal biomass and dissolved oxygen in the pond water, suitable for Tilapia growth. Some microbiological investigations of this waste recycling scheme were undertaken using ten earth ponds (each with the dimensions of 20 × 10 × 1.3 m: length × width × depth). It was found that the densities of coliform bacteria and bacteriophages in the pond water and sediment tended to increase with increased septage loadings and loading periods. The ponds fed with septage at the loading of 100 kg COD ha−1 day−1 were found to contain higher densities of these microorganisms than those of the control pond without septage feeding. The possible public health impact resulting from this practice was assessed.  相似文献

The occurrence of animal viruses in the aerosol emissions of wastewater treatment facilities was evaluated by direct assay and by the use of coliforms and coliphages as indicator organisms. Coliforms and coliphages were compared and evaluated with regard to their suitability as indicators of airborne animal viral contamination from wastewater treatment facilities. Two plants, one with treatment by activated sludge and the other by trickling filtration, were studied. Field air sampling procedures used large-volume air samplers, with recirculation devices, and Andersen samplers. Airborne viruses were enumerated by a most probable number (MPN) procedure. Partially treated liquid sewage contained about 1.0 × 102 pfu l−1 of animal viruses assayed on Buffalo Green Monkey (BGM) cells, 3.6 × 105 and 5.0 × 105 pfu l−1 of coliphages, depending upon the E. coli host strain used for assay, and 2.0 × 109 colonies l−1 of coliform bacteria. No airborne animal viruses were recovered, airborne coliphage levels averaged 2.3 × 10−1 and 3.0 × 10−1 MPN m−3, coliforms from aerosol emissions were 2.1 × 102 colonies m−3. Ratios of coliphages to animal viruses indicate that wastewater treatment plants may be continuous sources of low level concentrations of animal virus aerosols. Evidence shows coliforms to be much less stable than coliphages in the airborne state. Coliphages may be a more acceptable indicator of airborne animal viral contamination than coliforms.  相似文献

Preliminary studies were carried out on the leaching of copper, zinc, chromium, cadmium and lead from eight kitchen faucets by samples of raw, filtered and distributed Ottawa water, a sample of well water and deionized water containing 2 mg l−1 aqueous fulvic acid. Leaching was effected by allowing the test solutions to stand in the inverted faucets for two successive 24-h periods. Concentrations of the metals found in the leachates were copper: first leaching, 0.12–28.0 mg l−1, second leaching, 0.08-3.54 mg l−1; zinc: first leaching, 0.13-10.25 mg l−1, second leaching, 0.06-2.85 mg l−1; chromium: first leaching, < 1.0 × 10−3 − 0.395 mg l−1, second leaching, < 1.0 × 10−3−0.032 mg l−1; cadmium: first leaching, < 0.05 × 10−3−0.01 mg l−1, second leaching, < 0.05 × 10−3−4 × 10−3 mg l−1; and lead: first leaching, < 0.2−110.0 mg l−1, second leaching, < 0.2−82.0 mg l−1. The faucets containing lead-soldered copper joints released high concentrations of lead, particularly in the case of leaching with the aqueous fulvic acid solution. Under the conditions of the present investigations it is indicated that in some cases the concentrations of metals leached could lead to intakes in excess of the maximum permissible limits for these metals. However, further investigations will be required to determine the possible contribution of these faucets to metal intake under normal usage.  相似文献

Raw effluents from meatworks were found to have high levels of bacterial contamination, comparable to those found in domestic sewage. Counts of 4 × 107 ml−1 for total aerobes and 107 ml−1 for total coliforms were obtained. Four effluent treatment processes were examined for effectiveness of removal of bacteria, chemical oxygen demand (COD) and suspended solids (SS). Lagoon and activated sludge systems were the most efficient, followed by physico-chemical treatment and lastly by high-rate trickling filtration. Both the lagoon and activated sludge systems achieved large reductions in total coliform counts, usually by factors of between 103 and 104. The effluents from both these systems nearly met normal discharge requirements for COD and SS, but the bacteriological quality was still poor.  相似文献

Results on the influence of land use and climatic changes on nutrient losses in the Porijõgi river catchment, south Estonia, are presented. The main tendency in land use changes is a significant increase in abandoned lands (from 1.7% in 1987 to 12.5% in 1994), and a decrease in arable lands (from 41.8 to 22.5%). Significant climatic fluctuations were observed from 1951–1994. Warmer winters (increase from −7.9 to −5.8°C from 1950–1994) and a change in the precipitation pattern have influenced the mean annual water discharge. This results in more intensive material flow during colder seasons and decreased water runoff in summer. Changes in water discharge and land use are also reflected in the mean annual runoff of total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) and total-P which decreased from 15.6 to 2.7 kg N ha−1 yr−1 (83%) and 0.32 to 0.21 kg P ha−1 yr−1 (34%), respectively during this period. However, nutrient losses from the forest subcatchment (upper course) did not change significantly. In contrast, the mean annual runoff of water, organic matter (after biological oxygen demand: BOD5), TIN, total-P and SO4 from cultivated subcatchments showed a significant decrease.  相似文献

Hg, Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn, Fe and Mn concentrations were measured in Chironomidae larvae, Crustacea plankton, as well as in various organs of mussels and fishes collected from the open water area of Lake Balaton. The values were comparatively low. However, there were significant differences in the metal concentrations of species and tissue.Most Cd was found in the gill of Unio pictorum L., most Pb, Zn and Mn in the gill of Anodonta cygnea L., most Cu in Crustacea plankton and in the liver of Abramis brama L., and most Hg and Fe in Chironomidae larvae. Low concentrations occurred in fishes, the lowest in the flesh of Stizostedion lucioperca L.Accumulation of metals in organs as compared with their concentration in the lake water was in the range of 3.4 × 102−2.6 × 103 for Hg; 7.0 × 102−6.8 × 103 for Cd; 3.3 × 102−9.7 × 103 for Cu; 6.9 × 102−8.1 × 103 for Zn; 1.5 × 103−2.4 × 104 for Pb; 3.5 × 102−3.1 × 104 for Fe; and 5.0 × 101−3.5 × 105 for Mn.  相似文献

Patterns of storm runoff chemistry from a wollastonite (calcium-silicate mineral, CaSiO3) treated watershed (W1) were compared with a reference watershed (W6) at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest (HBEF) in New Hampshire (NH), USA to investigate the role of Ca2+ supply in the acid–base status of stream chemistry. In the summer of 2003, six storm events were studied in W1 and W6 to evaluate the effects of the wollastonite treatment on the episodic acidification of stream waters. Although mean values of Ca2+ concentrations decreased slightly from 33.8 to 31.7 μmol/L with increasing stream discharge in W1 during the events, the mean value of acid neutralizing capacity (ANC) was positive (1.2 μeq/L) during storm events, compared to negative values (− 0.2 μeq/L) in W6. This pattern is presumably due to enhanced Ca2+ supply in W1 (20.7 to 29.0% of dissolved Ca2+ derived from the added wollastonite) to stream water as a result of interflow along shallow flowpaths. In addition, the application of wollastonite increased pH and dissolved silica (H4SiO4) concentrations, and decreased the concentration of inorganic monomeric Al (Ali) in W1 in comparison with W6 during storm events. Despite an increase in SO42− concentration, likely due to desorption of sulfate from soil after the treatment, the watershed showed an increase in ANC compared to the reference watershed, serving to mitigate episodic acidification.  相似文献

The export and concentration of inorganic nitrogen and total phosphorus from 34 watersheds in a northwestern Iowa lake district were measured during March 1971–August 1973. Annual nutrient losses were approximately 0.35 kg ha−1 P. 6.7 kg ha−1 NO3-N, and 1.0 kg ha−1 NH3-N. A statistical analysis of the relationship between land-use and plant nutrients was used to determine differences among streams. Animal units in feedlots were significantly correlated with phosphorus and ammonia nitrogen (mg l−1 and kg ha−1 yr−1). Nitrate nitrogen was negatively correlated with the percentage of watershed in marshland. Tile drainage and surface runoff from grasslands, feedlots, cornfields, and soybean fields were analyzed for nitrogen and phosphorus in spring 1974: mean values are given.  相似文献

The occurrence of bromide in precipitation, surface and ground waters in Sweden has been investigated (300 samples). The concentration of bromide in precipitation is 0.05–0.15 μM in the south and <0.05 μM in the north of Sweden. The concentrations of bromide and chloride are well correlated. For river water the same areal distribution pattern as for precipitation is found, but the concentrations are 2–4 times higher. The molar ratio Br/Cl is 1 × 10−3 which is lower than that for sea water (1.54 × 10−3) and, most likely, also lower than for precipitation. A detailed study of Lake Mälaren has been made. The north-eastern feeder streams, passing an area of post-glacial clay, showed unusually high bromide concentrations (0.3–3 μM) and Br/Cl quotients (2 × 10−3-8 × 10−3). No correlation between the concentrations of bromide and chloride was found. Rough calculations indicate that fertilizers and chemicals added to the fields could only contribute a minor fraction of the bromide found. Analysis of 18 ground water samples indicated increased bromide levels as compared to surface waters.  相似文献

Cadmium contents in the water and the sediment samples collected from the Tama River and several branches were measured. Cadmium (above 0.005mgl−1) was detected in only four of the water samples, while the sediment samples showed cadmium content of 1.0–9.8 μg g−1 dry sediment. Cadmium concentration in the sediments of the main stream was correlated against ignition loss of the samples and it was found that 1 g of ignition loss (organic matter) corresponded to 35 μg of cadmium.The batch adsorption experiment in the laboratory using an aqueous solution of cadmium for 14 sediment samples with a higher concentration of cadmium indicated that the amount adsorbed by the sediment is highly dependent on the ignition loss. The amount adsorbed on unit mass of ignition loss qIL could be correlated by a Freundlich-type equilibrium relation as where C is the equilibrium concentration in the aqueous phase ranging between 7 × 10−3 and 10 mg l−1, while kIL and n are equilibrium constants.The adsorption rate measurement showed that the intraparticle diffusion coefficient of cadmium in the sediment was about 1.1 × 10−6 cm2s−1, which is of a reasonable order of magnitude assuming the pore diffusion mechanism inside the particle.The results suggest that suspended solid particles of high organic content in flowing water contribute significantly to the transport of cadmium along the river.  相似文献

A distributed hydrological model, YHyM, was integrated with the export coefficient concept and applied to simulate the nutrient load in the Mekong River Basin. In the validation period (1992–1999), Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency was 76.4% for discharge, 65.9% for total nitrogen, and 45.3% for total phosphorus at Khong Chiam. Using the model, scenario analysis was then performed for the 2020s taking into account major anthropogenic factors: climate change, population, land cover, fertilizer use, and industrial waste water. The results show that the load at Kompong Cham in 2020s is 6.3 × 104 tN a− 1 (+ 13.0% compared to 1990s) and 4.3 × 103 tP a− 1 (+ 24.7%). Overall, the noticeable nutrient sources are cropland in the middle region and urban load in the lower region. The installation of waste water treatment plants in urban areas possibly cut 60.6%N and 19.9%P of the estimated increase in the case without any treatment.  相似文献

Microbiological effects of non-disinfected, combined chemical and domestic wastewater effluent discharge into coastal waters north of Barceloneta. Puerto Rico were investigated by membrane filter enumeration of fecal indicator bacteria and by enrichment isolation of specific pathogens. A wastewater plume was detected and delineated around the sewage outfall, located 800 m offshore and 30 m below the ocean surface. Fecal coliform and fecal streptococcus counts within the plume were significantly (F test) larger than comparable counts outside the plume. The shape and location of the plume was compatible with current patterns and prevailing winds and extended as far as 3.7 km west of the outfall, at which point the fecal coliform count was 146 100 ml−1. The average non-plume fecal coliform concentration was 6.7 100 ml−1. Specific pathogens isolated included Salmonella and Vibrio spp, including V. cholerae non-01 serovar isolated from a nearby river also impacted by the sewage plant.  相似文献

The protection afforded the water consumer by the maintenance of a free or combined chlorine residual in water distribution systems was evaluated in a laboratory system provided with a simulated cross connection. Tap water, adjusted to the appropriate pH, temperature and chlorine residual, was challenged with varying levels of autoclaved sewage seeded with Shigella sonnei, Salmonella typhimurium, a coliform (IMVIC++−−), poliovirus 1 and f2 bacterial virus. Comparative survivals of these microorganisms were evaluated over 2 h periods. As expected, microbial inactivation was increased by lower pH, higher temperature, higher initial chlorine concentration and lower sewage concentration. An initial free chlorine residual was more effective than an equivalent initial combined chlorine residual. Generally, S. sonnei, S. typhimurium and the coliform organism were inactivated at the same rate but poliovirus 1 was more resistant and f2 was the most resistant. At pH 8, with an initial free chlorine residual of 0.7 mg 1−1, and added sewage levels of up to 1% by vol, 3 logs or greater bacterial inactivation was obtained within 60 min. Viral inactivation under these conditions was less than 2 logs.  相似文献

The rate of adsorption of Astrazone Blue, a basic dye, on Sorbsil Silica has been studied. The parameters studied include particle size, initial dye concentration, agitation and dye solution temperature. The rate controlling step is mainly intraparticle diffusion, although a small boundary layer resistance is experienced. The activation energy for the adsorption of Astrazone Blue on silica is 13.2 ± 0.6 kJ kg−1. The diffusion coefficients vary from 9 × 10−9 cm2 s−1 at 20°C to 10 × 10−8 cm2 s−1 at 82°C.  相似文献

The algae of the R. Wye and its tributary the R. Lugg were described principally from samples collected from 7 sites in the lower Wye catchment during 1980 and 1981. The density of algae in the Wye was found to be correlated with river flow and solar radiation, highest numbers (12.5 × 105 cells ml−1), principally of Scenedesmus and Cyclotella, occurring at low stable flows and relatively high solar radiation. Algal populations in the Lugg were much smaller ( 1.3 × 103cells ml−1) than those of the Wye and were principally composed of species derived from the periphyton. Downstream increases in load (cell density × flow) of both Scenedesmus and Cyclotella in the Wye were generally equivalent to about 0.3 division d−1; these rates were lower than those obtained in laboratory culture and this was probably largely related to underestimates arising from algal removal by filter feeders (principally simuliid larvae). Potential problems arising from the treatment of Wye water supporting substantial algal growths are considered: these include haloform production, deoxygenation in a transfer pipeline, algal penetration into potable supply and taste and odour.  相似文献

The inactivation effects of lime, when applied to faeces on faecal coliform bacteria and Ascaris lumbricoides ova, were investigated in the laboratory. A faecal coliform inactivation of about 5 orders of magnitude could be achieved at 19 g CaO l−1 (or initial sample pH of 12) and contact times over a 3 h period, while negligible reduction of faecal coliform bacteria was obtained at 5.7 g CaO l−1 (or initial sample pH of 9) with contact times from 3 to 48 h. However, only a 26.5% reduction of Ascaris ova was observed with 19 g CaO l−1 and a contact time of 48 h. Microscopic examination of the treated samples suggested the ovicidal effects of lime upon the Ascaris ova was of a low efficiency.  相似文献

A hypolimnetic aeration system was recently installed in a small (16 ha Sα) eutrophic lake and a comparison made between measured performance and predicted performance from an empirical sizing method. The design variables used to size the system were: hypolimnetic volume 451,600 m3; maximum hypolimnetic oxygen consumption 0.2 mg l−1 d−1; aerator input rate 2 mg l−1; water velocity 0.76 m s−1 and depth of air release 12.2 m. A 3.7 kW compressor (0.57 m3 min−1) generated a water velocity of 0.46 m s−1, a water flow of 17.7 m3 min−1 and a theoretical hypolimnetic circulation period of 18 days. Dissolved oxygen increased by an average of 1.6 mg l−1 on each cycle through the aerator, and aerator input rates ranged from 0.6 to 2.6 mg l−1. Hypolimnetic oxygen consumption averaged 0.12 mg l−1 d−1 and ranged between 0.02 and 0.21 mg l−1 d−1. The aeration system was unable to meet the daily oxygen demand (90 kg) as the water velocity was slower than expected (0.46 m s−1). To avoid undersizing future aeration installations the following recommendations should be considered when using the empirical sizing formula: (1) estimates of oxygen consumption should be annual maximums from aerobic hypolimnia; (2) aerator input rates should be conservative (e.g. 1–4 mg l−1) and increase with depth; (3) water velocity of 0.45–0.50 m s−1 should initially be used when no information on actual bubble size or velocity is available; (4) aeration start-up should be timed to avoid periods of accumulated oxygen demands.  相似文献

The concentration of aqueous ozone can best be determined by the decolorization of indigo trisulfonate (600 nm, pH below 4) whenever the ozone cannot be measured directly by its u.v. absorption. The method is stoichiometric and extremely fast. The change of absorbance vs ozone added is −2.0 ± 0.1 × 104 M−1 cm−1 and is independent of the concentration of aqueous ozone in the range 0.005–30 mg 1−1. The precision of the analysis is 2% or 3 μg 1−1 for low concentrations if a spectrophotometer or a good filter instrument is used. Visual methods can be used to measure 0.01 mgl−1 ozone. Secondary oxidants produced by ozone in natural water, including hydrogen peroxide or chlorite, do not interfere; chlorine can be masked. The reagent solution is stable for 3 months. The method is recommended for kinetic measurements, for studies of ozonation processes and for visual field methods.  相似文献

The concentration of free copper in activated sludge with copper added is strongly influenced by pH. For example, at pH 6.5 with 9.13 × 10−5 mol Cu l−1, the free copper concentration is 4.0 × 10−7 mol l−1 (pCu = 6.4) and at pH 8.4 this concentration is 10−8 mol l−1 (pCu = 8.0). In both cases the activated sludge concentration is 0.7 g MLSS l−1. The free copper concentration is also affected by the concentration of mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS).In batch experiments with constant pH, the effect of copper on the nitrification rate was not regulated by total copper concentration but by copper/sludge ratio or by free copper concentrations. Experiments at different pH showed a linear correlation between nitrification capacity and free copper concentration, suggesting that the pH effect on nitrification below 8.3 is in fact a copper effect.Activated sludge with copper did not become acclimatized to the copper in a period of three days. Addition of nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) within one day did cancel the copper inhibition.The results were compared with the effect of copper on acetate removal by heterotrophic micro-organisms. The nitrifiers proved to be no more susceptible to copper than heterotrophic micro-organisms.  相似文献
